Richard Tandy, the keyboardist for the British rock band Electric Light Orchestra, had died. He was 76.
Jeff Lynne, the band’s frontman and leader, announced his death on social media Wednesday, writing, “It is with great sadness that I share the news of the passing of my long-time collaborator and dear friend Richard Tandy. He was a remarkable musician & friend and I’ll cherish the lifetime of memories we had together. Sending all my love to Sheila & the Tandy family.”
Tandy’s cause of death was not immediately available.
Born on March 26, 1948, in Birmingham, England, Tandy first joined Elo following the release of the band’s first album in 1972. He started by playing bass guitar but eventually transitioned to the keyboard after another band member exited.
Tandy was also among the three core members, including Lynne and Bev Bevan, who stayed with the rock band until it disbanded in 1986.

Dubbed “The Over and Out Tour,” the 27-date outing kicks off in Palm Desert, CA on August 19th. Shows are scheduled in Seattle, Vancouver, San Francisco, Toronto, New York, Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Nashville, Atlanta, Houston, Dallas, and Phoenix, before the tour concludes in Los Angeles on October 25th. Denny Laine, co-founder of Wings and The Moody Blues, has died at the age of 79 after a lengthy battle with interstitial lung disease.
Laine’s wife, Elizabeth Hines, announced the news via Facebook on Tuesday, December 5th. “My darling husband passed away peacefully early this morning. I was at his bedside, holding his hand as I played his favorite Christmas songs for him,” she wrote. “He’s been singing Christmas songs the past few weeks and I continued to play Christmas songs while he’s been in ICU on a ventilator this past week.”
Hines continued, “He and I both believed he would overcome his health setbacks and return to the rehabilitation center and eventually home. Unfortunately, his lung disease, Interstitial Lung Disease (Ild), is unpredictable and aggressive; each infection weakened and damaged his lungs.” See the full statement below.

Tony Iommi made a surprise appearance during the premiere performance of a new Black Sabbath ballet Saturday night (September 23rd) at The Hippodrome Theatre in the band’s hometown of Birmingham, United Kingdom.
The ballet was commissioned by Birmingham Royal Ballet’s director Carlos Acosta and Ballet Now, and features eight re-orchestrated renditions of iconic Black Sabbath songs, as well as new compositions inspired by the heavy metal pioneers.
Iommi had been present for some of rehearsals for the ballet and made his cameo during the final number, playing guitar on “Paranoid.” The guitarist then took a bow with the cast and crew at the conclusion of the performance.
