One of our remits here at Nerdly is to champion no-budget and low-budget movies, uncovering hidden gems that might not have that “big budget” polish but make up for it with creativity, commitment, and bold storytelling. Crimes of the Devil fits that bill to a tee – it’s an intriguing entry in the psychological thriller genre, offering a mix of theological horror, crime drama, and moral ambiguity. While it does have its flaws, it’s an ambitious effort that deserves some attention.
Crimes of the Devil follows a woman, Eve, who commits a shocking act of violence and then, under interrogation, begins unravelling the mysterious and eerie circumstances that led her to that point. There’s an almost stage-play quality to the film,...

James Marsden wants to play Frank Sinatra in a biopic.
“I’ve always loved emulating some of the old crooners, like Bobby Darin and Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin,” Marsden told the New York Post this week. “I always thought there were so many interesting stories of Frank Sinatra’s life that could be played. And for whatever reason, you’ve never really seen a movie about him.”
To be fair, Ray Liotta played Sinatra in 1998’s made-for-television movie The Rat Pack, James Russo played him in Stealing Sinatra, also made for TV (released in 2003, the movie covers the 1963 kidnapping of the singer’s famous son), Dennis Hopper played him in 2003’s The Night We Call It a Day, about Sinatra’s 1963 Australia tour, and Robert Knepper played him in 2012’s My Way, about the life of French singer Claude François.

Get a first look at Armie Hammer dealing out vigilante justice in the Uwe Boll movie The Dark Knight

The concept for this upcoming film almost sounds like a throwaway punchline in a comedy — “Controversial acting figure Armie Hammer will attempt to make a comeback…but it will be in an Uwe Boll movie. This movie will be about a vigilante who deals his own brand of justice and it’s titled…The Dark Knight.” However, not only is this movie happening, it’s already well into production in Zagreb, Croatia. Boll stated, “The story of The Dark Knight couldn’t be a more current topic, and I’m excited to bring it to life with this excellent cast.”
You can now get a new look at The Dark Knight as Variety has shared a couple of new images from the production. Additionally, the cast has added Costas Mandylor, who is a regular actor in the Saw franchise. The Dark Knight is based on an original script by Boll,...

Filmmaker Uwe Boll is back with a new action-packed vigilante thriller, ‘The Dark Knight,’ starring Armie Hammer as a man who takes justice into his own hands. The film, currently shooting in Zagreb, Croatia, has also added Costas Mandylor (‘Saw’ franchise) to the cast. Along with this announcement, the production team has released a first-look image from the film, giving fans a glimpse of what’s to come.
In ‘The Dark Knight,’ Hammer plays Sanders, a man who goes rogue and begins hunting down criminals himself. Mandylor takes on the role of Interpol officer Henry, the man tasked with stopping him. This sets up an intense game of cat and mouse, with two strong-willed characters on opposite sides of the law.
Boll is excited about the casting, saying

Armie Hammer’s comeback is picking up steam after nabbing the starring role in Uwe Boll’s latest film, “The Dark Knight.”
Hammer is set to play the crime-fighting titular character in the vigilante thriller, which is scheduled to begin principal photography in Croatia on Jan. 27.
The embattled actor, who saw his career come to a halt in 2021 following allegations of sexual misconduct, recently returned to work in Travis Mills’ forthcoming western “Frontier Crucible,” which also stars Thomas Jane and William H. Macy.
Following a lengthy probe, Los Angeles prosecutors in 2023 declined to charge the actor with any crime.
Prior to the allegations, Hammer starred in such high-profile pics as Gore Verbinski’s “The Lone Ranger” alongside Johnny Depp, Guy Ritchie’s “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” with Henry Cavill and Luca Guadagnino’s “Call Me by Your Name” with Timothée Chalamet.

It’s not uncommon to see the same actor playing several different roles at the same time, especially on TV shows.
Shawn Hatosy has a role on Rescue: Hi-Surf but is also a recurring face on Chicago Pd. Both roles portray Hatosy as an entitled white male in charge who’s not afraid to bend the rules to get his way.
It’s not the first time Hatosy has taken on roles that depict him negatively. He’s one of those actors who is great at playing a jerky bad guy. However, he also has numerous memorable characteristics as an okay guy.
(Lori Allen/NBC)
Hatosy fans from the ’90s might remember him from his early days when he took on awkward teen roles to expand his filmography.
He had several small supporting roles, racking up time with big names like Brittany Murphy (Double Jeopardy) and James Russo (No Way Home...

Gangster movies have long been one of the most successful and beloved corners of cinema, from classics like Get Carter to modern hits like The Irishman. From real criminals like Al Capone to fictionalized characters like the thieves in Reservoir Dogs, the genre covers a range of topics, from personal drama to detective work. At every step, audiences are shown the inner workings of crime families and how they operate, but are often led to identify with a gangster.
Gangster movies typically serve as something of a morality play, exploring the effects of a life of crime on people, from criminals themselves to innocent people and police officers. By the time these stories end, audiences are left to either root for or against key figures, and some films end with justice. A good gangster movie doesn't have to end on a happy note, and they're often at their best when...

It can be hard to tell sometimes what is a Best Horror Movie You Never Saw. You look at the credentials on a particular film without looking at the title and surely it has to be a mega popular hit. You have Italian mega director Dario Argento, Oscar nominated Piper Laurie, James Russo, Brad Douriff, and special effects by another master of his craft in none other than Tom Savini. I set you up with all those names and accomplishments and maybe you wrack your brain on the possibility that you have seen or even heard of the movie. But I say have you seen the 1993 horror movie Trauma (watch it Here) and I’m guessing for most people, the answer will be no. That is a sure fire way for a movie to end up on this show and that’s why today you will learn why Trauma is...

Quick Links The Postman Plot and Cast The Postman Was a Flop at the Box Office Is The Postman Worth a Watch?
It has undoubtedly been a rough go for Kevin Costner in 2024. His most recent project, Horizon: An American Saga, struggled at the box office before making its way to streaming with mixed reviews from viewers and critics. Some may even say the discourse around the film has been rather harsh for Costner, whose career as an actor and director has seen equal successes as horrible failures.
Still, out of all the movies that Costner has directed, one stands out as his biggest flop, and we are not talking about Waterworld, which he starred in. 1997's The Postman was such a financial and critical failure that it had an irreplicable effect on Costner's career that few other actors have experienced. Kevin Costner‘s period Western Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1 has a streaming date.
The first chapter in the former Yellowstone star’s film saga will release on Max on Aug. 23.
Following the film disappointing at the box office — Chapter 1, which runs three hours and one minute, opened to just $11 million over the June 28-30 weekend — Costner’s Territory Pictures and distribution partner New Line Cinema decided to pause on releasing Horizon: Chapter 2. The second installment was pulled from a planned Aug. 16 theater release in order to give audiences the opportunity to discover the first installment on PVOD and Max.
Chapter 1 debuted in the home on Premium VOD July 16 while it remained in theaters, but at that time, a Max date had not been announced. The switch-up in what was an ambitious release plan was in hopes of allowing more time to grow the audience, as the first film sports a $100 million price tag.

Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1, the first installment of an ambitious Civil War epic from Kevin Costner, has been set to begin streaming exclusively on Max on Friday, August 23.
The film hits streaming following its Cannes premiere and June 28 theatrical debut, which was regarded as a misfire for a big-budget title, at a gross of just over $34 million. While Warner Bros initially intended to release Chapter 2 just two months later, on August 16 — in an unusual move — the sequel’s release has since been delayed for an indefinite period, the hope being to give audiences who have not yet caught up with Chapter 1 a chance to do so. Chapter 2 will screen out of competition at the Venice Film Festival on Saturday, September 7, with Chapter 1 playing there earlier in the day.

Acclaimed director and auteur Spike Lee opens up about casting Madonna in an unexpected '90s comedy.
Speaking to Vulture, Lee discussed the Queen of Pop's casting in his 1996 black comedy Girl 6 in the role of a phone-sex hotline manager. Rather than the role itself being an issue, the controversy surrounding Madonna's casting revolved around the fact that two of her previous films, Body of Evidence and Dangerous Game, both bombed at the box office in spite of her star presence. Of the decision, Lee explained that he, quite simply, "didn't give a fuck." Lee added, "She's who I had in mind, and she wanted to do it, so that was it. She's a pro."

Sylvester Stallone's vision for Beverly Hills Cop differed significantly from the final product, with a more action-focused script and altered character dynamics. Eddie Murphy's casting as Axel Foley revitalized his Hollywood career, leading to a successful franchise and numerous other iconic roles. Beverly Hills Cop's success helped establish Murphy as a leading man and comedy powerhouse, while Stallone found success in other action films.
Back in the '80s, few action stars were dominating the silver screen quite like Sylvester Stallone, who, after starring in the groundbreaking sports franchise Rocky and as John Rambo in First Blood, was looking for his next big hit. Similarly, Saturday Night Live breakout performer Eddie Murphy was riding high on the success of his work on the sketch comedy series and was establishing himself as one of Hollywood's most charismatic comedians, having appeared in the popular flicks 48 Hrs. and Trading Places.

Stepping into a project that was built for another actor has gone wrong dozens of times in the past. However, Jerry Bruckheimer, Don Simpson, and Martin Brest hit a home run with Beverly Hills Cop. Originally developed as a project for names like Sylvester Stallone and Mickey Rourke, the casting of Eddie Murphy launched the comedic talent into the stratosphere. It was far from a sure thing, but Murphy proved too magnetic to ignore. It’s why Netflix pushed hard to acquire Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, and a huge reason for Murphy’s rise into the mainstream.

While Beverly Hills Cop was not Murphy’s first leading role, it paved the way for him as an A-lister.

If you're of a certain age, there's nothing you can do: you have to accept that Crazy Frog will live in a hollowed-out space in your brain until the day you die. That blue-grey Swedish CG nuisance that was everywhere, especially ringtones, born of terrible energies, was ubiquitous sometime back in 2005. The aural plague was thanks entirely to an earworm track that worked far better in its original state in 1984's Beverly Hills Cop. "Axel F" by Harold Faltermeyer plays intermittently throughout the film and is the stuff of instant cranial embedding. Even in its original context, the song gets annoying by the third or fourth spin, but everyone involved in Beverly Hills Cop's production must've known what sort of bottled lightning they were working with.
None of this is to say that "Axel F" is the sort of song that could drum up an audience through catchiness alone,...

For Eddie Murphy, returning to his iconic Beverly Hills Cop role four decades after the original 1984 movie wasn’t as easy physically.
The actor, 63, opened up about reprising his character, Detroit detective Axel Foley, in the upcoming Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, during an appearance on the Today show Tuesday.
“It felt like old man,” Murphy quipped to Al Roker. “I did Beverly Hills Cop when I was 21, and I’m 63 now.”
He continued, “Now, I would rather not do any stunts. We were shooting something and the director said, ‘I want you to come out of this place and run down those steps.’ After we shot and he’s like, ‘Can you come down with more urgency? Faster?’ And I was like, ‘No!'”

The first part of Horizon: An American Saga premieres next month and Warner Bros. has just released the new official second trailer for the film. The Yellowstone actor has returned to the director’s seat for the first time in over twenty years for these films. Costner began work on this story in 1988 and he has more movies planned. We’re big champions of physical media here at JoBlo, and despite ongoing claims that it will soon be going the way of the Dodo, we’ve yet to see its demise. Kevin Costner is also a big fan of physical media, and when asked by Deadline about the supposed “death of the DVD,” he was quick to jump to its defence.
“Death of the what? DVD is not dead, at all,” Kevin Costner said. “That’s what they’d have you believe. Maybe it’s not making the same amount of money, but just try to go ask for that from the studio. They won’t give that up. A lot of people that like my movies, they can’t get to a theater, and they’re waiting for that moment. You can’t make your film for the opening weekend. You have to make it for its life.

Hold onto your horses, folks! Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga is riding into CinemaCon 2024 to share the latest about the Yellowstone and Dances With Wolves star’s Western epic. On Monday, we learned the first part of Horizon: An American Saga, which will debut at the Cannes Film Festival on May 19. Still, attendees moseying into CinemaCon got a new look at the sprawling drama of how settlers won the West.
During the Warner Bros. panel, Costner addressed the CinemaCon crowd, saying the movie is a bit about the promise of America. The idea was that if you were mean enough, tough enough, you could take what you wanted, but in the process, you stepped on people who had been here for 1000 years. But the film does not pass judgment, and that story, to him, was drama.

For some audiences, nothing beats a good Western featuring beautiful landscapes, epic cowboy shootouts, and profound narratives. Western films have been around for over a century, dating back to the early 1900s, with one of the first Western features, The Great Train Robbery, released in 1903. Over the years, hundreds of these films have been made, some of which have become iconic while others have been commercial failures.
Even in modern cinema, Western films continue to provide a thrilling experience. While there are a few Westerns on major streaming platforms such as Netflix and Prime Video, Tubi, a free ad-supported streaming service, offers them in abundance. This is partly due to the streamer's consistent addition of new Westerns every month. With that in mind, here is every Western film coming to Tubi in March 2024.

This is partly due to the streamer's consistent addition of new Westerns every month. With that in mind, here is every Western film coming to Tubi in March 2024.

Kevin Costner’s hugely ambitious western saga arrives this summer: here’s the new trailer, but no UK release yet.
Regular readers of this site may be already aware just how much I’m looking forward to the most ambitious Kevin Costner project in years. It’s Horizon: An American Saga, a series of four films that Costner is part-funding. Just as with his last directorial effort, the brilliant 2003 western Open Range, he’s independently funded the movie, and brought in distributors afterwards.
In the US, it’s New Line Cinema – and thus Warner Bros – that’s going to be releasing the first two films, both of which are coming out this summer. The first lands in June, the second lands in August, and both are getting US cinema releases.
As far as I’ve been able to ascertain, and heck I’ve been looking, there’s been no deal...

Kevin Costner on Monday shared on socials a first trailer for Horizon, the two-part Western epic that played a role in his growing frustrations with his Yellowstone experience.
Before the WGA strike began last May, Yellowstone co-creator Taylor Sheridan had completed scripts for the back half of the show’s fifth season that did not include Costner, whose alleged demands had been widely reported. Per the industry-insider newsletter Puck, Costner’s reps later expressed his desire to return for Season 5B and possibly more.

Part one of “Horizon: An American Saga,” the multi-film Western epic that Kevin Costner left “Yellowstone” to make, will hit theaters on June 28, with part two to follow on August 16. Warner Bros. released a trailer for the two-part film on Monday.
The trailer promises a sprawling, colorful, violent Western film about Manifest Destiny. It’s about the settling of the titular town during the years of the Civil War, as the American frontier pushes westward and settlers come into conflict with the people indigenous to the land. “There’s no army on this Earth that are going to stop those wagons coming,” a Union Army officer played by Costner’s “Yellowstone” co-star Danny Huston warns in something like the trailer’s thesis statement.
Costner wrote the script for “Horizon” with Jon Baird, produces with Howard Kaplan and Mark Gillard, directs, and stars. It’s his first time directing a film since 2003’s “Open Range,...
