At times Bosnia and Herzegovina has looked like it was stuck in a bit of a no-man’s land when it comes to film production, lacking the financial fire-power to press forward, but its TV series business is booming.
The Southeast European country boasts two Oscar nominations – Danis Tanović’s “No Man’s Land,” which nabbed a statuette in 2002, and Jasmila Žbanić’s “Quo Vadis, Aida?,” which was nominated in 2021 – and its filmmakers have enjoyed success on the festival circuit, but it still hasn’t upped its meagre level of production, especially in terms of fiction features, with only one or two majority Bosnian films produced a year.

Croatian writer-director Juraj Lerotić’s “Safe Place,” an emotional story of a family reeling in the wake of a suicide attempt, took the top prize at the Sarajevo Film Festival, which wrapped a record-setting 2022 edition in the Bosnian capital on Friday night.
The Heart of Sarajevo Award for best feature film was given by a jury headed by Austrian filmmaker Sebastian Meise (“The Great Freedom”), which included French filmmaker Lucile Hadžihalilović (“Earwig”), Croatian writer-director Antoneta Alamat Kusijanović (“Murina”), Serbian actor Milan Marić (“Dovlatov”) and Israeli producer and consultant Katriel Schory.

The long shadow of the war and its ravages continue to haunt a group of late middle-aged Sarajevan friends in the low-budget, tonally uneven dramedy “May Labor Day” from Bosnian multi-hyphenate Pjer Žalica. Although the material is both a little thin and a tad familiar, the script ticks off a range of contemporary social problems and issues such as the brain drain to Europe of the educated younger generation, junkie no-hopers who get clean through faith, the orphan kids kept off the street through charitable ventures and the nagging dissatisfaction felt by the ordinary men who fought for their country, but feel that it has lost its way.
Serving as the closing night attraction of this year’s Sarajevo Film Festival, “May Labor Day” is a co-production of all the territories of former Yugoslavia and features an ensemble of the region’s best-known actors, who appear to take great pleasure in performing together.

“We had a great opening film — Triangle of Sadness by Ruben Östlund — and we have a great closing film — May Labour Day by the Bosnian director Pjer Žalica, who’s one of the most beloved local filmmakers — so it’s going to be an emotional end to the festival,” says Marjanović who took over from Mirsad Purivatra, the festival’s original founder who started the festival in 1995 during the siege of Sarajevo in the Bosnian War.
Marjanović joined the Sff team in 1999, straight after high school, and started the top job after two years running the festival’s industry section and two years serving as Sff co-director alongside Purivatra. From the start, the Sff staked out its claim to be the premier festival for cinema from Southeastern Europe.

Jovan Marjanović has been with the Sarajevo Film Festival for more than two decades and while he is what he describes as “a true child of the festival” this year marks the first edition where he’ll sit as director of the much-loved Balkan event, taking the reins from founder and long-time director Mirsad Purivatra.
“We owe Mirsad so much, but he’s very much still involved – there was no avoiding that,” quips Marjanović of the much-loved Purivatra, who has recently launched boutique Croatian event Ponta Lopud Film Festival. “He’s a remarkable leader and we will all miss him as our leader. I hope I’ve learned enough from him to continue where he stopped.”

The world premiere of Pjer Žalica’s comedy drama Focus, Grandma will open the Sarajevo Film Festival in Bosnia-Herzegovina on August 14.
It marks the third time a film by Sarajevo-born Žalica has opened the festival after Fuse in 2003 and Days And Hours in 2004. Focus, Grandma was shot in the Bosnia and Herzegovinian capital in November last year. Fuse won the Silver Leopard at Locarno, best first feature at Sarajevo and the Golden Star at Marrakech in 2003.

The 13th Zagreb Film Festival (Nov 14-22) saw Lászlo Nemes’ Cannes Grand Prix winner Son of Saul win the main prize, the Golden Pram for best feature film and a cash prize of €4,000.
The holocaust drama beat 12 other first or second films by their directors, including Icelandic duo Rams and Sparrows, indie hit Me Earl And The Dying Girl, Czech offerings Family Film and Home Care, and Venezuela’s Venice winner From Afar.
The jury, comprising directors Levan Koguashvili and Jessica Woodworth, and producer Christoph Thoke, said of the winner: ”It’s shattering. It’s a masterpiece. It’s unforgettable. A physical experience. An extraordinary film.”

Ciné-Sud has two films selected for Toronto: the Iranian feature “ Red Rose” (handled internationally by Udi – Urban Distribution International) and the Vietnam-France-Norway-Germany co-production “Flapping in the Middle of Nowhere” by Nguyen Hoang Diep which will premiere September 1st, 2nd and 3rd in Venice/ Critics Week before moving to Toronto And with no international sales agent to date.
In Locarno, "Los ausentes" (“The Absent Ones) by Nicolas Pereda, a Mèxico-Spain-France coproduction is screening out of competition on August 11! The international sales agent is Caravan Pass, a former production company formed in 2005 in Paris by Natalie Dana. In 2014 founder Natalie and industry celeb-acquisitions persona, Elizabeth Dreyer, turned the company to international sales as well. They are actively seeking completed/ unlaunched films and projects at the financing stage.
Natalie Dana worked in sales at some of the industry’s most recognizable sales agencies, including Mercure and Celluloid Dreams. She also headed distribution for various film distributors and selected films for the prestigious Rio de Janeiro International Film Festival for five years. Under her guidance, Caravan Pass has produced or co-produced four feature films and two documentaries, partnering with notable production companies in several countries including Brazil and Italy.
Elizabeth Dreyer began her career in acquisitions, acquiring completed films and projects for North America for Miramax Films and Focus Features. As an independent consultant she has since sourced and sold remakes to international producers, advised renowned distributors around the world on pre-buys and completed film pickups, and developed feature films for proven French film producers looking to access the international market. She most recently handled sales and acquisitions for Celluloid Dreams.

Al Jazeera Balkans and Croatian national broadcaster Hrt are negotiating TV rights for Sarajevo Film Festival’s competition films.
Al Jazeera has picked up Danis Tanovic’s An Episode In The Life Of An Iron Picker for the territories of the former Yugoslavia, and Hrt took the film for Croatia.
Hrt is also negotiating acquisition of TV rights for the territory for all the films from Sarajevo Film Festival’s feature competition and most of the films from the documentary selection with running times fitting TV programming slots.
This amounts to a total of nine features and twelve documentaries, including Pjer Zalica’s Slave, Arsen Oremovic’s winner of the Human Rights Award Married To The Swiss Franc, Katherina Mückstein’s Talea and Daniel Hoesl’s Soldate Jeanette, which have already been picked up.

'Fuse' film hot as top winner at Marrakech
MARRAKECH, Morocco -- The black comedy Fuse, by Bosnian director Pjer Zalica, won the Marrakech International Film Festival's top prize, the Golden Star, at a ceremony here Wednesday. Bogdan Diklic also took the best actor award for his performance in the film. Set in postwar Bosnia, Fuse recounts a small town's frantic attempts to paper over the cracks in its ethnic divisions ahead of a visit by President Clinton. The film won the Silver Leopard at Locarno this year before scooping up six awards at the Sarajevo Film Festival. In an awards ceremony at which practically every prize winner had already been recognized by at least one other festival, the Marrakech jury headed by German director Volker Schlondorff gave its Special Jury Prize to Tom McCarthy's The Station Agent. The tale of loneliness and friendship centered around a dwarf drew much acclaim from the Moroccan audience.

'Fuse' ignited as Bosnia's Oscar entry
MOSCOW -- Fuse, a bittersweet ethnic comedy of post-Balkans war follies, has been chosen as Bosnia-Herzegovina's foreign-language Oscar nominee, the country's film workers union said Wednesday. Directed by Pjer Zalica, Fuse won a Silver Leopard earlier this year at the Locarno Film Festival. Bosnia-Herzegovina had success two years ago when Danis Tanovic's No Man's Land won the Oscar in the foreign-language category. Elma Tataragic of Bosnia's Association of Film Workers said that for the first time, the country's Oscar contender had been chosen in a secret ballot of members in Sarajevo's movie theater the Obala Meeting Point. Screenings of the nominated films were organized at the theater with the help of the Sarajevo Film Festival, the union and theater. Fuse is about the uneasy peace that reigns in a mixed village of Serbs and Muslims after the ethnic civil war of the 1990s. Wartime hatred continues to divide the village, but the announcement that President Clinton is to visit sparks a drive to create an appearance of peace and unity.
