Shia Labeouf was promising in all forms before fumbling so hard that he is basically a pariah now. The actor (and screenwriter) had proved his talents in various films and was also gearing up to be a proper box office draw before his public troubles with the law and several controversies essentially ruined his career.
The Megapolis star has been known to cause controversies and his reactions to them have been equally intense. Actor Alec Baldwin recalled his experience working with the actor on a theatre production of Orphans. Baldwin mentioned that the two clashed over their processes, eventually leading to Labeouf exiting the project.

The LA Film Festival was a serious feeder for talent for both independent cinema and Hollywood. The festival highlighted exciting talent and gave that talent access and audience with the larger LA film world. Coffee dates were made, next projects were pitched, and a community was fostered.
A few notable names that you might have heard of this award season screened their earlier work at the fest, including Sean Baker (Anora), Justin Simien (Hollywood Black), Ali Abbasi (The Apprentice), and Jon M Chu (Wicked).
These four filmmakers took full advantage of everything the festival had to offer and are now able to make those daring projects that have earned them all that hardware. If we look at the films that they brought to the festival, we might learn a little something about what makes these filmmakers tick, and how themes they explored way back when are still relevant to the directors today.

Steady character actors are often some of the most unsung heroes of film and television, providing a consistent presence that can anchor a narrative and provide easy visual language for an audience to latch onto. Occasionally, some character actors are able to transcend to leading performances themselves, showing their abilities beyond being a more background player in a film or TV show.
Walton Goggins made his mark playing small roles in huge films, until he began taking more leading roles in television in the late 2010s and 2020s. His performances show his range as both a dramatic and comedic actor, and prove that an actor can have a huge impact in even the smallest of roles.

The past 18 months have marked an extraordinarily turbulent period for Jews worldwide, with a pogrom launched against communities in southern Israel soon yielding a major spike in antisemitic incidents. Veteran documentary filmmaker Wendy Sachs says she watched what transpired and began chronicling and connecting dots.
Sachs’ new film October 8 begins with the unprecedented Hamas attack a day earlier, then tracks the fallout over the course of the ensuing Gaza war, examining global anti-Israel protests along with increases in anti-Jewish rhetoric and violence.
The doc, which opened this past weekend, features a host of prominent figures, including advocates (the Anti-Defamation League’s Jonathan Greenblatt), academics (George Washington University’s Lorenzo Vidino), executives (Sheryl Sandberg), podcasters (Dan Senor), politicians (Ritchie Torres) and actor-activists Debra Messing (who executive produced the film) and the Israeli-American Noa Tishby (In Treatment, Nip/Tuck). With movie awards season over, and rumors that Adrian Brody’s Oscar acceptance speech is finally coming to an end, the year 2025 sees a surprising amount of faces coming straight back into the conversation. For one, Zoe Saldaña will be putting her Supporting Actress Oscar to good use on the publicity trail for one of the biggest tentpoles of the year: James Cameron’s Fire and Ash, the third in the Avatar series, in which she reprises her role as Na’vi princess Neytiri.
It doesn’t seem especially likely that lightning will strike twice for Saldaña, but the win will bring extra gravitas to the franchise, which secured four nominations (including Best Picture) last time. Fire and Ash hits cinemas in the middle of December, usually a risky strategy, awards-wise — think Wonka, Nosferatu and even A Complete Unknown — but Cameron has good form on this front, and, presumably for...

Kieran Culkin did not miss his chance Tuesday night to reunite with his former “Succession” co-star Sarah Snook when the two actors were captured in an adorable TikTok video embracing outside the Music Box Theatre in New York City.
Snook made her Broadway debut Monday in the first public preview of “The Picture of Dorian Gray,” having previously headlined the show’s West End run in 2024 in London. She took home the coveted Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress in April last year for her work in the production, which requires her to play a total of 26 roles throughout its runtime.
Culkin waited for Snook outside the Music Box’s stage door Tuesday night. While tightly hugging her, Culkin said, “I was taking pictures of the theater! I love you so much. Are you sick? I don’t care.” The actor then kissed his fellow “Succession” star on the cheek...

The first season of the former NBC reality competition series, in which Trump famously uttered the words "You're fired" to boardrooms full of business hopefuls until only one candidate remained to become his next apprentice, will launch today, with six additional seasons arriving each Monday through Apr. 27.

The 97th Academy Awards was a glamorous night filled with golden statues, designer gowns, and enough comedy to make even the most serious film critics crack a smile. First-time host Conan O'Brien proved to be the perfect maestro for Hollywood's biggest night, masterfully tiptoeing the line between playful jabs and genuinely entertaining moments.
O'Brien's opening monologue set the tone for an evening of unexpected laughs, surprising twists, and unforgettable celebrity interactions that will live on in awards show history. While not every fan is happy with the recipients of the 2025 Academy Awards, there are plenty of hilarious moments that deserve praise.
Conan's Bizarre Body Horror Entrance Made for a Unique Opening Image via ABC
In perhaps one of the most surreal openings in Oscar history, viewers were treated to a beautiful duet between Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande before the camera cut to a production assistant desperately knocking on Conan's dressing room door.

Ali Abbasi has signed with UTA for representation.
Abbasi’s fourth feature, “The Apprentice,” starring Sebastian Stan, Jeremy Strong and Maria Bakalova, premiered in Competition at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, marking his third Cannes selection. The film, which follows Donald Trump’s rise through the real estate industry in the ’80s with the guidance of lawyer Roy Cohn, earned a fair amount of attention this awards season despite its trouble finding mainstream distributors. It was subsequently nominated for two Academy Awards, two Golden Globes, three BAFTAs, and three Independent Spirit Awards, including Best Director.
Abbasi’s previous feature, “Holy Spider,” also premiered in Competition at Cannes, and Zar Amir-Ebrahimi won Best Actress for her performance. The film was also nominated for four European Film Awards.

Ali Abbasi is moving to UTA. The filmmaker behind the Oscar-nominated, young Donald Trump feature The Apprentice has signed with the agency, after departing CAA last month. His latest feature, which centers on the 1980s rise of Trump, earned a best actor nomination and a Golden Globe nom for Sebastian Stan’s work as young Trump, and Oscar and Golden Globe nominations for Jeremy Strong’s performance as Trump mentor Roy Cohn.
The film earned strong reviews after debuting at Cannes last May, and the Iranian-born Abbasi landed an Independent Spirit Award nomination for his work on the project.
Abbasi’s agency move comes after he apologized last month for an incident at CAA’s Golden Globes party, but he said the incident had nothing to do with his departure from CAA. “I made an over-familiar gesture — a slap on the rear — which I intended as playful and not in any sexual way whatsoever,...

Exclusive: Ali Abbasi has signed with UTA. The filmmaker coming off The Apprentice will continue his career with the agency repping him in all areas in the U.S. and continues to be repped by Lark in the UK.
Abbasi last was repped by CAA. Deadline revealed that the filmmaker got caught up in a bad moment at a Golden Globes afterparty where, as he subsequently stated in an apology, what he considered a “playful slap on the rear” of an unnamed star he considered a friend made the actor very angry. Fallout ensued.
Abbasi’s apology rang sincere – the incident shows it is best to not overindulge at these Hollywood parties and that you can’t die of embarrassment. Red carpet styling can’t make a bad movie good, but it can make a good one hard to ignore. An attention-grabbing look can center a project in an elevated conversation that can drive box office, awards and, yes, clothing sales.
That’s because of stylists. Out of the hundreds of red carpet tastemakers working in Hollywood, the ones on this list — coincidentally THR’s 15th since debuting the franchise in 2011 — are selected based on several factors. Because this is The Hollywood Reporter, the star power of the clients the stylists work with, the aesthetics they present on the red carpet, and the influence they wield — note Law Roach and Zendaya getting the internet to obsess over every Challengers fit — are paramount. And let’s be honest: Saint Laurent received more attention from Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldaña on the red carpet than from actually producing Emilia Pérez, the film they were in.

Deadpool & Wolverine opened with Wade Wilson pulling off some impressive dance moves to the tune of Nsync's "Bye Bye Bye." However, it wasn't Ryan Reynolds in the suit; instead, dancer Nick Pauley took on the role of the McU's "Dancepool."

Mikey Madison was already starting to get a lot of attention thanks to her lead performance in Sean Baker's Anora, but Sunday's surprise Best Actress Oscar win is certain to make the 25-year-old a highly in-demand star in Hollywood.

We don't have much to go on, but scooper Daniel Richtman is reporting that Madison is "being considered" for an MCU role.
It's always worth keeping in mind that Marvel Studios meets with and reaches out to a lot of talent (it might be quicker to list the people that haven't been up for a part at one point or another), so this is far from a guarantee that Madison is even in talks with the studio.

Major studios are sure to have reached out already, and we're now hearing that Madison could be in line to play a character in an upcoming Marvel Studios project.
We don't have much to go on, but scooper Daniel Richtman is reporting that Madison is "being considered" for an MCU role.

Kieran Culkin has certainly come a long way since portraying Kevin McCallister’s bed-wetting younger sibling, Fuller, in the holiday classic Home Alone (1990). Culkin is now a member of the inclusive Oscar club (Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role) thanks to his win at the 97th Academy Awards, and his real-life older brother, Macaulay Culkin, couldn’t help but shed a tear over the momentous occasion. He said in an interview with Vanity Fair (below):
"I cried. And I was like, 'I’m going to see you later.'"
The elder Culkin admitted during his red carpet interview at Vanity Fair’s Academy Awards afterparty that he only watched the Best Supporting Actor portion of the Oscars ceremony, which turned out to be the very first category to be awarded on Sunday, Mar. 2. The Home Alone icon also revealed that he had no doubt his baby...

Kickstarter, the crowdfunding platform designed to support creative endeavors, has named Taylor K. Shaw head of film outreach as the company steps up efforts to court industry professionals to use its service to finance production and related expenses.
Shaw is an independent producer and entrepreneur who founded animation firm Bwa Studios, which has produced content and marketing materials for HBO, Netflix, Hulu, Mattel and Sony Music, among others. The Brooklyn-based executive is in the midst of a film festival tour to spread the word about her role as the liaison who can guide experienced filmmakers on using the tools that Kickstarter provides. On the latest episode of Variety podcast “Strictly Business,” Shaw explains that the company’s pitch to industry pros is that Kickstarter is not only a means of generating financing, it’s also a vehicle for fan engagement.

Kieran Culkin just made history with his first ever Oscar nomination and win for his performance in A Real Pain. However, his speech seems to have sparked a weird controversy.

Culkin has been experiencing a phenomenal award season with a sweeping victory on almost all major Award functions. As such, his emergence as the victor in this year’s Oscars should have been marked as the best end possible to an otherwise spectacular season.
While it accomplished that, his acceptance speech somehow ended up at the center of a controversy. Interestingly, though, the debate around his speech seems to have born out of nothing but misunderstanding on both feuding factions.

Two Years Before ‘The Apprentice,’ Jeremy Strong Starred in Another Movie Featuring the Trump Family

When tackling the thorniest and most complicated subjects of contemporary American life in film, we must call in the services of our most fearless actor, Jeremy Strong. Following his tour de force on HBO as the heir apparent to CEO of Waystar Royco in Succession, Strong quickly announced himself as a perennial film actor with his equally triumphant and mesmerizing performance in The Apprentice. While the film was treated as a hot-buttoned, inflammatory look at Donald Trump, released about a month before he was elected President of the United States, it was Strong's performance as Roy Cohn that stole the show. Two years earlier, Strong also dabbled in commentary on the Trump family in Armageddon Time, an overlooked coming-of-age drama that looks at the family more abstractly, but James Gray's film is just as biting.

Some people truly know how to give us a memorable moment. And a stage like that at the 2025 Oscars is certainly the place to give or — or at least attempt to give it. Some speeches were entertaining, others informative. Most all of them were emotional, but only one speech managed to "win" the night as the most-watched Oscars speech, an honor that belongs to he of ample faith, Kieran Culkin. The winner of this year's Best Supporting Actor statue at the Academy Awards also managed to win the night when it came to speeches, charming folks with his anecdotes and off-the-cuff energy.
His speech may not have been the longest — that, um, honor goes to Adrien Brody — but it was definitely the one that gained the most laughs and online views. According to a list originally rounded up by TheWrap (which we confirmed with our own research), Kieran Culkin's acceptance speech had everything,...

Kieran Culkin is an Oscar winner – Who would’ve thought? The child who made every heart melt with his adorable presence in Home Alone and pretty much everyone miserable as Roman Roy in Succession did it again in Jesse Eisenberg’s A Real Pain. With an incredibly moving performance that keeps the viewers hooked from minute 1, Culkin proves worthy of the belated Oscar.

However, if the 42-year-old had had his way, A Real Pain would have never materialized, and there would be no award season riddled with hilarious bits and speeches from Kieran Culkin as he blazes past one ceremony to the next. Diagnosed with a case of cold feet, the Succession actor refused to do the role – that is, until Emma Stone blackmailed him into getting back on board.

Last night's Academy Awards show was a relatively scandal free affair, but one particular joke did result in some gasps from the celeb-filled audience in attendance.
At one point, O'Brien introduced the heroic members of the LA Fire Department who battled this year’s devastating Palisades and Eaton wildfires, and used the opportunity to slip in a few of his... harsher gags.
“Now, I know you’re going to find this hard to believe, but there are some jokes even I’m not brave enough to tell,” said the host before adding. “On behalf of myself, would you please read what’s in the prompter? Remember — everyone in this audience has to laugh; these are heroes!”

Now that the gold dust is settling on a long awards season, it is time to look forward to what’s next.
For Kieran Culkin that means heading to Broadway for the most recent staging of Glengarry Glen Ross, while this summer is likely occupied with filming on the third Dune movie for Timothee Chalamet. Elsewhere, awards break-outs like Anora’s Mikey Madison and Yura Borisov have yet to announce their next projects but are getting a lot of interest from studios and directors.
Here’s what the best actor and actress nominees have coming up.

My relationship with the Oscars almost feels like one of those bad habits I cannot break. More than a handful of times, I have concluded for my own sake and sanity that I was done taking the Academy seriously. Yet, somehow, every year as the ceremony creeps closer, I tend to convince myself, and those around me, that this time will be different.
Despite my relatively cynical take on these things, one not entirely limited to the Oscars, I let myself get sucked back in, time and again. The absence of nominations for Challengers and All We Imagine as Light should have been the first red flag of this year, but I still held out some hope.
The most surprising part of the 97th Academy Awards, however, was that there weren’t that many surprises at all – or at least not the kind I was hoping for. Almost all of...

The Academy Awards took place yesterday evening and, as per usual, the results have split opinions. Anora was the surprise Best Picture winner, with Wicked and Conclave failing to keep the momentum going following other recent award ceremonies.
Conan O'Brien hosted this year's and his performance of "I Won't Waste Time" was accompanied by surprise appearances from Dune: Part Two's Sandworm and Deadpool & Wolverine's Dancepool.
We don't know who was in the suit, though the Merc with the Mouth - who O'Brien reminded us wasn't among the nominees - pulled off some familiar Backstreet Boys-inspired dance moves before making his exit.
Ryan Reynolds initially embarked on a pretty robust "FYC" campaign for Deadpool & Wolverine, though it quickly lost momentum. The movie, which was a box office hit, wasn't exactly considered a critical darling with 78% on Rotten Tomatoes.
You may recall that were was some chatter about Reynolds...

The Oscars ceremony Sunday evening kept within the mold of prior awards ceremonies this year, steering clear of politics and avoiding even name-dropping Donald Trump. There was a brief zinger by host Conan O’Brien, spurred by trophies won by “Anora”: “Two wins already, I guess Americans are excited to see somebody finally stand up to a powerful Russian.” That evoked Trump’s characterization of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as a “dictator,” as well as the tense media spectacle of the pair’s White House meeting earlier this week to discuss America’s foreign aid amid Russia’s invasion of the country.
But apart from that, the host and presenters dodged name-dropping Trump at all, even while introducing acting nominees Jeremy Strong and Sebastian Stan, who were representing a Trump biopic in “The Apprentice.” The evening kept with the tone set by January’s Golden Globes, the first major televised awards ceremony of the season,...

Anora picks up five Oscars, in a surprisingly mixed Oscars 2025. Here’s the run down of what won and what didn’t.
Well, the Oscars has happened again, and perhaps now we can all get back to normal for a while.
This year’s statuette season was interesting enough given that there was no clear frontrunner like last year, when Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer dominated the awards race from start to finish. Still, set against the backdrop of the the hugely destructive Californian wildfires, it still all seemed a little superfluous at times. Meanwhile, The Brutalist director Brady Corbet provided an insight into the state of the non-blockbuster film business when he revealed that not being paid for being on a months-long awards trail meant he was living hand to mouth.
Still, fancy garments were donned and some statuettes were duly dished out and the 2025 Oscars.

Kieran Culkin has long been regarded as one of the finest actors of his generation. This isn’t too surprising, considering he comes from a family deeply rooted in Hollywood. His journey in the industry started decades ago when he played a supporting role in the Home Alone movies. Over the years, he’s taken on a variety of characters, each more impressive than the last.
Most recently, he became the talk of the town for his role in A Real Pain, which had audiences and critics raving. When the biggest night in Hollywood arrived, no one doubted that he would take home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. And he did!

After a chaotic and, at times unpredictable awards season, it all came down to this –– the big show. Hosted by Conan O'Brien, the 97th Academy Awards happened Sunday evening in Los Angeles, and Anora emerged as Best Picture.
With a surprising sweep of several major categories –– also including Best Director, Original Screenplay and Editing for filmmaker Sean Baker (who becomes the first person to win four Oscars in one night) and a somewhat surprising win for star Mikey Madison over Demi Moore –– Anora became the little indie that could.
This was a year that the academy members chose to spread the Oscar love –– The Brutalist's Adrien Brody was named Best Actor, while Lol Crawley won Cinematography and Daniel Blumberg's score saw him take the stage for an emotional, nervous speech.
Wicked, meanwhile, won Costume Design and Production Design, Dune 2 took Sound and Visual Effects, while Emilia Pérez' Zoe...

Raise a glass to Oscars producers Raj Kapoor and Katy Mullan, who followed their Emmy Award-winning production of the 96th annual Academy Awards last year with an even better ceremony this year. The stars at the Oscars 2025 opted for maximum drama with their couture looks, their stylists having planned the best looks for last.
Trends quickly emerged on the red carpet at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood, from pastel hues, such as the Dior gowns worn by Mikey Madison and Monica Barbaro, to high-drama sculptural gowns, notably the pink satin and tulle gown designed for Ariana Grande by Schiaparelli creative director Daniel Roseberry. At the other end of the spectrum, black gowns also ruled, including the black silk crepe Louis Vuitton gown worn by Ana de Armas, and Miley Cyrus’ custom high-neck McQueen gown. Squarely in the middle of that color palette, who made bold statements with red? Colman Domingo’s vivid Valentino suit stood out, as did Gal Gadot’s lush satin ballgown with side pleated, designed by Prada.

The 97th Academy Awards have wrapped and the entire 2025 Oscars winners list has been unveiled. We live updated the winners list throughout the entire night as the statuettes were handed out at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
“Anora” won five of the six Oscars for which it was nominated: Best Picture, Best Director Sean Baker, Best Original Screenplay (also for Baker), Best Editor (Baker again), and Best Actress for Mikey Madison. the only category it lost was Yura Borisov’s nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
Anne Thompson’s final predictions were mostly right! It was undeniable that the Oscar race changed dramatically since the nominations were announced on January 23, and “Emilia Pérez” received 13 nods, the most ever for a non-English-language movie. The Jacques Audiard film ended up winning just two awards.
Indeed, when all was said and done, only the supporting categories were near-locks, as Kieran Culkin won Best...

The 97th Academy Awards ceremony has just finished up, and we have a full list of winners in all the major categories below.
The Oscars very rarely recognize superhero/comic book movies, but 2024 was a particularly bad year for the genre, so it was hardly surprising when even what would be widely regarded as the best of the bunch, Deadpool and Wolverine, didn't receive any nominations - though some feel the block-busting Marvel Studios team-up should have picked up a few in the technical categories.
Several movies we have covered were nominated in major categories, however, including Dune: Part Two, The Substance, and Wicked (all for Best Picture). In the end, though, it was Anora that wound up taking home surprise wins for Best Picture, Director (Sean Baker) and Best Actress (Mikey Madison).
One Cbm favorite, Guardians of the Galaxy, Star Trek and Avatar star Zoe Saldaña, did pick up...

Hollywood’s biggest night has come to an end, and as usual, the Academy Awards delivered plenty of memorable moments.
But as much as we loved the James Bond tribute and the hilarious monologue from first-time host Conan O’Brien, the winners and their acceptance speeches were the focus of the night.
Several deserving stars took home their very first Oscars, including Mikey Madison, who headlined the biggest winner of the night, the audacious sex work dramedy Anora.

The indie flick took home five awards, and director Sean Baker took the stage for a number of gracious speeches. But he and Mikey weren’t the only victors at the 97th Oscars.
So without further ado, here’s your full list of the night...

After months of hype, campaigning, predictions, pivots, and controversies large and small, the 2025 Oscars finally arrived to provide clarity in what seemed to be the most wide-open awards season in years.
But in the end it was all Anora. Sean Baker's film, about a Brooklyn sex worker who falls for the slacker son of a Russian oligarch, won five Oscars, including Best Picture, Mikey Madison for Best Actress (over presumptive favorite The Substance's Demi Moore), Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Editing. Baker accounted for four of those wins — picture, director, original screenplay, and editing — making history in the process.
Two-time Holocaust survivor Adrien Brody became a two-time Oscar winner, taking Best Actor for his turn as a Hungarian immigrant in The Brutalist. Brody used his acceptance speech to speak out against the charged political climate and attacks on underrepresented communities: "Let's fight for what's right... let's keep loving one another.

Whether it was Zoe Saldaña calling out her husband’s beautiful hair during her acceptance speech or June Squibb claiming that she’s really Bill Skarsgård in drag, the 97th Oscars on Sunday were chock-full of good, bag and fugly moments.
Here are all the moments that made us go hmmm.
So Good: Oscar gave a collective hug to fire victims by opening the show with a chill-inducing ode to our beloved L.A. with iconic moments from Rocky III, La La Land, Grand Canyon, La Bamba and The Big Lebowski, followed with gorgeous performances by Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande.
So bad it was good: It felt a little strange to transition out of such a sentimental opener to the image of “four-time Oscar viewer” Conan O’Brien crawling out of Demi Moore’s corpse.
