Many networks, including BET, are in the holiday spirit. Clarence Williams is the screenwriter behind Too Many Christmases, and Kenny Young lent his directorial talent to this made-for-tv movie.

It follows a newly married couple, Jerome and Kayla, who can’t wait to celebrate their first Christmas together. However, there’s an issue. They have no idea if their families get along, so they agree to spend Christmas with both of them.

Too Many Christmases is filled with laughs.

It’s that time of year when Hallmark and Great American Family put out a cavalcade of Christmas films. Many of them feature soap opera stars. Mark Duplass, star of The Morning Show, is to be handed the Excellence in Acting Award at the upcoming SeriesFest event.

The event is held in Denver between May 1 and 5 and features the likes of Minnie Driver and the cast of Grey’s Anatomy across its lineup.

Duplass, who also co-created HBO series Togetherness, is giving an Innovation Talk, where he will be handed the award. Duplass has also starred in The League, Goliath and The Mindy Project as well as being behind films such as The Puffy Chair and Cyrus as well as HBO’s anthology series Room 104 and a raft of documentaries including Evil Genius, Wild Wild Country and Sasquatch.

Also joining the lineup are Shark Tank’s Daymond John, who will be in conversation with Emil Pinnock and SAG-AFTRA Leadership, including Linda Powell, Shari Belafonte and Jodi Long.

The international distribution company Glass House Distribution has acquired the worldwide rights to “The Private Eye,” a mystery, comedy and romance. The film was written and directed by Jack Cook and stars comedian Matt Rife. Glass House Distribution will represent the movie at the Cannes Film Festival in May with all territories available.

The official description for the film reads, “Private investigator Mort Madison (Matt Rife) has seen his better days. A mysterious woman, Michelle (Clare Grant) hires him to spy on David (Elliot), whom he believed to be her lover. In the detective process Mort himself falls in love with Michelle and decides the only way he can be with her is by eliminating David from the equation. Mort hopes this will entice Michelle to run away with him and live happily ever after only to reveal a mind-blowing twist.”

The latest on-screen adaptation of Frank Herbert's 1965 novel, Dune: Part Two (2024), directed by Denis Villeneuve, is leaps and bounds better than its predecessor. Within mere moments, there is a palpable but welcome difference in tone, action, and just about everything else that this film -- roughly the second half of the novel -- has to deliver. Here is a sci-fi film that currently serves as the best argument for handing the keys over to an individual instead of a board of trustees, and allowing them to sift the sand for its hidden treasures.

Rustin is a biographical drama film directed by George C. Wolfe, from a screenplay by Julian Breece and Dustin Lance Black. The Netflix film is based on the life of civil rights activist Bayard Rustin, who helped Martin Luther King Jr. and others organize the 1963 March on Washington. The film shows us how history erased him from the civil rights movement he helped build just because an openly gay Black man. Rustin stars Colman Domingo in the lead role of Bayard Rustin, with Chris Rock, Jeffrey Wright, Aml Ameen, Lilli Kay, and Johnny Ramey starring in supporting roles. Like all great stories, Frankenstein has a universality that seems applicable to just about every historical moment, which means that film remakes in the '50s (Hammer Horror films), '70s (Flesh for Frankenstein), and 2010s (Depraved) have the opportunity to be brilliantly potent.

The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster is not the first version of Frankenstein set in the Black community. There was Black Frankenstein, better known as Blackenstein, back in 1973 and more recently FrankenThug. The difference is while the previous two versions were exploitation films, writer/director Bomani J. Story set out to make a more serious film, one that like Mary Shelly’s novel, is out to do more than just deliver scares.

Vicaria has not had an easy life. At eight she saw her mother shot and killed. In the wake of that, Chris started working for local gang boss Kango and ended up dead. Now she watches her father Donald struggle to support her despite the growing drug habit he’s developed trying to cope with their deaths.

It’s the first full week of June and summer is upon us, with six new horror movies headed our way this week. Best of all, most of them will be available to watch from the comfort of home.

We had previously heard that Rlje Films will be giving the film a theatrical, VOD, and digital release on June 9th, but now those plans have changed slightly. The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster will still be reaching theatre screens on June 9th, but the VOD and digital side of the release has been shifted back to June 23rd. So the film will have a two week theatre-only run before it’s available to watch at home.

Crypt TV, an entertainment company that was launched in 2015 by Jack Davis and Eli Roth, with Blumhouse Productions on board as an investor, has put together it first domestic feature film: a new take on Mary Shelley’s classic story Frankenstein called The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster. Rlje Films will be giving The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster a theatrical, VOD, and digital release on June 9th, and a trailer for the film is now online! You can check it out in the embed above.

This weekend, writer/director Bomani J. Story celebrated the premiere of his debut feature, The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster, at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival. The story follows an ambitious science-focused teenager named Vicaria (Laya DeLeon Hayes), who believes that she has found the way to cheat death, but her experiments come with a hefty price tag attached when her monstrous creation begins to rack up a body count once it is unleashed into the community.

The Overlook Film Festival has unveiled the full lineup for its 2023 edition, taking place in New Orleans from March 30-April 2, naming the world premiering Universal horror-comedy Renfield as its opening night film, and Warner Bros’ Evil Dead Rise as its closer.

The former title starring Nicholas Hoult (The Menu) as the tortured henchman of Dracula (Nicolas Cage) will be showcased via a live Q&a with Cage and director Chris McKay, as well as an Opening Night Vampire Ball, ahead of its April 14 theatrical release.

The latter, marking the latest in the storied horror franchise from Sam Raimi, comes to the renowned horror festival after world premiering at SXSW. Lee Cronin directed from his script, with Lily Sullivan, Alyssa Sutherland, Morgan Davies, Gabrielle Echols and Nell Fisher amongst the ensemble.

This year’s Overlook lineup consists of 26 features and 24 shorts from 12 countries, along with interactive events, live performances, immersive programming and more.

Nearly a year ago, we heard that Crypt TV, an entertainment company that was launched in 2015 by Jack Davis and Eli Roth, with Blumhouse Productions on board as an investor, was putting together it first domestic feature film: a new take on Mary Shelley’s classic story Frankenstein that would be called The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster. Now Variety reports that The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster has secured a distribution deal with Rlje Films and its sister brands under AMC Networks, Shudder and AllBlk. Rlje will be giving the film a theatrical release sometime this summer, then later in the year it will be streaming on Shudder and AllBlk.

Premiering at the upcoming SXSW Film Festival, The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster has been acquired by Rlje Films and Shudder, Variety reports this afternoon.

Inspired by Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, “The movie follows a brilliant teenager who believes death is a disease that can be cured. After the brutal and sudden murder of her brother, the teen embarks on a dangerous journey to bring him back to life.”

Variety notes, “Rlje will release the film in theaters this summer. Shudder and Allblk will follow with streaming debuts later in 2023.”

The horror-thriller is debuting in the Austin-based festival’s “Visions” category, a special program that “champions audacious, risk-taking artists in the new cinema landscape.”

The movie follows a brilliant teenager who believes death is a disease that can be cured. After the brutal and sudden murder of her brother, the teen embarks on a dangerous journey to bring him back to life. It’s a journey inspired by Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein.”

Holy hell this year’s SXSW Film Festival really isn’t messing around.

Starting production in North Carolina in June, the film is a reimagining of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, following teenage anti-hero, Vicaria, who is on a desperate quest to cure death.
