In the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Conspiracy", the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise-d find that a mysterious species of intelligent brain parasites has infiltrated Starfleet. The parasites look like pink-shelled stag beetles and enter a host's body through their mouth. Once inside, the parasites completely take over their host's brains, using their bodies like puppets. Multiple higher-ups at Starfleet Command had been taken over, with the queen parasite inhabiting the body of a character named Lieutenant Commander Remmick (Robert Schenkkan).
Luckily, Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) and Commander Riker (Jonathan Frakes) figure out the conspiracy and use clever disguises to sneak into a secret dinner party attended only by infected officers. Picard and Riker get the drop on everyone, thank goodness, and begin firing their phasers. Everyone is knocked out and the parasites exit their bodies.

If I may start with a personal, somewhat braggadocious anecdote, I personally visited the sets of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" back in 1993, when I was still in high school, and my "Star Trek" fandom was riding at its most intense. I was instructed to touch nothing, and I didn't -- I also wasn't allowed to sit in Captain Picard's chair, which was a bummer -- but I was permitted to look as closely at the computer panels and walls as I wanted.
Close inspection revealed a raft of teeny-tiny in-jokes that would never appear on camera, clearly designed by crew members and set designers to keep themselves amused while assembling the series. One might know that the wall panels of the U.S.S. Enterprise-d sport small, brown oval shapes indicating what might be behind that panel. In reality, those ovals contain little...

Partway through Jonathan Frakes' 1996 sci-fi film "Star Trek: First Contact," the android Data (Brent Spiner) is kidnapped by the Borg, a species of calculating cyborgs that has infiltrated the U.S.S. Enterprise-e. The Borg are known for assimilating technology and individuals into their dark collective, rewiring people's brains to serve as soldier-like meat-bots for the cause of further assimilation. Typically, the Borg will insert machinery and tubing into a victim's body, maybe replace an eye with a mechanical eyepiece, and sometimes even remove hands to install tools and widgets into people's arm-holes. It seems that the Borg requires their drones to possess an organic compound, otherwise the machinery won't work.
For Data, however, assimilation has to move in the opposite direction. Data, an android, is already 100% artificial, only possessing the smallest amount of organic compounds. In order to assimilate him, the Borg Queen (Alice Krige) removes portions of Data's...

In the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Datalore", the Enterprise-d is called to a distant colony where the android Data (Brent Spiner) was found years earlier. When Data was first discovered, he had no memories, although he knew he was constructed by a rogue genius named Dr. Noonien Soong. Soong was blackballed from the scientific community many decades earlier and had to retire to a distant colony to continue his work. Back when Data was discovered, by a starship called the U.S.S. Tripoli, the colony had been destroyed and Soong was missing, presumed dead. Data had no memories of what happened.
In "Datalore," the Enterprise found something else surviving among the rubble. Pieces of a second android, identical to Data, were found in a previously sealed area. Data and the Enterprise engineers reassemble it and find that it is Lore (also Spiner), another Soong android. Lore, unlike Data,...

Actor Brent Spiner played the fan-favorite Data in Star Trek: The Next Generation. The actor played the android second-in-command of the USS Enterprise-d in the legendary show and also reprised his role in the new generation series Star Trek: Picard. Spiner, along with the original cast, went on to appear in four films based on Tng.
Spiner also played many of the alternate versions of Data in the show, including Sherlock Holmes in the classic ‘Elementary, My Dear Data’ episode. He also played his evil twin Lore and his creator Dr. Noonien Soong, which Spiner mentioned was his most terrifying role in the universe. He mentioned that he convinced the makers to play the role despite another actor being cast.

In the second season of "Star Trek: The Next Generation," Trekkies were introduced to a memorable minor character named Ensign Sonya Gomez, played by actress Lycia Naff. Ensign Gomez first appeared in "Q Who", the first episode to feature the Borg. She conversed briefly with Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton) about how excited she was to be serving on the U.S.S. Enterprise-d before accidentally spilling her drink on Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart). Ensign Gomez appeared again in the following episode, "Samaritan Snare", the episode to first feature the Pakled. In a fun development, Lycia Naff would return to play Gomez in an episode of "Star Trek: Lower Decks" called "First First Contact" wherein she had risen to the rank of captain.

In the "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episode "Sanctuary", the station is visited by a previously-unseen species called the Skrreeans, appearing out of the nearby wormhole to the Gamma Quadrant. The Skrreeans have trouble communicating at first, as the station's universal translator can't get a handle on their language. Eventually, the translator kicks in, and a woman named Haneek (Deborah May) steps forward to speak for the Skrreeans. She explains that their species was recently conquered by the military force of T-Rogorans and kept under military occupation for years. It wasn't until the T-Rogorans were conquered by an even more powerful military — the Dominion — that they were freed. Now the Skrreeans wander the galaxy, lost and homeless, looking for a new homeworld.
At first Major Kira (Nana Visitor) seems amenable to the idea of the Skrreeans settling on her nearby home planet of Bajor ... until she learns that there are millions of them.

In the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Identity Crisis", Lieutenant Commander Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton) meets an old friend, Lieutenant Commander Susanna Leijten (Maryann Plunkett), the only surviving member of a mission they both went on years before. It seems that their compatriots have gone missing or stolen shuttlecrafts to return to the planet Tarchannen III, where they were last united. Soon after her arrival, Leijten also begins exhibiting weird behavior, twitching nervously and demanding a visit to Tarchannen III. Her body begins to mutate. Her fingers fuse together and eerie blue veins appear on her skin. Her eyes turn yellow. It's all Dr. Crusher (Gates McFadden) can do to slow the mutations.
Geordi, while unattended, also suddenly begins to mutate. He eventually returns to Tarchannen III, having turned into a near-invisible creature that can only be seen under a special blacklight. Leijten has to overcome her own...

On the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Genesis", the eternally nervous Lieutenant Reginald Barclay (Dwight Schultz) goes to sickbay insisting he has Terellian Death Syndrome. Dr. Crusher (Gates McFadden), finding it's a mild flu, injects him with a synthetic T-cell, activating a gene that would provide him with immunities. Unwittingly, Dr. Crusher also activates every dormant gene in Barclay's body, causing ancient, pre-evolutionary "memory" genes to activate and forcing Barclay to change species. Barclay suddenly evolves into a spider. It spreads, naturally. Nurse Ogawa (Patti Yasutake) evolves into an ape. Commander Riker (Jonathan Frakes) evolves into a protohuman. Data (Brent Spiner) evolves into a 1980 Commodore Vic-20.

"Star Trek" is notoriously good to its actors. If a hard-working performer gets a small gig in one episode of "Star Trek," it becomes incredibly likely they'll be invited back for another. Armin Shimerman, for instance, played a talking treasure chest and a random Ferengi character on "Star Trek: The Next Generation" years before he was offered the main role of Quark on "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine." Likewise, Tim Russ played a terrorist on the "Next Generation" episode "Starship Mine" before he became Tuvok on "Star Trek: Voyager." There are dozens of other examples. Once you're in the "Star Trek" family, you'll be a part of it for life.
According to the book "Star Trek: The Next Generation 365," by Paula M. Block and Terry J. Erdmann, actress Famke Janssen was offered a venerated spot in the Trek family ... that she turned down. Janssen appeared in the episode "The Perfect Mate" as Kamala,...

The Trill were first introduced in the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "The Host". In that episode, Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden) engaged in an intense love affair with a Trill super-diplomat named Odan (Franc Luz), a man whom she later discovered had a very unusual biology. It seems some members of the Trill species are joined with incredibly long-lived worm-like symbionts that are surgically implanted in their stomachs. The symbionts possess the memories and experiences of all their hosts and take over the personalities of the people they are implanted inside of. Symbionts can live through dozens of hosts in their lives.
In "The Host," Odan sported inverted v-shaped forehead ridges above his eyes and a larger, extended septum. The makeup was designed by Michael Westmore, a longtime "Next Generation" makeup artist.
It wouldn't be until "Emissary", the pilot episode of "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," that Trekkies would encounter another Trill.

"Star Trek: The Next Generation" famously struggled creatively during its first season. The inaugural villains, the Ferengi, flopped (to the point actor Armin Shimmerman felt the need to repair their reputation when he returned to play Quark on the spin-off "Deep Space Nine"). So, the writers dug up some old foes with a storied history -- the Romulans. The Romulans returned in the season 1 finale, "The Neutral Zone," and became enduring enemies of the Enterprise-d.
The Romulans were once Vulcans but split off centuries ago after rejecting the path of logic and serenity. As a result, the Romulans share most of their cousins' physical features, such as pointed ears. In "Reunification," a two-part episode in "The Next Generation" season 5, Spock (Leonard Nimoy guest-starring) is working on Romulus to bring the Romulans and his people back together.

The first appearance of the Romulans on "Star Trek" came in the episode "Balance of Terror", wherein the U.S.S. Enterprise faced off against a mysterious Romulan Bird-of-Prey. It was said in the episode that the Federation and the Romulans had previously fought a war, but, thanks to primitive communication technology, had never laid eyes on each other. After managing to hack into the Romulan computers, the crew of the Enterprise was able to spy on their enemies for the first time, finding that they looked a lot like Vulcans. The Romulan Commander (Mark Lenard) merely sported angled eyebrows and pointed ears, very much like Spock (Leonard Nimoy).
In a later episode called "The Enterprise Incident", Kirk (William Shatner) and Spock find themselves on board a Romulan Bird-of-Prey facing off against a new Romulan Commander (Joanne Linville). It was the first time a human and a Romulan were depicted in the same room face-to-face.

The Rocky and Creed film series may have been the only projects where Sylvester Stallone and the late legend Carl Weathers got to share the screen together, but the pair’s personal relationship was much greater than that.

The story of an underdog having a huge dream and working hard to achieve it connected with people and the franchise has become a beloved one over the years. Here lies Thomas Eugene Paris, beloved mutant. That’s what Trekkies think about every Jan. 29, known among some as “Threshold Day,” commemorating the 1996 airing of the Star Trek: Voyager season two episode “Threshold.” Threshold Day consists mostly of memes and jokes, poking fun at what most consider one of the series’ worst episodes, if not one of the most embarrassing Star Trek episodes of all time.
While it is certainly corny, “Threshold” doesn’t quite deserve its ignoble reputation. Not only is it far from the worst episode of Voyager (Chakotay’s ancestors’ bones play no part in the story), but it contains a lot of qualities found in the best Star Trek episodes. Is that enough to elevate “Threshold” to the upper Trek tiers? No, but it is enough to give the episode a better reputation than the one it has now.

The third and final season of Paramount+’s “Star Trek: Picard” provided a lot of pleasure for diehard “Star Trek” fans, who were appropriately delighted to see Patrick Stewart‘s title character reunited with the crew of the USS Enterprise from “Star Trek: The Next Generation.” The show’s Emmy-nominated make-up artists are fans too and saw it as their responsibility to pay tribute to the past while finding new ways of presenting the characters for 2023. “We have to be conscious of what’s happened in the past and elevate it,” prosthetics department head James MacKinnon told IndieWire. “We’re paying homage to what Mike Westmore did [on earlier shows like ‘Tng,’ ‘Deep Space Nine,’ and ‘Enterprise’] and then using the next level in technology, like ZBrush [digital sculpting software] and 3D printed pieces that now go on prosthetics or that you use in the molding process, which saves so much time.”
