The Snes is arguably home to some of the best Japanese role-playing games ever made, but even among such revered company, Earthbound (known as Mother 2 in Japan) stands out as a brilliant satire about growing up and our fears of conformity. It’s anarchy versus conformity only conformity doesn’t stand a chance. This often funny, always poignant coming of age tale, deeply embedded in suburban mores, centers around four kids, off to save the planet by collecting melodies while en route to defeating the evil alien force known as Giygas.

usic is one of the most important art forms of human experience, and yet many of us don’t even know the name of the composer from our favorite media forms, like video games. Red Bull Music Academy decided to rectify this disgrace by giving Japanese video game composers their due consideration in a new web series called Diggin’ In The Carts. According to the series’ trailer, the six-part documentary aims to tell the “untold story of the men and women behind the most globally influential music to come out of Japan.” While this is a bold statement, it’s hard not to think of retro video games without remembering those 8-bit soundtracks. The passing of former Nintendo head honcho Hiroshi Yamauchi last week sent shockwaves throughout the entire video game industry, which will more than likely continue to be felt for quite some time.
Though one must imagine that those who working alongside him are feeling it the most. So it's not surprising to hear that one former Nintendo employee has decided to pay tribute to his former boss via song. Songs to exact. Remixes actually.
Polygon reports that the musician in question is Hirokazu Tanaka, who goes by the name Hip Tanaka (and most recently Chip Tanaka. Tanaka is responsible for some of Nintendo's most iconic soundtracks, including "Metroid", "Kid Icarus", "Tetris", and "Super Mario Land", to name a few.
And over at his SoundCloud, decided to post remixes from the first and last aforementioned games.
