Mortal Kombat has always boasted in-depth fighting mechanics and impressive graphics (be it via painstakingly digitized actors or modern-day HD renders). That being said, there’s no doubt in my mind that the gnarly Fatalities were what really motivated Mortal Kombat‘s massive success.
These elaborate finishing moves were so violent that they become a source of controversy during the 90s, with politicians claiming that the simulated murder of Mortal Kombat was contributing to the “corruption of America’s youth”, with the game even becoming a catalyst for the creation of the Esrb. On the other hand, these bloody spectacles were also responsible for crowds forming around arcade cabinets as gamers anxiously awaited for comically exaggerated executions, leading to increasingly absurd fatalities in the sequels.

Where do monsters come from? Ask any young child and they are sure to tell you one of the places is underneath the bed. Director Steven C. Miller (Aggression Scale and 2013’s Silent Night) brings the monster out in Under The Bed, a film that boasts a hefty dose of 80′s nostalgia.
Neal (Jonny Weston), a young man with a haunted past, is returning to his suburban home town after a two year hiatus. A fire, which claimed the life of his mother, was reason for Neal’s departure. Upon his return, Neal is immediately protective of his younger brother Paulie (Gattlin Griffith) who is being tormented by a monster that lives under his bed. The two brothers, after being disregarded by their father (Peter Holden) and concerned new girlfriend (Musetta Vander), ban together to fight the monster that is slowly invading their lives.

*full disclosure: a DVD screener of this film was provided by XLrator Media. Director: Steven C. Miller. Writer: Eric Stolze. Cast: Jonny Weston, Gattlin Griffith, Peter Holden, Musetta Vander, and Kelcie Stranahan. This film fan has seen each of Steven C. Miller's films. From the zombie flick Automaton Transfusion (2006) to the witchy Scream of the Banshee (2011), Miller's horror films have been varied, especially in quality. His latest is a creature feature titled Under the Bed. This film was developed from Eric Stolze's (I Heart Shakey) script. And, this film is underdeveloped on several levels. Filmed over the course of twelve days, with a minuscule budget, Under the Bed offers very little in the form of a cohesive story and any sense of a creature mythology. This viewer was surprised at how easily the plot for this film could be summed up. Basically, two brothers fight off a creature,...

Steven C. Miller’s Under the Bed is making its way to DVD next week and we’ve been provided with an exclusive clip to share with Daily Dead readers.
“Every child knows about the monster under the bed—Neal Hausman’s mistake was trying to fight it. Neal (Jonny Weston, Chasing Mavericks) has returned from a two-year exile following his tragic attempt to defeat the monster, only to find his father ticking ever closer to a breakdown, a new stepmother who fears him, and his little brother Paul (Gattlin Griffith, Green Lantern, Changeling), terrorized by the same monster. While Neal and Paul work together to try and fight the nocturnal menace, their parents are taking desperate measures to get the family back to normal. With no support from their parents, the brothers have nothing to rely on but each other, and courage beyond belief.”

Title: Under the Bed Director: Steven C. Miller Starring: Jonny Weston, Gattlin Griffith, Peter Holden, Musetta Vander, Kelcie Stranahan An indie horror flick that debuted at the Fantasia Festival last year and made the rounds at a number of genre fests, the suburban-set “Under the Bed” unfolds with a nuance and relative level of sophistication that belies its generic title, before eventually succumbing to a haphazard, poorly explained explosion of gore at the hands of a nasty creature hell-bent on terrorizing a pair of brothers. Directed by Steven C. Miller, the movie is for much of its running time quite engaging, and plugged into a sense of clammy unease, but [ Read More ]

Steven C. Miller’s Under the Bed will start its limited theatrical release this Friday and we have a number of special features coming up. The first is an exclusive Q&A with costume designer Ambre Wrigley, thanks to FancyDressCostumes.co.uk. In this feature, Ambre talks about her fear of monsters as a child, taking inspiration from music, and modifying costumes for horror movies.
How did you get involved with Under The Bed?
Ambre Wrigley: I responded to an ad looking for a costume designer. I met with Steven Miller (Director), Will Clevinger (Producer), and Ben Rabbers (Upm). We interviewed for about 15 minutes until they said they’d get back to me and about 20 minutes into my drive home I got a call offering me the gig. I was so excited about it I couldn’t stop grinning for days. I’d just landed my first full feature as a costume designer.

Arriving in limited theatres July 19th and on Blu-ray/DVD July 30th is indie horror maverick Steven C. Miller's latest project, the super creepy and equally fun Under the Bed.
A modern horror fable for a new generation of creature lovers out there, Under the Bed, which is already available on VOD platforms everywhere, follows two brothers named Neal (Jonny Weston) and Paul (Gattlin Griffith), who are dealing with a monster lurking underneath their bed which comes out to terrorize them every night when the lights go out. Their parents aren't much help at all (of course), forcing Neal and Paul to defend themselves alone against the supernatural menace living beneath their bed.
Dread Central recently chatted with Miller about what inspired his kid-centric (but still fun for adults) horror project, more on the monster mythology we didn't get to see in Under the Bed, a tease of the...

What do you get when you mix the mystical fun of Joe Dante with the gross brutality of Wes Craven? If you asked me that question about a week ago, I would have been hard-pressed to find an example, but now that I’ve seen director Steven C. Miller’s latest release, I can instantly answer Under The Bed. Written by Eric Stolze, this fresh take on the boogeyman who hides under your bed carries itself in two very distinctive ways, mostly existing as a fantastical creep-fest featuring grabby monster hands and rooms filled with smoke – until a finale that morphs into a gore-filled creature feature. Miller’s film is creative, fun, full of brutally attractive practical effects, and an undeniably entertaining take on a story that’s been re-interpreted for years. Want to know what goes bump in the night? You’re about to find out.

Such a qualm can be aimed at films whose primary audience are youth, as well as for pictures featuring children as the protagonists that can be enjoyed by everyone. That is, in essence, the key: making a movie that all can enjoy. American director Steven C. We gave the Hollywood Reporter an exclusive first look at Jonny Weston (John Dies at the End) and Gattlin Griffith (The New Daughter, Changeling, Green Lantern) in Under The Bed, a new horror film produced by both Tom and myself announced last week. Now in post, THR has a few more details: Weston and Griffith "play brothers who team up to battle a creature in what is being described as a "suburban nightmare" tale," adding that it's "a love letter to early Steven Spielberg films." Steven C. Miller (Automaton Transfusion) directs from a screenplay penned by Eric Stolze. As previously announced, Peter Holden (The Social Network), Musetta Vander (Sindel in Mortal Kombat: Annihilation) and Kelcie Stranahan round out the cast. Holden plays Terry, the brothers' father, while Vander stars as the stepmother Angela. Stranahan plays Cara, Neal's love interest.

I became a fan of Steven C. Miller several years ago after watching his $30,000 zombie flick Automaton Transfusion and I've watched him and his projects ever since. Most recently is the cool Syfy/After Dark Originals film Scream of the Banshee which was freaking amazing for this horror fan and I've even requested a sequel to said director earlier today!
Anyway, what do you get when you team up Miller with Brad Miska from Bloody-Disgusting and company? You get the next horror offering entitled Under The Bed. From what I've been told is I'm going to love this so I know all of you horror fanatics will too! Read on below and dig on the cool image up top Siska sent over.

Outside of Bloody Disgusting, both Tom and myself produced a horror movie that we're pretty damn proud of. Over the past few month's we've been working insane hours on both the website and Under The Bed, our horror film inspired by classic Steven Spielberg films such as Poltergeist. Jonny Weston (John Dies at the End) and Gattlin Griffith (The New Daughter, Changeling, Green Lantern) topline the latest indie from up and coming genre producing outfit Site B. The duo will play brothers, Neal and Pauly, respectively. Ever since we discovered his $30k zombie feature Automaton Transfusion back in '05/'06, we've been huge fans of director Steven C. Miller, which is why we approached him to helm this love letter to the 1980's. The script was penned by Eric Stolze from a story we co-developed together. Peter Holden, Musetta Vander and Kelcie Stranahan round out the cast.

Director Josh Eisenstadt (Dark Reel) firmly states that this film is not a horror film and instead Spreading Darkness is more psychological thriller. The first teaser does show one man, Stu (Eric Roberts), under some distress, while he talks about being followed, or stalked to another character, Mark (James Duval). His torment is heightened as his dead wife (Tara Cardinal) beckons him from the grave. Have a look at the first clip for this film below, with more details to follow.
The synopsis for the film, courtesy of the Coventry Telegraph:
"Spreading Darkness is a dark psychological thriller about Stu Undercoffler (Roberts), a man who seems to have it all. That is, until the people he took it from decide they want it back. Stu seems to have it under control, but then visions of his dead wife (Cardinal) become more and more real" (Coventry).

Fortunately, we can remedy that problem right now by bringing you this new Redband trailer for the film which is able to show a lot more of the “flavor” you can expect.
