While many shows embrace the paperback melodrama, few can fully explore these themes while touching the larger discourse. Yet the 2020s have seen a spark in this subgenre, with The White Lotus and Succession successfully marrying drama, business, and sex to perfection. Rivals – a new British series based on the Jilly Cooper novel of the same name – tries to thread the needle. While stars David Tennant, Alex Hassell, and Aidan Turner all shine, the women often feel underserved. It’s a frustrating development, in part because the series makes a point to tell us how women are ignored and undermined outside their relationships with men.

Amazon Prime Video’s new series, A Very Royal Scandal, has Princess Beatrice steering clear of her father, Prince Andrew. The 36-year-old is reportedly “brokenhearted” over the show. It depicts the events leading up to the Duke of York’s infamous 2019 Newsnight interview. Now Beatrice is determined to stop being Andrew’s “peacemaker.”
Beatrice is ‘sick of being humiliated’ by Andrew
Being depicted in A Very Royal Scandal—similar to Netflix’s Scoop—has embarrassed Beatrice (via Ok! Magazine). The miniseries premiered on Sept. 19, 2024. Michael Sheen plays Andrew as he navigates allegations against him related to his Jeffrey Epstein association culminating in the interview.
Widely panned, the now-64-year-old royal found himself benched from official duties. Andrew also lost patronages and his Hrh (His Royal Highness) status.
A source described Beatrice as a “daddy’s girl” who is “sick of being humiliated.” The insider also claimed Andrew’s interview re-entering the news “devastated” her.

James Graham’s BBC crime drama “Sherwood” has been renewed for Season 3.
Graham is the talent behind projects including play “Dear England,” which is being adapted for the BBC, and “Quiz” starring Michael Sheen.
The drama, starring David Morrisey, is made by House Productions. The first two seasons are available in the U.K. on iPlayer and in the U.S. on streamer Britbox.
Clio Barnard (“Ali & Ava”) directed Season 2 alongside Tom George. As well as Morrissey, the series also stars Monica Dolan, David Harewood, Lorraine Ashbourne, Robert Lindsay, Perry Fitzpatrick, Christine Bottomley, Michael Balogun, Oliver Huntingdon, Bethany Asher and Lesley Manville.
“Sherwood” was inspired by the so-called “Shottingham” gang wars that blighted Nottinghamshire where Graham grew up.

The return of The Diplomat is on the way. After the Netflix political thriller ended on a big cliffhanger in season 1, here’s a look at what questions remain ahead of The Diplomat Season 2. Plus, a few that have been answered by a teaser trailer.
Unanswered: Is Allison Janney’s vice president a friend or foe in ‘The Diplomat’ Season 2?
New episodes of The Diplomat bring with them some new faces. Among the new additions to the cast is Oscar-winner Allison Janney. She plays Grace Penn, the U.S. vice president who Keri Russell’s U.S. ambassador Kate Wyler will replace, if all goes according to plan.
The question is, though, is Penn a friend or foe? The answer, as showrunner Debora Cahn told Entertainment Weekly, could surprise viewers.

Hot on the heels of an impressive showing at the Emmys, FX is hoping its newest anthology series, the uniquely American drama “American Sports Story,” will capture viewers’ attention in much the same way. The first installment is based on the podcast “Gladiator: Aaron Hernandez and Football Inc.” from The Boston Globe’s award-winning Spotlight team and Wondery. It traces Hernandez’s (Josh Rivera) rise and fall, from his days as a high school standout in Bristol, Conn., to his death in prison in 2017, two years after being convicted of murder.
Across 10 riveting episodes — the first two of which are streaming on Hulu — the series explores Hernandez’s troubled life and career, and the issues that influenced and came to define it, including the commodification of brown and Black athletes and the reckless disregard for player safety. It’s an indictment of one of America’s biggest cultural institutions, and...

The 2019 royal interrogation of Prince Andrew has become one of the most talked-about interviews ever. The heated Newsnight interview saw BBC journalist Emily Maitlis question the Duke of York about his friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and his possible involvement in it. The exchange in Buckingham Palace was Andrew's chance to prove his innocence... and it backfired, enormously.
The interview, which the 3-episode miniseries chronicles, was chased down by Maitlis and willingly sought after by Prince Andrew to clear his name and public image. The 50-minute exchange famously backfired for Andrew, after some rather peculiar alibis, and questionable statements -- the fact that he doesn't sweat and that he could perfectly recall exactly what he was doing on one random day from decades ago.
A Very Royal Scandal - Season 3 - Episode 303

Amazon enthusiastically announced the Sept. 19 release date for A Very Royal Scandal with the declaration, “The critically acclaimed A Very … Scandal anthology is back!”
My primary questions include: Was “Scandal” included so that nobody would think A Very Royal Scandal was, in some way, a part of a franchise that perhaps started with 1996’s A Very Brady Sequel? Does your average television viewer even accept the existence of the A Very Dot Dot Dot Scandal franchise? And, perhaps most sincerely, even if we acknowledge that the A Very Dot Dot Dot Scandal franchise exists, what does it mean? What are the unifying characteristics between 2018’s A Very English Scandal, 2021’s A Very British Scandal and now A Very Royal Scandal, a trio of limited series without an overlapping character, star, writer or director?

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for A Very Royal Scandal.] Over three episodes, Prime Video, in A Very Royal Scandal, tells a dramatization of journalist Emily Maitlis’ (Ruth Wilson) 2019 interview with Prince Andrew (Michael Sheen) regarding his relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and allegations of his own misconduct. We see 20 minutes of that hour-long conversation, with the rest of the series dedicated to what comes before and the fallout of it. As the series—which is now streaming—ends, Emily packs up her desk, having decided to leave the BBC, while Andrew is told he must live with the consequences of his actions. As the Queen’s Jubilee plays on the TV, both are at home, and then clips from the interview replay, with Emily asking for a message to Virginia Giuffre, who accused Andrew of sexual assault, and his non-response. The last shot is the photo of Virginia in the box of Emily...

When Prince Andrew invited BBC current affairs show “Newsnight” to interview him at Buckingham Palace in 2019, neither he – nor his interviewer Emily Maitlis – had any inkling that it would not only result in the British royal’s public disgrace, including being stripped of his titles and patronages, but would spawn two dramatizations within five years. (And it’s likely they won’t be the last).
The interview was, to put it plainly, seismic. Not just personally catastrophic for Andrew, who found himself effectively barred from public life after it aired, as well as paying out a multi-million-dollar settlement to his accuser Virginia Giuffre, but reverberated through the royal family all the way up to the monarch.
The outsize impact of that interview is something that Michael Sheen, who plays the prince in Prime Video’s “A Very Royal Scandal,” out on Thursday, has had ample time to contemplate. To get into the role,...

For decades, the British Royal Family managed to maintain a certain mystique and allure. Tabloid fodder and salacious stories leaked occasionally, but in the 1990s, the scandals surrounding Princess Diana and King Charles’ marriage almost caused the entire enterprise to collapse. However, the royals seemed to hit new heights in popularity in 2018 when Prince Harry married Meghan, Duchess of Sussex. Yet, just a few short years later, it all crumbled. Queen Elizabeth II was ailing, Prince Harry and Meghan exited the royal family and Prince Andrew’s long relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein resurfaced. Created by Jeremy Brock, Prime Video’s limited series “A Very Royal Scandal” is a frank and engaging examination of the shocking interview between Prince Andrew (Michael Sheen) and journalist Emily Maitlis (Ruth Wilson) that would lead to the Duke of York’s ousting from public life and define Maitlis’ career.

A Very Royal Scandal tells the story of one of the more headline-making royal interviews in recent memory. The limited series focuses on Prince Andrew’s disastrous 2019 chat with BBC journalist Emily Maitlis, where he addressed disturbing allegations around his relationship with notorious sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Premiering on Prime Video just months after a similar Netflix film called Scoop, the show knew viewers would come expecting juicy dramatizations of that infamous pow-wow. But it aimed higher, using its three-hour runtime to offer deeper context on the key players and weigh bigger questions stirred up by this scandal.
The series covers all the intrigue leading up to that fateful Newsnight sit-down between Maitlis and Prince Andrew, from the prince dismissing warnings to avoid the interview to Maitlis’s determination to secure it.
It recreates tense moments from their conversation and depicts fallout as the prince’s world unravels while Maitlis faces celebrity’s consequences.

It could be said that A Very Royal Scandal was a documentation of whatever happened in 2019 with Prince Andrew and its aftermath. Almost all the characters shown in the series are inspired by real-life people, though it is possible that the director might have taken certain creative liberties in portraying them and dramatized the narrative just to increase the entertainment quotient. So, let’s get to know these characters a little more and find out what happened to them after the disastrous BBC interview that shook the entire nation.

I personally haven’t had the chance to watch Netflix’s Scoop, a film that came out around 6 months ago about the infamous interview of the Duke of York that essentially led to his dismissal from the royal family. But it is still shocking to me that, within those 6 months, we’ve got a 3-part series on Amazon Prime about the exact same moments that, I suppose, completely changed the public viewpoint on the Queen’s favorite son. Of course, you can imagine the show and film bear close resemblance in terms of characterization and plot itself, but why then should one watch A Very Royal Scandal? Well, firstly, it boasts of Emily Maitlis herself as an executive producer. For the uninitiated, A Very Royal Scandal explores Maitlis’ explosive interview with Prince Andrew about his friendship with the sex offender Jeffrey Epstein (a little after his death in prison) and...

Is there anything to be gained from watching a second take on Prince Andrew’s infamous 2019 interview about his relationship with sex offender Jeffrey Epstein? Surprisingly, the answer is yes.
Prime Video’s three-episode series A Very Royal Scandal premieres Sept. 19. It arrives just months after Netflix’s Scoop, released in April 2024. But even though the two cover similar ground, the new drama offers a fresh interpretation of the one-on-one conversation that effectively ended the Duke of York’s royal career. November 16, 2019 marked a pivotal moment in the recent history of the British royal family. On that ill-fated day, the BBC’s flagship news program, Newsnight, aired an hour-long interview between journalist Emily Maitlis and Prince Andrew, the Duke of York. The interview, which swiftly turned the prince into a meme sensation for all the wrong reasons, ultimately led to his eventual removal from royal duties and ex-communication from public life.
Amazon’s three-part series A Very Royal Scandal, executive-produced by Maitlis and directed by Julian Jarrold, dramatizes the events leading up to, during, and following that interview. It focuses specifically on allegations that Andrew (Michael Sheen) engaged in sexual relations with a minor, who was trafficked by convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein (John Hopkins). Given how recent and well-documented these events are, one might wonder what a dramatization like this could add to the public record. Unfortunately, the answer is not very much.

Michael Sheen and Ruth Wilson star in a dramatisation of Emily Maitlis’ infamous interview with Prince Andrew. Here’s our A Very Royal Scandal review.
Prime Video’s A Very Royal Scandal is the second dramatisation of Emily Maitlis’ interview with Prince Andrew we’ve seen in a year. We found the previous one, Netflix’s Scoop, to be a little lacklustre, but thankfully, A Very Royal Scandal is a much more entertaining affair.
A Very Royal Scandal follows A Very English Scandal and A Very British Scandal – we’re sensing a pattern here – as a fictional look at events in British history. A Very Royal Scandal presents a much more modern case, one that most of us remember very well. That comes with its own difficulties, but for the most part, A Very Royal Scandal excels at what it sets out to do.

Andrew’s laughter during a 2010 interview helped Sheen in ‘A Very Royal Scandal’
Speaking to People, Sheen revealed the moment that helped inform his portrayal of the Duke of York, 64, on screen. It came from watching a 2010 Sky News interview in which Andrew discussed his years in the Royal Navy in relation to the Prince of Wales and Duke of Sussex’s own military service.
“In the research, when I’m looking at all the footage and interviews, I’m waiting for something to kind...

It was the interview that had everyone talking. In 2019, on the BBC program Newsnight, Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, sat down with journalist Emily Maitlis in Buckingham Palace to address his relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and allegations of his own misconduct. (The subject was also covered by Netflix in the April film Scoop.) Now, the three-parter A Very Royal Scandal (premiering September 19 on Prime Video) starring Good Omens’ Michael Sheen and Luther’s Ruth Wilson dramatizes how the hourlong chat came together. (Watch the video above to see Sheen and Wilson talk about filming the interview.) “Because I’ve played a lot of real-life characters, people assume I want to [do that], but it’s the script, it’s the story” that drew him in, Sheen tells TV Insider. He, like everyone, watched the interview when it aired and was “shocked, amazed, and disturbed.” So when it came...

Emily Maitlis has now watched both Gillian Anderson and Ruth Wilson portray her onscreen in the space of just six months.
The former BBC Newsnight presenter is renowned in British journalism but to many around the globe, she might be more recognizable as the woman who sat down with a seemingly nervous Prince Andrew in 2019 to probe the royal family member on his relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Prime Video’s A Very Royal Scandal, airing exclusively on Amazon on Sept. 19, follows the infamous interview, how it came to fruition, and the aftermath. The three-episode series — which, unlike Netflix, boasts Maitlis as executive producer — more closely follows the two characters at the heart of the story: a reporter intent on unearthing the truth in Maitlis and the late Queen’s second son, who finds himself desperate to broadcast his version of events and unwittingly further derails the public’s relationship with the monarchy.

Exclusive: Neil Gaiman is understood to have offered to step back from the third and final season of Prime Video’s fantasy drama Good Omens.
Deadline revealed on Monday that pre-production had paused on the BBC Studios-produced show in the wake of allegations made by four women against Gaiman, which he denies. This came after Disney’s planned feature adaptation of Gaiman’s 2008 YA title The Graveyard Book also was put on pause.
Now, we understand that Gaiman has made an offer to Amazon and producers to take a back seat on the latest season so that it can continue amid crisis talks over the Terry Pratchett adaptation’s future. Deadline understands Gaiman’s offer is not an admission of wrongdoing following a podcast from Tortoise Media that chronicled accounts of two women, with whom he was in consensual relationships, who accused him of sexual assault. Another two have since come forward.

Last week, it was revealed that Disney had paused its live-action adaptation of Neil Gaiman's The Graveyard Book following the revelation that multiple women had accused the author of sexual assault. And now, in the same vein, Amazon Prime Video has hit the pause button on the third and final season of Good Omens.
The British author, 63, has faced several allegations of “non-consensual sex” and “sexual assault” in the last few months. In a July report from Tortoise Media, Gaiman was accused of sexually assaulting a then-20-year-old woman, who he'd met at the age of 18 at one of his book signings in 2003, and later a 23-year-old woman named Scarlett in 2022. In late July, another woman came forward on the Am I Broken: Survivor Stories podcast who claimed Gaiman had sexually assaulted her in 2012. Then at the beginning of August, two more women came forward on Tortoise Media's podcast.

“Good Omens” has halted production on its third and final season, according to media reports.
The pause on the Prime Video fantasy series, which had been filming in Scotland, comes amid sexual assault allegations against author Neil Gaiman, which he has vehemently denied.
As filming takes a beat, “Good Omens” might undergo some production changes, per Deadline, who first reported the news. Representatives for Prime Video declined TheWrap’s request for comment.
Last week, Disney similarly put an adaptation of Gaiman’s “The Graveyard Book” — which had Marc Forster attached to direct — on pause amid news of the allegations, according to a report from IndieWire. In August, Netflix announced that it didn’t opt to renew “Dead Boy Detectives,” which is based off of Gaiman’s comics, for a second season.

Prime Video has halted production on the final season of “Good Omens.” The decision comes two months after series creator and showrunner Neil Gaiman was accused of sexual assault by several women.
The series, which stars Michael Sheen and David Tennant as an angel-and-demon duo, was preparing to shoot in Scotland before the streamer elected to pause the production to consider changes. Amazon declined to comment.

Production on the third and final season of Good Omens has been underway in Scotland, but Deadline reports that it’s been put on pause. Uh oh. The reason for the pause isn’t clear, but Deadline has heard that there are “discussions about possible production changes.” It’s speculated that this pause is related to the sexual assault allegations made against Good Omens co-creator Neil Gaiman by several women earlier this summer.
The allegations were made in a podcast series released by Tortoise Media titled Master: The Allegations Against Neil Gaiman. Some of the allegations go back decades, with the woman accusing Gaiman of “rough, degrading” sex that was not always consensual. Gaiman has denied the allegations, saying he was “disturbed” by them. Disney also paused a feature film adaptation of Gaiman’s The Graveyard Book earlier this week.

The hit fantasy series “Good Omens” is facing an unclear path forward. Filming for the show’s third and final season had been underway in Scotland but has now stopped. According to inside sources, the production team is discussing potential changes related to the paused production. However, a spokesperson for the series would not give specifics on the discussions or reasons for halting filming.
The pause comes during a difficult time for Neil Gaiman, who created the TV adaptation and serves as executive producer, head writer, and showrunner. Just last week, Disney scrapped plans for a movie based on one of Gaiman’s books after sexual assault claims surfaced against him.
In a podcast earlier this summer, Tortoise Media aired accounts from four women alleging misconduct by Gaiman. He has denied the accusations, expressing surprise at their details. Despite renewing “Good Omens” in December, questions now arise about how Gaiman...

Midnight Sun, a Twilight novel by Stephanie Meyer, is heading to the small screen at Netflix – in animated series form.
There was a time in the early 2010s when Twilight was just about the biggest film franchise around.
It comprises five films – 2008’s Twilight, directed by Catherine Hardwicke, 2009’s New Moon, directed by Chris Weitz, 2010’s Eclipse, directed by David Slade, and the two part finale Breaking Dawn, directed by Bill Condon and released in 2011 and 2012. Their success was such that two parody films were also released in quick succession, the much maligned Vampire’s Suck and Breaking Wind.
The films followed Kristen Stewart’s Bella Swan as she becomes romantically involved with vampire Edward Cullen, played by Robert Pattinson, and werewolf Jacob Black, played by Taylor Lautner. Which all leads to a battle with vampire coven The Volturi.

There are very few interviews over the last 20 years that caused as much of a scandal as the one between a BBC journalist and Prince Andrew several years ago. The interview was meant—for the Prince’s team—to be a way to clear his name from any wrongdoing with Jeffrey Epstein. But what ended up happening was the exact opposite, leading to the new series, “A Very Royal Scandal.”

The latest Prince Andrew project has dropped trailer.
A Very Royal Scandal, which launches in a fortnight, stars Michael Sheen as the disgraced Prince with Ruth Wilson playing the role of his interviewer Emily Maitlis.
A Very Royal Scandal is a three-part TV series as opposed to Scoop, the Netflix feature that starred Rufus Sewell and Gillian Anderson in the lead roles. It is the third in the A Very… series that Amazon has previously co-produced with the BBC, although this one will only air on Prime Video. Unlike Scoop, Maitlis is involved with this one as an EP.
In the trailer, Wilson’s Maitlis can be seen pursuing the story that would make her a global household name and destroy the Prince’s reputation in a pivotal moment in British history, which saw him buckle under questions around his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein and make a sea of humiliating utterances.

Dennis Quaid said that he can relate to the late Ronald Reagan, whom he plays in a new feature biopic, because, “he was really kind of a fading actor towards the end of his career.”
