Oliver Stone has argued that American financiers appear reluctant to support films about U.S. political history after he had to turn to Europe to fund his documentary JFK Revisited: Through the Looking Glass.
Stone is at the Cannes Film Festival to promote his assassination pic, which was bankrolled by UK firm Ingenious Media and is distributed by another British outfit in the shape of Altitude Film Sales. “We have to go, for our own history, to Europe,” he told a press conference on Tuesday. “England has played a large role in this.”
Producer Robert S. Wilson went further, telling delegates: “There’s a real problem in the U.S. with this side of the film industry owning our history. It’s depressing that we have to go to England to get money to tell the story that’s very intrinsically American.”
Stone said he had encountered the issue before on 2016’s Snowden,...

Oliver Stone is not pleased that American financiers refused to step up and help make his new documentary about the late John F. Kennedy.
Stone and his producer Robert S. Wilson discussed the Cannes Film Festival premiere “JFK Revisited: Through the Looking Glass” at a Tuesday press conference, bemoaning a lack of domestic financial support.
“It’s depressing that we have to go to England to get money to tell this story that’s intrinsically American,” Wilson said. “There’s a real problem with the U.S., this side of the film industry owning our history in a way.”
Stone agreed, “It was difficult. England played a larger role.” U.K.-based Ingenious Media produced the documentary, and English sales agency Altitude is shopping it to worldwide territories. Stone said the process was familiar, as his 2016 whistleblower epic “Snowden” was also snubbed by American money and instead mounted by France,...

Jesus is back — that is, John Turturro’s Jesus Quntana character from “The Big Lebowski” in a Screen Media’s trailer for the spinoff movie “The Jesus Rolls.”
The footage shows Turturro, who also directed, with his memorable licking of a bowling ball before sending it down a lane and into outer space.
“The Jesus Rolls” also stars Bobby Cannavale, Susan Sarandon, Jon Hamm, Audrey Tautou, and Christopher Walken. The trailer did not include an appearance by Jeff Bridges’ character Jeff “The Dude” Lebowski from the original 1998 movie, in which Turturro’s character taunted Lebowski and his bowling team at a bowling alley and referred to himself as “The Jesus.”
“The Jesus Rolls” follows a trio of misfits — Turturro, Cannavle and Tatou — whose sexually charged dynamic evolves into a surprising love story as their spontaneous and flippant attitude towards the past or future backfires time and again, even as they inadvertently perform good deeds.

“The Jesus Rolls” follows a trio of misfits whose sexually charged dynamic evolves into a surprising love story as their spontaneous and flippant attitude towards the past or future backfires time and again, even as they inadvertently perform good deeds. When they make enemies with a gun-toting hairdresser, their journey becomes one of constant escape from the law, from society and from the hairdresser, all while the bonds of their outsider family strengthen.
The film, formerly titled “Going Places,” is produced by Robert Salerno, John Penotti, Fernando Sulichin, Sidney Kimmel and Paul-Dominique Win Vacharasinthu.

Oliver Stone has interviewed Russian president Vladimir Putin more than a dozen times over the past two years. Now, Stone and his documentary producer Fernando Sulichin have turned those chats into “The Putin Interviews,” a four-hour documentary series airing over four nights this June on Showtime.
Check out a first look at “The Putin Interviews” below. Stone most recently interviewed Putin in February, after the U.S. presidential elections (in which Putin and Russia are believed to have actively influenced). Showtime compares “The Putin Interviews” to David Frost’s famed conversations with Richard Nixon in 1977.
Stone and Sulichin were granted wide access to Putin’s personal and professional lives. “It’s not a documentary as much as a question and answer session,” Stone told the Sydney Morning Herald. “”It opens up a whole viewpoint that we as Americans haven’t heard… He talks pretty straight. I think we did him...

Cinema Libre has acquired North American rights to Oliver Stone's documentary "South of the Border," which chronicles the rise to power of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and other South American leaders.
The distributor plans to launch the film with a June 25 bow in New York City, followed by a July 2 opening in Los Angeles.
"Not only is it a genuine honor to work with one of the greatest American directors but his insightful documentary shows how these leaders of Latin America are being intentionally villanized by the Us mass media," Philippe Diaz, founder of Cinema Libre, said, "This unique dialogue needed the eye and the courage of a director like Stone to convince us that these leaders are fighting for a more humane society which means defending themselves against American corporate interests."
The film, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival, was produced by Fernando Sulichin, Rob Wilson and Jose Ibanez.
