Heading into the second season of “Accused,” series developer Howard Gordon and showrunner Daniel Pearle didn’t have a clear overarching theme in mind. What they had instead was a goal.

“Honestly, we just wanted to be better,” Gordon told TheWrap. “We’re testing the limits.”

That’s a tall order considering the fact that “Accused” is already a difficult feat of television. Each episode of the anthology series plays out like its own little mystery, following someone else who’s on trial. Through a series of flashbacks that play out over the course of the episode, the audience slowly learns why they’re in the courtroom before the series ultimately reveals their crimes and sentencing. Exclusive: Sonequa Martin-Green, Mike Colter, Jamie Chung, Sherri Saum, and Kiara Barnes have joined Season 2 of Fox’s crime procedural Accused.

Martin-Green and Colter will lead the finale, titled “Megan’s Story,” as Megan and John, respectively. Barnes play Eve in the same episode, in which a music executive’s marriage to her husband is threatened by a beautiful seductress.

Chung will play the character Grace in “Eugene’s Story,” and Saum will play the character Erica in “Justin’s Story.”

In “Eugene’s Story,” a kind-hearted jewelry store owner is put on trial after his wife’s past throws their present into chaos. “Justin’s Story” sees a wrestling coach is on trial after he pushes his star wrestler too far.

The new cast joins some heavy hitters who have already been announced for Season 2, including Felicity Huffman, Taylor Schilling, Patrick J. Adams, William H. Macy, Justin Chambers, Danny Pino and Nick Cannon.

The trail has gone cold on a Cold Case reboot, which is no longer in the works at CBS.

According to our sister site Deadline, the Eye Network is not moving forward with a new iteration of its 2003-2010 crime procedural, which was reportedly in the works as of this past April.

Fox has added several new faces to Season 2 of Howard Gordon’s Accused. Cobie Smulders, Vella Lovell, Dina Shihabi and Isabel Arraiza will join the upcoming installment of the crime anthology series.

They join some heavy hitters who have already been announced for Season 2, including Felicity Huffman, Taylor Schilling, Patrick J. Adams, William H. Macy, Justin Chambers, Danny Pino and Nick Cannon. Michael Chiklis is also returning in front of and behind the camera, after starring in the premiere and directing a later episode in Season 1.

Fox has pushed the season 2 premiere of anthology crime series Accused to Tuesday, October 8 from its original October 1 date due to the recently scheduled vice presidential debate between Governor Tim Walz (D-mn) and Sen. J.D. Vance (R-oh), hosted by CBS News.

The season 2 premiere will air at 8 pm on October 8, followed by Murder in a Small Town. The second episode of Murder in a Small Town will still air on October 1, but now at 8 pm, followed by the debate, the network said Friday.

“We like crime shows, at least some of us do,” writer and producer Chris Brancato told IndieWire. “We like gangster shows. We like watching people do the things that we would never do ourselves. And yet, they’ve all been done a million times.”

His own oeuvre seems to support that — but only at first glance. The creator of “Narcos,” “Godfather of Harlem,” and now MGM+’s “Hotel Cocaine” would seem to have found a very buzzy (buzzed?) niche for himself as the prestige crime saga guy. But there’s more going on than just blow.

With “Narcos,” Brancato insisted to Netflix that the actors speak in Spanish, just as the real-life characters did. And “Godfather of Harlem” opened itself up to him once he discovered that Malcolm X was friends with crime boss Bumpy Johnson. Hotel Cocaine follows Danny Pino as Roman Compte, the manager of The Mutiny Club, nestled inside The Mutiny Hotel. Roman has worked diligently within the framework of drug traffickers and celebrities, staying steadfastly outside of his brother’s business.

“Colorful, intriguing, dangerous,” is how Danny Pino describes the world of Roman Compte, the real-life Cuban exile and general manager of Miami’s Mutiny Hotel and its glitzy nightclub, ground zero for the disco era’s cocaine scene. In the fictionalized eight-part drama, Hotel Cocaine, created by Chris Brancato (Godfather of Harlem), DEA agent Zulio (Michael Chiklis) pressures Compte to rat on his drug kingpin brother Nestor Cabal (Yul Vazquez) by threatening to disrupt the life of Roman’s teenage daughter Valeria (Corina Bradley). Pinewood Studios has sold its minority stake in the Dominican Republic’s horizon water tank facility, which has been renamed Lantica Studios after its now sole owner, Lantica Media.

Formerly known as the Pinewood Dominican Republic Studios, Lantica Studios is undertaking the building of a fourth soundstage, measuring 16,000 sq.ft., and two additional workshop spaces of 12,000 sq. ft each, mainly dedicated to housing camera, grip and electric equipment vendors. These are set to open by the Spring of 2025.

The landmark expansion comes as the 10-year-old studio has seen record growth in international and local production, which has led to the availability of more skilled crew in the Dominican Republic (Dr), either trained on the job or in regularly held workshops. “We’ve grown from hiring locals at an average rate of 400 – 500 a year to 2,000 a year,” said Albert Martinez, CEO of Lantica Studios.

MGM+ has released the official trailer and key art for the crime thriller Hotel Cocaine, which was executive produced by Chris Brancato and Guillermo Navarro (Pan’s Labyrinth).

The 2024 Atx TV Festival will close out its 13th season with a celebration of TV icon Norman Lear, Variety can exclusively announce.

“Norman Lear’s TV for the People: Script Reading and Conversation” will honor the legendary television producer and activist, who died in December 2023, with a night of comedy and conversation. There will be two live script readings — one of the groundbreaking abortion episode from “Maude” and the second of a classic episode from “Good Times.” Guest actors will read for each role, including Katey Sagal (in the role of “Maude”), Phil Rosenthal (in the role of “Walter Findlay”), Danny Pino (in the role of “Dr. Arthur Harmon”), Dulé Hill (in the role of “James Evans Sr.”).

The script readings will be followed by a conversation with Lear’s former collaborators and friends discussing his approach to TV and his ability to use the sitcom format to have important conversations.

Cold Case may be returning to CBS. The network is considering a reboot of the police procedural drama created by Meredith Stiehm. The original series aired on CBS for seven seasons before it was cancelled in 2010.

Kathryn Morris, Justin Chambers, Thom Barry, John Finn, Jeremy Ratchford, Danny Pino, Sarah Brown, and Tracie Thoms star in the original Cold Case series. The story follows Philadelphia Police Detective Lilly Rush (Morris) and her team as they work to solve investigations that are no longer being actively pursued by the department.

CBS is looking to reopen Cold Case. A reboot of the crime procedural, which aired for seven seasons from 2003 to 2010, is currently in development at the Eye Network, our sister site Deadline reports.

Fifteen years after the original series ended, this new iteration would follow an entirely different group of detectives dedicated to investigating unsolved crimes. Though additional details are being kept under wraps, one confirmed change from the original series is its setting; the reboot would take place in the Southwest, whereas the original was set in Philadelphia.

Exclusive: After bringing back CSI: Crime Scene Investigation with CSI: Vegas, CBS is looking to revive another Jerry Bruckheimer Television-produced crime procedural from the 2000s. The network is in negotiations with Warner Bros. TV for a reboot of Cold Case, which aired on CBS for seven seasons from 2003-2010, Deadline has learned. The followup comes from the series’ creator/executive producer Meredith Stiehm.

Set 15 years after the original series’ final episode, the untitled Cold Case reboot would follow a new team of tenacious detectives who investigate cold cases across the Southwest.

This is a new location as the original Cold Case was set in Philadelphia. The move would allow the potential new series to introduce a new group of characters as they tackle unsolved homicides.

Exclusive: Australian streamer Stan will bring Hotel Cocaine to its subscribers at the same time as the show launches in the U.S. having boarded the series. The show hails from Chris Brancato, creator of Narcos and Godfather of Harlem, who has described his new drama as “Casablanca on cocaine.”

In the U.S. it will be on MGM+ and bow on June 16. In Australia the Stan Original launches immediately after the U.S., but given the timezone shift that means it will debut on June 17.

It is produced by MGM+ Studios, in association with Stan.

Exclusive: Atx TV Festival is expanding its 2024 programming.

The lineup will now feature several screenings and conversations from series including Industry Season 3, Pretty Little Liars: Summer School, and Fargo. Other events will incorporate shows like Girls5eva into the programming as well.

HBO and Max are planning several panels. Fantasmas, which premieres this summer, has set its world premiere at Atx, followed by a conversation with creator, star, and director Julio Torres.

Industry Season 3 will also debut at the festival, followed by a conversation with creators Mickey Down and Konrad Kay, as well as star Myha’la Herrold. Additional cast is likely to be announced soon. Season 3 is set to stream on Max in 2024, though a premiere date has not been set.
