Arthur Penn’s Night Moves is one of the great revisionist noirs, taking its place alongside Robert Altman’s The Long Goodbye and Roman Polanski’s Chinatown. Like those films, it not only brazenly subverts the tropes of the classic Hollywood private eye film, but also uses the genre’s pervasive aura of moral corruption and social anomie to comment on the American scene in the wake of political scandals and the collapse of the 1960s counterculture into the rampant self-absorption of the Me Decade. All three films eschew pat resolutions, let alone the comforts of a return to status quo order.
Night Moves cadges elements from classic noir films. It lifts basic plot points about the search for the runaway daughter of a moneyed family from Howard Hawks’s The Big Sleep, and emulates that film’s excessively labyrinthine narrative, though here you probably don’t need to pay...

Harris Yulin is one of the most prolific character actors currently working in film and TV. If you've been watching any television since the 1970s, odds are you've probably seen his face in something. Yet, one of his most memorable roles is also his least recognizable, since his face was buried in make-up. That would be a reference to the "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episode "Duet," where he played a Cardassian named Aamin Maritza.
"Deep Space Nine" is set on Bajor, a world previously occupied by the Cardassian military. The series' primary Bajoran viewpoint comes from Major Kira Nerys (Nana Visitor; read our interview about her "Star Trek" experience here), a former resistance fighter still scarred by her people's years of subjugation. That backstory weighs heavily on "Duet" (written by Peter Allan Fields).

MoMA’s Bulle Ogier retrospective was occasion upon occasion for discovery, and even then it was great fortune to encounter Candy Mountain, a 1987 road picture directed by legendary photographer Robert Frank and screenwriter Rudy Wurlitzer starring Kevin J. O’Connor, Tom Waits, Joe Strummer, and Dr. John, with the legendary French actress in a small, pivotal supporting role. Replete with cold, pale colors and a thoroughly comfortable vibe, it’s also, from the 2024’s vantage, more than a little melancholy for introducing sequestered communities that very likely don’t exist today.

The movies do not deserve Mary Louise Parker. Her work in the New York theater scene since the 1990s has been rightfully praised from Broadway to the Battery, and the serialized nature of television has allowed her to flex character-developing muscles and play the emotional scales several times over; say what you will about those later seasons of Weeds, the Showtime dramedy that cast Parker as a pot-selling suburbanite, but she always managed to throw in a look, an offbeat line reading or a bit of business that provided a nice second-hand high.

Omni Loop presents an intriguing premise. Zoya Lowe (Mary-Louise Parker), a brilliant quantum physicist, finds herself caught in a time loop while a mysterious black hole grows in her chest. Yes, you read that correctly. Zoya also has just one week to live, but the troubled woman already knows that because shes been repeatedly experiencing this very last week of her life for quite some time. In fact, shes lost track of just how many times shes endured her very own Groundhog Day.
In an attempt to survive her dilemma, Zoya leans into these peculiarities, but alas, she cant find a cure for her mysterious predicament and illness until one day, when she meets a gifted student named Paula (the ubiquitous Ayo Edebiri). Teaming up, the duo embarks on saving Zoyas life and unlocking the mysteries of time travel in the process. Several quantum detours filter into the mix in...

When doctors tell Zoya Lowe (Mary-Louise Parker), the quantum physicist at the center of Omni Loop, that she has a black hole growing inside her chest and little time left to live, she seems oddly unfazed. A montage speeds us through the next few days of her life as she’s taken home from the hospital, then to the beach by her family, who surprise her with a candle-covered cake two weeks ahead of her actual birthday, which she likely won’t live to see.
Throughout each of those scenes, Zoya sits in the center of the frame, staring forward with a placid look on her face. It would be fair to assume that hers is a state of shock—the look of a woman who’s unable to process the finality, maybe even the absurdity, of her diagnosis. In truth, though, Zoya seems so unmoved because she’s seen all of this before.

Summer’s over. Looks like it’s time to get back to work. And by work, we mean some serious movie watching. Luckily September doesn’t disappoint. We have everything from the highly-anticipated Megaopolis, the self-funded opus from Francis Ford Coppola, to the star-studded Netflix affair His Three Daughters, to the return of the king of tight, gnarly thrillers, Jeremy Saulnier, with his new one, Rebel Ridge. After starring in five films and eleven TV series last year, Ayo Edebiri’s 2024 is just slightly less crazy. Following up The Bear and Inside Out 2 this summer, she’ll next be seen in Omni Loop, a sci-fi feature that premiered at SXSW earlier this year. Now set for a September 20 theatrical and digital release from Magnolia Pictures, the first trailer has arrived.
Written and directed by Bernardo Britto, the film follows a quantum physicist (Mary-Louise Parker) who finds herself stuck in a time loop, with a black hole growing in her chest and only a week to live. One of Denzel Washington's most iconic movies, which won him his second Oscar of his career, has found streaming life more than 20 years after release. Training Day, the 2001 cop drama which also stars Ethan Hawke, is officially one of the most popular movies on Paramount+, narrowly creeping into the top 10. Training Day falls just short of Mean Girls, which has been enjoying success on Paramount+ for the better part of a week now, and also A Quiet Place Part 2, the sequel starring Emily Blunt and Cillian Murphy. In addition to Washington and Hawke, Training Day also stars Scott Glenn, Tom Berenger, Harris Yulin, and Raymond J. Barry, and the film currently sits at a 74% score from critics and an 89% rating from general audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.

Training Day is one of Denzel Washingtons most successful movies, but director Antoine Fuqua has revealed why the films original test screening was almost a disaster. During an appearance at the Directors on Directors panel at Sdcc, Fuqua recalled the negative audience reactions to the movie all being down to Washingtons popularity as an actor.
As per Collider, Fuqua explained that the main issue with the screening came down to Washington playing the movies antagonistic Alonzo Harris, who is killed by the Russian mafia in the final act of the movie. For many audiences, the death of Washington on screen was too much to take, and ultimately led to them disapproving of the movie as a whole. He said:
Training Day didnt score high in the test screening because I killed Denzel. People were pissed. I almost got ran out of the theater on that one. That was probably the lowest test screening.

History repeats itself in this ingenious but surprisingly heartfelt sci-fi, which takes the premise of Groundhog Day and fashions from it a poignant statement about life and mortality. Refreshingly for the genre, it focuses on a middle-aged woman — a scientist-slash-physicist, even — whose 55th birthday and final breath will occur within the same week. But though there is an element of resistance to the latter, Omni Loop is unusual in that it isn’t simply about breaking the cycle; Bernardo Britto’s film is about facing the inevitable, gently phasing out the genre elements to reach an understated but emotional climax.

Training Day's strength lies in the relationship between Alonzo and Jake, showcasing the real corruption within law enforcement. The theory that Jake was working with Alonzo all along doesn't hold up under scrutiny - the events would be too absurd. Training Day doesn't need ridiculous theories, as it is already a classic with its gritty and realistic portrayal of corruption in the police force.
The classic crime thriller, Training Day, would have been completely ruined if one obscure theory regarding the movie were proven correct. Starring Denzel Washington as Detective Alonzo Harris and Ethan Hawke as Officer Jake Hoyt, Training Day centers around Alonzo showing Jake the ropes to making detective over the course of a day. Filled with great acting performances, particularly one that would earn Washington his second Academy Award, Training Day remains one of Denzel Washington's best movies. Armin Shimerman's favorite episode of DS9 is "Duet," which delves into Bajoran nationalism and Cardassian war crimes. "Duet" showcases DS9's ability to address social issues within the context of space exploration. Armin Shimerman has other favorite Ferengi episodes, including "Bar Association" and "Little Green Men," which explore worker's rights and the dynamics of the Ferengi family.
Although he's best known for playing Quark, one of Armin Shimerman's favorite Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episodes has nothing to do with the Ferengi. DS9's Quark was at the center of some of the show's best episodes, including beloved Ferengi comedies like "Little Green Men." However, there's very little to laugh about in Armin Shimerman's favorite episode from DS9 season 1.
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 1 is notoriously uneven, but it contains flashes of brilliance that demonstrate the potential of the premise. DS9's ability to explore the gray areas...

Leonard Nimoy's connection to Star Trek: Deep Space Nine was through a play he performed in 1971, which inspired the best episode of DS9 season 1. The episode "Duet" was based on Robert Shaw's play "The Man in the Glass Booth," in which Nimoy played dual roles. "Duet" flipped a classic Star Trek: The Original Series episode, "The Conscience of the King," by presenting a more raw and natural tragedy influenced by contemporary theater.
While Leonard Nimoy's Spock would later appear - via archive footage - in the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode "Trials and Tribble-ations," the iconic Star Trek: The Original Series star had a surprising connection to one of DS9 season 1's best episodes. By the time DS9 premiered in 1993, Leonard Nimoy had made what appeared to be his final appearance as Spock in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. However, Nimoy was eventually coaxed out of...

Star Trek: Voyager's "Jetrel" failed to recreate the compelling storyline of "Duet" from Deep Space Nine, focusing too much on exposition and lacking dramatic action. Unlike "Duet," which delved deep into Kira's established history, "Jetrel" was only able to scratch the surface of Neelix's traumatic past. Voyager made up for the lackluster portrayal of Neelix's backstory in "Jetrel" with the well-executed exploration of his character in "Mortal Coil" in season 4.
Star Trek: Voyager season 1 copied a popular Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode, but failed badly in recreating what made the storyline compelling. Voyager season 1, episode 15, "Jetrel" was a reimagined version of Deep Space Nine season 1, episode 19, "Duet." The Voyager episode featured Neelix (Ethan Phillips) being forced to confront his past when Dr. Ma'Bor Jetrel (James Sloyan), a Haakonian scientist who had created the weapon that destroyed Neelix's homeworld, contacted the USS Voyager claiming Neelix was dying of a...

The race by the AMPTP and the WGA to get a deal done by sundown had plenty of folks thinking back to a very memorable episode of Entourage — Doug Ellin, included.
The creator of the HBO comedy was reminded Sunday on X about how the weekend negotiations between the AMPTP and the WGA sounded “like an Entourage storyline.”
Ellin replied, “And on Yom Kippur it sure does.”
Not sure what he’s talking about? Think back 16 years ago to the season 3 episode dubbed “The Return of the King.” The 2007 episode kicks off with the boys at the race track while Ari Gold (Jeremy Piven) is arriving at temple before the start of Yom Kippur. That’s when he runs into Nick Rubenstein (Adam Goldberg), the neurotic son of movie producer Phil Rubenstein who is making the movie Medellin with Paul Haggis.

Star Trek was conceived in part as a way to attract talented actors without being tied down to long-term contracts. The Original Series essentially sends the Enterprise to a new planet with a new problem every week, allowing guest stars to play meaty parts and then step away. Subsequent series often made use of the tactic as well, though the increasingly complicated arcs that started with Star Trek: Deep Space Nine made them less frequent.
As a result, the franchise offers a bumper crop of great characters who only appeared once in the franchise. They grow less frequent with later Star Trek shows, who invariably bring good characters back for a curtain call. 10 of the best are discussed below.

I’m not sure “Ozark” ever improved upon “Kaleidoscope.” The first season’s eighth episode takes place entirely in flashback, as director Ellen Kuras and writer Ryan Farley bounce between the pivotal choices that precede the Byrdes’ fateful decision to start laundering money. Wendy (Laura Linney) is fighting through an extended depression, brought on by a complicated miscarriage, and she’s doubly frustrated by a job market closed off to a woman who spent a few years having kids. Marty (Jason Bateman), who’s typically mocked for his cautious nature as “the numbers guy,” is being courted by Camino Del Rio (Esai Morales), who wants to hire the Chicago-based financial advisor to handle his accounts, even after (or because) Marty spots suspicious activity on the books.

More than 30 years after he first donned that infamous Batman suit, Michael Keaton is stepping back into familiar territory. On Monday, Keaton’s agency confirmed that he will appear as Batman in the forthcoming movie “The Flash,” which began filming in the U.K. this week. The film won’t be hitting theaters until 2022, which gives you plenty of time to catch up Keaton’s “Batman” movies and a bunch of other films in his catalog such as “Beetlejuice,” “Birdman,” “Multiplicity,” and “The Founder.”
The 69-year-old actor played Batman in the 1989 blockbuster directed by Tim Burton, and its 1992 sequel, “Batman Returns.” Pretty much all of the “Batman” movies are currently streaming on HBO Max.

Frank Perry’s version of the shootout at the O.K. Corral shapes up as a fine western and an even better drama — the revisionist angle is supported by an excellent script and thoughtful, challenging characterizations. Tombstone’s frontier folk are dirty, vulgar and corrupt, but Stacy Keach and Faye Dunaway generate a rough-hewn romantic harmony. Harris Yulin’s Wyatt Earp is a revelation as well — if this were modern times Earp would get a lock on city hall politics and go into the land development racket. The beautifully filmed movie looks terrific on disc. Alex Cox delivers a solid audio commentary as well.

Have you ever watched and enjoyed a movie, but by the time it ends, you're not really sure what it was trying to accomplish?
That's how I felt after watching The Sounding, the feature debut of its co-writer, director, and star, Catherine Eaton.
Eaton co-wrote the film with Bryan Delaney. It's the first feature for both, but they had some pull, landing an admirable cast, up for the challenge of a story about a young woman named Liv (Eaton).
For all intents and purposes, Liv is an ordinary woman. But she has an extraordinary story -- she hasn't spoken a word in years with no discernable explanation.
Liv's grandfather, Lionel (Harris Yulin), in ill health and concerned over his grandaughter's future in light of his imminent passing, calls on the son of an old friend, a neuropsychologist named Michael (Teddy Sears), to help Liv when the time is right.

Rowan Atkinson has now been playing the role for over three decades, starting with the original sitcom and later reprising the role in two theatrical movies.

Above: Candy Mountain“How much of this film is composed, and how much is improvised?” The obvious question posed by Robert Frank’s first film (coauthored by painter Alfred Leslie), Pull My Daisy (1959), is also posed, sometimes less obviously, by the authored and coauthored Frank films that follow it—an unwieldy filmography that has on occasion become even harder to access because of the unwieldy ways it was financed or put together. To wonder whether they’re Frank or just frank is arguably another way of interrogating their relative degrees of sincerity or subterfuge, non-fiction or fiction, single or collective authorship. And it’s ultimately our call whether any shot in a Frank film corresponds to a declarative statement or a question—something that might also apply to his better known, more celebrated, and noncollaborative still photography. “After seeing these pictures,” wrote Jack Kerouac of The Americans, “you end up...

Brian De Palma’s 1983 saga of hoodlum Tony Montana is an exceptional remake that’s become a classic almost by default — it’s too strikingly original to ignore. De Palma did the Latin male stereotype no favors, while bringing attention to the outrageous drug trafficking aided by law enforcement and criminal banks in a shameful decade of excess. Al Pacino added a page to his catalog of great performances, and the careers of Michelle Pfeiffer and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio were duly launched. De Palma gives this one ‘classical’ direction: he skips his former film school cinema games and homages to Hitch the Master.

Need to catch up? Check out our previous Murphy Brown recap here.
Murphy Brown tackled the #MeToo movement this week, as Murphy was rocked by a painful memory from her distant past.
Murphy’s TV show has to complete a mandatory sexual harassment seminar, which everyone groans about — except Pat, who’s excited to participate. (“Today, I am a man!”) Murphy blows off the dire warnings from the seminar’s leader — “The show’s called Murphy in the Morning! They’re not firing me!” — until the guy reminds her about Matt Lauer… and Charlie Rose… and Bill O’Reilly. But...

"I saw an untapped market..." Taking all bets! Vertical Entertainment has released an official trailer for an indie comedy titled All Square, which first premiered at the SXSW Film Festival this year and played at a few other fests. All Square stars character actor Michael Kelly as a down-on-his-luck bookie who befriends an ex-girlfriend's son and begins taking bets on his youth baseball games, creating chaos in the community. Sounds like fun, actually. The full ensemble cast of this indie includes Pamela Adlon, Jesse Ray Sheps, Josh Lucas, Tom Everett Scott, Isiah Whitlock Jr., Harris Yulin, Yeardley Smith, Jonathan Rosenthal, Craig Walker, Jay Larson, Neal Huff, and Brett Davis. This looks good - like Scorsese meets Linklater, telling an amusing small-town crime story surrounding kids' baseball games. Check it out. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for John Hyams' All Square, direct from YouTube: John Zbikowski (Michael Kelly) is a down-on-his-luck,...

Jason Bateman earned his third and fourth Emmy nominations this year for his work on the Netflix series “Ozark.” Bateman received a Best Drama Actor nomination, which some awards pundits predicted, but he surprised many by also receiving a Best Drama Directing nomination for the show. Bateman had previously received two Best Comedy Actor nominations for his work on “Arrested Development” (2005 and 2013), so can this comedy favorite now win for a dramatic role?
Bateman joins Bill Hader (“Barry”) and Donald Glover (“Atlanta”) on the list of this year’s actors who also managed to receive directing nominations for their shows. For his Emmy episode submission for his acting nomination Bateman has selected the final episode of the season, entitled “The Toll.” (That episode is also his submission for directing.)
