Plot: A motivational speaker is tormented by an unrelenting itch on the back of her head.
Review: Body horror is all the rage right now and thankfully, with so many films being released every year, some are able to capitalize on the trend. I’ve been of several of the Hulu Horror ventures like The Mill and Mr. Crocket, so I’m excited to see another release from them. And the fact that it’s body horror is all the more intriguing. Because there are always plenty of different avenues to take a film that relies on making your skin crawl. Control Freak combines the metaphorical with a real life monster to give us a very unique experience.

With Control Freak now streaming on Hulu, we were recently able to catch up with director Shal Ngo (The Park; Bite Size Halloween) and stars Kelly Marie Tran (Raya and the Last Dragon; Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi) and Miles Robbins (Blockers; Halloween) to talk about their brand new body horror film that's guaranteed to send a chill down your spine.
In the film, Kelly Marie Tran plays a motivational speaker who is tormented by an unrelenting itch on the back of her head, which ultimately leads to the most devastating of showdowns with something not of this world.
Talking with the trio, they tell me more about where the idea for the film originated, how Tran was able to tackle one of the most challenging roles of her career, how both Ngo and Robbins were able to help her get in the right headspace, and a whole lot more.

An ambitious motivational speaker is tormented by an unrelenting itch in the back of her head in Hulu’s new horror film, Control Freak, but that itch seems destined to never be satisfied. And it’s a 50/50 split whether horror fans will be, either, in this Kelly Marie Tran-led outing written and directed by Shal Ngo (based on his Hulu short film Control). Tran, known for her work in Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Raya and the Last Dragon, is perfectly cast, however. Tran creates a believable protagonist as a fast-rising motivational speaker named Valerie, who spirals down a psychological rabbit hole that leads to bloody terror.

Control Freak is streaming on Hulu on March 13.
In the last few years, horror has become the cultural zeitgeist in the world of cinema. Horror is relatively easy to produce and gathers much higher returns on investment than prestige drama used to. As the relative popularity of horror increases, specific subgenres are receiving far more attention than ever. Between The Substance making history through its Best Picture Oscar nomination and Dave Franco and Alison Brie’s raucous Sundance flick Together being the biggest sale of the 2025 festival, it’s clear that this freaky subgenre is part of the moment, at least for a while. Hulu is looking to enter this scene through Control Freak, an unsettling horror flick that’s a mess from start to finish.

“That voice was a parasite inside my mind – and I was way too generous a host.”
This line sets the tone for Control Freak,Hulu's latest bone-chilling psychological horror. Written and directed by Shal Ngo and starring Kelly Marie Tran (of Star Wars and Raya And the Last Dragon fame), Miles Robbins, Kieu Chinh, Callie Johnson and Toan Le, Control Freak is an intensely heady, emotionally charged and unnervingly relevant meditation on the destructive trail of mental illness. Based on Ngo's 2021 short film of the same name, featured in Hulu's Bite Size Halloween, the full-length feature goes all-in on its literal depiction of mental illness, inherited trauma and Buddhist folklore, but its longer length and unsteady pacing works against it.
Valerie Nguyen (Kelly Marie Tran) is a successful motivational speaker. In public, she is capable, confident, and, above all, in control. Behind the scenes, Val's desperate need for control isn't so well-received.

Starring Kelly Marie Tran in a captivating lead role, this movie transforms a simple nuisance—an itchy scalp—into an unsettling body horror experience that will make you hyper-aware of every little tingle on your skin.
Kelly Marie Tran takes on the role of Val, a motivational speaker known for her Ted Talks, where she inspires thousands to take charge of their lives. On stage, she exudes confidence, but behind the scenes, Val struggles with internal battles she cannot seem to win. Having burst onto the scene as resistance fighter Rose Tico in Star Wars sequels The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, and then followed that straight up with a starring role in 2021's Raya And The Last Dragon, Kelly Marie Tran has been scratching her acting itch in a variety of indie and lower key projects over the last few years. In her next movie, Shai Ngo's Hulu bound horror joint Control Freak, Tran will be scratching a far more literal itch — or at least trying to — as Val, a motivational speaker who finds her bonce being plagued by a demonic parasite. Sound crazy? Well, just check out the trailer below — it looks crazy, too:

If you were itching to see Kelly Marie Tran in a horror film, you're in luck, but its premise — on the surface — may confuse you. You see, the Star Wars star is slated to go head-to-head with... an itch. On the back of her head. Only it's not just a pesky patch of dry skin, it's a full-on parasitic demon that has made its way into her body, and it's causing her to do a whole host of uncharacteristic things. Did we mention she is also a motivational speaker? Yeah, Control Freaksounds like it's going to be very stressful. And possibly gory. But also maybe funny?
Given that the film is coming to Hulu, we're inclined to follow our hopes on that. But you can also make your own assessment by watching the extremely anxiety-inducing new trailer for the film, released to entice you to tune in when it hits...

The latest Hulu Original horror flick, Control Freak, has gotten a poster or trailer, but be forewarned – if you suffer from arachnophobia you might not want to look at the poster I’ve included below. It’s a little gross! Control Freak, comes from director Shal Ngo, who expands his own horror short, Control, to feature length with this. The short was originally featured on Hulu’s Bite Sized Halloween. Ngo also recently directed The Park, which was like Lord of the Flies set in an amusement park, but this seems to be his biggest movie to date.
It stars Kelly Marie Tran (of Star Wars: The Last Jedi) as “a motivational speaker is tormented by an unrelenting itch on the back of her head.” The trailer actually reminds me a bit of a fun old schlocky horror movie from the seventies called The Manitou, where a woman was similarly infected by a parasite,...

Hulu has unveiled the official new trailer for Control Freak, an original horror movie starring Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi actor Kelly Marie Tran as a woman afflicted with a demonic parasite.
Control Freak debuts exclusively on Hulu on March 13.
The logline for this psychological thriller is straightforward, simple, and effective: “A motivational speaker is tormented by an unrelenting itch on the back of her head.”
Watch the new trailer below, which introduces the start of the parasitic affliction. Intriguingly, the trailer withholds any full glimpse of the entity, though the creepy, crawly new poster below might give us a better look.
In Control Freak, Tran plays “Valerie, a woman whose life spirals into chaos due to this inexplicable and relentless affliction.” Opposite Tran, Miles Robbins plays “her on-screen husband Robbie.” Toan Le rounds out the cast as Valerie’s father, Sang, with Kieu Chinh as Aunt Thuy.

Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi star Kelly Marie Tran will find herself dealing with a mysterious parasitic affliction in WorthenBrooks and Hulu Original’s Control Freak, and our exclusive first look images indicate a psychologically disturbing, bloody time ahead.
Control Freak debuts exclusively on Hulu on March 13 before heading to Disney+ internationally at a later date.
The logline for this psychological thriller is straightforward, simple, and effective: “A motivational speaker is tormented by an unrelenting itch on the back of her head.” That strange itch gives way to an intense journey as the woman finds herself battling a parasitic demon from her homeland.
Tran plays “Valerie, a woman whose life spirals into chaos due to this inexplicable and relentless affliction.” Opposite Tran, Miles Robbins plays “her on-screen husband Robbie.” Toan Le rounds out the cast as Valerie’s father, Sang, with Kieu Chinh as Aunt Thuy.

A24 delivered the “disaster comedy of the millennium” when their film Y2K (you can read our review at This Link) reached theatres on December 6th – but not a lot of movie-goers turned out to see it. The movie has only made $4 million at the domestic box office. Maybe it will be better luck when viewers have the option to watch the movie in the comfort of their own homes… and that option is arriving very soon. Next week, in fact. Y2K is set to receive a digital release on December 24th and is available for pre-order on Apple TV and Amazon.
The feature directorial debut of Saturday Night Live veteran Kyle Mooney, who also crafted the screenplay with Evan Winter, Y2K has the following official logline: On the last night of 1999, two high school juniors crash a New Years Eve party, only to find themselves fighting for their lives in this dial-up disaster comedy.

The A24 horror-comedy movie Y2K incorporates many elements of 1999 culture. Y2K takes place on New Year's Eve as 1999 comes to an end and 2000 begins. However, in this version of history, the worst fears about the "Year 2000 Problem" come to life. Despite the fictional premise, the movie is a reminder of the memorable popular culture and cinema that defined 1999. The 1990s are frequently looked back on with a great deal of nostalgia that culminated in 1999.
From the 1990s' best detective movies like Seven to the best fantasy horror movies like The Nightmare Before Christmas, the decade was filled with enduring cinematic achievements. In terms of 1999 culture, the year is partly defined by the memorable movies that were released that year. Other movies are able to capture 1999 culture by encapsulating the humor, widespread interests, common problems, and everyday items that were ubiquitous at the end of the twentieth century.

The box office has been set ablaze once again thanks to the recent hit musicals Moana 2 and Wicked, the latter having a Broadway history to the extent that many musical lovers may already know most of the songs by heart. Some have seen the staged production multiple times and are still looking forward to seeing Wicked on the big screen more than once. And many of those fans, according to reports, have been so enthralled by the magic of Oz that they can't help but whip out their phones and quite literally take photographs of the theater screen in excitement.
Another issue surrounding musical films like Wicked is those same fans refusing to stay quiet and singing aloud in theaters along with Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande as they belt out some of the most iconic songs in Broadway history. Could that type of audience participation perhaps cause the...

In Y2K, a group of teenagers ring in the year 2000 with a New Year's Eve party. However, their plans change when the night ushers in a robot apocalypse, forcing the teenagers to work together to survive the human-slaying technology surrounding them. The film, which is distributed by A24, stars breakout actors including Rachel Zegler, Julian Dennison, and The Kid Laroi, as well as Alicia Silverstone.
As fun as the film sounds, it's also alarming from an industry perspective. Y2K blends horror and comedy, which is a genre mix audiences have been seeing far too often recently. The two genres feel like they should work well together, but with each new movie, the blend becomes a little bit more boring. Y2K is indicative of a need to slow down with horror-comedies before audiences become disinterested entirely.

Warning: Spoilers for Y2K.
Exploding with just about every reference from 1999, Y2K is a horror comedy directed by SNL alum Kyle Mooney in his directorial debut, which is also co-written by him and Evan Winter. The film follows two high school losers named Eli (Jaeden Martell) and Danny (Julian Dennison), who finally decide to live a little by crashing the house party of a classmate on New Year's Eve in 1999. With plenty of Can’t Hardly Wait and Superbad vibes, the beginning of the film is rife with all the woes of teenage angst but rapidly shifts toward a bloody and imaginative version of the Y2K issue that plagued the country leading up to the year 2000.
In reality, nothing happened. However, in Mooney’s film, machines take over at the stroke of midnight and subsequently turn against humanity, either killing them or assimilating them. Now on the cusp of an apocalypse,...

If you were alive during Y2K, then you know the dreaded switch from 1999 to 2000 was a heavily talked about subject. What would happen to the computers (and us) when the clock struck midnight? Although everything turned out alright in reality, Y2K explores the what if of it all. The first half is wildly fun, especially as it puts characters in the uncomfortable position of being at a party that goes awry shortly after the countdown. But what starts off as a quirky teen comedy with hints of sci-fi catastrophe turns into a messy romp that loses its intrigue.

Artificial intelligence has been a source of contention of late, to put it mildly, even escalating tensions in Hollywood to the point of an actors' strike just last year. There's a collective sense of dread over the subject and how it will affect (or infect) multiple areas of work, but that technological anxiety is not new. 25 years ago, at the dawn of the new millennium, the so-called "Y2K" panic led to widespread paranoia and fears that technology would simply shut down or turn on us once the clocks struck midnight on January 1, 2000. In reality, nothing of the sort occurred at the time — but what if it did? Said alt-universe notion is the A-story of A24's new horror-comedy Y2K, from co-writer, director, and co-star Kyle Mooney (Saturday Night Live).
Watch as a seemingly innocent high school graduation party gets brutally terrorized by robots, electronic household appliances and more once the year 2000 officially kicks off.

Kyle Mooney is doubling down on throwing it back to 1999 for his upcoming horror comedy Y2K. Before the former SNL cast member transports movie audiences to the time of dial-up and widespread technological superstitions in his A24 film, he's transported himself to the year '99 in a new short titled "life in 99," released on his personal YouTube channel. With the last video posted more than seven years ago, Mooney revived his old YouTube channel with a five-minute comedy short to promote the release Y2K, which he also wrote and directed. If this is any indication of how funny his upcoming A24 horror comedy will be, fans are in for a treat.
As the reviews roll in for the film starring Rachel Zegler, Jaeden Martell, and Julian Dennison, the hype continues to increase for the nostalgia-bomb tale of alternate history. Mooney is marketing Y2K the best way he knows how,...

Ahh, that delightful AOL Instant Messenger sound effect of a door opening — aka one of your pals signing on to chat — still lives rent-free in some of our brains, doesn't it? And when nostalgic films and TV shows like PEN15 and the recent Didi utilize such landmark computer programs for the sake of storytelling, one doesn't even need to have fully experienced Aim and other throwback then-innovations to appreciate the retro vibes. The new film Y2K joins the nostalgia bandwagon this week, with a title that immediately evokes this, hearkening back to the eve of the millennium and its cultural paranoia. Would all the computers and technology around us shut down all at once? Or worse, attack us?

It doesn’t sound like HBO thinks Tim Robinson should leave, after all. In fact, the premium network just ordered a new series from the comedian, titled “The Chair Company.”
The half-hour comedy, which was granted a pilot order in April, follows a man named William Ronald Trosper (Robinson), who finds himself “investigating a far-reaching conspiracy” after an embarrassing incident at work.
Robinson and Zach Kanin, who created “I Think You Should Leave With Tim Robinson” together, will serve as writers and executive producers for “The Chair Company.” Adam McKay and Todd Schulman also executive produce for HyperObject Industries, with Igor Srubshchik serving as an EP and Andrew DeYoung directing and executive producing the pilot.
The supporting cast for the series includes Lake Bell as Barb Trosper, Sophia Lillis as Natalie Trosper, Will Price as Seth Trosper and Joseph Tudisco as Mike Santini. Lou Diamond Phillips also guest stars in...

Oprah Winfrey’s imprimatur has made many an author’s career. Now, she’s wielding her literary star power to help anoint a new bookstore, co-founded by former WME literary agent Jennifer Rudolph Walsh, who previously led Winfrey’s “The Life You Want” arena tour in 2014. After a decades-long career of working with some of the world’s best-selling authors including Tom Clancy and Brené Brown, Walsh launched the new endeavor, Godmothers, on a tony strip in the seaside hamlet of Summerland, California, last weekend alongside her co-founder, philanthropist and cosmetics industry pioneer, Victoria Jackson.
“It’s really been stirring to the soul,” Walsh tells The Hollywood Reporter. “Victoria and I truly made manifest exactly what we dreamed of. Godmothers is a cathedral to us. It’s a home.”

HBO has reportedly given the green light to an untitled comedy series written by Rachel Sennott. Seeing Sennotts comedic talents, the premium cable channel ordered the pilot to film back in March, and it featured her as both creator and star. Directed by Lorene Scafaria, the series also boasts a talented cast including Odessa Azion, Miles Robbins, Jordan Firstman, and True Whitaker.
Sennott and Scafaria also executive produce alongside Emma Barrie and Aida Rodgers. As per Variety, Amy Gravitt, executive vice president of HBO and Max comedy programming, is more than thrilled about moving forward with the project and has expressed her excitement by stating:
Rachel is as hilarious as she is charming. With Lorene and Emma, she has captured the comedy and the beauty that happens when friendships collide with our best laid plans. Were thrilled to be continuing our collaboration with this talented team and this exquisite cast.
