Even though UFC 5 has now been out for over a year, I'm still playing the game and having fun with it. As one of the only good recent combat sports games that has come out, it's managed to scratch the combat-sports gaming itch that I have as both a boxing and Mma fan. With the demise of the Fight Night franchise and seemingly no other development team willing to enter the arena, right now, in terms of the genre, all I have is UFC 5.
And while I've explored nearly everything the game has to offer, from trying to muster enough stats for my pitiful online career to betting on every upcoming UFC event, I've, for the most part, stayed away from the tournament mode. I don't tend to play Xbox games with friends, so typically, I stick to the weekly challenges, career, and ranked online modes — but tournament mode was calling my name,...

Exclusive: As production on his new actioner Den of Thieves 2: Pantera continues, Christian Gudegast has been set to write and direct a new film on mixed martial artist Royce Gracie and the birth of the Ultimate Fighting Championship for frequent partner Tucker Tooley Entertainment.
The Untitled Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Project takes place on the night that Gracie proved Brazilian Jiu-jitsu as the most effective fighting style, one that would ultimately become a major component of today’s UFC mixed martial arts. It more specifically chronicles Gracie’s debut in UFC 1 on November 12, 1993, when the fighter achieved the unthinkable during the organization’s inaugural competition. This night that had him besting three competitors is considered to be that on which the UFC was born.
Derived from Japanese jiu-jitsu, which is rooted in samurai traditions, Gracie Jiu-jitsu formed in Brazil in the 1920s when Japanese fighter Mitsuyo Maeda moved from Japan to...

Fight Valley isn’t the kind of movie I usually watch, so I was quite intrigued to see if I would enjoy it. I like a good action flick, and I like crime drama when it’s done well, so there was enough going on in the synopsis of this film to grab my attention. The main appeal of the film though is the casting of many well known Ufc names. Let’s talk about that for a moment.

Ken Shamrock has had a seen it all, done it all sort of career. He has been a Ufc champion, and appeared in the first ever Ufc event. He has been a Pancrase champion, wrestled in Japan, and went on to become an intercontinental champion in the WWE. As a pro wrestler, he was probably underrated. As a mixed martial artist, he was a pioneer – but time waits for no man.
Friday night at Bellator 149, Shamrock met longtime rival Royce Gracie, the man who beat him way back at Ufc 1, for the third time in their respective careers. The fifty-two year old Shamrock hadn’t won since 2010, and had recently lost to Kimbo Slice in Bellator. Gracie, however, hadn’t fought in over nine years, and at forty-nine years old himself and a decade removed from the action, it looked like Shamrock might finally get...

Months back, during Bellator 145: Vengeance, Bellator Mma unveiled its newest big name connection to the pro wrestling world: Kurt Angle. Angle joined the Bellator Mma family that night, stepping into the broadcast booth to add his insights into the Bobby Lashley vs. James Thompson fight (the most watched bout of the evening, which Lashley handily won).
He was also immediately confronted with the obvious question: would he fight in Bellator? To make a long story short, Angle said he would consider it.
Now, he’s talking possible opponents, and he’s being pretty realistic about just who he wants to face.
Speaking to The Roman Show, Angle said he was not planning on fighting anyone in their prime (so you can probably eliminate a bout with Bobby Lashley), but was absolutely open to fighting an “Mma legend” – and he absolutely named names.

The big news leading into Bellator 129 has very little to do with the action inside the Bellator cage: Bellator Mma has signed Ufc Hall of Famer and their inaugural champion Royce Gracie. The news actually broke in the build-up to Bellator 128, but with a title fight headlining that card (won by Joe Warren, now the promotion’s first full-fledged two weight class champ), there was still a lot to talk about. Bellator 129, however, has largely been overshadowed by continued talk of the signing of Gracie, one of the biggest names in Mma history – though well past the point of actual combat.
Instead, Gracie will serve as a “Promotional Brand Ambassador” – meaning he’ll show up at events and no doubt help lure fighters to the promotion. It’s a Chuck Liddell type of job, something that the Ufc probably should have given him – but may have passed on because...

This is part two in a series of articles looking at the top draws through the years in Mma. For this time period, the only shows being looked at are Ufc shows. Part 1, looking at 1993-1995, is located here.
Royce Gracie, the top draw for the previous time period, had left the Ufc. Ken Shamrock was still around but would leave the promotion at the end of 1996. It was a period of change indeed for the Ufc. In addition to losing their two biggest stars they were also receiving pressure from government agencies because of the perceived brutality of the shows they were putting on. By mid-97, many cable companies were no longer carrying the Ufc pay per views. The owners at the time continued to run the shows but buyrates fell as the stars left and the carriage of the pay per views continued to fall.

We’ll include all drugs, not just steroids, to mix things up a little.
Drugs have wreaked havoc in Mma over the years, and some notable names have come out in favour of strong testing and enforcement, including one of the greatest of all time, Georges St. Pierre, who voluntarily submitted to more intense drug testing than most fighters during what would become his final match to date in the Ufc. Roy “Big Country” Nelson has been another vocal opponent against PEDs (performance enhancing drugs) in the sport. Both these fighters are fan favourites, and a reflection of them in...

From that very first event which took place all those years ago in Denver, the power of grappling and submission in Mma has been abundantly clear. A slim, narrow-shouldered Royce Gracie would shock the world by grappling his way to win the first Ufc championship, demonstrating just how effective a submission fighter could be. Though now the unified Mma rules have introduced a set of weight classes, a skilled grappler is able to fight against a man much larger than himself and succeed purely through technique. As we have seen time and time again in the Octagon, a well-timed, well-disguised, well-executed submission can alter the tide of or even end a fight in seconds. Indeed, watching a fighter come from behind to catch his opponent in a skilful submission off of his or her back can be as good as it gets in Mma.

Despite the numerous controversies which still exist in the sport of Mma and more specifically its premier promotion the Ufc today, anybody who has been a fan since the days of Royce Gracie, Don Fry and Ken Shamrock will know just how far the sport has come. Gone are the days of the post-fight battle royals between the trainers, the plans to have the Octagon surrounded by a moat filled with crocodiles and when the rules didn’t prohibit Keith Hackney from smashing Joe Son’s testicles. Now all bouts are sanctioned by a governing state athletic commission, all fighters are required to take part in thorough random drugs tests and a unified set of rules prevent potentially dangerous attacks like kicking the head of a grounded opponent. Since those early days the Ufc has transformed from a spectacle to a legitimate, bona fide sport.

To everything, there is a season to shut it down. Through seven years, 138 episodes, 14 Emmy wins and what its writers estimate as 23,000 hard-won punch lines, 30 Rock and its frequently food-stained heroine, Liz Lemon, have taught us that much, at least. (Other key lessons: "Never go with a hippie to a second location," and beware of the white dudes who "inject AIDS into our chicken nuggets.")
The show's final episode will air January 31st, so for Jack, Liz, Tracy, Jenna and Kenneth, for Grizz and for Dotcom, too, these are the end times.

Tim Tebow has begun training with some of the baddest men on the planet ... men who revolutionized the art of hand-to-hand combat ... the legendary Gracie family. In case you're unaware, the Gracie family basically built the Ufc -- and badasses like Royce Gracie have destroyed countless opponents by using a special form of Brazilian jiu-jitsu created by his father, Helio Gracie. Now, the New York Jets quarterback has joined up with the Gracie family at...

Wesley Snipes has signed to star in and produce the martial arts comedy "Master Daddy" for Maandi Media Entertainment and Tayrona Entertainment Group reports Variety.
In what could be seen as almost an 'Expendables of the martial arts circuit', dozens of martial arts and fighting arts stars will populate the cast including Chuck Norris, Sonny Chiba, Royce Gracie, Sammo Hung, Dan Inosanto, Phillip Rhee, Tony Jaa, Lee Mosely, Bob Wall, Rampage, Anderson Silva and Ron Van Cleff. Musicians Rock Steady, Jabbawakkies and Quest Crew will also appear.
Filming kicks off this Fall for release next year. Dan Meachum and James Ordonez are also producing but no word on who'll pen the script or direct.

Ufc 112: Invincible marks the Middle Eastern debut for the Ultimate Fighting Championship. As with the promotion’s previous invasions of new markets there is more at work than simply who is fighting in the cage.
Huge Favorites and Big Underdogs
When Manny Pacquiao fought Joshua Clottey no one gave the fighter from Ghana much of a chance to defeat boxing’s reigning pound-for-pound king. The fight was unbearably one-sided (it may have been the diarrhea causing Banku and Okra stew that Clottey ate the night before) but that didn’t stop the fans from buying over 700,000 pay-per views.
Ufc 112 finds itself in a similar situation. Two pound-for-pound kings in Anderson Silva and B.J. Penn plus a fading legend in Matt Hughes provide the card big star power. Yet, according to the odds-makers, their collective opponents have a snowball’s chance in hell of winning.
The most competitive fight, at least according to the bookies,...
