However, the sci-fi fantasy genre TV shows are proving to be the biggest ones this year with the release of shows like Fallout and 3 Body Problem. The sci-fi fans are having a great year, and if TV shows weren’t enough, we also got Dune: Part Two this year, which was the most successful sci-fi fantasy film in 2024. So, let’s check out the best new and returning sci-fi fantasy shows that came out last year.

Arcane features many of the best characters in television history. From the central protagonists, Vi and Jinx, to the main supporting cast of Caitlyn, Jayce, Viktor, Mel, Ekko, and Heimerdinger, the animated series spends as much time as it can developing them all as they each undergo their personal struggles. These characters' stories aren't told in isolation, and one of the greatest strengths of the show is the way it ties them all together.
Arcane is a character-driven series, and the relationships between its cast are what make it a masterpiece. The series is filled with romances, friendships, rivalries, and familial relationships, and none of them feels like any other. Even characters who barely know each other and don't get to spend a significant amount of time with one another manage to create engaging dynamics together.

The Last of Us and Arcane are two critically acclaimed adaptations of radically different video games, yet both tackle the same story and emotional hook. Arcane is based on League of Legends, a game that is classified as a Moba, or multiplayer online battle arena. This means that there is minimal story within the game itself, with most of its characters and world-building being done by supplemental material. By the time of Arcane season 2's ending, the Netflix animation was one such piece of supplemental material that took characters from the video game and crafted an engrossing story around them.
The Last of Us, on the other hand, is the polar opposite of a Moba. The game is entirely story-driven, telling one of the most cinematic stories with the most well-rounded characters in video game history. HBO's The Last of Us adapted this game almost exactly, keeping large elements of...

Warning: Major Spoilers ahead for the Arcane series finale!Arcane writer Amanda Overton has revealed how the Netflix series was able to deviate from established League of Legends lore and how much freedom they had. Throughout the series, many characters in Arcane were altered from their in-game counterparts, such as Viktor (Harry Lloyd) being connected to magic more than machines, like his original rendition. The story also wasn't afraid to kill anyone off, with a good chunk of familiar champions dying during the final three episodes of the series. This begs the question as to how much freedom the show had regarding established characters.
Speaking with GamesRadar, Overton revealed Riot Games gave the creators of Arcane complete freedom in developing the League of Legends TV show. This included being able to kill off any champions they wanted in service of the story, alongside changing elements of the lore to better fit the narrative.

Arcane has wrapped up on Netflix with very high acclaim, earning perfect scores on Rotten Tomatoes for both of its two seasons. Getting to that point wasn't cheap, however, given how the series set a record with its whopping production budget.
Previously, it was reported that the two seasons of Arcane collectively cost $250 million to develop. This would make the show the most expensive animated series ever made. In a new interview with Screen Rant, executive music producer Alex Seaver commented on the high cost of the hit show. In part, the budget was attributed to the lengthy development process. Because it was created with the involvement of Riot Games, Seaver suggested there was extra time spent on making sure every aspect of the series was perfect, a luxury they had over typical animated projects in Hollywood.

[Editor’s note: the following article contains spoilers for “Arcane” Season 2.]
The final three-episode arc of “Arcane” Season 2 is just as bold, experimental, and fiercely character-driven as the rest of the Netflix animated series, in no small part because it reflects the show’s construction. Showrunner Christian Linke and the rest of the writing team based with Riot Games were constantly opening hexgates (and/or Zoom calls) with the directors and animators at Fortiche Studios to amp up the visual expression of the emotional journeys.
A key example is the first episode of this last arc, “Pretend Like It’s The First Time.” It transports Ekko (Reed Shannon) into a parallel universe where the undercity of Zaun gets to look more utopian, like its sister city of Piltover, and where many of the characters we’ve lost are still around, and where Vi’s sister Powder has never become Jinx (Ella Purnell). Warning! This review contains spoilers for Arcane season 2, Act III.
Arcane season 2, Act III tells an expectedly stunning story filled with compelling characters, tragic consequences, and thought-provoking themes. Ive made it no secret that I think Netflixs League of Legends show is a modern masterpiece, something that Arcane season 2s ending only solidified. My review for Arcane season 2, Act I included my worries that the show would have too much to conclude in only six episodes, but the final three proved me irrevocably wrong. Arcanes cast of characters united for an exciting ending that did not forego any of the elements that make the show so stunning.
Set in the League of Legends universe, Arcane focuses on sisters Violet and Powder (later Jinx) as they end up on opposite sides of a growing conflict between the wealthy utopia of Piltover and its dark undercity whose citizens wish to break away from their oppressors.

Arcane: League of Legends has stuck the landing with its conclusion on Netflix. Upon reaching the end of its run, the show has wrapped up with unanimous praise from critics for its second and final season.
On Rotten Tomatoes, Arcane Season 2 is holding a perfect score of 100%. This comes after the final episodes recently dropped on Netflix, bringing the story of Arcane to its conclusion. The audience score is almost just as high, as it sits at 93%. The first season also holds a 100% approval rating (with a 97% audience score), making Arcane a perfectly-scored series overall with the critics. Undoubtedly, many fans would have wanted to see another season after the first two have been so strong, but Arcane is also getting the chance to go out with a bang, even if its run was a bit short-lived.

Today, Fortiche Productions and Netflix debuted the final three episodes of their animated series Arcane, based on the League of Legends video game by Riot Games. Arcane has had an incredible run so far, winning numerous awards including the first-ever Emmy for an animated streaming series for its breakout first season. The wait for season 2 was a long one, but the series has proven beyond a doubt that the wait was worth it.
Arcane's second and final season released in three acts, with each surpassing what came before. Act I brought us back into the twin cities of Piltover and Zaun, bringing the fight between the estranged sisters Jinx (Ella Purnell) and Vi (Hailee Steinfeld) to a head. Act II brought back a character believed dead, Vi and Jinx's father Vander (Jb Blanc), who returned as the bestial monster Warwick. It culminated with a devastating battle at the commune...

Netflix recently faced backlash over a promotional image for its hit animated series Arcane, which recently dropped its second and final season. Fans called out the streaming giant on social media for seemingly using AI in one of the promotional posters for Season 2, which features central characters Vi and Jinx. The images have been digitally altered in a way that suggests AI involvement, the far side of the image depicting some less than convincing fingers, and this has led to the image being removed and Arcane creators Riot Games releasing a statement putting forward their stance on the use of AI in any of their IPs.
The image in question appeared as a placeholder on Netflix, and was captured by one viewer. The post, which gained almost six million views, also attracted the attention of Riot Games Brand Lead Alex Shahmir, who responded to the post with the following message:...

If you're like me, you've probably been sobbing along with every new episode of Arcane Season 2. Between the fallout from Jinx's (Ella Purnell) Season 1 attack on Piltover's council and Vi (Hailee Steinfeld) watching Caitlyn (Katie Leung) succumb to the same rage that corrupted her sister, the series' long-awaited follow-up has been as gut-wrenching as its animation has been breathtaking, and the release of last week's second act is no different. Vander's (Jb Blanc) beastly return marks a tragic end for his character at the same time as Isha (Lucy Lowe) gives the show its most unthinkable sacrifice, but one of this week's most poignant moments actually turns back time to tug at our collective heartstrings.

This past weekend, the second act of Arcane season 2 dropped on Netflix. Act I ended with Caitlyn (Katie Leung) becoming the de facto leader of Piltover's new military state, under the watchful guidance of the Noxian warmonger Ambessa Medarda (Ellen Thomas). Meanwhile, Vi (Hailee Steinfeld) had a falling out with Caitlyn after their climactic duel with Jinx (Ella Purnell) and Sevika (Amirah Vann), which ended with Caitlyn going back up to Piltover and Vi disappearing into the heart of Zaun.
To top it all off, Jinx has now become a symbol to the people of Zaun, after her fight with Vi set off a series of colorful powder explosions which shot up through the ventilation system and covered the people and buildings of Piltover. Whether Jinx likes it or not, she's a symbol of resistance. That has some huge repercussions in Act II, as we see how the Zaunites are...

Arcane season 2, Act II somehow tops the fantastic episodes of Act I, overcoming "middle chapter syndrome" with endlessly beautiful animation, a personal story filled with exceptional characters, and lingering mysteries that promise an epic finale. Arcane season 2, Act I's ending left off on a big cliffhanger with Caitlyn enacting martial law against Zaun as Piltover's general and the mysterious Arcane/League of Legends champion known as Singed creating a giant werewolf beast. My review for Arcane season 2, Act I was somewhat glowing, with my only worry being that the last two acts had much left to cover.

Arcane finally delivered on CaitVi, but only after bringing its characters to a point in time where the kiss felt right.
In a conversation with Techradar, showrunners Alex Yee and Christian Linke explained their rationale for holding off on Vi and Caitlyn Kiramman's long-awaited romance until season 2's story matched their respective emotional states. "In the wake of what Caitlyn's lost, Vi can sense there's a fragile trust in this relationship they have, and there's this moment coming up where they'll both have to decide how they're going to be when they're staring down the barrel when they find and fight Jinx," Linke said, referencing Caitlyn's mom being amongst the Piltover leaders killed by Jinx's attack which, in turn, finally turns Vi against her sister.

Set in the League of Legends universe, Netflix's Arcane uses the multiplayer online battle arena video game's extensive lore and engrossing world to tell the story of sisters Vi (Hawkeye's Hailee Steinfeld) and Jinx (Fallout's Ella Purnell). Soon enough, Vi and Jinx find themselves not just embroiled in the conflict, but on opposing sides of Arcane's war. In the wake of Arcane season 1's cliffhanger ending, viewers couldn't be more excited about new episodes.

Arcane season 2 was one of my most anticipated TV shows of 2024, purely due to how great its predecessor was. Arcane season 2 avoids Invincible's release issues, promising a strong conclusion for fans of the animated series. With all episodes set to release at once, Arcane season 2's strategic approach aims to keep fans engaged. Invincible's midseason break hurt the show's momentum, a mistake Arcane season 2 plans to avoid.
Arcane is finally set to return in November with its second season, and it looks set to avoid a major Invincible problem in the process. Netflix's critically acclaimed animated show was a huge hit when it debuted in 2021, but despite its popularity, Arcane will officially end with season 2, making way for future League of Legends adaptations. While the series may be hard to replace, it looks like it will have a strong conclusion, as the show ending on its own terms is promising for its finale, which also suggests the creators have a strong finish in mind.

Netflix has many exciting animated shows planned, some based on video games, appealing to adult audiences. Twilight of the Gods is a delayed but highly anticipated adaption of Norse mythology, helmed by Zack Snyder. Subscribers can expect more animated original series like Gears of War and Heaven's Forest on Netflix soon.
Netflix's most anticipated upcoming original TV shows include many exciting animated shows, as well as new seasons of popular series. The rise of Netflix and other streaming services has coincided with an uptake in serious animation, constituting many animated shows of epic proportions. These shows tell bigger stories, some of which are specifically marketed toward adults, breaking away from the outdated presumption that animation is best for children.
Following the success of TV shows like Castlevania, Netflix has several more anime-style series planned. This is in addition to the streaming service's contribution to stylized 3D animation, illustrated by its smash hit Arcane.
