CBS is nearing the end of a television season, so you know what that means: it's time to cancel "S.W.A.T."!
The network that's home to the hugely successful, many-tentacled "NCIS" franchise has never been able to get Aaron Rahsaan Thomas and Shawn Ryan's reboot of the 1975 ABC television series to hit the procedural sweet spot with mainstream audiences who love this genre no matter how formulaic it gets. "S.W.A.T." stabilized ratings-wise when CBS moved it to Fridays for good during season 6, but that's when the network started observing its yearly tradition of canceling the show.
"S.W.A.T." has its fans, many of whom tune in just to see Shemar Moore as Daniel "Hondo" Harrelson Jr., who, as a police officer of color, has fought to maintain a relatively harmonious relationship with the Los Angeles community he's tasked with protecting. Critics have never embraced "S.W.A.T." the way they did Ryan's "The Shield...

Few shows have stood the test of time as well as S.W.A.T., and although the gripping police procedural has only been on the air for eight years, it has already produced eight seasons. The show was created for television by Shawn Ryan and Aaron Rahsaan Thomas, and it’s based on the original S.W.A.T. series from Robert Hammer and Rick Husky. The series has seen plenty of stars come and go over the years, but one actor who just recently joined the cast is Annie Ilonzeh, who portrays Devin Gamble. Collider’s Michael Zimmerman recently caught up with Ilonzeh to talk about Season 8 of the show, and she spoke about how Devin is constantly being pulled between her work and her family, caught in the middle of her duty to catch the bad guys who also happen to be her family:...

Days of Our Lives star Stacy Haiduk (Kristen Dimera) traded her soap opera props for a splash of primetime fun, popping into a recent episode of “Swat”. The soap star also appeared previously in the CBS soap “The Young And The Restless”; might she be leaving the soap opera world for primetime?
Days Of Our Lives Spoilers – A Different Kind Of Role
Stacy has played crazy villains in her previous soap opera roles, so playing the role of a character named Thomas’ (Matt Anspach) mother may seem tame. This was a guest role, so she hasn’t been added to the regular cast, but it certainly is a change.
While the actress known for soap opera, having also played in the defunct ABC soap “All My Children” has appeared on TV movies in the past, she’s only guested on primetime shows.

CBS has announced a release date for the return of their police procedural S.W.A.T., just months after it was saved from cancelation. The crime drama will make its fall premiere on Friday, October 18 at 8:00 p.m. Est. The series will lead off the network's block of police/public service-themed shows on Fridays, and will be followed by the third season of Fire Country at 9:00 p.m. and the 14th and final season of Blue Bloods at 10:00 p.m.
The series has now been saved from cancelation twice. Last May, CBS announced that the series was done after six seasons, but criticism of the cancelation by star Shemar Moore, as well as the outcry from fans, caused CBS to reverse the decision a few days later. Season seven was promoted by the network as the series' final season, but once again, fan outcry caused the network to un-cancel the series in April.

S.W.A.T. season 8 has been set to premiere on CBS on Friday, October 18. The season will premiere at 8:00 p.m., followed by new episodes of Fire Country and Blue Bloods. It remains to be seen if the show, which has been nearly cancelled twice, will return for season 9.

The CBS show, which was developed by Aaron Rahsaan Thomas and Shawn Ryan, is based on the ABC program of the same name that ran from 1975 to 1976 and was later adapted into the 2003 movie of the same name starring Colin Farrell. It stars Shemar Moore as Sergeant Daniel "Hondo" Harrelson, the leader of an LAPD Special Weapons and Tactics unit. Per Deadline, the official release date for S.W.A.T. season 8 has now been set by CBS.

Police procedurals have been on television for decades and delight fans with dramatic storylines. Many police shows take on modern-day social issues, which helps make them more realistic for viewers who are seeing the same topics in the news. Even police shows of the past used hot-button topics to propel their storylines, even though the issues were different.
Police procedurals often break fans' hearts with characters being killed off or leaving the shows in a fashion that makes fans want to stop watching the show but can't because they are invested in the characters. Much to the delight of fans, the best police shows often run for multiple seasons before they are pulled from the air.
Updated by Robert Vaux and Fawzia Khan on December 29, 2023: High-stakes chases, character subplots and sharp detective work are the markers of the best cop shows, and viewers love the rush of adrenaline they get from this genre.

CBS’ drama Swat will live for one more season after the network reversed course on canceling the series.
Three days after announcing Swat would end with its sixth season, which wraps on May 19, the network on Monday picked up a final season. The series, a co-production between Sony Pictures TV and CBS Studios, will now get a seventh and final season on CBS. It will run for 13 episodes.

The show followed the exploits of Sergeant Daniel "Hondo" Harrelson and his highly trained Swat team as they tackled high-risk missions in Los Angeles. Last week, more than 400 TV creators and showrunners — all of them women — sent letters to top executives at Hollywood studios demanding that specific safety protocols be put in place for pregnant employees in states where abortion has been outlawed, or soon will be. Now, letters of support signed by 594 men — including J.J. Abrams, Jordan Peele, Greg Berlanti, Donald Glover, Aaron Sorkin, David E. Kelley, Taika Waititi and Ryan Murphy — have been sent to the same companies.
The text of the letter is short, simply saying the undersigned stand with their “female, trans & non-binary showrunner colleagues in demanding a response from our employers regarding the imminent crisis” at hand. It was delivered by replying-all to the first letter, and was sent to Disney, Netflix, Warner Bros. Discovery, Paramount, Apple, NBC Universal, Amazon, Lionsgate and AMC.
These activist correspondences have been instigated by the Supreme Court’s June 24 Dobbs decison, which overturned Roe v.

The guild’s Showrunner Initiative Committee said in a message to the guild’s members, “As a writer community, we can help create a new culture, one in which abuse and discrimination cannot thrive.”
The pledge states: “As union members, mistreatment of one of us is a problem for all of us. For the last four years, there has been an evolving conversation about addressing sexism, racism, discrimination, and bullying in our industry. As showrunners, we believe this behavior should not be tolerated. And while the...

Progress continues to be incremental in front of and behind television cameras in Hollywood. An October 2021 UCLA Television Diversity study examined 461 scripted television shows airing or streaming during the 2019-20 season. It revealed that only 32.1 percent of scripted broadcast network shows, 28.1 percent on cable TV, and 26.8 percent on streaming platforms, featured majority non-white casts. Each category saw an increase of roughly 2-3 percent over the previous season. In summary, despite popular claims of a “renaissance” for Bipoc creatives in Hollywood (especially for African Americans), there’s still much work to be done on the matter of inclusion in all job areas.
As their study states, the Bipoc group is not proportionately represented to their share of the U.S. population, even though audience interest in programming with talent that represents the nation’s diversity, continues to increase.
When Bipoc narratives are controlled by non-bipoc creatives, character story lines may lack authenticity,...

Lena Waithe’s Hillman Grad Productions — the company the actor/writer/producer founded with Rishi Rajani — now has an exclusive, multi-year deal with Warner Bros. Television Group. At Wbtvg, Waithe and Rajani will develop television projects for, according to the announcement, “all platforms, including WarnerMedia’s HBO Max, external streaming services, cable and the five broadcast networks.”
Hillman Grad’s previous deal was with Amazon Studios, but moved to Wbtvg after a “highly competitive situation.” The terms were not disclosed.
Waithe’s first project in the new pact will be to develop “Hoop Dreams” as a scripted drama, with Aaron Rahsaan Thomas (“S.W.A.T.”) set to executive produce and write.
Yes, director Steve James’ 1994 movie “Hoop Dreams” — the documentary that changed documentaries — is getting a scripted adaptation more than 27 years after it won the Sundance Film Festival’s audience award for best documentary. Waithe and Rajani will executive produce, as will Colin Callender,...

Lena Waithe has signed a big exclusive overall deal with Warner Bros. Television Group. The studio landed the producer, actor and Emmy-winning writer and her Hillman Grad Productions in a very competitive situation.
Under the multi-year pact, Waithe and partner Rishi Rajani will produce new television programming through Hillman Grad for all platforms, including WarnerMedia’s HBO Max, external streaming services, cable, and the five broadcast networks.
In her first project under the deal, Waithe is developing a scripted drama inspired by the landmark documentary film Hoop Dreams, which was directed by Steve James, and produced by James, Peter Gilbert, and Frederick Marx.
Written by Aaron Rahsaan Thomas, the coming-of-age drama would be following two African American teenage boys in 1990s Chicago experiencing the privileges and pitfalls of being high school basketball phenoms at the height of the Jordan era, and the start of high school players turning pro.
