Deadline confirmed the cancellation on Friday, August 25, the news coming nearly five months after the 10-episode second season started streaming on Disney+. As Disney Plus continues down the road of rebooting and reviving as many nostalgic properties as possible — a road well-traveled and highly polished thanks to savvy spins like “The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers” and “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series” — it’s hard to begrudge the strategy when it produces something as sweet as “Doogie Kamealoha, M.D.” More than 30 years after “Doogie Howser, M.D.” first premiered on ABC, starring a teenaged Neil Patrick Harris as the iconic child doctor, Disney Plus has debuted its own thoroughly wholesome version with a Doogie as sunny as Harris’ was self-serious.
In Kourtney Kang’s update, Lahela “Doogie” Kamealoha (the very charming Peyton Elizabeth Lee) is a 16 year-old Hawaiian girl who loves the beach, her family, and a cute surfer (Alex Aiono) who doesn’t make her feel too weird about being a doctor prodigy. ‘Doogie Kameāloha, M.D.’ Boss on Bringing ‘Doogie Howser’ and TikTok — But Not Covid — Into Her Show
When Kourtney Kang was first thinking about how she could reimagine “Doogie Howser, M.D.,” she didn’t rule out any possibility. One idea was to have the original Doogie (Neil Patrick Harris) be the head of the hospital now, and the new show would center around his teenage daughter. In the end, Kang decided on a reboot, rather than a continuation series, but she stuck with the idea of having the new Doogie deal with a parent for a boss.
In “Doogie Kameāloha, M.D.,” which launches Sept. 8 on Disney Plus, the titular 16-year-old doctor’s real name is Lahela (played by Peyton Elizabeth Lee), and she works at a Hawaiian hospital under her mother, Dr. Clara Hannon (Kathleen Rose Perkins).
“It’s already hard for a mother to keep a 16-year-old daughter close to her and also having to navigate a working relationship felt interesting to us,” Kang tells Variety.

Peyton Elizabeth Lee’s Lahela Kamealoha reminds everyone of Doogie Howser, Neil Patrick Harris’ wunderkind (and very much fictional) teen doctor in the first trailer for Disney+’s remake of that very same fictional TV show.
That’s because, like Doogie, Lee’s Dr. Kamealoha is a “real life” version of Doogie Howser, herself being a teen prodigy doctor. Even though the show, like “Doogie Howser,” is also very much a work of fiction. In the world of “Doogie Kamealoha,” the show “Doogie Howser” very much existed, which would mean that Harris exists as an actor (and yes the show’s producers are trying to get him to make an appearance if it gets renewed).
Watch the trailer in the player above. “Doogie Kamealoha” premieres on Sept. 8.
Set in modern-day Hawaii, the 10-episode reboot follows Lahela “Doogie” Kameāloha (Lee), a mixed-race 16-year-old girl, juggling a budding medical career and life as a teenager.

Fans of ’80s TV who were hoping to see “Doogie Howser, M.D.” star Neil Patrick Harris make an appearance on Disney+’s upcoming reboot of the show will have to make peace with the fact the producers couldn’t get the former child star onto the first season of “Doogie Kamealoha, M.D.”
However, the Nph exclusion from the Hawaii-set reboot, which stars Peyton Elizabeth Lee in the title role of the unbelievably young doctor, is purely due to the pandemic, according to series creator Kourtney Kang.

“The Society” will not return for a second season as planned at Netflix, while the streamer is also not moving forward with a second season of “I Am Not Okay With This,” Variety has confirmed.
“I Am Not Okay With This” had been renewed after its first season aired back in February, but its renewal had not been announced. “The Society” had been picked up for a second season last July. The team behind “I Am Not Okay With This” had already begun work on writing a second season.
According to an individual with knowledge of the decisions, both shows were well liked internally at Netflix in addition to the critical acclaim they received upon release, but the plug was pulled on both due to the uncertainty around when they could begin production due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The pandemic also leading to added budget increases for health and safety reasons.

Leave it to a show about emergent supernatural abilities to be a perfect case study in calibration. “I Am Not Okay With This,” the latest Netflix adaptation of a Charles Forsman graphic novel, finds its protagonist Syd Novak (Sophia Lillis) beset by an unexpected, increasingly inconvenient bout of telekinesis. Rather than use this template for a story that escalates to city-toppling mayhem by the end of its opening season, these seven episodes track the evolution of Syd as a person rather than merely extrapolate the things she can’t control.
Even though Syd is introduced covered in blood, wandering dazed down the middle of the street, “I Am Not Okay With This” finds an effective build-in charting the course to get to that point. After an opening episode that threatens to buckle under some of the oppressive nihilism that often plagues “The End of the F***ing World” (also based on...
