The Supreme Court decided on Wednesday that writing checks to politicians as thank-you payments for corrupt contracting decisions does not constitute bribery under federal law. The vote was 6 to 3, with the three liberal justices — Ketanji Brown Jackson, Sonia Sotomayor, and Elena Kagan — dissenting.
“State and local governments often regulate the gifts that state and local officials may accept,” Justice Brett Kavanaugh wrote on behalf of the majority. The law in question, he went on, “does not supplement those state and local rules by subjecting 19 million state and local officials to...

Following rounds 1 and 2, this one will take us right on through the countdown to Halloween and will surely be the most actively updated of the bunch. Best to begin, then, by grounding it in a classic, so we turn to David Kalat: "Frankenstein isn't a science fiction story about an arrogant scientist who intrudes on God's domain, it's a metaphor about our relationship to God." That's his argument, and I'll let him explain, but I want to pull back to a couple of earlier sentences in his piece. Mary Shelley's novel, "and the 1910 film version, treated the 'science' of Frankenstein as just so much folderol, a MacGuffin to introduce the artificial man into the story. Whale was so good at providing a reasonably convincing visualization of reviving the dead — no, more than that, a stunningly satisfying visualization of reviving the dead — it focused popular attention on that part of...

"The finest Western you'll see this year is set in aristocratic 16th-century France, in the heat of Counter-Reformation," declares Nick Pinkerton. Segueing into his interview with Bertrand Tavernier, Aaron Hillis, also in the Voice, sums up the gist of The Princess of Montpensier: "Adapted from Madame de la Fayette's classic novel, the film concerns a nubile, wealthy heiress (Mélanie Thierry) who loves a rugged hothead from the wrong clan (Gaspard Ulliel), but is forced by her father to marry another prince (Grégoire Leprince-Ringuet), leaving her to dwell on the too-modern desire for free will — defiantly bucking against the rigid traditions of her breed." Back to Pinkerton: "The setting always serves the performers rather than vice versa — though the film is also greatly enhanced by the costuming, the rugged French countryside photographed in outdoor-adventure CinemaScope, and Philippe Sarde's baroque-tribal score, its martial and romantic poles matching a tale of...

Greg (Eric Szmanda) along with Hodges (Wallace Langham) and Mandy (Sheeri Rappaport) look at a photo of a girl on the web whom Greg states is a Db. saying: "She is not merely dead, she is most sincerely dead." (from The Wizard of Oz..) Nick (George Eads) asks if they're having a slow night and disagrees with Greg telling him everything on the website isn't real. Hodges explains he was trying to tell the others that. Nick proceeds to examine the photo and remarks on her blood vessels in her arm being distended meaning she has high blood pressure. Greg thinks the blood pooled in dexterity and lividity, i.e that she's dead. Hodges comments it's hard to tell without a body. Nick believes it's a waste of time and so he and Greg bet each other $100 on whether she's alive or not; which Nick doesn't even think Greg has.

"My favorite film of the last two years, Hong Sang-soo's Bam gua nat (Night and Day), is getting a one-week run at Anthology Film Archives, starting this Friday," announces Dan Sallitt, and for more raves (well, mostly), you can turn to Richard Brody (New Yorker), Scott Foundas (Voice), Andrew Schenker (L) and Keith Uhlich (Time Out New York). Update, 10/23: More from Jeannette Catsoulis (New York Times), Michael Joshua Rowin (Reverse Shot) and S James Snyder (Artforum).
This is just one of several extraordinary runs going on in NYC over the next while, starting this evening at Film Forum, where, with what the Voice's J Hoberman calls the "cine-essay-cum-illustrated-lecture Rembrandt's J'accuse," Peter Greenaway "uncovers a foul, lurid, corrupt, and perversely compelling conspiracy - which is to say, he successfully turns The Night Watch into a Peter Greenaway film." More from Manohla Dargis (New York Times), David Fear (Tony), Nicolas Rapold...

Over the July 4th weekend I finally saw Werner Herzog's much praised 2005 doc Grizzly Man and while I was watching I couldn't help but think about how amazing it would have been had Herzog been given the chance to put together a camping trip with Grizzly Man protagonist Timothy Treadwell and the famed Herzog collaborator Klaus Kinski. I don't think Kinski would have been afraid of a grizzly bear and I have a good feeling he may have eaten Treadwell before the grizzlies ever had a chance to all while yelling obscenities at Treadwell's pet fox. Both men were (and still are) eternally fascinating and deserving of Herzog's eye as it didn't take me long to realize why Treadwell's story fascinated Herzog to the point of piecing together 90 minutes of Treadwell's amateur footage into a feature-length doc and it was worth every minute. Bringing this little story back to the headline,...

Writer of 2007s "Flawless," Edward Anderson sits in the director's chair for the first time in horror film "Shuttle," a 2008 SXSW movie entry, which is now pushing forward with an April 7, 2009 DVD release date. Light on scares or gore "Shuttle," utilizes a character reveal at midpoint to add a twist where one is usually found in the ending and an intensity chills throughout. Not bowing to conventional story development Anderson finds his stride in this 106 minute tightly written thriller.

There are some bumps in the road on the trip Shuttle takes, but as on any good vacation, the destination is worth the problems getting there. Actually, the Mexican jaunt enjoyed by the film’s two young heroines is over as the movie begins, and what should be their simple trip home becomes an uneven but ultimately gripping nightmare.
In Shuttle (being given an unfortunately token theatrical release in a handful of cities this month by Truly Indie ahead of its April DVDebut via Magnolia Pictures), the trouble has already started for longtime best friends Mel (Peyton List) and Jules (Cameron Goodman) once their plane has touched down; Mel is suffering air sickness, and they’re held up in the terminal when one of their bags goes missing. They wind up being among the last people left there on the rainy night, along with Seth (James Snyder), a constant on-the-maker...

Genre director Tom Holland knows his way around a scary story. A veteran of ’80s horror, he has written quality cult classics like Class Of 1984 and The Beast Within, as well as the better-than-it-should-have-been Psycho II.
He also guided the infamous Chucky, in the first Child’S Play movie and created one of the smoothest vampires to ever grace the screen, Jerry Dandridge of Fright Night. And the filmmaker is staying as relevant as can be these days, embracing the opportunities opened up by the Internet. He recently recorded on-line-exclusive commentaries for Child’S Play and Fright Night to fill in the gaps on the existing DVDs, and teamed with Strike.TV to write and direct 5 Or Die, a web horror show about a lethal electronic chain letter that recipients must pass on in five minutes to avoid being brutally killed. You can watch the first installment (which contains some non-work-safe language) below.
