Industry figures at the Holland Film Meeting talk to Screen about the importance of locally-based sales companies.
In the wake of the collapse of Fortissimo Films last month, a heated debate has begun in the Netherlands about the lack of sales agents in the Benelux region.
At the Holland Film Meeting in Utrecht this weekend (Sept 22-25), several leading producers have commented on the importance of establishing new locally-based companies that can represent Dutch movies at international markets. There has even been talk of government support for a Dutch sales agency, either helping existing companies or setting up a new national agency.
The debate comes as Pim van Collem’s sales outfit Dutch Features Global Entertainment has revealed that it is planning to set up a small arthouse label next year, and as speculation continues to swirl around what will happen to Fortissimo’s titles.

Borgman – Alex Van Warmerdan
Section: Main Competition
Buzz: Alex Van Warmerdan’s latest film is immediately of note because it’s the first Dutch film to play the Main Comp in thirty eight years. But more excitingly, its inclusion here should bring a wider audience to the offbeat Dutch filmmaker who has been consistently making wonderously weird films since his 1986 debut, Voyeur (aka Abel). Enthusiasts may be familiar with some of his well known titles, such as The Northerners (1992), which features Theo Van Gogh in an acting role, or Grimm (2003), but the preview of his latest feature promises that Borgman may be one of the highlights of Cannes 2013.
The Gist: Borgman is the central character in Alex van Warmerdam’s dark, malevolent fable. Is he a dream or a demon, a twisted allegory or an all-too-real embodiment of our fears? Borgman is a sinister arrival in the sealed-off streets of modern suburbia.

While the royal wedding was a hot ticket, the Queen's reception was an even more exclusive affair. Roughly 650 guests gathered at Buckingham Place to celebrate Prince William and Catherine Middleton after the couple exchanged vows at Westminster Abbey on Friday. "It was very cozy," says Alex van Straubenzee, father of the late Henry van Straubenzee, a close friend of William's. "There was a wonderful relaxed atmosphere. There were lots of people there - even in a place as big as Buckingham Palace. I won't say it was informal, but everyone was having a wonderful time." After guests mingled with the royals,...

This week's DVD and Blu-ray offerings are no longer a cash-sucking onslaught like the last few weeks, which does make it easier for our wallets.
First up, Centurion, Neil Marshall's fun epic, is finally available for us to take home, and we can definitely recommend it with good conscience. Also, series and movies from TV and their dead-tree companions are out, and they are surprisingly decent in this batch. (Well, one re-release is surely capitalizing on the popularity of its actor, and we bet you can figure out which one that is.) Finally, don't forget the duo release of a couple of Roger Corman flicks!

Directed by Neil Marshall

Have a thing for geeks? Better still, have a thing for hot chicks? Well look no further as the new full trailer for the upcoming MTV slasher sequel 'My Super Psycho Sweet 16: Part 2' has arrived. It airs on MTV on 22 October at 10:00pm. Julianna Guill (below), Kirsten Prout, Stella Maeve, Chris Zylka, Myndy Crist, Robert Pralgo, Lauren McKnight, Matt Angel, Keith Allen Hayes, Gina Rodriguez, Alex Van, Devin Keaton, Reagan Michelle and Jennifer Sun Bell star. Check out the trailer below. It almost seems a little 'wrong' to be seeing smoking hot actress Julianna Guill in a role as a mere 16 year old after only seeing her again recently in the 'Friday the 13th' sequel in all her topless glory! Something we'll unlikely catch a glimpse of in this more watered down slasher flick...

Any '80s throwback worth its salt needs to leave the door open to a sequel. And Jacob Gentry's My Super Psycho Sweet 16 did just that. Whether you caught the film on MTV or not is moot, because Gentry and writers Jed Elinoff and Scott Alan Thomas have begun production on My Super Psycho Sweet 16: Part 2 . Lauren McKnight reprises her role as Skye and is also joined by Chris Zylka, Matt Angel, Myndy Crist, Alex Van and Gina Rodriguez. Shooting is taking place in Atlanta and continues the story of psychopath Charlie Rotter who, in the first film, turned a sweet 16 bash at a Rollerdome into a bloodbath. For anyone who’s watched MTV’s reality show My Super Sweet 16, the sense of entitlement exhibited by some of its birthday girls and the obscene flaunting of wealth in the service of celebrating them can be as horrifying as any youth-slasher film. Now that the network has combined the two forms in its original movie My Super Psycho Sweet 16 (debuting tonight at 10 p.m. Est/Pst), it’s disappointing, but perhaps not surprising, that the result doesn’t take full advantage of the opportunity to throw some barbed satire the series’ way, preferring instead to emphasize a generic scenario of pointed objects aimed at its teen characters.
Actually, you have to take some of the protagonists’ word for their teenaged status; “You only turn 16 once,” says antiheroine Madison Penrose (Julianna Guill), who looks like she’s turned 16 at least four or five times. Madison wants to reopen...

Buzz: Can't say that I'm familiar with the Dutch film industry or helmer Alex van Warmerdam, but I've made room in my schedule for this dark comedy based on a couple of stills and the trailer. Tiff's Dimitri Eipides describes this as "a dark comedy so cynical it's bound to make your head spin. The director even casts himself as a dog. Alex van Warmerdam pushes his way forward with a brilliant adaptation of a near-impossible screenplay." I could see this being a fit on a label such as IFC Films. The Gist: Emma is a lady living in high style, surrounded by family members who double as maids and servants. CineMart selects projects for '08

AMSTERDAM -- CineMart, the co-production market of the International Film Festival of Rotterdam, has selected 39 projects, from a record number of 550 entries.
During its 25th edition, CineMart -- which runs Jan. 27-31 -- will present new productions by Abbas Kiarostami, Sophie Fiennes, Cristi Puiu, Jafar Panahi and Alex Van Warmerdam.
CineMart manager Marit van den Elshout said of the upcoming edition: "The record number of entries gave us an overview of the topical themes and developments that characterize today's independent filmmaking. We have selected powerful and promising projects that match with current demands of producers, buyers and funding bodies but also stay true to the Rotterdam spirit."
Den Elshout said the aim for the selection of the 25th anniversary of CineMart was to get a more focused and selective lineup.
"In order to give each project the exclusivity it deserves, we have brought down the number of projects to below 40 projects. Considering the fact that a record number of applications was received this year, this meant an even more difficult selection process," Den Elshout said.

Grimm

Chicago Film Festival
CHICAGO -- How do you say "Coen brothers" in Dutch? Stick a "van der" in front? Essentially, that's the name that could fit Dutch filmmaker Alex Van Warmerdam, who has cobbled out a Coen-ish comedy.
Arousing more than a few bursts of audience laughter at the Chicago International Film Festival, "Grimm" trips along on a twisted narrative course, previously charted by David Lynch and Luis Bunuel. While there are some hilarious peculiarities in this roadshow, "Grimm" is pretty much of a groan.
Crammed with derivative elements, it's a veritable primer on Surreal Comedy for Dummies, which, at a film festival, means there's a significant part of the audience who believe they've "discovered" originality. Dark humor, rancid imagery and anti-bourgeois philosophy are the Lynch-pins of the film's nebulous plot line.
Meandering out in a twisted variation on "Hansel and Gretel", older teenage siblings Jacob (Jacob Derwig) and Marie (Halina Reijn) are led into the deep, dark woods by their father and then abandoned, left only with instructions to seek out their uncle in Spain.
As they skip, dash and stumble through the woods, mountains and an Old West ghost town on the way to Uncle's house, they encounter oddities and obstacles: A horny farmwife ravages John, and abundant farm animals (of varying degrees of symbolic importance) enliven their journey. When the roadside distractions dwindle, screenwriters van Warmerdam and Otakar Votocek heave in the ever-serviceable incest subplot, as Jacob and Marie rub-a-dub in the tub.
Eventually, J&M ramble into Spain, or as film-savvy viewers might notice, Bunuel-ville: Sadism, dead carcasses and a quick poke at the Catholic church are the aesthetic elements that are herein plundered. While his copycat filmmaking wears thin, van Warmerdam's musical skills brim: He's plucked and thumped a jaggedly pulsating musical track. Emulating "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" blues-ings, "Grimm"'s musical journey charts a deeper chord than the film's shallow narrative.

Big Bad Love

A smashing directorial debut by actor Arliss Howard in which he also plays the chronically smashed lead character, "Big Bad Love" is an underdog IFC Films release that opens today in New York and March 9 in Los Angeles. The film premiered at last year's Festival de Cannes and also screened at Toronto, where it failed to pick up any awards or much critical support.
While joining the shortlist of good films about inebriated writers, "Love" may not equally intoxicate all moviegoers who stumble upon it in limited release. But from the performances and the cinematography to the outstanding soundtrack and unconventional narrative, the film is blazingly alive and admirable on many levels.
Written by Howard and his brother James Howard and based on the short stories of Larry Brown, set in the specific north Mississippi hill country, "Love" also marks the return of Debra Winger, both as producer and co-star, after a six-year absence from the screen. Howard and Winger are married in real life, but in the film, they credibly portray divorced parents of two young children.
Showing that she's lost none of her skills and willingness to explore dark material, Winger, however, is not onscreen that much in a scenario that plays for long stretches like a one-man circus of misery. "Love" dips into its bluesy, hazy world with perhaps its least accomplished montage. Passed out in the bathtub in his clothes, dreaming of making love, manic writer Barlow (Howard) is simultaneously receiving in the mailbox an armful of rejected manuscripts. After the opening credits, he's awoken by best friend and fellow Vietnam veteran Monroe (Paul Le Mat) for another day of drinking beer and thinking about work.
Painting houses with skill and one side of a boxcar with artistry, writing stories about his fractured lifestyle, plunging into fights in bars, Barlow is both sympathetic and majorly flawed. He's in such a daze that it's amazing he gets anything accomplished, but his backwoods soulfulness keeps him focused on a writing career, even if his biggest supporter -- former spouse Marilyn (Winger) -- also has a restraining order against him.
Another helpful presence in Barlow's life is a young lawman (Alex Van) who early on looks the other way when Monroe and the lead are driving very drunk. Later, their bad behavior behind the wheel has a part in a roadway calamity that seriously injures Monroe. Barlow's family is represented by his well-heeled, critical mother (Angie Dickinson), while Monroe marries his heart's desire (Rosanna Arquette).
It's the death of his long-incurably sick daughter that has a lasting impact on Barlow, as well as finally getting an acceptance letter from an (in his mind sexy) woman editor. In front of the camera, Howard seems born to play the character, like Mickey Rourke in "Barfly". His scenes with Le Mat, in a career-highlight role, are often humorous, which helps balance out the film's many shades of morose. Winger has several short, poignant scenes that more than illuminate the turbulent depths of her character, but "Love" is much more than just another tale of an artist's struggle and redemption.
Throughout "Love", Howard adventurously mixes Barlow's dreams and fantasies with the drunken life he leads. He tries and pulls off some marvelously cinematic sequences. Of course, sobering doesn't begin to describe the ultimately hopeful journey Barlow makes, but it helps that the music is loaded with such "hard blues" gems as Kenny Brown's "Boxcar Blues", R.L. Burnside's "Everything Is Broken" and Tom Waits' "Long Way Home", one of two original songs he contributed.
