It’s been a wild ride for “Scavengers Reign,” the critically acclaimed adult animated sci-fi series, which was canceled by Max in May and got a second chance at Netflix on May 31, where it solidified its cult standing just in time for Emmy voters to make it the dark horse in the Outstanding Animated Program race. However, we’ll have to see if it’s enough to greenlight a Season 2 from creators Joseph Bennett and Charles Huettner.
But then the whole point of “Scavengers Reign” was to break free from every other adult animated series. It’s a mind-bending sci-fi adventure about a deep space freighter crew stranded on the beautiful yet deadly alien planet, Vesta, whose intertwining ecosystems of exotic flora and fauna pull them into the organic machinery alongside the imaginative creatures.

The sci-fi genre has always been one of the most beloved among cinephiles as it gives us a new look at a particular technology or our world. There was a time when Max (formerly known as HBO Max) was the place for peak sci-fi shows but after taking off Westworld and Raised by Wolves from the service, and since then it has been lacking a bit regarding sci-fi shows. But still, we picked the seven best sci-fi shows that we could find on Max.

Scavengers Reign’s reign at Max is over, but a second season could soon come to Netflix. Max has canceled the animated series after one season, but Netflix is open to ordering a second season and will make a decision about the show’s fate after Season 1 starts streaming on its service, Variety reported on Friday. Netflix will host Scavengers Reign’s first season alongside Max on May 31 in the U.S., the U.K., Ireland, and New Zealand, Variety added. Created by Joseph Bennett and Charles Huettner, Scavengers Reign follows the stranded crew of the damaged deep-space freighter Demeter 227 as they fight to survive on a beautiful yet dangerous planet. The voice cast includes Sunita Mani, Wunmi Mosaku, Alia Shawkat, Bob Stephenson, and Ted Travelstead. The series earned rave reviews from critics. “The further [the Demeter 227 crew members] go, the more the gorgeously animated world integrates them into its environment as they learn...

The opening credits sequence of Scavengers Reign is heavy with doom, with images of the Demeter, an interstellar freighter whose wreckage orbits an alien planet, dissonantly set to peaceful classical music. Bodies float in the vacuum of space, escape pods burn up in the atmosphere, and the leaping flames of a sun hint at the cause of the disaster. It’s a perfect encapsulation of the series that follows, a superb survival story depicting both the planet’s natural beauty and the violent, horrible ends it can visit upon the people who encounter it.
Rendered in a detailed 2D style by the prolific animation studio Titmouse, each of the show’s 12 half-hour episodes cuts between multiple perspectives. After all, the Demeter’s few survivors are scattered in different terrestrial environments, unaware of one another’s existence, and the series delights in foregrounding their often ingenious use of the local ecosystem to survive.

"We just can't help the instinct to give meaning to things we don't understand..." Indeed, we always fall for this. Max has revealed their stellar official trailer for an animated sci-fi series called Scavengers Reign, created by animation filmmakers Joe Bennett & Charles Huettner based on their own short. I can't wait to watch! This exquisite adventure is about a crew exploring a "hostile world allowed to thrive without human interference" on an "unforgiving alien planet." The visuals are stunning! Just look at all of this! Wowza. So many extraordinary shots in here, all on an entirely imagined distant world. The voice cast features Wunmi Mosaku, Bob Stephenson, Sunita Mani, Ted Travelstead, and Alia Shawkat. After their deep-space freighter is damaged, the stranded crew of the Demeter crash down on a beautiful yet dangerous planet. As the group uncovers the true nature of this place, they must do everything in their...

"This place... it's like a puzzle. Nothing really makes sense in the way we know it..." Max has revealed a teaser trailer for an animated sci-fi series called Scavengers Reign, created by animation filmmakers Joe Bennett & Charles Huettner based on their own short. This exquisite adventure is about a crew exploring a "hostile world allowed to thrive without human interference" on an "unforgiving alien planet." The visuals in this are absolutely incredible! While this look is common in graphic novels, I don't think we've ever seen anything like this on screen. The voice cast features Wunmi Mosaku, Bob Stephenson, Sunita Mani, Ted Travelstead, and Alia Shawkat. After their deep-space freighter is damaged, the stranded crew of the Demeter crash down on a beautiful yet dangerous planet. As the group uncovers the true nature of this place, they must do everything in their power to survive long enough to escape or be rescued.

Rob Schroeder’s sci-fi-tinged debut feature nests a lot of plots inside but doesn’t really add them up
A nocturnal traveller caught in a freaky menage a trois; an isolated mistress to a powerful senator; a technician in an experimental facility who seems to feed lines to characters in the other dramas. Rob Schroeder’s sci-fi-tinged feature debut expends much effort arranging these nested realities in a furiously scrambled film that makes you feel like you’re the test subject in Inception’s dream machine – and one who’s sniffed a few tubes of Bostik before bedtime. It’s a brave storyteller’s gambit, but there’s something finally underwhelming and convoluted about Ultrasound once it deigns to join the dots.

"Driving home late at night during a heavy rainstorm, Glen experiences car trouble. Near where his car gets stuck, he spots a house, knocks on the door and is greeted by an oddly friendly middle-aged man, Arthur, and his younger wife, Cyndi. The strange couple pours him a drink, and then more drinks, followed by an unexpected offer that Glen can’t refuse. Elsewhere, a young woman, Katie, is feeling emotionally weighed down by a secret romantic arrangement that feels like a textbook case of gaslighting. And at the same time, in a nondescript research facility, medical professional Shannon begins questioning her role in a bizarre experiment, fearing that she’s doing more harm than good."

The sci-fi thriller follows Glen (Vincent Kartheiser), who is stranded by two flat tires on a rainy night and must seek help at a nearby house. There, he’s welcomed in by Art (Bob Stephenson), who cajoles him into sleeping with his younger wife Cyndi (Chelsea Lopez). The 2021 Fantasia Film Festival wrapped a little over a week ago now, and today I’ve got a pair of reviews on tap from the fest that feature two truly audacious genre-bending projects that I highly recommend fans keep an eye out for in the coming months. So, read on to check out my thoughts on Phil Tippett’s stop-motion masterpiece Mad God and the twisty-turny sci-fi thriller Ultrasound from Rob Schroeder.
Mad God: A film 30 years in the making, Phil Tippett’s Mad God is truly a one-of-a-kind cinematic experience that I’d liken to meeting the maniacal and menacing love child of Ray Harryhausen, Hieronymus Bosch, and The City of Lost Children. Like an esoteric descent into the deepest, darkest pits of hell, Mad God is a haunting journey highlighting the atrocities of war, the drain of capitalism, and the danger of politics as it follows a...

As Glen (Vincent Kartheiser) stumbles through the darkness and the rain away from his car, which has gone off the road after hitting a piece of wood with nails in, he sees something that shouldn't be there: a cluster of objects seemingly abandoned on the ground. It's the sort of detail one quickly forgets about. Our minds are very good at erasing anomalies and filling in gaps, which is why we often fail to spot mistakes in films and argue over exactly what happened in things we've just seen. It's part of how we contrive to make sense of the world around us even in deeply unsettling situations.
Fortunately for Glen, who is shivering with cold, there's a house nearby and its owners are welcoming. Art (Bob Stephenson), who explains that they rarely get company, encourages him to enjoy a few drinks. Then he suggests that Glen sleep with his much.

There’s a limit to how long a movie can mess with viewers’ minds, and “Ultrasound” eventually crosses that threshold. A thriller whose discomforting early going provides few clues to the head-spinning madness lying in wait, director Rob Schroeder’s feature debut channels a host of acclaimed masters while attempting to craft a uniquely beguiling dreamscape in which nothing is as it appears. , although the reward for such perseverance isn’t enough to make up for its prior, aggravating puzzle-box obliqueness.

“My plan was to die before the money ran out” has become the anthem and tagline of the Sony Pictures Classics’ French Exit starring Michelle Pfeiffer as a 60-year-old penniless Manhattan socialite – a role that has been earning her plenty of awards season buzz.
Opening in theaters today before expanding nationwide April 2, French Exit is directed by Azazel Jacobs and written by Patrick deWitt, who wrote the bestselling novel on which the movie is based. In it, Pfeiffer plays Frances Price whose life hasn’t gone exactly as planned after her dead husband’s (Tracy Letts) inheritance is gone. She cashes in the last of her possessions and decides to live out her twilight days anonymously in a borrowed apartment in Paris with her directionless son Malcolm (Lucas Hedges) and a cat named Small Frank — who may or may not embody the spirit of her husband.

Just a few weeks since Suburbicon arrived at the multiplex (and just as it heads to the “second-run” theatres), another film directed by an actor opens. That’s about all that the two flicks have in common. The thespian behind the camera this time is the talented Greta Gerwig. At the start of the new century she was dubbed by many as the new “indie queen” with her performances in several quirky low-budget films (most shot in the NYC area). In the last decade or so she’s had small roles in studio films (Jackie), but Ms. Gerwig’s heart seems to be with “underdog” cinema. On many of these projects she’s been stretching her creative muscles, first by writing many (two of her most acclaimed films were co-written with Noah Baumbach) and for one she co-directed with Joe Swanberg (Nights And Weekends). This new release is her first (the first of many,...

The new "Twin Peaks" isn't slated to debut on Showtime until 2017, but a flurry of speculation about it happened last week with a tweet from Go For Locations indicating that filming had wrapped on the "first two seasons" of the series.
The episode count for the David Lynch-directed series was always in question, but that tweet suggested we'd be getting even more episodes than originally planned. Said tweet has since been deleted, so we'll have to wait to see how that pans out.
in the meantime in more official news, Showtime, Lynch and Mark Frost has released the official cast list for the new series with a whopping 217 names across the various episodes - a list that includes some real surprise big name inclusions such as Monica Bellucci, Michael Cera, Naomi Watts, Tim Roth, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Eddie Vedder, Ashley Judd, Ernie Hudson, Jim Belushi, Richard Chamberlain, Laura Dern,...

Academy Award nominated filmmaker David Fincher is renowned for many things – tense drama, intriguing plot twists, and even the odd Grammy-winning music video – but comedy has, so far, not been one of his signature moves. This is about to change, however, as HBO have handed a series order to Fincher, for his 1980s-set music video comedy series – currently known as Video Synchronicity.
The half hour show is led by Robby – a young, naïve, good-natured college drop-out, who decides to relocate to Hollywood and achieve his dream of shooting an epic science fiction movie. When the situation proves itself to be somewhat more challenging than he had previously assumed, he gets himself a job at a company that produces music videos. His position as production assistant causes him to cross paths with many different characters – from directors to on-screen talent, and from the lowliest crew member to the highest paid executive...

After the box office success of his last feature, "Gone Girl," no one would blame David Fincher for staying in the film world. Instead, he's heading back to TV with a new "Entourage"-esque series about a kid who drops out of college to make movies in Hollywood, only to be hired as a production assistant at a company that makes music videos. Read More: Netflix Ratings Report: How Many People Are Watching 'House of Cards,' 'Daredevil' and More? According to The Hollywood Reporter (and unconfirmed by HBO), "Video Synchronicity" (previously known as "Living on Video") will bring Fincher back to the roles of TV director and executive producer. The series is based on his own idea, and Fincher will write the first season alongside Bob Stephenson (who had bit parts in "Zodiac" and "Fight Club") and Rich Wilkes (who previously wrote "Airheads," "Glory Daze," and "xXx"). Charlie Rowe,...

Up until The Social Network (2010), when a version of this article first appeared, David Fincher was, moderately, a creature of habit when it came to casting. Certain character actors would pop up in miniature roles in more than one film though only one star was a recurring lead (Brad Pitt). Since then it's been more of a free for all with (mostly) new faces in his films.
For Gone Girl it's all new faces but for three men who you'll miss if you blink:
Darin Cooper, Brett Leigh, and Lee Norris
Brett Leigh appears as a nervous intern (he was previously a Phoenix Club hazer in The Social Network); Lee Norris, best known for "One Tree Hill" and "Boy Meets World," shows up as "Officer Washington" after a gig in Zodiac; and Darin Cooper, who played one of Facebook's lawyers in The Social Network, returns as "Moustached Man"

If the hideous sweater, disgusting mane, and title didn't tip you off, Paul Rudd's character in Our Idiot Brother is supposed to be an idiot. Though the first trailer gave us a good idea of the dunderheadedness we can expect, this glimpse at a scene between Paul Rudd and Movieline pal Bob Stephenson indicates that the titular dude's stupidity knows no bounds.

Bob Stephenson may not be what you'd call a household name, but he might be the closest thing we have to a household face. Stephenson has appeared in countless commercials and played Deputy Jimmy Taylor on the CBS drama Jericho and Walter Bailey in the ABC series The Forgotten. He was the shy slob who dated Jennifer Aniston in Friends With Money and the airport security guard who confronted Edward Norton about his vibrating suitcase in Fight Club. (He's appeared in four David Fincher films, in fact.) And beginning this month, the Oxnard-born actor is about to get a lot more big-screen time with his one-two-three-four box-office punch Larry Crowne, Our Idiot Brother, Hick (with Blake Lively and Alec Baldwin) and Lorene Scafaria's feature debut Seeking a Friend for the End of the World.

I really like that poster. The sky blue with the alternating thick/thin sans serif font and the jarringly bright yellow, drawing your eye to it and down towards the pair of movie stars at bottom right. Julia Roberts looks ecstatic and Tom Hanks suavely cool on his scooter—this could be a gem of a film with some sophisticated style.
Alas, though, it is not. After starting with the charming joke of a middle-aged man living and breathing his retail sales job, picking up the trash in the parking lot as he arrives before any of his co-workers, it slowly devolves into tedium. The titular Larry Crowne, Hanks is a bit of a goof, perhaps with a few screws loose, but definitely left of center on the maturity level. I guess working with kids half his age will cause that to happen, leaving his life as a 20-year Navy...
