In the opening scene of Chino Moya’s grimmer-than-Grimm dystopian fairy tale collection, “Undergods,” a pair of grungy near-future garbagemen scour the ruins of a ghostly former metropolis looking for bodies. Like the Black Plague cleanup crew in “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” — the occasionally too-efficient “bring out your dead!” guys — it doesn’t matter whether the corpses they come across are even fully deceased: The collectors toss the bodies into the back of their cart either way. Should the poor souls turn out to still be alive, they can always sell them for precious cans of scarce food back at the depot.
Moya’s vision may be bleak — and “vision” is the right word to describe the Spanish-born director’s stunning capacity to create images and atmosphere — but there’s something unnervingly familiar about the world he creates in his feature debut. Between that twisted introductory vignette and...

I’ve mentioned it many times before but I really enjoy a good anthology movie. I’m not sure exactly why but from the classic eighties horror anthologies to the more modern takes on genres, they always grab my attention. Undergods manages to have a style and tone like no other anthology I have seen before.
The ‘wrap-around’ works much better than many other anthology movies, as we see two street scavengers, K & Z, who are loading dead bodies into their truck while chatting about their dreams. These chats lead to the other ‘segments’ of the movie. This wrap-around introduces us to the world that it is all set in. A bleak, industrial ‘future’ that is full of grey,...

Heading into surgery is stressful enough, but Alison (Maaike Neuville) has no idea what awaits her when she arrives at Klinika Krawczyk for a breast-reduction operation. She’s joined by her mother Oksana (Taeke Nicolai), who’s in for a procedure of her own, and her boyfriend Michael (Bart Hollanders), who’s not keen on the sight of blood. His hemophobia will be sorely tested after he discovers the result of a “rejuvenation treatment based on experimental skin cell technology” (as Dr. Krawczyk describes it), which soon escapes and spreads a deadly plague throughout the hospital. In a desolate and decrepit cityscape, presumably in the time after some unspecified apocalypse, K (Johann Myers) and Z (Géza Röhrig) drive a garbage truck, picking up the dead bodies that lie strewn along their route. This is just the framing device for writer/director Chino Moya’s first feature, which drifts and digresses into other stories, all centring on a man whose familial equilibrium is disrupted by the sudden arrival of an outsider. A neighbour (Ned Dennehy) shows up at Ron (Michael Gould) and Ruth’s (Hayley Carmichael) door; a foreign inventor (Jan Bijvoet) proposes a project to Hans (Eric Godon) and Dom’s (Adrian Rawlins) life is turned upside down when his wife Rachel’s (Kate Dickie) first husband (Sam Louwyck) mysteriously reappears after fifteen years.
In the stories involving married couples, Moya seems to be building an allegory about the lack of communication, drawing parallels between the...

We all like to think we have control—kings of our proverbial castles. It’s all a ruse, though. We’re actually slaves to a system that seems more and more likely to fail with each new day and each new declaration that its imminent demise is a call to arms to save it rather than move on and evolve. That false sense of control is thus a mechanism we use to combat the fear of knowing how little we truly possess. We dream of other men failing so as not to realize that unfortunate soul is probably a future version of ourselves. We play God opposite those we believe are beneath us because we feel the pressure of those above doing the same. And there’s absolutely no way out.
Filmmaker Chino Moya is optimistic, though. Rather than present his debut feature Undergods as an unavoidably prescient vision of where we’re headed,...

"I saw a man... eating a man!" Shudder has released another new Us trailer for the zombie comedy horror Yummy, from Dutch director Lars Damoiseaux. It's described as a "an orgy of blood, violence and fun." The film stars Maaike Neuville, Bart Hollanders, Clara Cleymans, Benjamin Ramon, Eric Godon, and Annick Christiaens. Luc Besson returns to cinema screens with his first, and presumably last, film he will be afforded to make after the colossal financial failure of his predeceasing feature Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, that has plunged his production company into chaos and, has been levelled a string of sexual assault allegations against the famed director whose credits include Leon and The Fifth Element. Besson’s latest, on paper at least, is exactly what he needs to fight against in his dark corner of sexual aggression. Gaining back an audience’s trust while also generating a significant profit margin to secure a future for his production company. However with Anna, his latest, Besson fails on both fronts.

"A powerful man does not become so without sin." Rlj Entertainment has unveiled a second trailer for the indie action thriller Pilgrimage, set in Ireland during the 13th century. The story follows a group of monks who must escort a sacred relic across the "Irish landscape fraught with peril". Starring Richard Armitage, Tom Holland, John Lynch, Stanley Weber, Lochlann O'Mearáin, Hugh O'Conor, Eric Godon, plus the badass Jon Bernthal as a character named "The Mute". We already posted the first official trailer for this earlier in the year, but I'm glad to see another one reminding us that this is finally coming out soon. They're obviously playing up Tom Holland from Spider-Man: Homecoming, but the entire cast looks great. Here's the second official trailer (+ poster) for Brendan Muldowney's Pilgrimage, direct from YouTube: You can still watch the first official trailer for Pilgrimage here, to see even more footage from this film.

"You will see the safe delivery of our holiest relic to Rome. Go with God." Rlj Entertainment has debuted a trailer for an indie action thriller titled Pilgrimage, set in the religious times of 13th century Ireland. The film is about to premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival this month, hence the release of the trailer to build extra buzz. The story follows a group of monks who must escort a sacred relic across the "Irish landscape fraught with peril". There's plenty of gnarly violence in this. Starring Richard Armitage, Tom Holland, John Lynch, Stanley Weber, Lochlann O'Mearáin, Hugh O'Conor, Eric Godon, plus the badass Jon Bernthal as a character named "The Mute". This actually looks pretty cool, consider me interested. Here's the first official trailer for Brendan Muldowney's Pilgrimage, originally from Yahoo: A small band of Catholic monks keep to a solemn routine on a remote Irish coast.

How sweet! Fresh meat! At least for our friends across the pond. Here in the States our meats are usually processed with fillers like pretty teens, PG-13 kills, and of course floating heads on posters.

There's nothing finer than hearing that a horror film affected folks so strongly that they fainted. It never ceases to amaze and amuse us, and that's just the case concerning the Toronto International Film Festival premiere of The Incident (review here).
According to Deadline the Alexandre Courtes-directed flick that screened this morning in the Midnight Madness category is clearly not for the squeamish. Apparently two moviegoers fainted during the flick and an ambulance was called. One person fainted when one of the characters was tied to a stove top and burned alive. No word on the other.
Later in the day IFC Midnight finalized a U.S. distribution rights deal for The Incident.
Rupert Evans, Kenny Doughty, Unax Ugalde, Dave Legeno, Anna Skellern, Richard Brake, Eric Godon, Joseph Kennedy, and Marcus Garvey star. Look for more on this one soon!

The film stars Yolande Moreau, Emilie Dequenne, Eric Godon, Philippe Nahon, and Benjamin Biolay. Its synopsis follows:
The Pack follows Charlotte (Emilie Dequenne), a beautiful but rough around the edges kind of girl, who drives a beat-up station wagon in the countryside of northern France. Her journey takes a turn when she picks up a mysterious hitchhiker (Benjamine Biolay), with whom she strikes an unusual bond. Stopping at a roadside diner, her new companion strangely disappears, and Charlotte finds herself knocked unconscious and held captive. Big news coming out of the Toronto International Film Festival today. The lineup for the documentary slate was announced earlier and now the Midnight Madness programme has also been announced. The entire list of genre films playing are listed below and personally I think this is the most exciting in the program’s history. These 10 films close each day of the festival to thousands of hardcore fans who flock out to the Ryerson Theatre each night.
“Ravenous cinephiles will devour the roster of chillers, action thrillers and pitch-black comedies that fill this year’s slate,” said Tiff Programmer Colin Geddes in a press release. “Martial arts assassins, cops and robbers, escaped lunatics and vampire ballerinas will take over Ryerson Theatre every night at midnight, and deliver the shocking and rocking experience that our loyal audience flocks to take part in, helping make these screenings so memorable.”
Here is the list:...

Franck Richard's 'The Pack' (Aka 'La Meute') has been picked up by Icon here in the UK and will be receiving a UK-based DVD and Blu-Ray release! And in addition to this great bit of newsage it appears that the Brit horror illustrator Graham Humphreys will be providing the sleeve art (check it out below). Humphreys, as you should know(!), is responsible for some fantastic artwork from some classic horror's such as 'Evil Dead', 'Evil Dead II', 'Basket Case' and a bunch of 'A Nightmare on Elm Street' video artwork too (parts 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5). My personal favourite is his 'Evil Dead 2' UK Quad poster which has been attached to my office wall for years! 'The Pack' stars stars Emilie Dequenne (below), Yolande Moreau, Eric Godon, Philippe Nahon, Benjamin Biolay, Brice Fournier and is written as well as helmed by Richard. Check the artwork and trailer below.
