Shades of Blue began Season 3 last night, bringing with it a mention of Detective Saperstein — but who was he? Fans will remember him from Season 1 as the member of Wozniak’s crew who was killed after being pegged as the mole. David Saperstein was part of nine episodes in Season 1 of Shades of Blue, and was played by Santino Fontana. While he is no longer a part of the show, his character was mentioned several times over when Season 3 opened last night with a brief recap of the first two seasons. Detective Saperstein was mentioned because […]

Death is inevitable. That’s a universal truth we all learn at a very early age and as we get older, the reality of that truism becomes more and more evident with each passing day. But what if you didn’t have to die? What if you could live forever? That wish fulfillment was precisely what a then up-and-coming filmmaker Ron Howard explored back in 1985 with his wondrous fable, Cocoon. It’s a remarkable film for many reasons, but what has always made it so memorable for me was the way Howard managed to create such a vivid, dignifying and endearing portrait of octogenarian life that demonstrated how the elderly can still enjoy a fulfilling existence even if the rest of the world no longer recognizes their vitality.
This month, Howard’s wondrously heartfelt fable turns 30 and it feels like the perfect time celebrate this remarkably unique film that defied the odds for many reasons,...

Ron Howard was a beloved child actor who showed some directing chops with Splash, a fantasy-themed comedy but he truly showed that he was a director to be taken seriously with his follow-up, 1985’s Cocoon . The movie was light-hearted, but a drama, which immediately showed his range. Additionally, Howard worked with a collection of veteran actors and he coaxed terrific performances from them all, resulting in Don Ameche’s Supporting Actor Oscar.
The movie is referenced now and then but has largely slipped from the collective consciousness, which is a shame, because it’s a nice story, well told, and worth seeing again. 20th Century Home Entertainment has released a 25th anniversary edition on Blu-ray and interestingly, rather then now-common combo pack, this a single Blu-ray disc retailing for the reasonable $24.95.

When Karen Armstrong, an author and former Catholic nun, won the 2008 Ted Prize, she made a Ted wish worthy of Mother Theresa: that a Charter of Compassion be drawn up with help from leading thinkers in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. A year and a half after Armstrong made her wish, the charter is a reality.
Armstrong's charter was written with input from thousands of people in more than 100 countries. In February, the Council of Conscience (a group including Tariq Ramadan, Rabbi David Saperstein, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and Sheikh Ali Gomaa) put all the ideas together into a cohesive charter.
The text of Armstrong's document is available at the Charter for Compassion website, but promotion for the charter doesn't stop there. Yves Behar and his team at fuseproject designed more than 60 Charter for Compassion plaques to be placed at significant religious and secular locations around the world, and nearly 200 special religious...

Nick Cannon is quick to put the brake on the false rumors claiming his wife Mariah Carey is pregnant. Commenting on the persistent false pregnancy reports which repeatedly hit him and the pop diva, Cannon tells Mario Lopez of "Extra", "I think what it is, the public really wants us to have kids. We're going to do it and when we do it we're going to let you all know. But right now, we're trying to enjoy the newlywed aspect."
"We were walking out of the office where Will Smith's office is," Nick says of the circulating claims that he and Carey were spotted leaving a clinic. "Unless Will Smith is delivering babies on the low...," the actor jokes.

Pop diva Mariah Carey adds fuel to the long persistent rumors of her carrying a baby in the oven as she reportedly has purchased a $200,000 worth of furniture from a children's store in San Francisco, including a pink crib and a highchair. Regarding the chosen color, it sparks further speculation that she and husband Nick Cannon are expecting a baby girl.
The baby gear, according to The New York Daily News' Gatecrasher, are planned to be set up in the $125 million David Saperstein's mansion in Holmby Hills, which Mariah reportedly is planning to buy. "It's 45,000 square feet and looks like a European castle," a source tells the news media. "It's so big, it can't even be called a mansion - it's similar to Buckingham Palace!"
"She has asked [interior decorator] Kenneth Bordewick to advise on her new home and has requested an all-pink nursery. It's going to be over the top!

What becomes a diva most? Apparently, in Mariah Carey's case, a $125 million mansion. Luxist reports that the porpoise-voiced warbler has made an offer on palatial Beverly Hills property Fleur de Lys, built by Texas billionaire David Saperstein. Though the amount of Carey's bid has not been disclosed, the asking price for the five-acre property is $125 million. But that buys a lot of perks. If Carey—who according to reports is planning to move to the Los Angeles area with her husband Nick Cannon—buys the property, she'll become the proud owner of a 15-bedroom, 41,000-square-foot French limestone mansion inspired by the Vaux.
