Amazon has landed an untitled crime action thriller, which is being eyed as the next movie for Leitch, the director behind snappy heist thriller Bullet Train, comic book sequel Deadpool 2 and last year’s breezy stunt lovefest Fall Guy.
Leitch will also produce with wife and producing partner Kelly McCormick via their 87North banner, as well as with Imagine’s Brian Grazer, Jeb Brody and Allan Mandelbaum.
Amazon, Imagine and 87North are keeping plot details locked in a vault, but the script is written by Mark Bianculli. Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the story centers on a group of savvy bank robbers who use social media to document their heists, playing a cat-and-mouse game with police. These days, Salma Hayek is known for her roles in Eternals, From Dusk Till Dawn, and Wild Wild West. The talented actress has earned acclaim for her adaptability, although she retains strong ties to her comedic roots. She’s earned plenty of well-deserved fans since then, but many have missed her best role. Way back in 2002, Hayek landed the leading role in Julie Taymor’s Frida, a surrealistic biographical drama about Frida Kahlo. That role rightfully propelled Hayek’s career into the stratosphere, and she’s been climbing the cinematic ladder ever since.
So, what makes the film so special? Like many of Julie Taymor’s films, the entirety of Frida is a meticulous masterpiece. It’s more than a simple biography. It’s a fully reconstructed world, and its characters act accordingly. Simply starring in such an “artsy” film is difficult enough, but the subject matter must also be considered.

Will & Harper, the Netflix documentary about comedic actor Will Ferrell and his friendship with SNL pal Harper Steele who came out as trans, earned a spot on the coveted Oscar documentary feature shortlist today.
It wasn’t the only shortlist honor for the film directed by Josh Greenbaum. The tune from the closing credits – “Will and Harper Go West,” written by SNL alum Kristen Wiig and Sean Douglas and performed by Wiig – got shortlisted for Best Original Song (Douglas is the son of actor Michael Keaton).
But another high-profile documentary in the running for the shortlist didn’t make the cut: Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, about the late actor who was paralyzed in a horse-riding accident. That film, directed by Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui, recently won Best Documentary Feature at the Critics Choice Documentary Awards, and last week earned a nomination for the Producers Guild of America Award.

From musicals and body horror to international gems and star-driven documentaries, Tuesday’s Oscar shortlists will reveal who’s acing awards season — and who might be struggling to pass.
The Oscar shortlists in 10 key categories are the awards season equivalent of midterm report cards. For studios and strategists, these announcements offer crucial insight into which contenders resonate with voters and which campaigns might run out of steam. As the industry braces for surprises and snubs, some big players are poised to lead the charge, while others hope for last-minute breakthroughs.
Last year, Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” dominated the shortlists with five mentions, including sound, original score and three songs. However, its omission from makeup and hairstyling — a category where it seemed like a shoo-in — hinted at possible vulnerabilities. Ultimately, the film landed eight Oscar nominations, winning one for Billie Eilish and Finneas’ poignant original song, “What Was I Made For?...

Netflix’s Maria is the latest subversive biopic from acclaimed filmmaker Pablo Larraín, exploring the tumultuous life of opera singer Maria Callas. The film centers around the celebrity’s final days before her death, exploring the impact of her work on both the world around her and her own psyche. It’s a dark, twisted tale of fame, ambition, and corruption that certainly doesn’t stick to the formula when it comes to historical biopics. The film is notably one of Angelina Jolie’s best projects yet, as she delivers a groundbreaking performance in the lead role.
Larrain has a very unique style of filmmaking that’s totally unlike anything else that came before it, but there are certainly traces of influence and inspiration that can be found in Maria. The film’s dark, socially relevant exploration of womanhood and success is something that’s often explored in these kinds of films,...

Oscar-Contending ‘Frida’ Team On Tracking Down Famed Mexican Artist’s Treasures In Unexpected Places

For their Oscar-contending documentary Frida, director Carla Gutiérrez, producer Katia Maguire and team conducted extraordinarily detailed research into artist Frida Kahlo, a quest that extended from Mexico City to an attic in Cape Cod, Mass.
The east coast venture took them to the doorstep of historian Hayden Herrera, author of the definitive study Frida: A Biography of Frida Kahlo. Herera thought the Smithsonian Institution had already picked up all her materials for the book, but it turned out that wasn’t entirely true. Up the ladder the filmmakers climbed.
“In the very back corner of the attic, we found a box that said ‘Frida’ on it,” Gutiérrez recalls. It contained Herrera’s original research, transcripts of interviews she had conducted, Kahlo’s personal correspondence and “really magical things like that…. [Herrera] was the first person that was able to see the letters that Frida sent to her first boyfriend — many, many...

Frida is not just a documentary about the art and life of Frida Kahlo. Director Carla Gutierrez wanted to use the tools of the format to capture Kahlo’s emotions. Those tools included narration, archival material, score and the creative touch of animating Kahlo’s paintings.
“We wanted to make sure that the audience in a way kind of physically or literally dove into Frida’s heart and into her pool of emotions and was able to like swim in there with her,” Gutierrez said during a conversation for Deadline’s awards-season event Contenders Documentary. “Bringing her art into this filmic space, cinematic space, was really key to really hearing in a way her heart beat and her emotions go through her veins.”
Gutierrez credits her animation department in Mexico City on their collaboration. As well, Katia Maguire led the production team to gather archival material in Mexico, including about...

Six directors of standout 2024 documentaries gathered in late November for THR’s annual Documentary Roundtable.
Two were veteran American documentary filmmakers: R.J. Cutler, who helmed Netflix’s Martha, a portrait of Martha Stewart that explores the price of pursuing perfection, and Disney’s Elton John: Never Too Late, which contrasts the rise to stardom with the farewell tour of the singer-songwriter (David Furnish co-directed the latter); and Matt Tyrnauer, director of Greenwich Films’ Carville: Winning Is Everything, Stupid, a profile of James Carville, the legendary Democratic strategist. Another was Swiss-born Ian Bonhôte, whose third doc, which he directed with Peter Ettedgui, is Warner Bros.’ Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, in which the life, work and tragic accident of the titular beloved movie star is examined 20 years after his death.

It’s been an extraordinary week for No Other Land, the timely documentary directed by a collective of Israeli and Palestinian filmmakers.
The film set in the occupied West Bank won Best Feature Documentary at the 40th IDA Documentary Awards in Los Angeles on Thursday and it also won the Best Director prize for the work of Basel Adra, Hamdan Ballal, Rachel Szor, and Yuval Abraham. The quartet of filmmakers also received the IDA’s Courage Under Fire Award, a previously announced honor recognizing the difficult and dangerous conditions in which the film was made.
No Other Land swept most of the awards announced this week: on Monday, it won Best Documentary at the Gotham Awards, and on Tuesday, the New York Film Critics Circle named it the best documentary of the year. There are no known recordings of Frida Kahlo’s voice. But the iconic painter, who died in 1954, tells her own story in director Carla Gutiérrez’s documentary “Frida,” which is guided by her words (spoken by actress Fernanda Echevarría) from interviews, essays and diaries.
Acclaimed for its semi-animated visual strategy, the film (available on Amazon Prime) is also a sensory aural experience, propelled by a passionate, rhapsodic score by Victor Hernández Stumpfhauser. The Burbank-based, Mexican-born conductor and songwriter’s credits include features, shorts and three compositions on the “Birdman” soundtrack.
For the documentary, he said, “I thought of the music as Frida’s inner voice, sort of like her spirit. We think of Frida as very strong, loud, rebellious, which is an important part of her, but I wanted the music to also relate to the vulnerable, intimate side of her personality. Currently in post-production the feature documentary produced is by Bedi and Anna Saura through Bedi’s Contentflow Studios, with Bedi and Maria Salgado co-directing. For three years, Netflix has gone without a Best Documentary Feature Oscar nomination for one its originals, a surprising dry spell for a streamer used to dominating the category. But it looks like the drought is about to end.

Variety hosted its inaugural Doc Dreams NYC event on Nov. 12, featuring two panels with some of this award season’s top documentary feature contenders.
Speakers on the first panel included Carla Gutiérrez, director and editor of “Frida”; Irene Taylor, director and producer of “I Am: Celine Dion”; and R.J. Cutler, director and producer of “Elton John: Never Too Late.”
“I Am: Celine Dion” follows the Canadian singer’s musical journey and life-altering illness, the latter of which Taylor admitted she was not aware of prior to signing onto the project.
“I was so intrigued and encouraged by Celine herself when we had met and talked through the idea of a film,” Taylor said. “I think she was ready to spend the amount of time that a thorough biography with a living subject would offer.”

With a career spanning over three decades and numerous roles in acclaimed films, it's unsurprising that Salma Hayek has a high net worth. She began her acting career in Mexico, where she quickly rose to fame with her starring role in the popular telenovela Teresa. This early success paved the way for her transition to Hollywood in the early 1990s. Hayeks breakthrough role came with Desperado (1995), starring opposite Antonio Banderas. Over the years, Hayek has taken on diverse roles, most notably in Frida (2002), where she portrayed Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, earning critical acclaim and an Academy Award nomination.

When Imagine Documentaries president Sara Bernstein pitched New York Post gossip columnist Cindy Adams on making a film about her career, even the veteran journalist didn’t understand why Bernstein was interested. “What do you want to make a doc about me for?” Adams asked the “Jim Henson: Idea Man” producer. “Everybody has a documentary. My dentist has a documentary!”
Good line — and she must have a great dentist.
An incomplete list of this year’s celebrity docs includes Simone Biles, Celine Dion, Steve Martin, Roger Federer, Stevie van Zandt, Brian Eno, Frida Kahlo, Devo, Christopher Reeve, Sue Bird, Andrea Bocelli, Elton John, Martha Stewart, John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Paul Anka, Pharrell Williams, and Bruce Springsteen.
The appetite seems nearly endless, but producers say it’s increasingly difficult to find famous people whose lives haven’t flashed before our eyes. Said Bernstein, “The challenge today is, who hasn’t had a documentary?...

The Conners is a sitcom that originally premiered in 2018 as a continuation to the hit show Roseanne, following the firing of Roseanne Barr, the original show's main star. Moving away from the character Roseanne, The Conners focuses on the members of the Conner family, mainly Darlene, Becky, Dan, and Jackie, who are all navigating through life without Roseanne for the first time, while supporting each other and the rest of the family. Since the show began in 2018, it's covered important topics such as addiction and alcoholism, family drama, gun violence, Covid, the cost of living crisis and loss.
Although the show has been very successful in recent years, when the show was first released, audience members were skeptical about what the show would be like without Roseanne. It didn't take too long for the show to get over Roseanne and make a name for itself without the character. The Conners...

Salma Hayek ain’t one to jump at just any script, especially when it’s a role even Jennifer Lopez passed on. When it came to this particular movie, Hayek had to do some serious soul-searching before giving her nod. After all, Hollywood’s glittering lights don’t always mean the story’s golden, right?
A still of Salma Hayek from Frida (2002) | Ventanarosa

The South by Southwest debut of “Stormy” was not your typical Imagine Documentaries premiere.
About adult film star Stormy Daniels’ alleged affair with former President Donald Trump, the film drew an eclectic crowd that included porn stars and “Muppet” director-producer Frank Oz, who sat in the same row as Daniels and her entourage made up mainly of buff bodyguards. Dogs sniffed Austin’s Stateside Theater prior to the screening. After it unspooled, Daniels spoke to the SXSW audience, revealing that she first met “Stormy” exec producer Judd Apatow when he hired her for a small part in his 2005 film “40 Year-Old Virgin.” When she was a no-show due to a death in the family, Apatow sent her flowers and rescheduled her shoot date.
“I thought he would replace me,” Daniels, who would go on to appear in “Knocked Up” for the filmmaker, told the crowd, with director Sarah Gibson standing nearby.

Not to be confused with the 2002 narrative film by director Julie Taymor, starring Salma Hayek and Alfred Molina as Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera of the same name, the new documentary Frida is an honest and lovingly constructed film that brings to the forefront the far-reaching influence of Kahlo and her work, further solidifying her status as an artist of singular importance.
The film is narrated by Fernanda Echevarría, performing as Frida Kahlo reading from her diary, letters, essays, and various printed interviews. This approach, when presented alongside the vivid animations of Kahlo’s work breathes an extraordinary amount of life into an already extraordinary life. The story unfolds as both a raw and methodical journey throughout Kahlo’s life that never strays from the central through line of her search for beauty through art.
Carla Gutierrez makes an impressive directorial debut with Frida after amassing an astonishingly impressive resume of credits as an editor.
