It has been well over two years since “Magazine Dreams” made its world premiere at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival. Following its premiere, the movie received largely mixed reviews but most critics were quick to heap praise on the performance given by its star, Jonathan Majors. It was subsequently picked up by Searchlight Pictures, which originally slated it to be released on December 8, 2023 — likely targeting a potential awards campaign for Majors.

The actor was caught up, however, in a domestic assault scandal in March 2023 that tarnished his previously shining, fast-rising star profile. Searchlight later dropped “Magazine Dreams,” reportedly due to both Majors’ assault case and the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. Briarcliff Entertainment has since acquired the film’s distribution rights, though, and it is now on the verge of finally being released.

The film has a Certified Fresh score of 84%, which is one of the best-rated films of Majors' career. The former MCU star's performance in particular is getting big praise from many critics, with some suggesting he'd likely have been up for an Oscar for his role if not for his real-life controversies.

In 2023, the action thriller Mercy was pummeled by critics, getting slapped with a rare and unwanted Rotten Tomatoes score of 0%. However, the film is getting another chance with Netflix subscribers two years after its release.

Per FlixPatrol, Mercy is currently ranked at No. 7 on Netflix's Top 10 chart for feature films, globally. The film was not a big success upon its release in theaters on May 12, 2023. Its reception was especially harsh, given the 0% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and its audience score is only good by direct comparison, as it's also rather low at 17%. The movie stars David Howard Thornton as Art the Clown, with a supporting cast that includes Lauren Lavera, Jason Patric, Daniel Roebuck, Samantha Scaffidi, Bryce Johnson, Bradley Stryker, Charlotte McKee, and Elliot Fullam. It is set for release on October 11, right in the middle of Halloween season.

In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Thornton discusses the development of Terrifier 4. Speaking about writer-director Leone's progress on Terrifier 4, Thornton noted that "he hasn't actually started writing the script." Thornton clarified though that Leone "has a lot of ideas" for what Terrifier 4 could look like. The actor also noted that him and Leone had worked together on how they wanted Art the Clown's arc to go.

The 51-year-old actor attended the premiere of his movie Eden with costars Sydney Sweeney, Ana de Armas and Vanessa Kirby on Saturday (September 7). The very next day, he was back on the red carpet for the premiere of his movie The Order.

If you aren’t familiar with the Terrifier films, the basic premise is that Art, a sadistic, supernatural clown played by David Howard Thornton, enjoys inflicting pain to others in increasingly bizarre, gruesome ways. It’s pretty simple, but weirdly enjoyable, too.

After debuting in anthology horror All Hallows Eve, writer and director Damien Leone made Thornton the star of Terrifier, swifly followed by Terrifier 2. Word of mouth, mainly discussing the horrific violence which was so extreme it allegedly made some viewers faint, ensured the films made hefty profits on modest budgets.

A few weeks ago, Variety reported that Paramount’s Republic Pictures had acquired the distribution rights to the serial killer horror thriller Vindicta and were planning to release the film sometime in October. Sean McNamara’s horror thriller “Vindicta” has been picked up by Paramount’s Republic Pictures. The film rounds up Elena Kampouris, Sean Astin and Jeremy Piven for a story about a twisted serial killer.

Astin previously starred in Season 2 of “Stranger Things” as fan-favorite Bob Newby, boyfriend of Joyce Byers. Piven is known for his role as Ari Gold in “Entourage” and starred in period drama series “Mr. Selfridge.” Kampouris is set to star in the upcoming film “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3” and previously led the 2020 remake of “Children of the Corn.”

“No one wanted to be caught in his path, I think because he made us uncomfortable,” says Bynum of the feeling of his fellow gym patrons.
