This year gifts us the 40th anniversary of the major motion picture “Streets of Fire.” In 1984, Walter Hill’s ambitious “rock & roll fable” sported a killer soundtrack and an all-star cast, how could it possibly have failed? Oh, right, it was released against both “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” and “Star Trek III: The Search for Spock” (the summer of 1984 was stacked). And that aforementioned all-star cast? Including Diane Lane, Willem Dafoe, Rick Moranis, Bill Paxton, and Amy Madigan? None of them were famous yet.
But, over the past 40 years, Hill’s “Streets of Fire” has developed quite a robust following. (In 1984, its biggest cultural footprint was probably the song “I Can Dream About You,” performed by fictional group The Sorels in the film and Dan Hartman in reality, which peaked at number six on Billboard’s Hot 100 and got extensive play on MTV.)

Lately, we at JoBlo have been championing the collection of physical media in the face of certain movies that have been getting somewhat lost due to extremely limited availability. This is especially an issue for those who partake in a digital collection of movies, which has the potential of disappearing despite purchasing them. However, there are great distributors like Vinegar Syndrome and Arrow Video that have done a fantastic job remastering rare movies for Blu-ray releases. The Mvp Rewind Collection has recently announced that the Albert Pyun action-thriller, Mean Guns, starring Christopher Lambert, Ice-t, Michael Halsey, Deborah Van Valkenburgh and Tina Cote is set for a Blu-ray release on April 9.
The plot description, courtesy of Blu-ray.com, reads,
“The world’s most dangerous criminals are summoned to a new prison on the eve before its grand opening by Moon, the ruthless leader of the world’s most powerful crime syndicate.

Director William Friedkin (who passed away earlier this year) made a lot of great films, including Best Picture winner The French Connection and one of the best horror movies ever made, The Exorcist. One you don’t hear referenced very often is the serial killer thriller Rampage, which had trouble making its way out into the world and was a project where Friedkin felt he had missed the mark, as the finished film wasn’t close enough to his original vision for it. But now Kino Lorber is showing Rampage some of the respect it’s been lacking over the decades, as Blu-ray.com reports they’ll be giving the film a 4K Uhd release sometime in early 2024.
Scripted by Friedkin and based on a novel of the same name by William P. Wood, Rampage delves into the subject of legal insanity, so often the default defense in modern-time gruesome crime trials.

Fans have feared that the 1979 cult classic The Warriors was going to get a remake any day now. It is finally happening, only as a TV show. Though, it appears to have some fan favorite directors behind it. The Russo Brothers, who directed both Captain America: The Winter Solider and this summer's Captain America: Civil War, are teaming up with Paramount and Hulu to get the Coney Island Warriors on the small screen in weekly doses.
The Warriors will be a one-hour drama that reimagines the original movie directed by Walter Hill. That film was based on the seminal coming-of-age novel by Richard Price. According to Deadline, the show will honor the original storyline, while bringing in the Russo's 'unique brand of grit, pulp, sex and violence.'
Writer Frank Baldwin will be helping with scripting duties on The Warriors, working alongside the Russo Brothers on each episode. As of now,...

It's happened once again, as the "Greatest Event in TV History" has been unleashed. This time around, Adam Scott and friends recreated the intro to the early 1980s sitcom "Too Close for Comfort," which is what many expected after the teaser image that was released.
Before the show could get underway, they had to introduce the cast and go behind-the-scenes to show how it all was made, of course. Things started off with Jeff Probst essentially apologizing for the last two installments not truly being TV's greatest moment. Instead, he renamed the night "An Event in TV History," which definitely seems more appropriate.
Joining Scott, who played Jim J. Bullock's role in the intro, was Catherine O'Hara (Nancy Dussault), Jon Glaser (Ted Knight), Chelsea Peretti (Deborah Van Valkenburgh) and Kathryn Hahn (Lydia Cornell).
They weren't the only ones getting in on the fun though, as Jason Mantzoukas was the director,...

Several years in the making (a rough cut premiered at Austin's Alamo Drafthouse back in 2008), Road To Hell sees a jaded Cody (Michael Pare) making his way through a surreal, purgatorial landscape where he meets two foul-mouthed female spree-killers (Clare Kramer and Courtney Peldon) who derail his attempts to find redemption after years of fighting an unnamed war. Featuring the music of original Streets composer Jim Steinmann alongside new songs by Anthony Riparetti and performed by The Roxy Gunn Project, with longtime fave Deborah Van Valkenburgh reprising her role as Cody's sassy sister, The Road To Hell offers a dark flipside to the classic rock n roll fable.

Thinking about attending the Triple Threat Film Fest in Chicago this March, which is showing Albert Pyun's Road to Hell along with director's cuts of his earlier films Nemesis and Cyborg? Then check out this promo he cut together for the event!
It's lengthy but covers all three films and reminds us why the older ones are still cult favorites to this day. Along with the video, Pyun sent over a new "Triple Threat" banner ad by graphic artist Jerry Scullion, who also did the Cyborg case art.

In the midst of all the Fantastic Fest '08 insanity, a very rare and exciting event quietly slipped in and packed the Alamo Ritz with adoring fans. We were lucky enough to present a cast screening of the mighty Walter Hill rock n' roll action epic Streets Of Fire with stars Michael Pare and Deborah Van Valkenburgh Live! As if that wasn't enough, they also took the stage along with director Albert Pyun and the other creators of the semi-official Sof sequel Road To Hell, which had its world premiere theatrical screening!
To top it all off, this epic event was presided over by legendary Alamo programmer/Music Monday creator (and Streets Of Fire fan # 1) Kier-la Janisse, who's since moved away from our nation, but was definitely back in fine form to bring the stars of her favorite movie to the stage.
