Of the hundreds of pieces of entertainment Full Moon founder Charles Band has brought into the world, one of my favorites is the 1984 sci-fi thriller classic Trancers, which also happens to be one of my favorite Christmas movies. Now, Full Moon has revealed that they’ll be releasing a black & white version of Trancers, called Trancers Noir, on the Full Moon Features streaming service this Friday, February 7th!

Directed by Band from a screenplay by Danny Bilson and Paul De Meo, Trancers has the following synopsis: Welcome to Angel City, 2247. Trooper Jack Deth (Tim Thomerson) is wiping out the last disciples of Whistler, who used his psychic power to ‘trance’ those with inferior minds, forcing them to follow his every desire. When in doubt, clown it out!

Sylvester Stallone was one of the biggest movie stars of the 1980s and had many acclaimed roles in action hits, franchise sequels, and underrated thrillers. While this was a decade defined by Stallone's feud with Arnold Schwarzenegger, these two icons pushed each other forward to star in increasingly outrageous cult favorites throughout this incredible decade in filmmaking. During this time, Stallone often one-upped the stakes of his long-standing rival by branching out into comedies, neo-noirs, and continuing to make his own work as a writer, director, and star of some of the biggest hits of this era.

Many of the best Stallone movies were released during the 1980s, as this was a prime time for the popularity of his characters like Rocky Balboa and John Rambo. Stallone had plenty of underrated movies during this time that, only with the power of hindsight, have come to be regarded as cult classics and misunderstood fan favorites.

JoBlo’s own Lance Vlcek recently had the chance to interview one of my favorite people in the entertainment business, Full Moon founder Charles Band, about his upcoming release The Primevals – and during their conversation, Band happened to mention a potential project that really captured my imagination. If all goes well, Full Moon will be teaming with a major streaming service to revive the Trancers franchise as a TV series!

Band told Lance, “We have a couple of really interesting possible reboot deals brewing. Now, of course, everything’s slowed down or stopped because of the writers strike and the SAG strike, but in time they’ll turn around, and it will be nice to see some of these movies like Trancers, which is one of them, get made – in the case of Trancers, into a really hopefully well-appointed series on one of the bigger streaming services.“

Over the course of a film career that stretches back 50 years, Charles Band has produced nearly 400 projects and directed several dozen – and in his memoir Confessions of a Puppetmaster (pick up a copy Here), he says that one of the movies fans mention to him the most is the 1983 sci-fi film Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn… which happens to have fun connections to both Jaws 3-D and the sitcom Night Court.

Directed by Band from a screenplay by Alan J. Adler, Metalstorm has the following synopsis: On a desert planet, warlord Jared-Syn is trying to convince a tribe of mutants that he’s their messiah and gain unlimited power hidden in a crystal. Ranger Dogen and explorer Dhyana, who’s father was murdered by Syn, must stop him.

Albert Pyun was a beloved B-movie filmmaker who brought audiences a total of 52 films as a director and who recently passed away leaving two upcoming films seemingly unfinished. Charlie Hauck, a writer-producer who penned scripts for some of TV’s most iconic sitcoms – Maude, Frasier, Home Improvement, One Day At A Time and, under a pseudonym as a favor to Larry Gelbert, one episode of M*A*S*H – died at his Los Angeles home on Saturday, Nov. 14, of complications from pancreatic cancer. He was 79.

His death was confirmed by his daughter Flannery Cogan Hauck.

“Nobody made me laugh harder, or more often, than Charlie Hauck,” said Maude creator Norman Lear. “He defined ‘funny’ and was a glorious man and friend.”

Hauck, whose career spanned more than 35 years, created the 1986 Valerie Harper comedy Valerie and co-created The Associates, the 1979 ABC sitcom that introduced a young Canadian actor named Martin Short to U.S. audiences.

Fade To Black, released 40 years ago today, is a deliciously demented, and surprisingly tragic, slice of meta-cinema. The tale of a much-maligned matinee maniac gone sour, Fade To Black rides a riveting, tour de force star turn from Dennis Christopher into certifiable legend status. This criminally under-seen thriller received a chilly reception upon its initial release (its Rotten Tomatoes rating of 45% among critics is a tremendous injustice) and did not make much of an impact with domestic audiences, but it has garnered something of a cult appreciation in recent years. There’s a moment in the fourth episode of Showtime’s “The Comedy Store” where Neal Brennan is interviewing Jay Leno about what the former “Tonight Show” host thinks about the current use of podcasts as vehicles for stand-up comedians to both hone their craft and build name recognition. After awakening in a mental asylum, a patient plans an escape to freedom, but finds an even more disturbing, supernatural world on the outside, one that threatens to keep him trapped in madness forever.

Asylum of Darkness creates a surreal reality which creates more questions than answers. Playing out like an extended version of the Twilight Zone, as if it had been directed by David Lynch, so it’s almost impossible to predict the outcome.

Dwight (Nick Baldasare) is currently detained in a mental institution due to him suffering from visions. This has him constantly questioning what is real, including monsters and his doctor, who looks like a rotting corpse. Certain he will find his sanity on the outside, he manages to escape, but once outside things really start to get weird.

One of Richard Hatch's final onscreen performances will be unveiled later this month, Heat Vision has learned.

Asylum of Darkness, about a man who plots his escape from a mental asylum while fighting off supernatural forces, will premiere on VOD April 11 from Wild Eye Releasing. In an exclusive clip from the film, Hatch's character, Dr. Shaker, shows off his scarier side.

It’s an homage to cult John Carpenter films like “Big Trouble in Little China and “They Live.” There’s also a nod to the classic old martial arts films featuring Sammo Hung. Hey, retro junkies! Shout! Factory have announced a nifty 3D Blu-ray release of the 1983 sci-fi romp, Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn. It also comes with a regular Blu-ray.

This otherworldly action film was directed by Empire Pictures founder Charles Band (Parasite, Trancers) and also features his Trancers star Tim Thomerson (Near Dark).

Happy Birthday to one of We Are Movie Geeks favorite stars. Clint Eastwood was born on this day in 1930, making him 86 years old. The actor and two-time Oscar winning director hasn’t let his age slow him down a bit. Sully, his new movie as a director, opens in September.

Honorable Mention: Honkytonk Man

By the 1980s, Clint Eastwood was one of Hollywood’s most bankable stars. With his own production company, directorial skills, and economic clout, Eastwood was able to make smaller, more personal films. A perfect example is the underrated Honkytonk Man, which also happens to be one of Eastwood’s finest performances.

John Goodman was the big guest on today's Howard Stern Show, and the sleepy-voiced Roseanne icon was endearing, forthright and funny throughout. During the sit-down he opened up about his struggles with alcoholism, related feeling like an outsider on the Hollywood scene and, hilariously, forgot not only the name of his 10 Cloverfield Lane co-star Mary Elizabeth Winstead but the title of the 1999 film he made with Martin Scorsese. Also: why he feels he let SNL down during his last guest-hosting appearance. Here are all the highlights from the chat. His attempt at conversation with Kristen Wiig at a social gathering didn't go well. I’ve always been obsessed with watching movies. From seeing 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea at the age of four at a Saturday matinee revival to today, the flickering shadow shows have filled my life. Consumed, I’m sure some would say. However, discerning fact from fiction has never been an issue, unlike Eric Binford, the hapless ‘hero’ of the eerie (and funny) Fade to Black (1980) – now here’s a kid with issues.

Written and directed by Vernon Zimmerman (The Unholy Rollers), Fade to Black was distributed by American Cinema Releasing on October 14th, 1980. The film bypassed audiences for the most part, but critics were generally pleased with the offbeat tone that it brought to the genre. If you love movies about movies, especially with a horror bent, Fade to Black is the film for you.

It is fair to say that Charles Band makes some interesting movies, most of them B-movies with a cult charm. As fans we love them for this very fact, whether it’s the brave move to just go for the fun instead of high quality drama, or sometimes and often more rarely actually being a surprisingly good movie. 88 Films are releasing one of these on Blu-ray in the form of Trancers, a movie that borrows a lot from Bladerunner but adds a time travelling concept that for its time was quite smart.

Jack Deth (Tim Thomerson) was a Trancer hunter, until the day he decided to walk away from the job. When Whistler (Michael Stefani) travels back in time though...

Yes, the classic 1984 film Trancers is now available on Blu-ray from Full Moon Entertainment, and a grand release party is planned for July 19 in Burbank, CA. Also, one lucky entrant is going to win a copy of the disc signed by star Tim Thomerson.

The Trancers Blu-ray contains both the original version of the film and a remastered 2014 edition with incredible sound and images. Tons of special features include interviews, audio commentary, and a complete Trancers: City of Lost Angels segment.

Fans of the film could not ask for a better Blu-ray rendering!

I’m a bad Full Moon fan. I really am… I can now cross Bad Channels off my list of Full Moon flicks I know of but haven’t seen.

Yet another collaboration between Charles Band and his Subspecies director Ted Nicolaou, Bad Channels tells the story of Dangerous Dan (Hipp) a newly employed DJ at Kdul who is returning to the airwaves after a six month suspension by the FCC for a stunt he pulled while on the air. Covering Dan’s return to the airwaves is Lisa Cummings (Quinn) who doesn’t trust Dan and thinks he’s a hoax. She becomes the butt of his jokes when she spots a UFO landing near the radio station and Dan is quick to laugh until the alien breaks into Kdul.

Two of my favourite Full Moon flicks, Dollman and Demonic Toys, have been given the Blu-ray treatment by the folks at 88 Films. Already owning the pair on DVD we take a look at these new releases to see how they compare and if the new Blus are worthy of an upgrade…
