I learned about David Lynch’s passing in the most David Lynch possible way: doing jury duty. A fellow potential juror told me the news as we waited in the stark, Kafka-esque halls of L.A.’s Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice building. Instantly, the stone-faced bailiffs and unblinking prosecutors took on a subtle air of menace, as if I’d been sucked right into a cut scene from Twin Peaks or Lost Highway. When the Judge asked how I’d weigh eyewitness testimony, I couldn’t refrain from citing the power of framing in presenting evidence, or the inescapably unreliable nature of memory. The judge lectured me: “You do realize this is real-life, and not a television show?” I was quickly dismissed from jury duty.
Reading the odes to Lynch, his art, and the supremely unique notion of the “Lynchian” he left the world, many have lovingly called him a surrealist master.

Building on what is already the largest film-related collection in the world, comprised of more than 52 million items, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed some of their most recent acquisitions today, including the Studio Ghibli animation collection, which contains more than 80 pieces of original art by Hayao Miyazaki and Noboru Yoshida, as well as the studio’s Japanese movie posters and animator’s desk. Another hot ticket item, presented at the Academy Museum Gala on October 19 in Los Angeles, is Quentin Tarantino’s personal, handwritten script for “Pulp Fiction,” which won the Best Original Screenplay Oscar and celebrated its 30th anniversary this year.
Filmmakers Curtis Hanson, Nicole Holofcener, Barbara Kopple, Oliver Stone, and Paul Verhoeven also donated their personal collections to the Academy, which features production records, photographs, scripts, and more from films such as “L.A. Confidential,” “Harlan County, U.S.A,” “Platoon,” “Showgirls,” and “Enough Said.

Two decades ago, one jilted heart found its way to Italy as part of the iconic, genre-redefining film “Under the Tuscan Sun.” Starring Diane Lane as Frances, a San Francisco writer who jets to Europe after realizing her soon-to-be ex-husband is cheating on her, the 2003 film cemented the early aughts’ obsession with starting over again. “Under the Tuscan Sun” was based on a real-life Frances, author Frances Mayes to be exact, whose memoir was adapted by late writer-director Audrey Wells for the big screen.
Frances, newly jilted and with the emotional support of her best friend Patti (Sandra Oh), escapes both midlife crises and bad American men by traveling across the globe for a luxury vacation. She falls in love with a Tuscan villa and opts to renovate it while bonding with locals, including the seductive Marcello (Raoul Bova).

Gray Frederickson, the Oscar-winning producer who worked alongside Francis Ford Coppola on the Godfather trilogy, Apocalypse Now and One From the Heart in a collaboration that spanned more than four decades, has died. He was 85.
Frederickson died Sunday at his home in Oklahoma City after a battle with prostate cancer, his wife, Karen, told The Hollywood Reporter.
Frederickson shared the best picture Oscar in 1975 with writer-director-producer Coppola and producer Fred Roos for The Godfather Part II — the first of just two sequels to take the big prize — and the trio (and Tom Sternberg) were nominated again for Apocalypse Now (1979).
“I got on a winning horse. I was with Francis Coppola, who’s no slouch. I was lucky enough to be carried along with him,” Frederickson told The Oklahoman in a 2021 interview. “I got lucky with him, but he says he got lucky with me.

Apocalypse Now in 4K? After The Wild Bunch this is one title likely to get me to invest in a new format. Francis Coppola & John Milius’ Vietnam War epic may not be perfect, but it’s one of the most exciting movie experiences ever and one of the top achievements of the first film school generation of moviemakers. The release is agreeably all-inclusive: the original Road Show cut and the two revised versions are here along with the excellent making-of feature Hearts of Darkness. Re-tooled and polished up for picture and audio, this qualifies as a prime audio show-off disc too.

2014 will be blessed with two Patricia Highsmith adaptations (the other being Todd Haynes’ Carol). She’s certainly inspiring source material, serving as screenwriter Hossein Amini’s directorial debut. While his co-writing credit on 2013′s 47 Ronin was a bit of an eyebrow raiser (considering it’s from same author that adapted Drive into a screenplay), January promises to be an exciting film to keep an eye on.
Gist: A thriller centered on a con artist, his wife, and a stranger who try to flee a foreign country after one of them is caught up in the murder of a police officer.

Following his impressionistic look at the meaning of human existence in 2011's The Tree of Life, filmmaker Terrence Malick has broken his habit of vanishing from the movie scene for many years by bringing us To The Wonder.
Written and directed by Malick and arriving in UK cinemas on February 22, it stars Ben Affleck, Olga Kurylenko, Rachel McAdams and Javier Bardem.
A new poster (above) has been issued for the film, which is officially described as follows:
To The Wonder is the beautiful and acclaimed latest offering from Terrence Malick, the legendary director of The Tree of Life, Badlands and Days of Heaven.
The film is centred on Neil (Ben Affleck, Argo), a man who is torn between two loves: Marina (Olga Kurylenko, Quantum of Solace), the European woman who comes to United States to be with him, and Jane (Rachel McAdams, Midnight in Paris), the old flame he reconnects with from his hometown.

Since 2011′s Drive, Hossein Amini’s has been striking the iron while it is hot – his name is on a foursome of titles in Our Kind of Traitor, 47 Ronin, 2012′s Snow White and the Huntsman and this globe trotter thriller. On the Road‘s Viggo Mortensen and Kirsten Dunst topline a tale that will definitely look the part – here’s hoping that his debut churns out a Tinker/Ripley/Constant Gardner type.

The work of author Patricia Highsmith has long been looted by filmmakers for inspiration. Her dark, psychological stories of crime and avoiding punishment, including Strangers on a Train and the Ripley series, have been made into movies by directors as revered as Hitchcock and Wim Wenders. Until now, though, her 1964 book The Two Faces of January has received comparatively little attention. That all changes now. With a great cast (Oscar Isaac seems to be one of the new “that guys,” popping up in small and large roles in a great number of recent releases) and an intriguing premise, this film is starting off with a promising pedigree. We’ll see if it comes to something worthwhile, but for now, have a look at the first promotional image released.

- Quick Links > Sleuth > Kenneth Branagh > Jude Law > Michael Caine > Sleuth (1972) What do you do if you find out your wife is having an affair? Why ask the bloke over for dinner of course. That’s the premise for the remake of the 1972 Academy Award® nominated Sleuth set for release in 2007. Michael Caine is on board for this reprise, but this time he plays thriller-writer Adam Wyke, the scorned husband and socialite who concocts a scheme to get revenge on his wife’s hairdresser (Jude Law), with whom she’s having the affair. In the original film Caine played the lover. The ensuing chaos involves deceptions and counter-deceptions where each man tries to outwit the other. The project will be co-produced by Law under his Riff Raff Productions banner with Tom Sternberg and Simon Halfont. Law came onto the project 3 years ago when financier Castle Rock first purchased rights to the play version.
