The month of February is bringing terror and heartbreak with films hoping to capitalize on Valentine’s Day, as well as a new slew of sequels to popular films.
This upcoming weekend offers a new addition to the beloved “Paddington” series, a new Marvel entry for “Captain America” and a group of smaller films expanding into wide release ahead of the upcoming Academy Awards.
“Paddington in Peru” transports Paddington Bear (Ben Whishaw) to Peru in order to visit Aunt Lucy (Imelda Staunton), now at the Home for Retired Bears, as an adventure in the Amazon rainforest takes Paddington on an unexpected journey. Dougal Wilson takes over from Paul King, directing a cast that includes Hugh Bonneville, Emily Mortimer, Joel Fry and Robbie Gee.
“Captain America: Brave New World” is the latest film in Phase Five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and follows the Disney+ series “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” and “Avengers: Endgame.

When it comes to cinematic bears, you’d be hard-pressed to think of any as charming as Ben Whishaw’s Paddington. A marmalade-loving fellow whose sweet tooth is matched only by his even sweeter disposition, he’s a distinctly amusing anthropomorphic bear whose humor and heart ensure you’d travel along with him to just about anywhere. With that being said, there is a good chance your experience with “Paddington in Peru,” the still charming yet more than a little scattered sequel to “Paddington” and “Paddington 2,” will hinge on how willing you are to overlook what is a somewhat shaky narrative that often sags rather than it entirely sings.

Paging Sam Wilson! “Captain America: Brave New World” flies to cinemas over the weekend, and Marvel’s latest adventure hopes to thaw an icy box office.
“Captain America: Brave New World,” in which Anthony Mackie’s Avenger takes over the star-spangled shield from Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers, is targeting $80 million to $85 million over the traditional weekend and $90 million to $95 million through the President’s Day holiday. The tentpole, which cost north of $180 million before marketing, is landing in roughly 4,100 North American theaters.
The film is expected to add another $110 million at the international box office, though it’ll contend in China with “Ne Zha 2,” which has become the highest-grossing release in the country’s history with $1.1 billion and counting, and “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy,” which is going straight to Peacock in the U.S. but playing theatrically in the rest of the world.

He’s small, he’s brown, he’s furry and rocks a blue duffel coat and a red hat (no, not that kind of red hat) like nobody’s business. His name is Paddington, and for close to seven decades, this tiny London-based bear has delighted discerning young readers with his extreme politeness, his propensity for getting into misadventures and his loyalty to family and friends.

Review: There is no way that any person can dislike the Paddington films. Beautifully made and whimsically appealing for all ages, the first Paddington was a treat when it hit screens a decade ago, and the sequel was a nearly perfect movie in every way. Seven years have passed since Paddington 2 was released, and the world has survived a pandemic and societal shifts aplenty. After a two-year wait, The Recruit season 2 just premiered on Netflix on Jan. 30. I binge-watched the new season in just a few days, and now, I'm ready for the next spy show to check out next. I bet you are, too!
If you're looking for a new show like The Recruit to watch right now, you're in luck. I shared a list of four good spy shows to watch while we wait to find out if The Recruit is renewed for season 3. The good news is that Netflix has a bunch of new spy and political thrillers to watch right now. We've seen at least four released on Netflix in as many months, not including The Recruit. That streak of new thrillers continues in February with Zero Day starring Robert De Niro coming to Netflix on Feb. 20.
Up first is the Netflix spy series that had a new season premiere...

Independent films – especially ones made and acquired for movie theaters – need all the wins they can get these days, and “slow and steady” is the mantra emerging after a sleepy Sundance Film Festival.
While opening weekend of the January event is typically filled with buzzy stars and late-night bidding wars, this year was marked by unusual silence and reflection as the 41-year-old festival prepares to leave its longtime home in Park City, Utah. But the deals have been coming, the price tags make sense for respective buyers and there’s hope brimming up inside art house circles.
The first and biggest splash was the $17 million check Neon wrote for “Together,” a wild body horror romp about a codependent couple played by real life spouses Alison Brie and Dave Franco. This was powered by stellar audience reception on the ground, and the box office and awards reception currently surrounding “The Substance” didn’t hurt,...

The beloved bear from Darkest Peru is back in his third cinematic outing, “Paddington in Peru,” directed by Dougal Wilson in his feature film debut. This latest installment in the successful franchise sees Paddington returning to his roots in a journey that combines heart, humor, and a touch of mystery.
The film’s narrative centers around Paddington receiving news that his Aunt Lucy is acting strangely at the Home for Retired Bears in Peru. Concerned, Paddington and the Brown family embark on an expedition to South America. Upon arrival, they discover Aunt Lucy has vanished, leaving behind only her glasses and a cryptic map leading to Rumi Rock.
As the Browns seek assistance to navigate Peru’s diverse landscapes, they encounter Hunter Cabot and his daughter Gina, treasure hunters with their own agenda. The story unfolds against the backdrop of Peru’s lush jungles and towering Andes, intertwining Paddington’s...

While Sundance hasn’t had a plethora of the late night bidding wars we used to see in the good old days of the festival, the weirdness of the Los Angeles fires and the advent of the online platform suggest we will still see some deals close in a matter of days. That’s a good thing considering over 60 films are coming into this year’s Sundance looking for homes. As we previously reported, the hope is that even more distributors could get creative.
Below we’ll update all the acquisitions out of the festival as they arrive. Here are the movies we think could sell big.

Sundance is a place for discovery, where new stars are minted because of the fresh, invigorating images they bring to the screen. It was where Steven Soderbergh helped kick off the indie film revolution in 1989 with “sex, lies, and videotape” and Quentin Tarantino launched “Reservoir Dogs” in 1992. They showed that, at Sundance, if you have something to say, you can have a seat at the table.
This year, that daring new voice belongs to Eva Victor, whose comedic character study “Sorry, Baby,” about a young professor reeling from a trauma, sold to A24 for $8 million. “Sorry, Baby” also has the distinction of placing first in many of the categories in IndieWire’s 2025 Sundance Critics Survey, including Best Performance (for Victor herself), Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best First Film, and Best Film itself.

“Peter Hujar’s Day,” which premiered at this year’s Sundance, has sold to Sideshow and Janus Films. It’s one of the few projects to land a buyer out of the festival so far.
Written and directed by Ira Sachs, “Peter Hujar’s Day” is set over a 24-hour period in December 1974 and centers on one conversation between photographer Peter Hujar (Ben Whishaw) and his close friend, writer Linda Rosenkrantz (Rebecca Hall), who recorded their talk for an art project. Hujar, who died of AIDS in 1987, only became celebrated as an artist after his death.
The film debuted in Park City to positive reviews, with Variety’s Owen Gleiberman calling it a “magical 1974 time capsule of a movie.” In his review, he wrote that “in its tiny-scaled staged-documentary way, ‘Peter Hujar’s Day’ is exquisitely done and arresting to watch.”

The beloved Paddington Bear franchise continues its international success with the third installment, “Paddington in Peru,” approaching the $100 million mark in overseas ticket sales. “Paddington in Peru,” the third tale about the marmalade-loving bear, is nearing the $100 million milestone at the international box office.
The film, which doesn’t open in the U.S. and Canada until Feb. 14, has collected $93.2 million from 51 overseas territories. Ira Sachs’s Peter Hujar’s Day is crafted out of just a tiny sliver of a fragment of New York’s mid-1970s culture scene. As part of a larger project, well-connected autofiction writer Linda Rosenkrantz asked her friend, photographer Peter Hujar, to come by her Yorkville apartment on December 19, 1974 and describe everything he did over the course of one day while she recorded him. Though she meant it to be a larger project, she was never able to make the recording into anything. But the written transcript of their conversation was discovered in 2019 and turned by Sachs into an engrossingly personal two-hander.
Peter Hujar’s Day simply consists of Hujar (Ben Whishaw) talking about his day and Rosenkrantz (Rebecca Hall) gently nudging him along, less as an interviewer and more as a curious friend. The only times that Sachs deviates from his formalist framing of this conversation is...

The Alabama Solution
Relying heavily on footage shot by inmates on prohibited cellphones, Andrew Jarecki and Charlotte Kaufman’s powerful and gripping documentary isn’t an easy watch, but it’s a crucial one. The film’s focus is on corruption and abuses of power specific to Alabama’s prisons — and the heroism of the men who have found ways to evolve within a system that has no interest in participating in their rehabilitation and denies their basic humanity in every way. — Daniel Fienberg
Blknws: Terms & Conditions
Before his death in 1963, scholar W.E.B. Du Bois spent decades trying to publish an encyclopedia about people of African descent. That mission propels Kahlil Joseph’s hypnotic debut feature — a kinetic video essay blending Afro-futurist narrative, archival footage and memoir — that’s like an index of Black culture from the past 50 years. Joseph animates the fictional story of a journalist reporting on a transatlantic curatorial project with voiceover,...

Hot off their Academy Award nomination for Adapted Screenplay for Sing Sing, writing duo Clint Bentley and Greg Kwedar are already premiering their next film, Train Dreams, this time with Bentley in the director’s chair. Although this literary film has some astounding visuals and impressive performances, it lacks the emotional resonance that one expects from the duo.
Train Dreams Review
Train Dreams is adapted from the novella of the same name by Denis Johnson, following a logger who works for the railroad as he drifts through life, experiencing love, loss, and progress. Although the novella was published in the early 2000s, it has the feel of the “Great American Novel” — a character-driven approach to life in the rustic America of the 20th century. And while Bentley and Kwedar may seem to be the perfect pair to approach such material on paper, it doesn’t quite translate as well as one would hope.

Recent years have seen many filmmakers take a less linear approach to the biopic, inviting audiences to learn more about the subject than a superficial understanding of their life events. Ira Sachs’s latest film, Peter Hujar’s Day, takes the slice-of-life genre to its extreme, delivering an experimental work that many may dismiss as uneventful but has many fascinating layers to unpack. In taking this unorthodox approach, Sachs helps audiences know more about Hujar and the world in which he worked than any simple biopic could.
Peter Hujar’s Day Review
Peter Hujar’s Day is, as the title implies, a narration of a day in the life of Peter Hujar, a gay portrait photographer who has recently become acclaimed for being the seminal figure he was despite the lack of recognition he received at the time. And because of this, the film — like its subject — is incredibly humble and minimalistic in nature,...

Among the features premiering this year at the Sundance Film Festival, there are none — on paper — simpler than Ira Sachs’s Peter Hujar’s Day. Arriving just two years after he premiered his Passages at the festival, Sachs reunites with actor Ben Whishaw for a picture that’s one 76-minute dialogue between two friends in a New York apartment in 1974. What’s more, that dialogue is not some dramatically sculptured theatrical two-hander building to third act epiphanies but, rather, a transcription of an actual conversation between art photographer Hujar and artist Linda Rosenkrantz, who was conducting interviews for a book in […]

With all good news, there's usually a bit of bad news, too. Netflix unveiled the new and returning shows coming throughout 2025, and while it's exciting to learn that shows like Stranger Things, Wednesday, Emily in Paris, Nobody Wants This, and more will be back this year, there's also a catch. Some of our favorite shows were sadly missing from that list.
On Wednesday, Jan. 30, Netflix closed out the first month of 2025 by giving fans a glimpse at the shows they can look forward to later this year. While some fan-favorites like Ginny & Georgia and Squid Game received June release dates for their respective third seasons, plenty of other established hit series were also included on the list to make comebacks in 2025.
Unfortunately, not every Netflix show fans love will be able to wrap up filming in time to be released later this year. We already had an inkling that some of these shows,...

When I look at Peter Hujar’s portrait of poet Allen Ginsburg, taken on December 18, 1974, it’s strikingly nonchalant. Ginsberg is standing on the sidewalk, one hand in pocket and the other looped through the straps of a bag draped on his shoulder. He’s looking right down the barrel of the lens with an “okay, you’re taking my picture” expression on his face. Ginsberg is perhaps the most recognizable name to come out of the beat generation of poets but he looks like he could be anybody––he could be your buddy Carl. It was taken for the New York Times but certainly doesn’t have the gloss and sophistication of celebrity portraits we see in major publications today. The austere street beside him is on the Lower East Side, a neighborhood now flooded with tourists, boutiques, and banality. Just as Hujar’s photo is indicative of an...

There are some absolute monsters of shows that fans are waiting to hear more news about. The main news we all want is, of course, when we will see new seasons for some top shows. Netflix has just unveiled plans for their 2025 series plans, but what they haven't said is as important as what they did tell us.
Of course, we’ll all be glad to hear there are new seasons this year for the likes of Wednesday, Squid Games, and Emily in Paris, plus a whole load more. You’ll hear all the information we know about them here on Netflix Life for sure. But when you see the new list of 2025 shows it’ll leave you asking one big question.
‘What about..[insert here some of your favorites that aren't on that list]?’ That's where what Netflix hasn't said comes into play. As a general rule, it means if a series isn't on the Netflix 2025 list then we’ll...

“Peter Hujar’s Day” is one of those films whose title is almost humorously straightforward, yet only gives a hint of what the experience of watching it is actually like. While true that it is about a day in the life of the late photographer Peter Hujar (Ben Whishaw) that he recounts to his close friend Linda Rosenkrantz (Rebecca Hall) in mundane, expansive detail for a book that notably never came to be, it becomes about a moment in time, their place in it, and his anxieties as an artist. Handsomely shot by cinematographer Alex Ashe, whose richly textured visuals make it entrancing to watch even when little is happening, it’s a film about both everything and nothing as Whishaw literally just tells a story to the camera for the entire runtime.

Ira Sachs’ latest film “Peter Hujar’s Day” is a fascinating experiment and historical document, and in speaking at the IndieWire Studio, presented by Dropbox, he said it “kept me up at night” trying to figure out how to make it cinematically interesting.
The film, a tight 75 minutes, is a filmed recreation of a conversation between famed New York photographer Peter Hujar and his friend and journalist Linda Rosenkrantz from 1974 in which he describes a day in his life in NYC’s downtown art scene. He discusses chats with Susan Sontag and photographing Allen Ginsberg, and all of it was recorded as part of a transcript that was unearthed just in 2024, 50 years after the conversation first happened.
With only two people talking, Sachs had to find a way to make the dialogue “suspenseful, emotional, not boring,” which he called an “interesting challenge.”

We have some bad news about Black Doves season 2 to share, courtesy of Ben Whishaw, the star of the Netflix original series.
In an interview with Collider, Whishaw, who plays Sam, revealed that not only has production not started yet but it's "six or seven months" away from starting. In addition, Whishaw said that the scripts for Black Doves season 2 haven't even been finished yet.
Here's what Whishaw told Collider about Black Doves season 2:
"It hasn't been written, so I actually can say nothing. I know nothing about it. That's boring, isn't it? You're not interested in that, but it’s the truth. It's not written. It's six months, or seven months away, or something."
So, that is not very good news at all about the new season.
