Anders Lund (Þorsteinn Bachmann), the founder and director of the base, is a ghastly sight. His amputation stitches are still fresh. The one hand he has remaining is black and blue. Burn marks cover his face, which makes his frosted blue eyes all the more unsettling.

Built around a down-tempo beat, “The Fight” is colored by an ethereal synth soundscape of hazy chords and glistening counter-melodies. Apple TV+’s adaptation of Victor Lavelle’s bestselling book “The Changeling” is debuts on the streamer this Friday. The eight-part drama, which Stanfield stars in and executive produces, will drop the first three episodes of the series on Friday, Sept. 8. The pilot episode was directed by “Queen & Slim” director Melina Matsoukas.

They followed the Christian Socialist preacher and faith healer to Guyana, where he worked to establish a remote jungle commune, only to find their dreams of creating a religious paradise devolve into an abusive nightmare.

While fully aware of Japan’s Ghost in the Shell and its impact as a Manga and Anime, I never experienced any version of it. As a result, I watched the recent live-action film version without preconceived notions. I knew all about the casting controversy but until there’s an actress of Japanese descent who can open a movie wide, casting decisions, such as this, will continue. So get over it.

Masamune Shirow created an interesting meditation on where humanity is going as he, like Ray Kurzweil, foresees the day when man and machine blend into a singular being. It won’t be overnight, nor will it be neat and easy. A film about an outrageous hoax, based on a true story as told in a book written by the perpetrator of said hoax. With so many layers of reality between the actual events and their onscreen translation, should we assume everything in 2007’s The Hoax is accurate?

Perhaps the more important question is: does it matter?

My feeling is that a film’s first prerogative is to entertain. In any adaptation (whether from real life or another medium of fiction) concessions will be made to the necessity of visual drama. Now that Disney has settled on Colin Farrell to replace Will Smith in Dumbo, the studio is setting their sights on another actor to play the primary villain. Rupert Sanders’ Ghost In The Shell live-actioner dawns with universal promise. Rainbow-colored building exteriors erect a neon-laced megacity (once again New Port City). Scarlett Johansson bursts through plate-glass and bullet-times the shit out of some mecha-Geishas. We haven’t yet endured a barrage of slaps to foreign culture and racial appropriation. Yes, Sanders lives in better times for the first few minutes of his synthetic-assassin tranquilizer – then it’s like an aesthetic “Abort” button is smashed. Dark nights negate any 3D usefulness, drowning skyscraper-tall advertisement holograms and eye-catching beautification. Life fleets, pacing tumbles and the whole thing begins to feel like a legless cyborg crawling out of futility.

Oh, and to those who cried whitewashing? Oh man. You guys are gonna be Sooooo pissed. Especially after all the marketing attempts to assure otherwise. Anywho…

Ghost in the Shell is visually astonishing. Director Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman) has crafted a special effects wonder that will melt your eyeballs. If only the plot was on par with the technical achievement. Unfortunately, it is rote and predictable. But the film is so engrossing to see, the mediocrity of the narrative is not a deal killer. I am unfamiliar with the source material, so can't say how faithful this adaptation is. I hope audiences will appreciate the film as a first rate cinematic experience that stands apart from previous incarnations.

Ever since a western remake of Akira was tentatively announced more than a decade ago, Hollywood studios have been trying to crack the anime scene. Oscar Isaac has signed on to star in “The Garbo Network,” a double agent thriller set during World War II. Isaac will also be one of the film’s producers, alongside Bob Cooper, Richard Saperstein, Chuck Weinstock and Jason Spire. The script was written by William Wheeler (“The Hoax,” “Ray Donovan”).

“There are very few actors who can do both pathos and comic grandiosity. Oscar is one of them, and we feel very lucky to have him,” said Weinstock in a statement.

Bob Cooper and Richard Saperstein’s Los Angeles-based production company has unveiled details of its Second World War double agent thriller.

Isaac will portray Juan Pujol Garcia, a man who without any special training managed to persuade the Germans and the British to hire him as a spy and won gallantry medals from both sides.

in reality his allegiance lay with MI5 and through a fake network of agents Garcia helped the British fool the Germans about the June 1944 Normandy landings, a critical juncture in the war.

William Wheeler wrote the screenplay and Cooper, Saperstein, Chuck Weinstock, Jason Spire, and Isaac will produce.

“Juan Pujol Garcia is unlike any character we’ve seen on film – he’s a chameleon and a master manipulator, deeply haunted by his past, with an unreadable agenda… and his actions have world-changing consequences,” said Cooper, who is attending Berlin for the screening of Maudie and will discuss the project with buyers.

William Wheeler wrote the script, which is based on the true story of Juan Pujol Garcia, an eccentric double-agent who, with no military or covert training, somehow persuaded both the Germans and the British to hire him as a spy. As it turned out, his real allegiance was to England, and working closely with Mi-5, he created a fictional network of 27 spies said to be spread out over England, Scotland and Ireland, supplying him with critical information about British troop movements and military planning....

Disney’s “Queen of Katwe” is based on the vibrant true story of Phiona Mutesi, a young girl from the streets of Kampala, Uganda whose world rapidly changes when she is introduced to the game of chess by soccer coach and former missionary Robert Katende, and, as a result of the support she receives from her family and community, is instilled with the confidence and determination she needs to pursue her dream of becoming an International chess champion.

Twenty-eight years ago, we discovered the world of street children within the harsh, raw, underbelly of Delhi. Yet, it was a life these children had chosen in preference to home and family – which had obviously become entirely intolerable.
