Simultaneously enigmatic and visceral, the new Spanish horror film The Elderly instantly sets a dreadful atmosphere and continues to build it to a crescendo of pure terror. It's a slow-burn until it isn't, with one of the grisliest final acts in recent memory. The film begins when an elderly woman dresses herself up in order to jump out a window and take her own life. Her husband, Manuel, is left alone but doesn't seem particularly fazed. In fact, his indifference to death and suffering becomes increasingly disturbing as the audience asks themselves, is he insane, suffering from dementia, or something somehow more... inhuman?
Manuel's loving but struggling son, Mario (an endlessly relatable Gustavo Salmerón) takes him in, much to the chagrin of his pregnant new wife, Lena. Mario's first wife died some time ago, and their daughter, Naia (Paula Gallego in one of the year's best performances), harbors resentments and insecurities as a result.

Fernando González Gómez and Raúl Cerezo’s “The Elderly” (2022) is a Spanish-language horror film that deals predominantly with the psychological breakdown of elderly people who suffer from loneliness and deprivation. It explores the life of an elderly man named Manuel, who has recently lost his wife and suffers from acute loneliness and grief. Two of the season’s most reliable groups when it comes to forecasting the eventual Academy Awards nominees for Documentary Feature have now announced the shortlists for their own programs. The International Documentary Association (Ida) and Doc NYC, one of the largest documentary film festivals in the country, both boast great track records with either nominating, awarding and/or screening major contenders for the Oscars in recent years.

Panama City — Mexican documentary filmmaker Everardo Gonzalez is attending Iff Panama for screenings of his multiple award-winning doc “Devil’s Freedom” and as tutor at the fest’s Documentary Workshop, working in conjunction with Campus Latino’s Bettina Walter, Toronto’s documentary programmer, Thom Powers.

Panama City — On Thursday night, Panama City’s Teatro Balboa hosted the opening ceremony for the 7th Panama Intl. Film Festival, screening this year’s foreign-language Oscar winner, Sebastián Lelio’s “A Fantastic Woman.”
The screening took place in the presence of the film’s lead actress, Daniela Vega.
This year’s edition has a record number of films and participating countries – 75 films from 51 countries, including two world premieres. Since the fest’s launch in 2012, it has welcomed over 4,300 films and over 700 international guests.

Following an initial round of premieres and the announcement that Borg vs. McEnroe will open Toronto International Film Festival 2017, they’ve now announced their lineup for Midnight Madness and Documentaries. Leading the pack of our most-anticipated among midnight tiles is Brawl in Cell Block 99, which is S. Craig Zahler’s follow-up to Bone Tomahawk and will premiere at Venice beforehand. There’s also the latest film from Joseph Kahn, Bodied, which will open the sidebar, and the first trailer has landed.

They are two of the Toronto International Film Festival’s wildest sections — for very different reasons — and this year’s slate of both Midnight Madness and Documentary offerings appear to signal another strong lineup for the festival. Thrills, chills, terror, and scares await movie-goers, all care of unbelievable real-life stories and slightly less true tales for genre fans of all stripes.

Perhaps after this third installment this franchise can enter the same void for the format which it’s named, as this is by far the least thematically inventive anthology of the trio. A quintet of five up and coming horror directors spackle this latest omnibus, once loosely geared to tickle our nostalgic fancy for the retired home video format from an era where gritty and scary films used to be more prolific.
Interweaving between its three sordid tales is the wraparound segment, “Vicious Circles,” from director Marcel Sarmiento, better known as the helmer of “D is for Dog” from the first The ABCs of Death film and his feature, Deadgirl. Magnet Releasing has released a bloody insane red-band trailer for V/H/S: Viral, which is the third film in the V/H/S horror anthology series. This has been such a fun horror franchise that I've enjoyed watching every year when Halloween rolls around. This trailer is definitely Nsfw, there's some pretty jacked up shit in it, but it looks like an awesome addition to the horror franchise!

Say what you want about the first V/H/S film, I happen to enjoy it. However, I will defend V/H/S/2 to the death. What a great anthology that was. Dark, creepy, gory and inventive, V/H/S/2 does what any good sequel would. Take what made the first film effective, and make it even more so. I personally haven’t watched this red band trailer for the new sequel, V/H/S: Viral, because I don’t want a single second of this film spoiled for me. If you’re braver than I, though, here it is, for your viewing pleasure. V/H/S: Viral will be available on VOD on the 23rd of October. A limited theatrical engagement will follow, beginning on November 21st.

You know what happens when characters head to "isolated cabins" in horror, right? Yes, bad things ocurr. This is part of the premise for the upcoming thriller The Path aka La Senda. This title is currently in post-production in Spain and the film involves a couple who are set upon by an intruder. However, this interloper is not completely unknown to Ana, Raul's wife. More details on this feature are below.
The synopsis for The Path:
"Raul, in a desperate attempt to salvage his marriage with Ana, suggests spending Christmas in a remote cabin in the mountains, together with their seven-year-old son, Nico. When Ana and Nico make friends with one of the locals, Samuel, Raúl becomes insanely jealous. Cast: Betiana Blum, Carmen Maura, Verónica Forqué, Marisa Paredes, Mercedes Sampietro, Gustavo Salmerón, Unax Ugalde, Hugo Silva, Daniel Hendler, Paco León, Raúl Jiménez, Tito Valverde, Lluís Homar Reinas / Queens is Manuel Gómez Pereira's dramatic comedy about five mothers (Verónica Forqué, Carmen Maura, Betiana Blum, Mercedes Sampietro, and Marisa Paredes) who must cope with their gay sons' (and their own) romantic problems as they all get ready for Spain's first mass gay wedding ceremony. The film, made by Warner Bros. Spain, has the look and feel of a glossy Hollywood flick — or of a non-English-language film begging for an American remake. But cheesy commercialism and sentimentality aside, Reinas boasts a couple of first-rate performances — Forqué as a nymphomaniac, Blum as a sweet-as-overripe-apple-pie Mom — and delivers more than a few good laughs. Additionally, the climactic big-wedding finale is quite touching.

Variety reports that Spanish sales agency Film Factory Ent. has picked up international distribution rights to Miguel Angel Toledo's psychological thriller The Path (La Senda), co-penned by writer-director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later, Intruders, The Crow remake).
Toledo's directorial film debut, The Path turns on a couple, whose marriage is on the rocks, who decide to spend Christmas night with their 7-year-old son in an isolated, snow-bound cabin in the mountains.
Co-written by Toledo and Fresnadillo, script has "a tense and claustrophobic atmosphere," said Film Factory founder Vicente Canales.
Gustavo Salmeron and Irene Visedo star. The Path will have its world premiere for the October's Sitges film festival.

The pic's cast include Spanish thesps Gustavo Salmeron (Body Confusion) and Irene Visedo (The Devil's Backbone). Now in post, pic shot for six weeks in Spain's Teruel province and Alicante's Ciudad de la Luz Studios. Budget was Euro2.5 million ($3.6 million).

The film is presently making headlines because a sales outfit called Film Factory snatched up the international distribution rights. What's notable about it is that Juan Carlos Fresnadillo co-penned this thriller. Fresnadillo is making waves with his upcoming Clive Owen-starring flick Intruders .
