Sick Girl is a comedy movie about a woman who lies about having cancer to bring her once close-knit friend group back together. Director Jennifer Cram transitioned from casting to directing after teaching herself how to write. She wrote the script for the movie 10 years ago. Nina Dobrev leads the cast as Wren, and her performance as a twisted character in a comedy was a departure from her previous work. Cram didn't initially have Dobrev in mind for the role but thought she would be interesting to cast.

The movie follows a woman who feels her life has become a downward spiral due to the disconnect in her once extremely tight-knit friend group. Wren Pepper is in a pickle in screenwriter/director Jennifer Cram’s debut feature Sick Girl. Wren’s friends are quick to rally around her as she moves through her cancer journey. Unfortunately, Wren doesn’t really have cancer. She told a little white lie that suddenly morphed into a very big problem that just won’t go away.
What propelled Wren to tell that lie may be something most people can relate too, but nobody would actually admit to having cancer if it wasn’t true. That offbeat premise works in Sick Girl mostly because Cram doesn’t want the audience to sympathize with Wren, played by Nina Dobrev. The fun is in watching Wren writhe in guilt and shame. The result produces a middle-ground comedy that’s good for some escapist fun yet never fully reaches the high points you want it to.

Alex Familian, the editor and producer of Appendage, discusses his excitement about working on a relatable horror film that addresses anxiety and impostor syndrome. Familian explains that Appendage explores a unique blend of horror, comedy, and drama, creating a specific tone that he hasn't had the opportunity to work on before. The editing process for Appendage involved Adobe Premiere and After Effects, as well as collaborating closely with the VFX and Adr teams to enhance scenes and create an unsettling mood.
Adapted from an original Bite Size Halloween short, Appendage is currently available to stream on Hulu. The film follows a young fashion designer named, Hannah, who finds herself struggling for vindication in her work and home life. When a ghastly appendage sprouts from her body and wields her insecurities as weapons, Hannah begins to doubt the people she cares about most.

If you are going to do a so-called “hilarious” comedy dealing with cancer you better know how to do it. Unfortunately, writer/director Jennifer Cram, for her first feature film in those jobs, does not knock it out of the park.
Sick Girl which stars Nina Dobrev as Wren, a bit of a mess of a 30ish woman whose spur-of-the-moment little white lie about having cancer spirals out of control, would need a satirist along the lines of an Adam McKay to actually pull off this misbegotten comedy which is simply more cringe-inducing than funny, and Cram, whose previous work has been in Casting just can’t find the right tone to make it work. The premise may have sounded good on paper but it quickly turns into a one-joke idea stretched way beyond its worth. Lionsgate is opening this Friday day and date in theatres and VOD, the latter...

“We’re barely ever together as a group,” Wren Cooper moans to her lifelong pals in Sick Girl, the hilarious feature film debut from Jennifer Cram. “That’s the way it goes,” one of Wren’s friends shoots back. Maybe not for long. In the madness of a frenetic gathering, Wren makes a startling announcement: “I have cancer!”
She doesn’t. And Wren herself may not really know why she just blurted it out, but between the thought that she may have peaked in high school and the fact that her now adult friends are seemingly slipping away, she’s desperate to keep the BFFs’ connection alive. Hilarity ensues of course.
The R-rated film stars Nina Dobrev as Wren, Wendi McLendon-Covey (The Goldbergs), Dan Bakkedahl (Veep), Brandon Mychal Smith (Four Weddings and a Funeral), and Sherry Cola (Good Trouble). Filmmaker Jennifer Cram shared more about Sick Girl with MovieWeb in this exclusive interview.

The horror movie Appendage takes everyday worries and turns them into a tangible entity that feeds off the protagonist's self-doubt. Director and writer Anna Zlokovic used practical effects to create the appendage, working closely with a special effects creature department. The heart of the horror in this story lies in its portrayal of universal mental health struggles, such as anxiety and depression, which many people can relate to.
Hulu's new movie Appendage uniquely approaches the horror genre by turning everyday worries into a tangible entity that thrives off its protagonist's self-doubt. Hannah is a resilient young fashion designer who aspires to be successful in her field and achieve the approval of her supervisor. However, the pressure to be perfect, combined with her deep-rooted insecurities, causes a vindictive appendage to grow from her body and give life to her greatest fears.

“You’re a pathetic freak,” groans the gruesome being chained to a post in the basement of an apartment building. The creepy thing — disfigured and looking like Gollum’s drinking buddy — is addressing Hannah, who has chained stashed the beast away. That doesn’t stop the creature from telling Hannah how awful she is, sentiments it possesses because it came from Hannah and has been feeding off her insecurities, growing stronger and more devious by the day.
These scenes and others even more creepy play out with freaky fun aplomb in Appendage, writer/director Anna Zlokovic’s feature film debut. Say what you will about this offbeat, darkly humorous horror thriller, but it’s certainly a wakeup call to pay attention to that gnawing critical voice inside of you, which can really get the better of you. In Appendage it does, and Hannah (Hadley Robinson of Little Women) is never the same.

The concept of turning successful short films into full-length features is quite popular. Although, for the horror genre, it fails to work in most cases. While the short may be riveting enough and deserving of rounds of applause, the film that comes out of it seems stretched out and vapid. The most prominent example of this happening has to be the 2016 downer Lights Out, which was based on a three-minute long short that scared the hell out of even the bravest of the brave. Hulu’s latest film, Appendage, happens to be a similar case, but in reverse.
Not only does the film version work, it actually upgrades the short that was released two years ago in the very popular “Bite Size Halloween” segment. Rachel Sennott, then a relatively new face and now a breakout star, has been replaced with Hadley Robinson. Although fans of the shorts might miss Sennott in the lead role,...

Writer-director Anna Zlokovic doesn't waste any time establishing the horror premise of her film Appendage. Immediately in the first scene, it's clear that there's something very wrong with aspiring fashion designer Hannah (Hadley Robinson), and things only get worse from there. So many modern horror movies rely on slow builds and vague hints that it's refreshing for Appendage to reveal its grotesque monster early on. The problem is that Zlokovic runs through so much plot so quickly that Appendage nearly exhausts its premise before it really gets going. The one-note allegory about a monstrous manifestation of the protagonist's anxieties and fears wears thin before Appendage is halfway over.
Even if its message is a bit strained, Appendage is still quite entertaining, especially when Zlokovic leans into its campier elements. Appendage introduces Hannah during a tense family dinner with her wealthy parents in the suburbs, as her mother takes passive-aggressive digs...

Written and directed by Anna Zlokovic, Appendage is a grotesque body horror film with a powerful message. It doesn’t take long to get started, with the film quickly introducing Hannah (Hadley Robinson), an up-and-coming fashion designer with a plethora of self-confidence issues, and the problem that arises after she is triggered by stress. Appendage has fantastic creature design and a layered, creative story that remains engaging even as its third act becomes a bit tedious.
Hannah is trying to get her designs into her boss’ spring show, and she’s under a lot of pressure to deliver a statement dress that is unique and will draw positive attention. In addition to a stressful job, Hannah has also been seeing her boyfriend (Brandon Mychal Smith) for six months and things are getting really serious between them. With so much on her plate, Hannah starts having pain on the site of her birthmark,...

The “evil twin” school of psychological metaphor has been a frequent device in horror fiction, and its familiarity does not much benefit the very literal-minded “Appendage.” Writer-director Anna Zlokovic’s first feature centers on a young Manhattanite whose insecurities manifest themselves in the form of a mini-me who becomes a serious usurping threat. This SXSW-launched Hulu Original is sufficiently polished to pass muster as a night’s streaming entertainment for undiscriminating genre fans. But despite the grotesque premise, its attack is a little too blunt to make much impact, whether taken as thinly-veiled satire or straight fantasy thriller.
Introduced chafing under the critical control of her waspish mother (Deborah Rennard) during a visit home to the suburbs, Hannah (Hadley Robinson) is a nice, talented, attractive twentysomething nonetheless driven by the sense that she’s got everything to prove. An aspiring fashion designer, she certainly gets negative reinforcement on that front from her employer,...

It turns out, the programming team isn’t finished!
SXSW announced another wave of film programming today, including an eighth Midnighter.
“Midnighters don’t need to be exclusively horror films, they just need to perk you up and get your blood pumping,” said Peter Hall, Film & TV Festival Programmer. “That’s why this year’s SXSW Midnighters class is a mix of horror, bone-crunching action, and mind-melting genre hybrids. Though their popularity peaked long before most of today’s actual teenagers were born, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles never really went away. We’re only six years removed from the most recent live-action film based on the pizza-loving reptiles, and it was just two months ago that a new Tmnt video game was released. Ant Ward and Andy Suriano’s “Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie,” which arrives on Netflix this week, is based on the animated series that aired on Nickelodeon from 2018 to 2020. While unlikely to bring any nostalgia-minded fans of the series’ early-’90s heyday back into the fold, “Rise” is a serviceable — if also forgettable — entry in the cowabunga canon.
It would be difficult to overstate how obsessed with ninjas and martial arts children were in the ’90s, with the franchise riding the same wave as “Mortal Kombat,” “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers” and the “3 Ninjas” movies.
