After parting ways with co-president of entertainment Jana Winograde and shifting two-decade Showtime veteran Gary Levine to an advisory role, McCarthy has turned to his top lieutenants at MTV Studios, Nina L. Diaz and Keith Cox, to take on more prominent leadership roles at the premium cable network. The moves are part of a greater integration between McCarthy’s MTV Entertainment Studios with Showtime and come ahead of the cabler’s rebranding and consolidation with Paramount+.
As part of McCarthy’s new structure, outlined in detail via a memo to staff (read it below), COO and CFO Michael Crotty, exec vp nonfiction Vinnie Malhotra, exec vp and general counsel Rob Rosenberg, and vp and entertainment counsel Kent Sevener have joined Jana Winograde in leaving the network. Additional layoffs are expected to come following the major restructuring.

“Bar Rescue,” the bar makeover show born just a handful of years after the Great Recession, is now entering its eighth season — and hitting a milestone 200th episode — as a battered hospitality business once again attempts to emerge from another economic downturn, this time caused by the devastating Covid-19 pandemic.
Host and executive producer Jon Taffer says to expect the upcoming season on Paramount Network to be an emotional one — “more emotional than any other we’ve done in the past because these people aren’t failures. These are people who are running successful businesses and the pandemic or Mother Nature, if you will, took their businesses away from them. It’s reminiscent of the hurricane episodes that we’ve done over the years, where the owners weren’t failures, but circumstance put them in that situation.”

Viacom’s cable portfolio was once a shining example to the rest of the industry, but the company has been struggling to revitalize its most important brands for years. With the merger between Viacom and CBS now officially underway, the health of those brands is more important than ever.
When Bob Bakish took over as president and CEO in late 2016, he specifically called out six core networks — MTV, Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., Comedy Central, Bet and Paramount Network — as the keys to Viacom’s success. Since then, Viacom has reorganized its executive ranks and laid off employees across numerous brands as it attempts to lure viewers and streamline for the digital age.
Among the more significant of these moves: In May 2018, Debra Lee stepped down as the head of Bet after more than a decade at the helm of the African-American focused cabler; In October of that same year, longtime Viacom...

Eddie Dalva is ending his 33-year run at Viacom, stepping down from his post as Evp Content and Program Enterprises and Bellator Mma.
The news was shared internally by Kevin Kay, president of the Paramount Network, Cmt and TV Land. Dalva will not be replaced, and his duties will be absorbed by the Viacom workforce.
Dalva’s accomplishments included working on the team that launched Ha!, the network that eventually became Comedy Central, as well as rebranding Cmt after Viacom acquired the network. More recently, he had worked on ramping up Bellator, which in June set a nine-figure distribution deal with international streaming service Dazn.
Here is Kay’s email to the Paramount Network staff:

Viacom’s answer to Ufc – the solidly rated Bellator Fighting Championships circuit – has set a new deal with international streaming service Dazn.
Described as a nine-figure transaction, the new deal will see 15 fights simulcast on Viacom’s Paramount Network as well as on Dazn. Seven more exclusive cards a year will be created just for Dazn, which streams sporting events in Germany, Austria, Japan and other countries. Dazn plans to launch in the U.S. in September.
The partnership “speaks to the incredible growth of Bellator into a global sports powerhouse and highly valued franchise in the Viacom portfolio,” said Kevin Kay, president of Paramount Network, TV Land and Cmt.
Bellator president Scott Coker called it a “game-changer,” an investment that will “enable us to continue expanding our roster with free agents who make sense.” Dazn chief James Rushton said that between Bellator and a recently announced plan to stream 30 nights a year of boxing,...

Paramount Network’s first two big event series, “Waco” and “Yellowstone,” take place in the center of the country — and that’s not by accident. The newly rebranded channel, which flipped from its longtime identity as Spike today, may now sport the name of a big Hollywood studio. But its roots still lie in Nashville.
That’s what helped fuel a desire to make Paramount a premium basic cable network that perhaps appeals as much to the middle of the country as the coasts, which network president Kevin Kay said he hoped might set it apart from established competitors like FX and AMC. “Waco,” which premieres Jan. 24, stars Michael Shannon, Taylor Kitsch, John Leguizamo, Rory Culkin, Melissa Benoist, and Camryn Manheim, and tells the story of the real-life 1993 standoff between cult leader David Koresh and the FBI and Atf.
“Yellowstone,” meanwhile, stars Kevin Costner as the nation’s largest ranch owner.

The Shannara Chronicles will be non-existent when Spike officially becomes Paramount Network on January 18.

"We have officially passed on making any more," Kay revealed.
"Maybe [Sonar Entertainment] is going to take it somewhere else. For us, we passed on the future of that."
Ever since The Shannara Chronicles debuted back in January 2016, it has not had the best treatment.
It emerged as a hit for MTV when it debuted and emerged as the highest-rated and most-watched scripted series of the year for the network.
It was swiftly renewed in April of that year for Season 2, and all seemed right in the world.
However, a whole year passed, and there was no mention of the series, and many wondered whether the series had actually entered production again.

Spike TV is about to rebrand to the Paramount Network, and in the process it's leaving some shows behind. The Shannara Chronicles will be one of those shows, Paramount Network President Kevin Kay revealed at the Television Critics Association winter press tour this week.
"Maybe (production company Sonar Entertainment) is going to take it somewhere else,” Kay told TVGuide.com. “For us, we passed on the future of that.”
Sonar Entertainment is indeed shopping season 3 of the show to other networks and streaming services, and it's worth noting that The Shannara Chronicles has survived a network change already before - switching from MTV to Spike TV between its first and second seasons. Still, this cancellation seems like it will stick, given the show's poor ratings.

A few months prior to its first and only season debut, Kevin Kay, president of Paramount Network, TV Land and Cmt said the new TV series had "potential," and that they would renew it for season two, if the first season found "success" on Spike. Airing on the Spike cable channel, The Mist stars Morgan Spector, Alyssa Sutherland, Gus Birney, Danica Curcic, Okezie Morro, Luke Cosgrove, Darren Pettie, Russell Posner, Dan Butler, Isiah Whitlock Jr., and Frances Conroy. Paramount Network has greenlighted its first scripted series. Viacom’s new general entertainment network and leading scripted brand, which will replace Spike in early 2018, has given a 10-episode straight-to-series order to Yellowstone, a sweeping, cinematic family drama written and directed by Oscar-nominated Hell or High Water and Sicario screenwriter Taylor Sheridan and executive produced by The Weinstein Company and John and Art Linson, former executive producers of FX’s Sons Of Anarchy, in which Sheridan co-starred.
Paramount Network, designated as one Viacom’s six core networks, will launch at the beginning of 2018 with an inaugural slate, which includes two new scripted series originally developed, piloted and ordered to series at sibling TV Land, comedies American Woman and Heathers, and Spike’s Waco miniseries, also from The Weinstein Co.
