A brutal and bloody action legacy sequel is now streaming, and finds action movie icon Jean-Claude Van Damme returning to one of his cult classic 80s sci-fi franchises. After leading the first Universal Soldier, which combines science fiction and action into a gloriously no-nonsense B-grade treat, and returning for a few much lesser follow-ups, the franchise was resurrected in 2012 with a legacy sequel led by John Wick: Chapter 4 and The Expendables 2 star Scott Adkins.
Universal Soldier: Day Of Reckoning sees Van Dammes super soldier Luc Deveraux return to the fray, but with a twist. This time, instead of leading the action as the main protagonist, the legacy sequel brings the character back as the main antagonist, with the final movie following Adkins amnesiac super soldier as he fights to discover who he really is. Jean-Claude Van Damme has kept a fairly low profile compared to many other 80s action heroes. And that includes such non-genre appearances as voice acting in kids films like Kung Fu Panda 2 and 3, Minions: The Rise of Gru as well as a cameo in the French comedy Haters. However, Darkness of Man sees him return to the Dtv action spotlight
As the film opens, Russel Hatch lies in a puddle of his own blood, bleeding out from several bullet wounds. He tells us in voice-over that, like every story, this began with a woman. And we go back to Miami two years prior when Hatch was an Interpol agent.

Jean-Claude Van Damme takes his limber dance moves to a parking lot and the desert in the new music video for French duo AaRON’s “Ultrarêve.”
The dance-rock group, which previously recruited John Malkovich for their similarly quirky 2015 video “Blouson Noir,” said the Belgian action star initially reached out to AaRON about a film he was working on. That conversation led to the duo telling Van Damme about their new album Anatomy of Light, due out September 18th.

I hope you all had a good Thanksgiving, dear readers, and I hope a lot of you got out to see Frozen over the holiday weekend. December is finally here, and it’s time for us all to start preparing for our preferred winter holidays. In the meantime, this week’s slightly belated Trailer Trashin’ column takes a look at Enemies Closer, one of next January’s more low-profile releases.
Premise: Henry (Tom Everett Scott), a forest ranger and ex-Navy Seal, has his quiet life disrupted by the arrival of Clay (Orlando Jones), a former comrade with a vendetta against him. But before Clay can attempt to get revenge, the two men are caught by a ruthless drug cartel led by a man named Xander (Jean-Claude Van Damme). The cartel forces the two men to help retrieve a major shipment of heroin which went missing deep in a forest on the Us-Canadian border.

Hollywood can be a tough place for young actors and actresses, and the seeming benefit or advantage of nepotism isn’t always what outsiders might make it out to be. Such is the case for Kristopher Van Varenberg, the 24-year-old son of notoriously limber action star Jean-Claude Van Damme and Gladys Portugues, an ex-bodybuilder and fitness competitor. Mixing action roles and bit parts in movies alongside his dad with character work in other films — including two new After Dark Films releases, “Dragon Eyes” and “Philly Kid,” debuting this week – the friendly and candid Van Varenberg is out to leave his own mark in the entertainment business. Filming on Six Bullets from director Ernie Barbarash (Cube Zero and the upcoming Jcvd/Scott Adkins film, Assassination Games) is gearing up for a September shoot in Bucharest, and Film New Europe has a pic of Jean-Claude Van Damme beefing up for his role, and probably for The Expendables 2, which should be shooting very soon too for its proposed August 2012 release.
Van Damme plays an ex-mercenary hired by a martial art fighter to find his kidnapped daughter. Van Damme’s son, Kristopher Van Varenberg, is also expected in the cast.

Jean Claude Van Damme–the “Muscles from Brussels”–is about to become a reality TV star. In America, we will likely see him on A&E.
He’s arrived in Cannes, is staying on a yacht, and has brought his 20ish son Kristopher van Varenberg as Creative Director. Tomorrow, on the Apache, he’s throwing a cocktail party to announce that he’s going to become the next Ozzy Osbourne or Gene Simmons. Why not?
Van Damme is already an international star. There should be a lot of interest in seeing him as he gets ready for an October fight with Somluck Kamsing, the 1996 Olympic gold medalist in boxing. (The joke, of course, is that Van Damme will need “some luck” to beat this guy. Ha, ha.)
There was a lot of buzz about British firm ITV doing this deal with Van Damme last winter. But now...
