The Star Wars saga is pretty perfect just the way it is, and perhaps no die-hard fan would argue otherwise. But what if things didn’t end the way they did? What if some characters faced wildly different ends than what was originally penned down for them, like Anakin Skywalker, for instance? Well, one game on the lore seems to set that perfect alternate ending for Darth Vader.
The Star Wars Universe.
This game is none other than the Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith video game, which quite literally has an alternate point of view to Anakin’s fate at the end of this story. As opposed to the one seen in the movies, this one sees Vader go full-blown evil and kill Obi-Wan Kenobi instead of letting him leave him on the lava shore, and fans just seem to love it.

The storied bromance between Barack Obama and Joe Biden reached new heights last week when 44 tweeted a happy-birthday message to his veep in meme form. It’ll soon get even more serious courtesy of “Barry & Joe: The Animated Series,” a new show in development that counts Conan O’Brien among its executive producers.

If we were to travel back in time to 1984 and quote the great Bonnie Tyler, we need a hero. He’s gotta be strong, he’s gotta be fast, and he’s gotta be fresh from the fight. We had a double whammy with Barack Obama and Joe Biden, and we’ve been mourning their disappearance since before they left office. Enter animator Adam Reid, who is raising money on Kickstarter to make “Barry and Joe,” a sci-fi buddy comedy starring the former president and VP as time-traveling duo tasked with changing the course of history.
In the snappy campaign video, Reid describes “Barry and Joe” as “an adult, animated sci-fi sitcom.” Throwing another beloved figure into the mix, Neil deGrasse Tyson will guide our heroes through the particulars of messing with the spacetime continuum. “Every episode will follow Barack and Joe as they leap into the past and change a part of history.

Writer/director Adam Reid really misses Barack Obama and Joe Biden, so much so that he’s turned to Kickstarter to raise funds to make a pilot for an animated series that turns the former President and Vice President into a time-traveling, crime-fighting duo. Titled “Barry & Joe: The Animated Series” and sporting the tagline “Hope Is On the Way,” the project is looking for $100,000 for “storyboards, recording, animation and sound design” on a prologue and pilot that will be made as proof of concept. According to the Kickstarter page, the pilot will show Obama and Biden being taken to a secret facility.

Ratings (out of five): ****
Loneliness is not the easiest quality to capture on film, at least not without boring us by offering up the usual visual clichés of the figure, alone in a landscape, or within but separated somehow from the world around him/her. Loneliness when you're with other people is a harder thing to pinpoint, and one of the treats of the new film Hello Lonesome is that its writer/ director Adam Reid manages this odd and tricky task very well.

"Filmmaking is a terrible business, but one of the greatest hobbies ever," says director Adam Reid, Independent Spirit Award nominee for his film "Hello Lonesome." Reid's film is a collection of three interwoven short stories about the desire to love and be loved. Reid got his start in filmmaking when, after years struggling as a "terrible" actor in Los Angeles, he took a job producing promos for Comedy Central in New York. While he doesn't enjoy the business aspect of making movies, Reid hopes to make 30 more films. But in the meantime, Reid is preparing for his new role as a father. What's it about? It’s about a bunch of characters looking for a spark of true connection wherever they can find it. Reid says: "I tell everyone we made 'Hello Lonesome' for $50,000, which is true. What I always forget to tell people is that I don...

It's an award-based morning as not only were the Gotham Awards handed out last night, the New York Film Critics are in the middle of handing out their awards right now (that list is coming shortly) and now the nominations for Film Independent's 2012 Independent Spirit Awards were announced as Michael Hazanavicius' The Artist and Jeff Nichols' Take Shelter led the pack with five nominations each. The two leaders, however, were followed closely by Beginners, The Descendants, Martha Marcy May Marlene and Drive with four. Of those six, only Martha Marcy May Marlene wasn't nominated for Best Feature as it was replaced by 50/50, which ended up with three nominations. Of the films nominated for Best Feature, my gut tells me it's a battle between The Artist and The Descendants and this just may end up being the first sign as to which of those two may end up being the Oscar favorite.

Aside from being set in the general NYC tri-state area, the three interlocking, though not intersecting, stories that make up Hello Lonesome have little in common besides loneliness. And it’s a deliberately commonplace kind of loneliness. In his feature debut, writer-director-cinematographer Adam Reid follows a trio of protagonists who aren’t outcasts, hermits, or particularly socially deficient. They haven’t retreated from human contact, but their closest relationships have slipped away for various reasons, and they’re in a position where they’re going to have to reach out if they want or need people in their lives. One ...

If you read my Day 1 post, you will probably guess that Day 2 of the Austin Film Festival started off a wee bit fuzzy. I found my way to the Austin Convention Center for the screening of Adam Reid’s Hello Lonesome and despite my slight queasiness and minor sense of disorientation -- thanks to Dos Equis and my lack of inhibition when it comes to free beer -- I still enjoyed Hello Lonesome. I suspect that it is going to be a tough review to write, especially without revealing my favorite part of the film -- the ending. For now, I will just say that Hello Lonesome was like a Todd Solondz film but with nicer characters. I got right back in line for S&M Lawn Care -- which I have already seen and reviewed but I really wanted to experience with an audience. S&M Lawn Care is...

Hello Lonesome is a finely tuned film about loneliness and the need to connect. It's a nice blend of quirky and profound, somber and hopeful. Writer/director Adam Reid talked about how this movie was a passion project at the L.A. Film Fest and it's safe to say his passion translated well on screen. Hello Lonesome is packed with a solid ensemble cast and some nice cinematography.
With an enchanting mixture of laughter and longing, the worlds of six flawed yet endearing individuals are woven together as they explore those age-old human desires: to love and be loved.

Writer: Adam Reid
Director: Adam Reid
Cast: Sabrina Lloyd, Lynn Cohen, James Urbaniak, Harry Chase, Nate Smith
Writer and director Adam Reid goes the multi-story route with Hello Lonesome, giving us three different (and not visibly linked) tales of people dealing with loneliness. Despite similar themes and feelings, our storylines do not interact. There’s no trickery here – no late reveal that someone is actually someone else’s daughter or that two of our previously unrelated characters used to be involved or anything of that nature. Hello Lonesome is closer to a set of vignettes, three short films that question the same issues. What is loneliness? What is the difference between being alone and being lonely? How do we connect with other people? Is there inherent value to being alone (or even to being lonely)?

In 1999, if you'd asked me to name the cutest woman alive (the pre-Felicia Day, if you will), I'd have probably nominated Sabrina Lloyd, in large part because of the white-men's button down episode of "Sports Night," the episode where Aaron Sorkin got deep into the recesses of every male fantasy and properly identified the outfit more alluring than any lingerie. It was that men's white button down, as I recall, that brought Jeremy and Natalie back together.
I haven't seen Lloyd since her stint on "Ed" some seven years ago (she also had a lengthy arc on "Numb3rs"), so it's good to see her in the very whimsiquirkilicious trailer for Hello Lonesome from the virtually unknown writer/director Adam Reid. I don't know much about the flick, except that it's being screened at the La Film Festival (if you're out there, you can catch up tomorrow and Wednesday nights). Hopefully,...

Playing at the La Film Festival this week is writer/director Adam Reid’s Hello Lonesome and the attached trailer and poster are worth the post on their own.
And there’s an excellent chance we here in the UK will only get to see this one on DVD there’s no harm in helping what looks to be another charming indie look at love and life in the suburban heartlands.
Before you click on the trailer take a look at the opening credits from director Adam Reid’s vimeo site, and see the tilt shift goodness on offer.

One of the films opening the La Film Festival, which started last night, is Hello Lonesome, a low-key indie romance and debut feature from Adam Reid. (He's the guy who directed the trailer for the book Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, oddly enough.) The film follows three odd-couple pairings with what looks like an appropriate, if very 'indie' combination of sensitivity and humor. There's now a great poster for the film, complementing the trailer that was released not long ago. Film School Rejects premiered the poster earlier this week, and highlighted the trailer as well. I love the poster to death -- you can see it in full below. The idea of miniatures is seen explored in part in the trailer, where one of the characters is emerging from a tiny house. I don't know to what degree that is anything more than a cute visual motif, but I'm intrigued. The...

The 2010 Los Angeles Film Festival is set to run June 17-27 in a brand new location. Oh, it’s still in L.A, but it’s moving across town, from Westwood — where it’s been held the past few years — all the way over to Downtown.
The main “hub” for the fest will be the new L.A. Live complex, but there will also be screenings at other locations, such as the Downtown Independent and Redcat theaters. The city is really trying to build downtown up into a major arts and culture hub, so the festival moving there fits in with that agenda. Film Independent, the organization that runs Laff, also runs the annual Independent Spirit Awards, an event that also moved downtown — from Santa Monica — this year.
On Bad Lit, I tend to like to put up festival lineups that include days and times of screenings. However, since I...

Like the headline says, the complete lineup for the 2010 Los Angeles Film Festival has been announced and it's a fascinating, eclectic mix. How happy am I to see music doc Separado! in there? Pretty damn happy, as it's one of my absolute favorites of the year and has been resoundingly overlooked. Read the complete announcement below!

What, you didn’t know they did trailers for honest to goodness books now? Well they do. Check out this very entertaining little trailer for Seth Grahame-Smith’s “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” that appeared online last week, written and directed by Adam Reid. Just in time, too, because the book hits stores tomorrow, March 2, 2010. Indiana, 1818. Moonlight falls through the dense woods that surround a one-room cabin, where a nine-year-old Abraham Lincoln kneels at his suffering mother’s bedside. She’s been stricken with something the old-timers call “Milk Sickness.” “My baby boy…” she whispers before dying. Only later will the grieving Abe learn that his mother’s fatal affliction was actually the work of a vampire. When the truth becomes known to young Lincoln, he writes in his journal, “henceforth my life shall be one of rigorous study and devotion. I shall become a master of mind and body.
