Carrie-Anne Moss has no regrets about choosing to focus on motherhood over her career.
During a recent interview with The Independent, the actress opened up about her reasoning for turning down big movie deals at the height of her career, when The Matrix franchise was skyrocketing.
“After The Matrix was such a big deal, I took a big, big break to have children and be with them,” Moss explained. “I remember being torn, having a little twinge like, ‘Gosh, I’m getting offered such great things. That would be such a huge deal.'”
She continued, “And I was holding my baby in my arms, and I remember thinking, ‘At the end of my life, will it matter to me that I have another movie on my résumé? Or will it matter to me that I held my baby?’ And I instantly thought, no. It was just a no-brainer. And...

What was Jada Pinkett Smith’s condition about working in The Matrix Reloaded? (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Jada Pinkett Smith not only gets recognized as Will Smith’s wife but also as a multi-hyphenated star. She started as an actress, moved on to the music industry, tried her hands as a talk show host, and so on and so forth. However, it was reported that Jada wanted to join The Matrix franchise in the very first film and even auditioned for Trinity’s role. On the other hand, Will Smith was offered to play Neo’s role. However, it didn’t work out and Trinity’s role went to Carrie-Ann Moss.
But the actress became a part of the franchise as she joined ‘The Matrix Reloaded’ as Niobe. Yes, that’s right. She then went on to feature in the sequels, The Matrix Revolution and The Matrix Resurrections. But, did you know before she said yes,...

Quick LinksWill Smith Gets His Chance to Play Neo... Sort OfKeanu Reeves Was the Best Choice for 'The Matrix'
Nearly three decades ago, The Matrix made its mark on the science fiction genre, utilizing groundbreaking special effects and storytelling that had moral and philosophical depth. The modern sci-fi classic would also become a defining role for beloved actor Keanu Reeves, with his bullet dodging skills and surprise at learning Karate becoming integrated into '90s pop culture. Yet, the film franchise could have had a different famous face attached to the project, as infamously, Will Smith turned down the role to instead appear in the box office bomb Wild Wild West (at least he got that one catchy single out of it).
While the lore of Smith's disastrous career choice was not enough to derail his career, the actor appears to have recently reflected on the missed opportunity.

Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight series is the golden standard when it comes to modern superhero movies and trilogies. The two-time Oscar-winning director gave a series of Batman movies that offered deep narrative, realism, and character development.
He gave the audience the chance to witness a killer performance by Heath Ledger, bringing life to a chaotic character like the Joker, and making Batman more than just a man in a cape. The trilogy highlights Bruce Wayne’s emotional toll as he grapples with loss, betrayal, and the challenge of juggling his life as a billionaire by day and a vigilante by night.

2003’s overlooked animated anthology movie The Animatrix only added to the legend of Carrie-Anne Moss’ character Trinity established by the live-action Matrix films. Written and produced by The Wachowskis for online release immediately after The Matrix Reloaded and before The Matrix Revolutions, The Animatrix features nine non-chronological animated shorts directed by some of the franchise creators’ favorite anime filmmakers.
Two of the shorts, in particular, focus on Trinity’s backstory, making her even cooler than when she appeared on the big screen in the original live-action Matrix trilogy. “A Detective Story” serves up the kind of coded messages and escapology the feature films lead you to expect from Trinity. Her minor role in “Kid’s Story”, meanwhile, portrays her hero status almost on a par with Neo.

Last April, we heard the exciting news: Drew Goddard, known for The Martian and The Cabin in the Woods, was chosen to direct a new Matrix film for Warner Bros. Discovery. Fans have speculated about a reboot or spin-off for years, and this project might finally deliver.
The original Matrix movie, released in 1999, was a massive hit. Its sequels, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, both came out in 2003 but didn’t capture the same enthusiasm. In 2021, Lana Wachowski returned (without Lilly) to direct The Matrix Resurrections, but it also struggled with fans.
We still don’t know if original stars like Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Laurence Fishburne, or Hugo Weaving will join this new venture. However, a rumor from @MyTimeToShineH (via the Sff Gazette) suggests that Ariana Grande could be one of the leads in Goddard’s Matrix. This would be a big leap for Grande, especially after her praised role in Wicked.

Sci-fi movies are renowned for their incredible world-building. It isn’t uncommon for them to rely on a strong premise and striking aesthetics while delivering endings that resolve the conflict in a less-than-impressive manner. However, the best Sci-Fi movies feature endings that are thoughtfully crafted and thought-provoking, rather than feeling tacked on.
Due to the genre's ability to engage our imagination, the finest Sci-Fi endings often leave us pondering long after the credits roll. These brilliant conclusions can be ambiguous in meaning, or the intricately designed universes are so compelling that audiences can't stop speculating about the countless interactions and events that might unfold beyond the main plot.

Will Smith shockingly passed on the leading role in The Matrix, which completely changed both the franchise and his career. Smith was offered the role of Neo in The Matrix before Keanu Reeves. By that point in his career, some of Will Smith's best movies, such as Bad Boys, Independence Day, and Men in Black, had already been released. Therefore, he had already established himself as a movie star. Additionally, Smith had proven that he had an interest in the science fiction genre, which would have made him a perfect leading man for The Matrix movies.
The story of the first Matrix movie follows Neo, who discovers that humanity is trapped inside the Matrix, a simulated reality that was created by intelligent machines. Lily and Lana Wachowski, the writers and directors of the first Matrix movie, offered the role of Neo to Smith. Smith accepting the role of Neo would have completely changed his career,...

Lost became an instant hit when the series debuted on ABC in 2004. Over two decades later, one of the show's writers, Drew Goddard, addressed the possibility of revisiting the franchise.
Speaking to Variety, Goddard said that while there have been no official discussions about a revival, he will never rule out the possibility. "I loved working on that show so much, and I loved what we did," he explained. "I always feel strongly that I don't want to just do karaoke of the show I used to do. I'd only be interested if we felt like we could do something special and new within the construct of the show. And then some of it just comes down to time and appetite. So there's no plan for it today. But never say never."

It's been nearly a year since we first learned of plans for Drew Goddard to write and direct a new Matrix movie. Rumours of a reboot or spin-off have persisted for years (the prequel starring Michael B. Jordan as a young Morpheus never came to fruition) but we've heard very little about this effort since it was announced by Warner Bros. Discovery.
Goddard, best known for writing The Martian and directing The Cabin in the Woods (he also worked on Netflix's Daredevil and the unmade Sinister Six movie for Sony Pictures), will have a helping hand from franchise co-creator Lana Wachowski who has boarded the project as an executive producer.

A new report has poured cold water on the speculation that King Richard and Bad Boys: Ride or Die star Will Smith is involved with the next Matrix movie. The actor famously turned down the chance to play the lead character Neo in the original 1999 The Matrix film, with the role eventually going to Keanu Reeves.

Will Smith has taken to social media to obliquely suggest that he might be starring in The Matrix 5 – 25 years after turning the original film down.
Will Smith famously turned down the chance to star as Neo in the original trilogy of Matrix films which began in 1999. The Matrix was a mind-bending cyberpunk adventure that would eventually star Keanu Reeves instead, becoming an all-time classic. While the sequels may not have lived up to the promise of that first film, The Matrix endures, and Smith’s decision to appear instead in Wild Wild West goes down as one of those legendary career missteps.
Of course, Smith is no stranger to career missteps, having committed perhaps the most high-profile one of that last couple of decades. His career is still recovering from that Oscars slap, but last year’s Bad Boys: Ride Or Die seemed to prove that audiences are more than...

It is a widespread belief among fans and critics that actors do not choose roles rather the role chooses the actor. In the history of the film industry, there have been several iconic roles, but Keanu Reeves’ portrayal of Neo in The Matrix will always occupy a special place in popular culture.

A role that not only propelled him to the forefront of Hollywood but also made him famous across the world, today, it is hard to imagine anyone else as the titular character. However, he recently teased starring in such a film, sending shockwaves across The Matrix fandom.

Over 25 years since he turned down the role of Neo to instead star in Wild Wild West, Will Smith may be about to enter The Matrix at last. The King Richard Oscar winner shared a cryptic Instagram post today teasing that he'll be starring in an upcoming new movie from the sci-fi franchise. Nothing has been officially confirmed yet, but it indicates that he'll have a major role to play in the previously announced Matrix 5, which is currently in development with Lana Wachowski serving as an executive producer and Drew Goddard set to direct.

Once upon a time, in 1997 to be exact, Will Smith was offered the lead role in The Matrix, a game-changing sci-fi film that has influenced countless others in the genre. Keanu Reeves went on to portray the iconic character Neo in all four installments of the movie franchise from the Wachowskis. However, could The Matrix make its way back onto the big screen, this time starring Smith? Well, many fans think the actor is teasing just that in his latest social media post.
Smith went to Instagram to tease a Matrix collaboration by posting a video that reveals how he rejected the original 1999 film and asks what could have been. For better or worse, the cryptic tease is as secretive as it is confusing. It's unclear if the Bad Boys star intends to reveal that he is joining the long-standing franchise in a new film, or if another kind of...

Now that The Matrix 5 is confirmed to be in the works, it’s the perfect time for another animated spinoff movie in the style of The Animatrix. In April 2024, Warner Bros. officially announced that The Matrix 5 was in development. The studio was impressed by a pitch from The Cabin in the Woods’ Drew Goddard, who’s attached to write and direct the new movie. This will be the first Matrix movie not to be directed by either of the Wachowski sisters, although Lana Wachowski is on board as an executive producer, so she’ll help guide the vision.
There’s no word yet on whether Keanu Reeves will reprise his role as Neo in The Matrix 5, but The Matrix saga will continue on the big screen in some form. Whether it’s a direct continuation of the main storyline or a spinoff following a new cast of Matrix characters, there...

Actor Aml Ameen left Sense8 before season 2, and thanks to his performance in the show's first volume many wonder why Capheus was recast. The Wachowski sisters (The Matrix) created Sense8, which follows 8 strangers from different countries and cultures who come to realize they have a psychic connection and can share emotions, knowledge, and skills with one another. They belong to a rare breed of human beings known as “sensates,” but their shared connection soon leads to them being hunted down by shadowy forces.
Capheus, an African bus driver inspired by martial arts movies, was one of the most likable members of the core sensate group. It was announced prior to the arrival of Sense8 season 2 that Aml Ameen, who played Capheus, quit the show and would be replaced by Toby Onwumere. Jennifer Tilly, the Oscar-nominated actor who has worked in Hollywood alongside visionary and auteur filmmakers including The Wachowskis, Woody Allen and Terry Gilliam, who for decades lent her voice to long-running franchises, all while moonlighting at the top poker tables and taking on the game’s best gamblers to become a world champion player, is now immersed in the most challenging gig in her 30-plus year career: a supporting role on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.

The legacy sequel has become one of the most profitable and prolific sub-genres in recent movie history, banking on audience nostalgia and a perfect screenplay to add to the lore of a classic franchise. The best legacy sequels provide a measure of closure or a deepening of the themes of the original work, adding something to a beloved film rather than detracting from what made the first entries so special. Films like Blade Runner 2049, Mad Max: Fury Road and Creed deepen the meaning of the original film while adding their own characters and stylistic flair that help them stand on their own.
The Matrix Resurrections was unsuccessful upon its release at the end of 2021, bombing at the box office when put up against the much more crowd-pleasingly nostalgic Spider-Man: No Way Home. The film also left many critics and audience members who did see it perplexed, assuming that the...

Was a Beetlejuice sequel on your 2024 bingo card? Did anyone honestly expect it to manifest some 36 years later out of the blue? The original grossed only $74 million in 1988, though it immediately established Tim Burton as a visionary filmmaker and set the stage for his teaming with Michael Keaton in not just one, but two massively successful Batman movies. Keaton has recently reprised both these iconic roles in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and Batgirl, but to radically different fates. Thus, it’s no surprise that a soulless corporate entity like Warner Brothers Discovery would be inclined to milk every ounce of IP in its portfolio for all it’s worth, especially if you’ll recall Lana Wachowski’s subversive involvement in The Matrix Resurrections. Still, this same company also deleted the completed Batgirl movie as a tax write-off.

Several villains throughout the four The Matrix movies provide valuable insights despite their roles and actions, revealing the depth of their characters and creating thought-provoking scenes. The franchise is remembered for its otherworldly premise, thrilling action sequences, diverse themes, and complex characters, among other elements. Beginning with a remarkable start in 1999, the original The Matrix film established the Wachowskis as talented filmmakers, a legacy that continues beyond the original trilogy.
The ending of The Matrix trilogy delivers a satisfying resolution for both the plot and the characters' arcs; however, the premise presented in 2021's The Matrix Resurrections diminishes its effectiveness. Confirmation of The Matrix 5 earlier this year only supports sequel bait opinions presumably from the minds of the producing company, Warner Brothers, within the previous movie. However, regardless of the villain or film, the well-crafted script enhances the narrative with profound statements about the Matrix and the protagonists' actions.

If youve been enjoying frequent rewatches of The Matrix Resurrections on Netflix, prepare for a wake-up call. The sci-fi sequel will be leaving the streaming platform on December 1, meaning fans have only a short window to revisit Neo, Trinity, and the stunning visuals of this long-awaited addition to the Matrix franchise. The surprising sequel brought back Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss to their iconic roles, once more under the direction of Lana Wachowski, as it tackled Neo's place in a rebooted Matrix and once again explored the concepts of fate versus free will.

The first three Matrix films changed action movies forever and made characters like Neo, Trinity, and Morpheus pop culture icons. However, the fourth Matrix film was not as well received as the first three entries in the franchise. Therefore, The Matrix 5 needs to recapture the magic of the original. While not much is known about the upcoming fifth Matrix movie, Drew Goddard, who has previously written and directed films such as The Cabin in the Woods and Bad Times at the El Royale, will write and direct the film.
After the disappointing The Matrix Resurrections, the fifth Matrix film must successfully bring back the most important part of the series. While most would assume that the inclusion of Keanu Reeves' Neo is essential to the success of The Matrix 5, that is not the case. In actuality, The Matrix 5 simply needs to recapture the magic of the original three films by including outstanding action scenes.

The Matrix franchise star Carrie-Anne Moss has addressed The Matrix Resurrections making a Trinity fan theory canon, and her level of input in the twist. In the franchise's fourth installment, Neo (Keanu Reeves) is forced to re-learn about his past as the One, reuniting with familiar faces like Trinity (Moss) in his quest to stop a new threat. Near the climax of the movie The Matrix Resurrections retcons the One concept, making it so Trinity is also the One at the same time that Neo is. This confirmed a popular fan theory floating around long before the movie was made.
Speaking with Collider, Moss explained how she didn't have any direct input in the decision to make Trinity the One alongside Neo in The Matrix Resurrections. However, the actor explained it had nothing to do with a lack of interest in the theory, but rather the trust she wanted to...

Since the success of Richard Donner's Superman, Hollywood has increasingly turned to comic books for entertainment, climaxing with the rise of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While these movies typically focus on action, science fiction, and fantasy, there are plenty of great horror movies based on anything from superheroes to monsters. That said, a movie doesn't need to be horror to be scary, and many comic adaptations have looked to themes of dystopia and mystery to be scary.
Although not every great comic book movie is necessarily faithful to its source material, talented directors from all backgrounds have shown they can make a good story work. Writers and directors can play on a variety of fears, both grounded and fantastical, from creatures of the night to crime and fascism. While not every movie that strives to be scary succeeds, some are a masterclass in terror.

With a new Matrix film on the way from Warner Bros. and The Cabin in the Woods director Drew Goddard, it will be interesting to see what mind-bending twists the new sci-fi film will have in store. Goddard's work is known for its bold and inventive subversions of genre expectations Cabin in the Woods particularly, with its wittily inventive subversion of the slasher genre. Likewise, The Matrix franchise has always defined itself by its subversion of expectations and its revolutionary storylines, causing many viewers to question the reality of the film itself.

While speaking with Vanity Fair about how the film saved his career, he shared:

The amount of lead female roles in the 100 top-grossing films plunged to 30% in 2023, according to the latest findings by Dr. Stacy L. Smith and the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative.
The study’s authors said the level fell 14% against 2022 levels. It noted that little progress has been made in terms of speaking characters for girls or women, where levels reached 32% compared to 30% in 2007 when the study began.
