Shattered dreams and multiple shades of loneliness are central to the plot of Pelin Esmer‘s indie title “And The Rest Will Follow”, which world-premiered in the Harbour strand of IFFR. The Turkish helmer continues where she stopped with her critically acclaimed drama “Watchtower” in 2012, digging into the psyche of her characters to expose the consequences of their traumatic experiences.
And The Rest Will Follow is screening at International Film Festival Rotterdam
A young film aficionado Aliye (Merve Asya Ozgur) finds refuge from her unbearably toxic atmosphere at home, and boring uninspiring job through activity not far away from stalking, in Esmer’s melancholic script written for “And The Rest Will Follow”. It all starts very harmlessly. Curious to see her idol Levent (Timucin Esen) live on stage, Alyie stays for the Q&a session with the established filmmaker upon the screening of his movie at the cinema in the hotel where she works.

This gentle but energised piece of work has a rather amazing performance from its five-year-old star at its emotional core
This 1989 movie from Turkish director Tunç Basaran is a gentle and touching but also energised and emotionally urgent piece of work, whose cast present themselves to the audience with a rough-and-ready immediacy, like a theatrical company. But there’s no question as to the star turn: a rather amazing performance from five-year-old newcomer Ozen Bilen as Baris, a wide-eyed little boy who is sent to a women’s prison with his mum Fatma (Füsun Demirel) after Turkey’s 1980 military coup.
Fatma has been convicted for drug-smuggling and now, lethargic and embittered, has not much time for Baris who wanders freely around the shabby hallways and into the bathrooms and dormitory cells. He forms a poignant attachment with Inci (Nür Surer), a political prisoner whose own loneliness finds a heartbreaking expression...

"I'm not leaving until we wrap." Netflix has unveiled an official trailer for a Turkish drama titled Cici, from filmmaker Berkun Oya (also of Happy New Year London previously). Set to premiere on Netflix for streaming at the end of this month. The synopsis states that years ago a family migrated to the city after a loss. When they reunite in their hometown 30 years later, buried emotions and painful secrets resurface. "A tragic death that brings the family together, reveals the repressed feelings and painful memories that they have kept from each other for around 30 years." The film's cast features Fatih Artman, Sevval Balkan, Ayça Bingöl, Incinur Dasdemir, Yilmaz Erdogan, Funda Eryigit, Olgun Simsek, Nur Sürer, and Okan Yalabik. This really seems like something quite special, an epic tale of a family and many years of emotions. Reminds me of the kind of films Nuri Bilge Ceylan makes. Looks like it might be worth watching.
