Network TV dramas love suspense. These shows are designed to leave questions unanswered for as long as possible, bringing viewers back time after time with teases and cliffhangers before finally explaining themselves with a flashback episode or big reveal. It's a tried and true formula; the mystery is sweet, but the emotional payoff (and the "I told you so" that comes with a correct guess) is sweeter.
Unless that show is "NCIS," a series that has been on seemingly since the dawn of time but didn't actually answer vital questions about the death of its protagonist's first wife until 2024. The CBS drama about a naval crimes investigative unit wasn't actually the show that broke the news, either: Mark Harmon left "NCIS" in 2021, but his character, Leroy Jethro Gibbs, lives on in the form of Austin Stowell, who now plays a younger, greener version of the agent on the prequel series "NCIS: Origins.

As Gibbs' time on NCIS has ended, his character's storyline can only be continued in NCIS: Origins. The prequel will follow Leroy Jethro Gibbs before he becomes an NCIS special agent, so there are several narratives that NCIS: Origins can reveal. Gibbs was a main character in NCIS for almost 20 years, so many aspects of his character's life and personality have already been explored. However, this NCIS spinoff can examine Gibbs' character more deeply and show his backstory as it happened in the early 1990s.
NCIS: Origins' story will be set in 1991, shortly after the deaths of Gibbs' first wife and daughter. This means that the show will have a chance to explore scenes that occurred before Mark Harmon took on the role. While NCIS often had flashback episodes, the episodes always looked at specific, defining moments in the character's lives. The prequel will be able to show the aftermath...

NCIS: Origins is debuting, so here are some classic NCIS episodes to watch to get ready for it!
NCIS fans have long been missing Agent Jethro Gibbs. The heart of the series since it debuted as a backdoor pilot on Jag, Gibbs was loved for his stern demeanor, dedication to his job, sometimes wry humor and tragic backstory of losing a wife and child. Mark Harmon made the character beloved, so it was a shock when Gibbs opened Season 19 by quitting to retire to Alaska.
Fortunately, Harmon will be returning to the franchise in a unique way. NCIS: Origins takes us back to 1993 with Austin Stowell playing a younger Gibbs joining the agency and how he became the agent we know. It looks to be an intriguing spin on the franchise and to prepare for it, these episodes are must-watch to see what parts of Gibbs' life can come to play.

Sneak Peek "In the Dark", the 'comedy-drama' TV series, created by Corinne Kingsbury, with Season Two premiering April 16, 2020 on The CW:
"...'Murphy', an irreverent blind woman in her twenties, seemingly drifts through life in a drunken haze. She has only two friends—'Jess', her understanding roommate, and 'Tyson', a teenage drug-dealer who saved her from a violent mugging. Out for a walk with her guide dog, 'Pretzel', she stumbles upon a body that must be Tyson's, but it disappears before the police arrive. When they do not seem inclined to investigate, Murphy clings onto the only thing that can keep her together: figuring out what happened to her friend. She resolves to solve the murder herself, while also managing her colorful dating life and the job she hates at 'Guiding Hope', a school for training guide dogs run by her parents..."

There's good news tonight. The CW has given an early third season renewal to the network's In the Dark TV series. The show was renewed for a second season back in May 2019, while the first season was still airing. There's no word on when season two will see the light of day but a summer run seems likely.
A comedy-drama, In the Dark stars Perry Mattfeld, Rich Sommer, Brooke Markham, Casey Deidrick, Keston John, Morgan Krantz, Thamela Mpumlwana, Derek Webster, and Kathleen York. When she stumbles upon the body of a drug-dealing kid, Tyson (Mpumlwana), who once saved her from a mugger, Dean Riley (Sommer) and the other cops find her drunken account less than convincing and nobody in sight. The CW has announced a flurry of renewals.
Three of the network’s freshman shows, “All American,” “Roswell, New Mexico” and “In The Dark,” will return for second seasons, as well as “The 100,” which gets a seventh outing. This means that all five of The CW’s first-year shows, including the previously-renewed “Legacies” and “Charmed,” have been picked up for a sophomore run, a first for the network.
The sixth season of “The 100” is set to premiere on April 30, and will see the characters descending to a new planet after being frozen in stasis pods on a spaceship for decades, after escaping an uninhabitable Earth.
“The 100,” originally inspired by the young adult novels by Kass Morgan, is from Bonanza Productions Inc. in association with Alloy Entertainment, Warner Bros. In the Dark‘s Murphy Mason isn’t your typical CW heroine: She’s a disaffected, sardonic, kind of callous twentysomething who enjoys her booze and morning-after pills. And she also happens to be blind.

On December 17 the Oscar shortlists were announced in nine categories including Best Original Song, and included among the tunes that made the final 15 is “All the Stars” from “Black Panther,” which is performed and co-written by Kendrick Lamar and Sza. Could a hip-hop song like that actually win? The motion picture academy often seems rather conservative in its tastes, but when it comes to music the Oscars might actually be more progressive than the Grammys.
Granted, Lamar has won 12 Grammys, and with another 8 nominations this year he’ll probably pick up a few more. But in the top four categories where Grammy voters choose their favorites across all genres, rap can’t catch a break. Despite frequent nominations for the genre, only one rap album has ever won Album of the Year (“Speakerboxxx/The Love Below” by OutKast in 2004), and rap has never won Record or Song of the Year.

The network has placed an order for All American, which was formerly known as Spencer.
The official logline reads:
When a rising high school football player from South Central L.A. is recruited to play for Beverly Hills High, the wins, losses, and struggles of two families from vastly different worlds — Compton and Beverly Hills — begin to collide. Inspired by the life of pro football player Spencer Paysinger.
It stars Daniel Ezra, Taye Diggs, Samantha Logan, Bre-z, Greta Onieogou, Monet Mazur, Michael Evans Behling, Cody Christian and Karimah Westbrook.

Kendrick Lamar was skunked by the Grammys for Album of the Year again this year, with the recording academy once again voting for the most adult-contemporary-friendly option — in this case, Bruno Mars (“24K Magic”). But why wait around for music’s top prize when you can go for film’s highest honor? He co-wrote the entire soundtrack album for the new Marvel film “Black Panther.” He might actually have a better shot at the Oscars since the motion picture academy has demonstrated that it’s far more open to hip-hop music than the Grammys are. Most of Aaron Sorkin’s professional life has been spent making political debates — both personal and public — into poetically entertaining and informative exchanges. In “The West Wing,” he did it every week. Josh and Toby would fight it out until one was proven the victor or a compromise was reached. In “The Newsroom,” Will McAvoy would lambaste politicians, and his reports would often lead to various ethical conversations with his staff.
The point is, Aaron Sorkin knows a thing or two about winning a debate, and our current presidential candidates could learn from his work. We’ve examined the most pertinent examples of debate procedures, and the points below represent key strategies for winning a verbal battle. Apply them wisely.

'Crash' movie: Ryan Phillippe. 'Crash' movie review: California tossin' and turnin' Screenwriter Paul Haggis' multiple award-winning directorial debut, Crash, is set in a Los Angeles that is part Quentin Tarantino, part Paul Thomas Anderson, part Spike Lee, part Bret Easton Ellis. Haggis' L.A. also happens to be a place with precious little in common with the Southern California metropolis located on Planet Earth. In the film, Haggis and co-screenwriter Robert Moresco tell us – or rather, scream at us – that the Angeleno boiling (definitely not melting) pot is about to explode at any moment, as Los Angeles denizens spend all their spare time hating, fearing, misunderstanding, and cheating on one another. And perhaps much of that is true, except that most of that hate, fear, misunderstanding, and cheating have absolutely nothing to do with ethnic or national differences. But not in this particular L.A., situated in some warped La...

The Blu-ray edition of writer/director Dan Gilroy's Nightcrawler streets on February 10 (available to stream right now) and it doesn't come with a wealth of features, but the audio commentary featuring Dan and his brothers Tony Gilroy, who served as producer, and John Gilroy, who served as the film's editor, is a fascinating listen. I took several notes while listening to the track but there are a couple things I have to say first, 1.) since they are brothers they sound very much alike and it's often difficult to tell them apart so don't expect too many direct quotes and 2.) while I can relay a lot of what I took away from the commentary it really stands as one you ought to listen to for yourself to entirely grasp everything they say. There is a very fluid motion to the conversation and frequently they'll discuss something entirely different from the...

This week's Castle takes its name from a 90s Arnie action spoof, but does it deliver on that meta promise? Here's Laura's review...
This review contains spoilers.
7.9 Last Action Hero
Sometimes, the hardest thing about reviewing something is overcoming the expectations that you take in with you. In some cases, this is purely a result of the individual makeup of the reviewer. In others, it’s because the producers created those expectations. For me, this week, with Castle, it’s both. And that’s because a) the writers chose to title last week’s episode Last Action Hero, and b) I may be the only critic alive to have really enjoyed the 1993 John McTiernan film of the same name, starring/spoofing Arnold Schwarzenegger.
What sold me on the movie, aside from Charles Dance as a dastardly villain and its metanarrative, was its satire. As an action-movie fan who is also...

Since its premiere at Sundance, Richard Linklater’s Boyhood has been garnering Oscar buzz and rave reviews. The film could score nominations for best picture, director, actor and more, but after submitting three songs to the Academy for consideration in the best original song category, the film could add another nomination. Two of the songs were written by Ethan Hawke, who could garner a best supporting actor nomination for his portrayal of the father. If Hawke receives a best original song nomination for one of his songs, he will join a short list of actors who have scored nominations for songs since 1994.

Perhaps it’s just me (it is), but I can’t help but feel NCIS is spinning its wheels now that it’s in its eleventh season. Despite being the number one drama on television, we can’t deny that it is just a CBS procedural that’s been on for over a decade. At some point the episodes begin to blend into one another and the ideas don’t seem all that inspired anymore. What makes me think this is just how excited the creatives behind NCIS seem to be about the possibility of finally introducing Gibbs’ second ex-wife. Sure, it’s someone we’ve heard about, but has remained entirely unknown and mysterious. Is it really worth a whole storyline for?
While it hasn’t been officially ordered, it looks like Season 12 is going to be the place for this character’s introduction. Gary Glasberg told TVLine that Ex-wife No.

A planned auction of 54 VHS tapes featuring early auditions by actors Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, Sandra Bullock, and many others has touched off a fit of handwringing in the casting community and endangered the age-old idea of the audition room as sacred space. On April 5–6, Julien’s Auctions of Beverly Hills will put the tapes up for sale, some with suggested values as high as $2,000–$4,000. Darren Julien and Martin Nolan appeared on NBC’s “Today” March 29 to publicize the auction and claimed that the tapes were being sold by three casting directors who wished to remain anonymous.
