If American filmgoers are at all aware of the work of filmmaker Damiano Damiani, it’s likely because of his deranged “Zapata western” A Bullet for the General, or else his bonkers horror sequel Amityville II: The Possession, which easily surpasses its more famous predecessor in sheer Wtf factor. Neither of those films are necessarily indicative of Damiani’s serious-minded approach to the titles included in Radiance Films’s Cosa Nostra: Franco Nero in Three Mafia Tales by Damiano Damiani, but they do illustrate Damiani’s determination to pepper his works with pungent social commentary. The three films in this new box set may illuminate very different aspects of the mafia’s tentacular grip on Sicilian society, but they’re united in their bleak, often hopeless diagnoses of these social ills.

In the late 1970s, an associate professor in the Philosophy department at Johns Hopkins (thesis title: "The Nature of the Natural Numbers") began publishing essays on Hollywood movies. George M. Wilson wasn't the first person to undergo this shift in specialism. At the start of the decade, Stanley Cavell had published The World Viewed, a series of "reflections on the ontology of film." But Cavell had always been concerned with how works of art enable us to think through philosophical themes such as knowledge and meaning, and he held a chair, at Harvard, in Aesthetics. Wilson differed in that he brought a range of analytic gifts to an ongoing revolution: the close reading of American cinema, conceived as part of the "auteur" policy of Truffaut and other writers at Cahiers du cinéma in the 1950s, and concertedly developed in the following decades by critics in England such as V. F.

While Lucio Fulci made his reputation with a series of graphically violent horror movies like Zombie (Aka Zombi 2), City of the Living Dead (Aka The Gates of Hell), The House by the Cemetery, The Beyond, and The New York Ripper, his early career was a hodgepodge of film genres including comedies, spaghetti westerns, and poliziotteschi. However, many critics argue that his greatest films were his early gialli films like A Lizard in a Woman’s Skin and Don’t Torture a Duckling. Fulci was handicapped by terribly low budgets for most of his career but some of his earlier works were actually well-funded, allowing his cinematic craftsmanship to be on full display. Such was the case with Don’t Torture a Duckling.
As was the case with many gialli of the time period, the film titles were influenced by Argento’s first three gialli, collectively known as the “Animal Trilogy.

I have wonderful Yuletide memories. Like every young boy, I quickly learned that the true meaning of the Holiday Season was… getting more stuff. And being the greedy little monster I was, (and, I guess, I remain) I also learned that I could extend that wonderful feeling of “Christmas Acquisition” through books. More than a toy, or apparel or certainly candy, the enjoyment of a book would linger well past the twelve days of Christmas.
As a comics fan back in the day, actual books about comics were few and far between. One that did make it onto the traditional bookstore shelves was Jules Feiffer’s The Great Comic Book Heroes. Soon after Superman: From the 30’s to the 70’s was a one of those “big wow” books about comics that was gifted to me. It was so massively thick that I couldn’t imagine anyone would be able...

A business magazine recently featured a story about the astoundingly short average life span of today’s companies, brands and product leaders. They noted that the average life expectancy of a modern company is something like 15 years. I think about a brand like PalmPilot, where one of my college buddies made a fortune, and how that name is practically a trivia question for this year’s Mba graduates. (“Is it a helicopter operator in Palm Beach?”) Likewise, cool companies they want to work for include Google and Lululemon – brands that didn’t exist 15 years ago.
So with all that in mind, let’s explore the opposite: the challenges of working with an 80-year-old brand in such a fickle climate.
Created in 1936, Lee Falk’s The Phantom was the first costumed comic hero. Bridging the gap of the masked vigilantes of the pulps (The Shadow, The Spider, etc.) and comic book superheroes,...

Crime and Punishment: Sautet’s Enthralling Policier an Obscure Neo-Noir
Following the international acclaim of his 1970 film The Things of Life, Claude Sautet re-teamed with his leads Michel Piccoli and Romy Schneider for a return to the criminal tendencies comprising his earlier filmography as a director. Less well known today than his 1960 classic Classe Tous Risques, Sautet’s 1971 devious psychological drama Max and the Junkmen is well worth reexamination in modern contexts. As has been pointed out before, Sautet’s genre efforts have long languished in the shadows of Jean-Pierre Meville’s filmography, with well-renowned crime sagas like Le Samourai (1967) and Le Cercle Rouge (1970) having already been released by the time Sautet hit his stride. But while Melville’s celebrated filmography focuses on precise elaboration, Sautet’s outings within genre tend to be character oriented, in particular lending this title a melancholy tint, doubled over in its final, dramatic climax.

The Long Absence (Une aussi longue absence)
Directed by Henri Colpi
Written by Marguerite Duras and Gerald Jarlot
France, 1961
The 1960s were an important and innovative time in French film history. Although France has always been the front-runner for the daring, the urbane and the inventive when it comes to cinema (amongst other things), it was during this revolutionary decade in particular that French filmmakers began to personalise their work in ways that changed the filmic landscape permanently. There are many praiseworthy and well-known examples that can be given to further emphasize this statement, such as Jean-Luc Godard’s Le mépris (1963) or Jacques Demy’s Les parapluies de Cherbourg (1964), however, there are also some lesser known films that help to further accentuate what was going on in France post World War II. It is with these less familiar films that perhaps audiences are able to better comprehend the everyday struggles...

The latest film version of The Great Gatsby is currently the talk of the film industry, having just debuted Stateside and opened the Cannes Film Festival this week. Based on F Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel, the story showcases everything from seduction and money to buried secrets among the elite society in the Roaring '20s.
We take a look back at the five Gatsby screen adaptations in time for the release of Baz Luhrmann's new Leonardo DiCaprio-led film.

The Movie: The Great Gatsby (2013) Studio: Warner Bros. Director: Baz Luhrmann Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby, Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway, Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan, Joel Edgerton as Tom Buchanan, Elizabeth Debicki as Jordan Baker, Isla Fisher as Myrtle Wilson and Jason Clarke as George Wilson Screenwriters: Baz Luhrmann and Craig Pearce, based on the novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald RottenTomatoes: 48% MetaCritic: 55/100 Snippet from My Review: (read my full review here) The Great Gatsby is, without a doubt, too long and yet it isn't a disaster. Neither is it a great film or even really a good one for that matter. I did, however, love DiCaprio and Debicki as well as the themes that shine through even though Luhrmann felt compelled to overplay them. I do believe Luhrmann is the right director to give this story a life unlike what is found in the pages of Fitzgerald's book...

The Great Gatsby Movie: Leonardo DiCaprio: ‘Heir apparent to Cary Grant’ (photo: Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan in The Great Gatsby) [See previous post: "The Great Gatsby 2013: Leonardo DiCaprio, Baz Luhrmann Shine; Story Essence Lost."] The role of the enigmatic, larger-than-life Gatsby would seem a difficult one to cast in an age when movie stars have been replaced by whatever pre-digested superhero is easiest to market and promote. Consider us lucky that one of the only movie stars left in American film makes a terrific Gatsby. There are moments when Leonardo DiCaprio, who previously worked with Luhrmann in 1996’s Romeo + Juliet, looks the heir apparent to Cary Grant. Our first head-on shot of Gatsby shows the character as the very embodiment of America’s unbridled optimism. His reputation as a good-time Charlie is surpassed only by his opacity. To the hundreds of guests who excitedly converge upon his bedazzled mansion, he’s a glamorous riddle, a thrower of epic house parties who might have...

We start the Top 7. You finish the Top 10.
While modern Hollywood may always be ravenous for an adaptation, no director has such a unique taste for giving classic literature the poppy cinematic treatment like director Baz Luhrmann. In 1996, he helmed Romeo + Juliet, which used dialogue ripped right from Shakespeare’s text, and placed the story into a contemporary setting enlivened by a thoroughly ’90s soundtrack.

Luhrmann’s latest attempt at sprucing up a classic comes with The Great Gatsby, an adaptation that respects the time period of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s famous novel, but utilizes a contemporary soundtrack and a wild color palette. This version of Great Gatsby overall remains fairly faithful to its source material, honoring sections of dialogue verbatim, and slimming down the novel’s gorgeous narration. However, there are some curious additions and omissions in this film,...

Filmmakers who adapt a novel are not beholden to the major themes of that novel. They're free to take away what they want to see and leave the richer aspects of the material behind. Such is the case with Baz Luhrmann's adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. Where Fitzgerald saw the relationship between Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan as a laughable excuse to escape into the past, Luhrmann sees a doomed romance because Baz Luhrmann likes stories about doomed romances*. And like his previous movies—Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge!, and Australia—Luhrmann is too afraid of actual intimacy, and covers it up in glitter and other shiny objects while laboring under the delusion that it makes the story operatic. With The Great Gatsby, Luhrmann isn't adapting Fitzgerald as much as he's remaking Baz Luhrmann. Breaking away from the novel, Luhrmann's version has Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) in a sanitarium.

"The Great Gatsby" has been a staple on the high school and college syllabus for nearly a century, so it's probably not a big spoiler to remind you that Jay Gatsby dies near the end, shot to death in his swimming pool by George Wilson, who mistakenly blames Gatsby for driving the car that killed Wilson's wife, Myrtle. But even if you hadn't read the book, it wouldn't be too big of a shock to see Leonardo DiCaprio's Gatsby die in the new film version of "The Great Gatsby" (opening May 10). After all, it's hard to think of a current leading man who's suffered more on-screen deaths than DiCaprio. (For what it's worth, DiCaprio is stepping into the shoes of Robert Redford, who played Gatsby in the 1974 version, and who was the leading man in his own day who was least likely to survive until the the end credits rolled.

For its first two thirds, Baz Luhrmann’s “The Great Gatsby” is busy busy busy with nary a minute to avoid an onslaught of stylized metaphors. People keep asking me Is it like “Moulin Rouge”? Well no, it’s not nearly as unruly because Luhrmann has to stick– more or less- to the F. Scott Fitzgerald text. He has a structure and a story and at some point he has to get with the program. And he does. The last third of his Gatsby is one of the most beautiful, moving films I’ve ever seen. And the first two thirds? They are a joyride through the director’s wild imagination. So we’ve got Leonardo DiCaprio as the mysterious and pained Gatsby, Tobey Maguire as the narrator Nick Carraway, Carey Mulligan and Joel Edgerton as Daisy and Tom Buchanan. And then are the secondary roles: Elizabeth Debicki making quite...

“I want to write something new, something extraordinary and beautiful and simple and intricately patterned.”
—F. Scott Fitzgerald
From the uniquely imaginative mind of writer/producer/director Baz Luhrmann comes the new big screen adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby. In his adaptation, the filmmaker combines his distinctive visual, sonic, and storytelling styles in 3 Dimensions, weaving a Jazz Age cocktail faithful to Fitzgerald’s text and relevant to now. Leonardo DiCaprio stars in the title role.
In theaters on May 10th, “The Great Gatsby” follows would-be writer Nick Carraway as he leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz, bootleg kings, and sky-rocketing stocks. Chasing his own American Dream, Nick lands next door to a mysterious, party-giving millionaire, Jay Gatsby, and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy, and her philandering, blue-blooded husband, Tom Buchanan.

If you listen to the show, you know that I’m nervous about Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming effort, The Great Gatsby. I’m unconvinced that Leo can pull of Gatsby, if I’m being honest, but more importantly, Luhrmann’s bent toward dropping stories into the same formula doesn’t seem in line with the story.
At any rate, it seems like some things are being managed well enough, if we just look at the images. I’ll give them Carey Mulligan though, she could be a good fit.
Will you be in line for this one on opening day?

Just when it seemed like there was no possible way for Baz Luhrmann to blow us away any further with The Great Gatsby, the third trailer for the film hits the web featuring a ton of new footage and showcasing some of the soundtrack’s original songs. It is also astonishingly good.
I could, and probably will, be raving about this trailer for days. The first two were exceptional, but this is just on a whole new level. It doesn’t have the surprise factor of last summer’s trailer, but it more than makes up for that in new footage and incredible music.
The narration from Tobey Maguire does a lot to enlighten those who may not be as familiar with the original novel, but perhaps the best moment is when Leonardo DiCaprio loses his cool at Joel Edgerton, silencing the room and the trailer. This preview also provides...

The following Great Gatsby posters are brought to you by The Lebanese Cinema Movie Guide.
Many of us are crossing our fingers hoping that this Baz Luhrmann-directed Gatsby will do justice to F. Scott Fitzgerald’s best-known work. Luhrmann did a respectable job with William Shakespeare’s best-known work twelve years ago and he did it with Leonardo DiCaprio as his leading man. On May 10th, we will know if this reunion between director and leading man yielded similar results.

On the heels of the announcement that director Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby will open the Cannes Film Festival on May 15th, comes official word that Grammy Award-winning musical artist Shawn “Jay Z” Carter has collaborated on the film and is serving as Executive Producer to bring the modern “Jazz Age” energy of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s original text to the big screen, procuring, performing, producing and arranging for a soundtrack featuring some of the world’s top musical artists.
Jay Z’s contributions, woven amongst a score by long-time Luhrmann collaborator, composer Craig Armstrong, drive Gatsby’s champagne-infused dance floors, rumble in New York’s illegal speakeasies, and foreshadow the tragedy behind Gatsby’s “extraordinary gift for hope.” To articulate the film’s “1920s-Meets-Now” sound, Jay Z also comes to “The Great Gatsby” soundtrack as a performer and contributor of original music.

Though still in pre-production mode, Matt Reeves is slowly putting together his upcoming movie, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Today, he’s nabbed Jason Clarke, who gave a memorable performance playing the unmerciful CIA operative in Zero Dark Thirty.
Set fifteen years after what happens in the prequel, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes follows a group of scientists trying to survive after the population has dwindled due to the virus that was unleashed in Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Clarke will most likely be playing one of the scientists but that is unconfirmed as of now. The storyline also sees the highly intelligent ape, Caesar (portrayed by Andy Serkis) struggling to maintain his position as the king of the apes.

From the uniquely imaginative mind of writer/producer/director Baz Luhrmann come the brand new trailers for The Great Gatsby. The filmmaker created his own distinctive visual interpretation of the classic story, bringing the period to life in a way that has never been seen before, in a film starring Leonardo DiCaprio in the title role. While I love the Robert Redford/Mia Farrow 1974 version, I’m eager to see what Luhrmann does with the latest big screen adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald.s novel.
The Great Gatsby follows Fitzgerald-like, would-be writer Nick Carraway as he leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz, bootleg kings, and sky-rocketing stocks. "...There was an immediately perceptible vitality about her as if the nerves of her body were continually smouldering." Warner Bros. Pictures has released a new character poster for The Great Gatsby, which features Isla Fisher as Myrtle Wilson in this Baz Luhrmann directed adaptation of the classic F. Scott Fitzgerald novel.
Myrtle is the wife of mechanic George Wilson (Jason Clarke), and the mistress of Tom Buchanan (Joel Edgerton), a millionaire who lives on East Egg. Tom's wife, Daisy Buchanan (Carey Mulligan) accidentally kills her in a hit and run accident, and leaves Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio), who is obsessed with Daisy, to take the blame in this adaptation of the great American novel that takes a searing look at the so-called "Roaring Twenties".
The Great Gatsby comes to theaters May 10th, 2013 and stars Carey Mulligan, Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Joel Edgerton, Isla Fisher, Jason Clarke, Callan McAuliffe, Gemma Ward.

Can you imagine how crowded the next few weeks would have been if The Great Gatsby had not pushed to 2013? I almost forget the movie is still coming but I fully anticipate the marketing to rev up, especially if Leonardo DiCaprio wins the Oscar for Django Unchained. Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby will be released in Australia on May 30, 2013, almost three weeks after the Us premiere.
Roadshow Films managing director Joel Pearlman said: .By opening the film after the Us it will provide an opportunity for the stars of the film to attend an Australian premiere befitting a film like Gatsby..
Nonetheless, the delay (the Us release is set for May 10) is likely to spark some disappointment among fans who are increasingly demanding day-and-date releases for blockbusters. In 2011, Roadshow's seven-week delay before the Australian release of Green Lantern sparked a number of fans to complain and threaten to obtain illegal copies.
Gatsby, an Australian adaptation of the classic American novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald, was originally scheduled for December 2012 before a delay was announced in August. The film's production has dragged on with one Nsw government source saying the production spent far more in the state than originally expected.

Baz Luhrmann’s anticipated adaptation of The Great Gatsby was originally set to come out this Christmas, but earlier in the summer, we heard that Warner Bros. had made the decision to push back the release until summer 2013.
The studio has now officially set that release date for 10th May, 2013 in the Us and Canada, which is thankfully a little earlier in the summer (given that, technically, May is still spring) than I was expecting. And really, with this film, the sooner the better.
Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, and Carey Mulligan star as the fantastic leads, supported by the excellent Isla Fisher, Joel Edgerton, Jason Clarke, Amitabh Bachchan, and Elizabeth Debicki.

Exclusive: Jason Clarke has signed with CAA, just as he completes talks to play the male lead role of Abraham Lincoln’s stern father in the Terrence Malick-produced and A.J. Edwards-directed The Green Blade Rises. The fast-rising Australian actor has a slew of big roles coming up. He just appeared in Lawless, and he next stars in the Kathryn Bigelow-directed hunt-for-bin Laden film Zero Dark Thirty, which Sony releases in December. He also completed production of the Baz Luhrmann-directed The Great Gatsby (in the role of gas station owner George Wilson, originated by The Walking Dead‘s Scott Wilson). Clarke is currently in production on White House Down. He had been at UTA.

The film tells of the formative years of the 16th U.S. president and the hardships that shape him including abandonment by his father in the harsh winter wilderness, a tragedy that marked him forever, and the two women who guided him to immortality. Clarke’s character has a callous, quiet demeanor, verbally and physically abusive towards Abe on many occasions, but lets his son know how proud he is of him. He is married to Sarah Lincoln (played by Diane Kruger), Abe’s beautiful stepmother. It is another big role for the rising Australian actor. Director Fritz Lang has a nigh-on peerless resumé. Metropolis, M, The Big Heat, Scarlet Street and this, only his second film made following his move to Hollywood from an increasingly problematic 1930′s National Socialist-dominated Germany. Film Noir, Expressionism and big themes of determinism, human nature and destiny – all seemlessly woven through his oeuvre and all very much present in this excellent crime drama.

We're still seven months away from the year's end, but with the unveiling of trailers for "Skyfall" and "The Master" yesterday, 2013 seems that little bit closer now, doesn't it? Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel "The Great Gatsby," both of which star Leonardo DiCaprio.

Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s renowned The Great Gatsby is one of the many highly anticipated films due out next year, and we’ve already seen some great photos from the set back in August and last month.

Clarke stars in The Wettest County in the World and will be seen in Baz Luhrmann's Great Gatsby as the gas station owner George Wilson.

Exclusive: Jason Clarke is the first actor set for the Kathryn Bigelow-directed drama about the hunt for Osama Bin Laden for Sony Pictures and Megan Ellison’s Annapurna Pictures. An elite group of actors is being courted for the ensemble. I’m told that Clarke–who stars in the Ellison-produced The Wettest County in the World and is playing the gas station owner George Wilson in the Baz Luhrmann-directed The Great Gatsby–will play a terrorist hunter in service of the U.S. efforts to hunt Bin Laden. Also being discussed for roles are Tom Hardy (who also stars in Wettest County), Jennifer Ehle (Contagion), Guy Pearce (who starred in Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker), Idris Elba, Rooney Mara (upcoming Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) and Nina Arianda (Midnight In Paris). The plan is to start production early next year, so availability could be an issue for some of the actors.

Well, she certainly looks the part.
Isla Fisher, who plays the crazy aristocrat-wannabe Myrtle Wilson in Baz Luhrmann's upcoming 3D adaptation of "The Great Gatsby," was spotted on set in her ostentatious best on Tuesday. As the wife of George Wilson and the mistress of Tom Buchannan, she clearly has some major sex appeal -- and she's not afraid to show it. Also, not afraid to wear a gigantic bow.
The film is currently shooting in Australia; Leonardo DiCaprio plays Jay Gatsby; Tobey Maguire takes on Nick Carraway; and Carey Mulligan and Joel Edgerton play Daisy and Tom Buchannan, respectively.
Fisher will also star in "Desperados" in 2012, and in 2014, she'll star in "Now You See Me," the magician caper with Jesse Eisenberg, Morgan Freeman and Mark Ruffalo.

Another day, another batch of set photos from 'The Great Gatsby.' Earlier this week, you you saw the exterior of George Wilson's autoshop -- the location of Myrtle's unfortunate car accident. (Spoilers, but read a book.) Now, there are pictures of stars Tobey Maguire and Joel Edgerton in their best Prohibition-era threads. The images show them riding the train, standing in front of a white picket fence and, in Maguire's case, attacking a railroad worker as if he were on the set of 'Spider-Man.' You can check out the whole collection in the gallery ahead.
