In April 2023, the independent horror flick Nefarious earned just over a million dollars and placed tenth at the box office on its opening weekend. The movie hit theaters around the same time as other horror movies like The Pope's Exorcist, Evil Dead Rise, Scream IV, and Renfield; and with such stiff competition, it's impressive that this low-budget indie movie did so well. The picture, which is currently in Amzone Prime Video's Top 10 most popular movies, is based on a two-book series by Steve Deace and was written and directed by Chuck Konzelman and Cary Solomon (the duo behind God's Not Dead and Unplanned). But despite the film's distinctly Christian label, Nefarious rises above the general clichés associated with faith-based productions and stands out as something increasingly more interesting than its religious contemporaries.

God made man in his own image, and then man defied His orders, so man was cast out from His garden—or so the story goes in the Bible. Directors Chuck Konzelman and Cary Solomon made a movie based on this, and it’s the 2023 supernatural horror Nefarious. Jordan Belfi plays psychiatrist Dr. James Martin, who goes into a prison to decide whether a criminal (Sean Patrick Flannery) is mentally fit to be executed, but realizes he’s gotten much more than he bargained for. Shot almost entirely inside one room, the movie raises questions about man’s choices and actions with references to heaven and hell, but it quickly starts reeking of propaganda and not so much horror. Here’s what happens in Nefarious.

Nefarious tells the tale of a convicted serial killer waiting on the day of his execution. On that day he has a last minute, court-ordered psychiatric evaluation. The doctor then needs to decide if this man is who he claims to be – a demon, Nefarious, who quite happily wants the execution to go ahead.
Much of the movie, possibly about 70% of it, is just the serial killer, played by Sean Patrick Flanery and the doctor (James Martin), played by Jordan Belfi, talking to each other across a table in an otherwise empty room. It’s a battle of wits and character, as the doctor believes he can’t be fooled into calling this man crazy, until he’s not...

(Uncut Gems with Adam Sandler had a $105k PSA on five screens in 2019 — a limited-opening record at the time.)

“Unplanned” is exactly the movie you expect it to be, which is why it’s making healthy profits despite minimal advertising and overwhelmingly negative reviews. Like other faith-based films before it — the “God’s Not Dead” series, “Heaven Is for Real,” and “I Can Only Imagine” all come to mind — Cary Solomon and Chuck Konzelman’s anti-abortion drama is preaching to the choir. Pure Flix Entertainment knows that its self-selecting audience would rather have its existing views affirmed rather than challenged, a strategy they’re far from the first to employ. Christian moviegoers are hardly the only demographic guilty of wanting to see their ideals reflected back at them, as evidenced by the reception to any number of toothless prestige pictures.
But what about when viewers like a movie or TV series despite its values, not because of them? Do conservative “Game of Thrones” obsessives resent the fact that it...

Dedicated to every woman who ever had an abortion and regretted it for the rest of her life, "Unplanned" is the new dramatic feature written, directed by Chuck Konzelman and Cary Solomon, based on a memoir by Abby Johnson, a former 'Planned Parenthood' employee, starring Ashley Bratcher, Brooks Ryan, Robia Scott, Jared Lotz and Emma Elle Roberts, now playing:
"...'Abby Johnson' one of the youngest 'Planned Parenthood' clinic directors in the Us, where baby body parts are routinely harvested, is asked to assist in an ultrasound-guided abortion at thirteen weeks gestation.
"After witnessing the gruesome procedure, Johnson becomes an anti-abortion activist and founds a group to assist former Planned Parenthood employees who turned against abortion after similar experiences..."

After having its TV spots shut out by my most mainstream cable networks and its Twitter account frozen for two-three hours yesterday, PureFlix’s anti-abortion feature Unplanned, which was slapped with an R rating by the MPAA, opened to $6.1M at 1,059 theaters, making it the second-best opening for the faith-based studio’s self-distributed titles after God’s Not Dead 2 ($7.6M).
While not a huge win by major studio standards, for the indie label which produced the $5M-$6M with co-financer Mike Lindell (the inventor of MyPillow), it’s an achievement, given the controversy the pic has weathered. Arguably, there hasn’t be an R-rated, faith-based movie since Mel Gibson’s 2004 The Passion of the Christ. Typically, faith-based movies do 2-3 times their domestic box office in TV and home ancillaries. It’s Lent, so it wouldn’t be a shocker if Unplanned legs out. “Unplanned” isn’t a good movie, but it’s effective propaganda — or, at least, it is if you belong to the group it’s targeting: those who believe that abortion in America, though a legal right, is really a crime. It’s hard to imagine the movie drawing many viewers outside that self-selected demographic. “Unplanned” preaches to the pro-life choir, and it does so by making a case against abortion that’s absolutist and extreme, at certain points twisting “facts” into a narrative of conspiracy. (Planned Parenthood is portrayed as a corporation as profit-driven as Standard Oil.)
But “Unplanned” also does a skillful job of using religious piety to conceal its underlying political agenda. The film is based on a memoir by Abby Johnson, an anti-abortion activist who worked for eight years in a Planned Parenthood clinic in Bryan, Texas. A new anti-abortion movie that will center on the organization Planned Parenthood has been shot in secret and will arrive in theaters next year. The movie, titled Unplanned, comes from filmmakers Chuck Konzelman and Cary Solomon, who serve as the project's writers and directors. They previously collaborated on the very successful faith-based movies God's Not Dead and I Can Only Imagine which, working from tiny budgets, went on to become big successes at the box office.
Unplanned was shot for a budget of $6 million and recently wrapped filming in Oklahoma. The movie will tell the story of Abby Johnson. She served as clinic director at Planned Parenthood and claims to have helped facilitate 22,000 abortions before leaving the organization in 2009. Johnson's decision to leave came after watching via ultrasound as an abortion was performed. Co-director Chuck Konzelman had this to say about the movie.

Cronk directed the movie from a script written by Cary Solomon and Chuck Konzelman, but the whole thing is actually based on Rice Broocks‘ book of the same name.
