I’ve been of several of the Hulu Horror ventures like The Mill and Mr. Crocket, so I’m excited to see another release from them. And the fact that it’s body horror is all the more intriguing. Because there are always plenty of different avenues to take a film that relies on making your skin crawl. Control Freak combines the metaphorical with a real life monster to give us a very unique experience.

With Control Freak now streaming on Hulu, we were recently able to catch up with director Shal Ngo (The Park; Bite Size Halloween) and stars Kelly Marie Tran (Raya and the Last Dragon; Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi) and Miles Robbins (Blockers; Halloween) to talk about their brand new body horror film that's guaranteed to send a chill down your spine.

In the film, Kelly Marie Tran plays a motivational speaker who is tormented by an unrelenting itch on the back of her head, which ultimately leads to the most devastating of showdowns with something not of this world.

Talking with the trio, they tell me more about where the idea for the film originated, how Tran was able to tackle one of the most challenging roles of her career, how both Ngo and Robbins were able to help her get in the right headspace, and a whole lot more.

An ambitious motivational speaker is tormented by an unrelenting itch in the back of her head in Hulu’s new horror film, Control Freak, but that itch seems destined to never be satisfied. And it’s a 50/50 split whether horror fans will be, either, in this Kelly Marie Tran-led outing written and directed by Shal Ngo (based on his Hulu short film Control). Tran, known for her work in Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Raya and the Last Dragon, is perfectly cast, however. Tran creates a believable protagonist as a fast-rising motivational speaker named Valerie, who spirals down a psychological rabbit hole that leads to bloody terror.

In the last few years, horror has become the cultural zeitgeist in the world of cinema. Horror is relatively easy to produce and gathers much higher returns on investment than prestige drama used to. As the relative popularity of horror increases, specific subgenres are receiving far more attention than ever. This line sets the tone for Control Freak,Hulu's latest bone-chilling psychological horror. Written and directed by Shal Ngo and starring Kelly Marie Tran (of Star Wars and Raya And the Last Dragon fame), Miles Robbins, Kieu Chinh, Callie Johnson and Toan Le, Control Freak is an intensely heady, emotionally charged and unnervingly relevant meditation on the destructive trail of mental illness. Based on Ngo's 2021 short film of the same name, featured in Hulu's Bite Size Halloween, the full-length feature goes all-in on its literal depiction of mental illness, inherited trauma and Buddhist folklore, but its longer length and unsteady pacing works against it.

March is already looking to be a good month, with a slew of horror content making its way to Hulu, including chilling new releases, classic scares, and must-watch thrillers. However, their plans change when the night ushers in a robot apocalypse, forcing the teenagers to work together to survive the human-slaying technology surrounding them. The film, which is distributed by A24, stars breakout actors including Rachel Zegler, Julian Dennison, and The Kid Laroi, as well as Alicia Silverstone.

As fun as the film sounds, it's also alarming from an industry perspective. Y2K blends horror and comedy, which is a genre mix audiences have been seeing far too often recently. The two genres feel like they should work well together, but with each new movie, the blend becomes a little bit more boring. Y2K is indicative of a need to slow down with horror-comedies before audiences become disinterested entirely.

If you were alive during Y2K, then you know the dreaded switch from 1999 to 2000 was a heavily talked about subject. What would happen to the computers (and us) when the clock struck midnight? Although everything turned out alright in reality, Y2K explores the what if of it all. The first half is wildly fun, especially as it puts characters in the uncomfortable position of being at a party that goes awry shortly after the countdown. But what starts off as a quirky teen comedy with hints of sci-fi catastrophe turns into a messy romp that loses its intrigue.

In reality, nothing of the sort occurred at the time — but what if it did? Said alt-universe notion is the A-story of A24's new horror-comedy Y2K, from co-writer, director, and co-star Kyle Mooney (Saturday Night Live).

Hold onto your butthole, there’s a new killer dino flick in town. Well Go USA has released their horror-comedy The Invisible Raptor in select theaters and on Digital outlets today.

In the film, “After a top-secret experiment goes wrong, a hyper-intelligent invisible raptor escapes the lab and begins wreaking havoc in the surrounding neighborhood. When the creature’s identity is uncovered, it soon becomes clear that a disgraced paleontologist—alongside his ex-girlfriend, an unhinged amusement park security guard, and a local celebrity chicken farmer—is the town’s only hope for surviving the raptor’s ravenous rampage.

Kyle Mooney is doubling down on throwing it back to 1999 for his upcoming horror comedy Y2K. Before the former SNL cast member transports movie audiences to the time of dial-up and widespread technological superstitions in his A24 film, he's transported himself to the year '99 in a new short titled "life in 99," released on his personal YouTube channel. With the last video posted more than seven years ago, Mooney revived his old YouTube channel with a five-minute comedy short to promote the release Y2K, which he also wrote and directed. If this is any indication of how funny his upcoming A24 horror comedy will be, fans are in for a treat.

A24 has just dropped the first trailer for Y2K, the debut film directed by Kyle Mooney. Starring Rachel Zegler, Jaeden Martell, and Julian Dennison, this New Year’s Eve comedy takes a quirky twist on the infamous Year 2000 tech scare, adding a dash of chaos and laughs.

Produced by Jonah Hill, the film brings together a unique team, including Matt Dines, Allison Goodwin, Christopher Storer, Cooper Wehde, and Evan Winter. Production comes courtesy of A24, Strong Baby Productions, and American Light & Fixture.

On December 31, 1999, two high school juniors, Eli (played by Martell) and Danny (played by Dennison), find themselves caught in an unexpected, chaotic night after crashing a New Year’s Eve party.

Alicia Silverstone has joined the cast for Yorgo Lanthimos' upcoming science fiction film, Bugonia.

Per Variety, Silverstone joins Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons in Bugonia, which is described as an alien conspiracy film. Silverstone is best known for portraying Batgirl in Joel Schumacher's Batman & Robin, as well as her breakout role as Cher in Amy Heckerling's Clueless. Silverstone has worked with Lanthimos previously on The Killing of a Sacred Deer, a thriller starring Colin Farrell and Nicole Kidman There is no official word on who exactly Silverstone will be playing in the film. Bugonia will be Lanthimos' follow-up to this year's Kinds of Kindness, which also stars Stone and Plemons.

Exclusive: Black Bear’s management arm has signed writer, director, actor, and producer Jordan Firstman, whose credits include Sundance 2023 black comedy Rotting in the Sun.

Firstman first rose to prominence by sharing short skits, impressions, and impersonations on Instagram Live during the Covid-19 pandemic.

He is also known for writing for Alia Shawkat’s Search Party and he was a consulting producer on Netflix’s animated series Big Mouth. As a filmmaker, Firstman directed the narrative short Men Don’t Whisper, which was shortlisted for the Grand Jury Prize at both Sundance and SXSW in 2018. He has also written for Comedy Central’s The Other Two and directed multiple episodes of the Peabody-nominated Sundance TV series This Close.

On the acting side, Firstman joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2022 via Ms. Marvel on Disney+. He also recently appeared in FX’s Dave and the Netflix comedy You People with Jonah Hill and Eddie Murphy.

It doesn’t sound like HBO thinks Tim Robinson should leave, after all. In fact, the premium network just ordered a new series from the comedian, titled “The Chair Company.”

The half-hour comedy, which was granted a pilot order in April, follows a man named William Ronald Trosper (Robinson), who finds himself “investigating a far-reaching conspiracy” after an embarrassing incident at work.

Robinson and Zach Kanin, who created “I Think You Should Leave With Tim Robinson” together, will serve as writers and executive producers for “The Chair Company.” Adam McKay and Todd Schulman also executive produce for HyperObject Industries, with Igor Srubshchik serving as an EP and Andrew DeYoung directing and executive producing the pilot.

Oprah Winfrey’s imprimatur has made many an author’s career. Now, she’s wielding her literary star power to help anoint a new bookstore, co-founded by former WME literary agent Jennifer Rudolph Walsh, who previously led Winfrey’s “The Life You Want” arena tour in 2014. After a decades-long career of working with some of the world’s best-selling authors including Tom Clancy and Brené Brown, Walsh launched the new endeavor, Godmothers, on a tony strip in the seaside hamlet of Summerland, California, last weekend alongside her co-founder, philanthropist and cosmetics industry pioneer, Victoria Jackson.

HBO has reportedly given the green light to an untitled comedy series written by Rachel Sennott. Seeing Sennotts comedic talents, the premium cable channel ordered the pilot to film back in March, and it featured her as both creator and star. Directed by Lorene Scafaria, the series also boasts a talented cast including Odessa Azion, Miles Robbins, Jordan Firstman, and True Whitaker.

Sennott and Scafaria also executive produce alongside Emma Barrie and Aida Rodgers. As per Variety, Amy Gravitt, executive vice president of HBO and Max comedy programming, is more than thrilled about moving forward with the project and has expressed her excitement by stating:
