Netflix's When the Phone Rings features an incredible cast who bring the intense romantic thriller to life. When the Phone Rings follows Baek Sa-eon and Hong Hee-joo, a couple forced into an arranged marriage, which Sa-eon keeps secret. During most of their marriage, in the Netflix K-drama, Sa-eon and Hee-joo keep out of each other's way, but things between them begin to change when Hee-joo gets kidnapped.

Adapted from Geon Eomul-nyeo’s novel, The Number You Have Dialed, When the Phone Rings perfectly blends romance, mystery and thriller. The romantic K-drama includes outstanding performances from its lead actors and supporting cast, who make every scene in the show engaging. While there are several great things about When the Phone Rings, the cast is undoubtedly one of the reasons the series is popular.

One of the darkest chapters in South Korean history is chronicled in “12.12: The Day,” a riveting account of the coup d’état of the 1979 coup d’état that followed the Oct. 26 assassination of authoritarian president Park Chung-hee. Meticulously written and very well-performed by a top-notch cast including Hwang Jung-min (“Deliver Us From Evil”), the first feature from director and co-writer Kim Sung-su since 2016 is an exciting and highly suspenseful political action-thriller that ventures where no South Korean feature has gone before. This forensic examination of events that dashed hopes of democratic reform and plunged the nation into eight more years of severe military rule was a smash hit in its December 2023 release in Korea. Now it marks a worthy competitor in the best international feature film Oscar race as the country’s submission in the category.

With a domestic box office gross of $91.7 million, “12.12” is of those films that serves a purpose beyond entertainment.

Billed as the first official Singapore-Korean co-production, “Ajoomma” is produced by Giraffe Pictures founder Anthony Chen and co-produced by Korea’s Lee Joonhan. It was mostly shot in Korea and had support from the Singapore Film Commission, the Korean Film Council and Seoul Film Commission. Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival announced that the film has four nominations for this year’s Awards: Best Original Screenplay, Best New Director (He Shuming), Best Supporting Actor (Jung Dong-hwan) and Best Leading Actress (Hong Huifang)

In what plays like Singapore’s answer to “About Schmidt,” never-too-late-to-live dramedy “Ajoomma” follows a widowed housewife as she steps out of her comfort zone by making a solo trip to South Korea. This upbeat debut from director He Shuming — whose title is the Korean equivalent of the all-purpose term of respect “Auntie” — offers longtime TV actor Hong Huifang (“Housewives’ Holiday”) a chance to shine in the title role, which has already netted her a Golden Horse Award nom. Selected to rep Singapore at the Oscars, affable “Ajoomma” is more of a dark horse in that race, albeit one with art-house sleeper potential.

The Singapore Film Commission has selected He Shuming’s Singapore-Korea co-production Ajoomma, produced by the city-state’s influential auteur Anthony Chen, as its submission to the best international feature category at the 2023 Oscars.

He’s feature directorial debut, the film traces a middle-aged widow’s obsession with Korean pop culture and her journey of self-discovery when she makes a trip to South Korea.

Ajoomma is set to make its world premiere in the Busan International Film Festival’s New Currents competition, which runs Oct. 5-14.

Produced by Chen’s Giraffe Pictures and co-produced by Korea’s Lee Joonhan, the film was supported by Infocomm Media Development Authority (Imda)’s New Director grant. Beijing-based Rediance is handling international sales. Two of Chen’s previous works as a director, Ilo Ilo (2013) and Wet Season (2019), were submitted by Singapore to past editions of the Oscars.

Taiwanese horror ‘Incantation’ and family drama ‘Coo-Coo 043’ also receive multiple nods.

Soi Cheang’s Hong Kong thriller Limbo leads the nominations for this year’s Golden Horse Awards in Taiwan, followed by Kevin Ko’s local horror Incantation and Chan Ching-lin’s family drama Coo-Coo 043.

Black and white crime noir Limbo, which premiered in Berlinale Special in 2021, secured 14 nods including best film and best director, while Taiwanese titles Incantation and Coo-Coo 043 each received 13 nominations.

The Busan International Film Festival has unveiled its 10-film selection for New Currents, the event’s main competition section that focuses on Asian cinema. Since the festival launched in 1996, the program has been one of the region’s most important platforms for introducing emerging directors.

This year, two Indian films have been selected for the section including Jaishankar Aryar’s debut film Shivamma (2022), which traces the struggles of a poor and uneducated middle-aged woman; and Aamir Bashir’s The Winter Within (2022), which also depicts the suffering of a woman set in the Kashmir region, where political disputes and terrorist attacks are ongoing.

Singapore comedy drama is produced by Antony Chen.

Beijing-based sales agent Rediance has boarded Ajoomma, a Singapore comedy drama directed by He Shuming and produced by Anthony Chen, set to premiere in Busan’s New Currents competition.

Written by He and Kris Ong, it marks the filmmaker’s feature directorial debut, following his Hainanese-language short documentary Letters From The Motherland, which was part of the 667 omnibus film that received its international premiere at Busan in 2017.

Production has wrapped on the long-gestating “Ajoomma,” a feature film that delves into the fascination that Korean pop culture holds for middle-aged women in Asia.

The story, said to be based on the mother of director He Shuming, involves a K-drama-obsessed widow from Singapore who tries to find new purpose in life and instead ends up getting lost in Korea. The script was co-written by He and Kris Ong.

” ‘Ajoomma’ very nicely touches upon a phenomenon that has been taking place across Asia for over a decade – the fascination of middle-aged women across the region with South Korean culture and media,” Chen told Variety. “Now K-drama and culture has literally exploded all over the world.”

“Ajoomma” filmed principally in Seoul, Korea, at the beginning of the year and has now completed its final leg of production in Singapore. Post-prod has begun, putting the film on course for a delivery in the autumn.
