HBO has given an official series order to J.J. Abrams’ new sci-fi series Westworld. The show is based on Michael Crichton’s 1973 film, and it was adapted for the small screen by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy.

The series has an incredible cast that includes Anthony Hopkins, Ed Harris, Evan Rachel Wood, James Marsden, Thandie Newton, Miranda Otto, and Jeffrey Wright.

The story is set at an amusement park called Westworld, and it’s described as “a dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the future of sin.”

The Hollywood Reporter today brings word that the Lord of the Rings star will join Sir Anthony Hopkins, James Marsden, Evan Rachel Wood, Jeffrey Wright, Rodrigo Santoro, Ed Harris, Shannon Woodward, Ingrid Bolso Berdal, Angela Sarafyan, Eddie Rouse, Kyle Bornheimer, and Simon Quarterman for the new TV series, inspired by the 1973 film.

The cast of HBO and Bad Robot.s .Westworld. continues to grow this week as The Hollywood Reporter now brings word that "Rogue" and "ER" star Thandie Newton has signed on to appear opposite Sir Anthony Hopkins, James Marsden, Evan Rachel Wood, Jeffrey Wright, Rodrigo Santoro, Shannon Woodward, Ingrid Bolso Berdal, Angela Sarafyan, Eddie Rouse, Kyle Bornheimer, Simon Quarterman and Ed Harris.

The movie is being produced by J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot, and is being written by Jonathan Nolan.

The androids at the adult amusement park Westworld began to think for themselves one day, with murderous results. In the late Michael Crichton’s 1973 directorial debut Westworld, the beginning of independent artificial intelligence means the end for some humans. Inspired by Crichton’s film and also titled Westworld, HBO’s upcoming pilot just added Ed Harris to its A-list cast.

As director David Gordon Green returns to the mind frame of independent cinema with a duo of films like Prince Avalanche and (especially) the soon to be theatrically released Joe, Criterion revamps his 2000 feature debut, George Washington at a time that seems ripe for reexamination both in Gordon’s own eclectic filmography and the American independent film scene at large. Today’s film is the 2014 short Rat Pack Rat. The film stars Margie Beegle, Steve Little, and Eddie Rouse, and is written and directed by Todd Rohal. Rohal has made a number of short films and three features, including Nature Calls with Johnny Knoxville and Patton Oswalt. Rat Pack Rat made its debut at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival in the Short Films category.

Chicago – Long-delayed stateside, premiering On Demand, stupidly retitled (it was and still should be just “Alyce”), Jay Lee’s twisted trip down the rabbit hole of sanity, “Alyce Kills,” was not high on my list of anticipated films. Much to my surprise, “Alyce Kills” is a riveting slice of weird, a tale that reminds me of great films like “Repulsion” and “May” more than most of the junk that falls through the genre cracks and ends up in a similar launch pattern. It’s ten times better than most horror movies that will hit the multiplex this year. Genre fans will eat it up.

The Collective and director Jay Lee (Zombie Strippers) will release the psychological thriller Alyce Kills this May. The film is a surrealistic journey through murder, guilt and the loss of a friend. The story focuses on Alyce (Jade Dornfield). She leads a fun lifestyle of late night parties and drug use. This lifestyle leads to the death of her friend, through an accidental fall. The guilt of her death haunts Alyce, until she slowly begins to unravel. Now, Alyce is caught between the reality of events and everything else. On the Road movie reedited for Toronto screening Based on Jack Kerouac's '50s novel, Walter Salles' Otr adaptation starring Garrett Hedlund, Sam Riley, and Kristen Stewart (above photo) will be screened at the upcoming Toronto Film Festival. We all knew that. What we didn't know is that Tiff 2012 will unveil a new cut of the film (via indieWIRE), which premiered last spring at the Cannes Film Festival to mixed reviews. The 2hr20m drama has been downsized to approximately 125 minutes. That's an interesting development, as Otr has already been screened in several countries, with varying degrees of box-office success. But Director Paul Weitz has revived the old legend with a meaty, purposeful character, and De Niro delivers it with his old fire. ‘Being Flynn’ is not a comeback, but a gratefully received reboot.

This exceptional character study has De Niro playing a homeless man, accepting the fate with as much rancor and cardboard philosophy as he can muster. What is so impressive about the role is that it’s wrapped in a logical, sensitive story about the relationship between a father and son, at a point where all the signs and past encounters should add up to no relationship at all. Chicago – Part of the fun in watching movies is experiencing the career evolution of a particular director. One such career is Paul Weitz, who began with the memorable “American Pie,” went a bit more serious with “About a Boy” and “In Good Company,” and cements his credibility in the insightful “Being Flynn.”

In 1999 Paul and his brother Chris Weitz made their directorial debut with the sex comedy classic “American Pie,” and both have helped each other as collaborators throughout their separate careers ever since. Paul’s director credits have been a progression, becoming increasing more substantial (his pick-up in 2010 of “Little Fockers” notwithstanding). “Being Flynn” connects the director to issues regarding homelessness and the writer’s life, and he guides both subjects with a natural intuition, a respect for his characters and an unexpected depth.

Alyce and her best friend Carroll go out for a night of fun when Carroll finds out that her boyfriend is cheating on her. Devastated, the girls begin drinking heavily when Carroll decides she needs something stronger to help ease her pain so they go to a drug dealer that Carroll frequents to score some ecstasy. Once back at Alyce's building, the girls head up to the roof, where Alyce (trying to scare Carroll) ends up pushing off.

Riddled with guilt, and plagued by haunting visions of Carroll, Alyce goes back to the dealer to get something to help her cope. As her life comes crashing down around her, Alyce goes deeper into the dark world of drugs, sex and eventually murder as she loses her grip on reality.

At first I thought that this film was going to be a typical ghost story,...

Here’s the first poster for Jonah Hill’s new movie, The Sitter which goes down the same sort of line as the red band version of the trailer showing what will happen if you ask him to look after your kids!
