Ship, the announced sequel to the Gerard Butler-starring Plane, gets a new update from star Mike Colter. Released in 2023 and directed by Jean-François Richet, Plane stars Butler as Brodie Torrance, an airline pilot and former Raf officer who teams up with Colter's Louis Gaspare to rescue his passengers after being forced to land in a war zone. The film was a critical and commercial success, and it was announced shortly after the film's release that a sequel called Ship was in the works. Few updates on the project have emerged since, however.
Now, during a panel at Indiana Comic Con hosted by Collider, Colter shares an update on the status of the Plane sequel. Unfortunately, it doesn't sound like there's been much movement on Ship just yet, with Colter blaming the delay on the dual WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes of 2023, which began only months after Ship's announcement. A sequel to one of Gerard Butler’s best action thrillers has reportedly hit a wave behind the scenes. Plane, which was released back in 2023, is getting a sequel in the form of Ship, which will see Butler’s co-star, Luke Cage’sMike Colter, return as former Gcp French Foreign Legionnaire Louis Gaspare continues to make his escape aboard a boat following the events of the first movie.
Offering an update on Ship in a conversation with Collider at Indiana Comic Con, Colter revealed that, while Ship is still on course, the project has suffered several delays. Asked about the action movie follow-up, Colter revealed that, due to the Hollywood strikes, the actor has been left waiting to get the go-ahead from Butler and his production company.
"The status on that is that it was a thing that happened during the strike. They were supposed to be following through on it [then the strike happened]. There's things going on.

Plane, the 2023 action thriller starring Gerard Butler and Mike Colter, is sky-high on the streaming charts again. At the time of writing, the movie had soared past its competition, which included the likes of The Wild Robot, Sing 2, and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2 to land the #1 spot on Peacock's Top 10 in the United States, per FlixPatrol. It seems that more and more people are getting on board with Plane as it previously took flight on Starz at the start of the year, proving that there is an audience for its sequel.

“All right...let’s play.” Action movie icon Jason Statham does what he does best in a new action-packed clip from this month’s highly anticipated action thriller, A Working Man. Directed by The Beekeeper’s David Ayer, and with a script from Statham’s Expendables co-star Sylvester Stallone, A Working Man is set to hit theaters on March 28, 2025, and promises to be another crowd-pleasing action outing much like last year’s surprise hit, The Beekeeper.
You can check out the footage below, which finds The Stath entering the lion’s den where a criminal overlord named Dutch vastly underestimates the granite-jawed killer in front of him. Making the classic mistake of telling his henchmen to “get him,” Statham tears through his assailants with ease, throwing fists, breaking bones, and no doubt resulting in cheers and applause from the audience.

A clip from Jason Statham's soon-to-debut A Working Man has arrived. It showcases one of the brutal, bone-breaking fights audiences can expect from the action movie, which hits theaters this March.
The trailer features Statham's character, Levon Cade, in a fierce brawl with a gang after refusing to confirm he is not a law enforcement agent. The popular Irish band The Dropkick Murphy's The Boys Are Back plays over the exhilarating sequence as Cade breaks a few bones and bashes a couple of heads in. Impressed by Cade, the gang leader halts the violence and shakes their assailant's battle-worn hand, which reassures him Cade is not a cop. "You're a working man," he declares.

The Beekeeper star Jason Statham continues to fly the flag for wonderfully no-nonsense action movie fare, and his next movie, the Jean-François Richet directed Mutiny, has now been given a release date. Sadly, it’s going to be a little while before we catch The Stath’s next violent vendetta.
As per a report by Deadline, Mutiny will land in theaters next year on January 9, 2026, with Lionsgate putting Statham’s latest action thriller up against Universal’s M3GAN spin-off Soulm8te, which releases the week before on January 2. Other than that, the path is clear for Mutiny to make a killing at the box office on its opening weekend.
Mutiny sees Statham in the role as both star and producer as he joins forces with the director behind 2023’s Gerard Butler-led Plane, Jean-François Richet, with the action outing finding The Mechanic star on the run while uncovering a major global conspiracy.

Another Jason Statham action thriller, Mutiny – this one from the director of Plane – has its US release set for January 2026.
Jason Statham, whose action output appears to be increasing over time, is currently shooting an untitled thriller somewhere in the UK or Ireland as these words are being typed. Meanwhile, an action thriller he shot in the autumn of 2024, Mutiny, now has a US release date – 9th January 2026.
Mutiny is the work of French director Jean-François Richet, who previously brought us the robust Gerard Butler thriller, Plane, which happens to include one of the most unfortunately-named fictional airline companies in film history.
According to Deadline, Statham will star as one Cole Reed, a private security specialist who’s framed for the murder of his billionaire boss. It sort of sounds a bit like 1993’s The Fugitive, though we suspect Statham’s Cole will break more jaws and ribs than Harrison Ford did as Richard Kimble.

Action icon and The Beekeeper star Jason Statham is transformed into a video game icon in this concept trailer for a potential Hitman adaptation. Taking footage from Statham’s previous movies, the much-maligned Hitman movies that have already been made, and using a touch of AI (shudder), the footage (via Screen Trailers) demonstrates what a movie led by The Stath as Agent 47 could look like. And no doubt fans of The Mechanic star will be hoping it becomes reality.
The Hitman video games, which follow the mysterious assassin Agent 47 as he travels the world taking out targets assigned to him by the even more mysterious International Contract Agency (Ica), has already been adapted for the big screen twice before. But neither has really satisfied fans of the game, action fans, or, well, anyone, really.

With the thrill of fast cars, bone-breaking action, and raw intensity that has become his signature, Jason Statham isn’t letting up anytime soon. From his unforgettable stints in Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels to The Transporter, he’s been lighting up the screen with a thrilling grip that grabs you by the collar and throws you off your guard.
Statham’s career took off like a turbocharged engine when he first appeared in Guy Ritchie’s Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels in 1998. The movie’s success set the stage for what would become a fruitful partnership between Statham and Ritchie, culminating in Snatch (2000).

Action star Gerard Butler continues to be hugely popular with audiences as we enter 2025. One of the actor’s best-reviewed movies, 2023’s Plane, is now taking flight on streaming, landing at #4 on Starz in the United States. Boasting a score of 79% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences were even more enamored with this tale of a stranded passenger plane, awarding the movie a hugely impressive 94% on the Popcornmeter. “Check your critical thinking at the gate: The plot's preposterous and loaded with entertaining action, making Plane plenty of good old-fashioned fun,” the audience consensus reads.
Directed by Jean-François Richet and written by Charles Cumming and J. P. Davis, Plane is led by Gerard Butler as pilot Brodie Torrance and Luke Cage star Mike Colter as the mysterious convict Louis Gaspare. Jason Statham fans rejoice! As another of the action icon’s thrillers is all set to stream for free from the end of this month. Meaning we’ll be going into the new year just as we’d always hoped - watching The Stath hit as many people as possible. Released back in 2013, the action crime outing Hummingbird, released in the United States as Redemption, is all set to land on Tubi on January 1, 2025, and finds Statham in a much more overtly dramatic role than his usual action movie fare.
Written and directed by Steven Knight, who is best known for creating the hit crime drama series Peaky Blinders, Redemption finds The Stath leading as the mysterious Joey, a former special forces soldier who returns to London after a traumatic experience. Left to find for himself, Joey now lives on the streets and drinks to both numb the pain and...

The end of the year is not something to celebrate for Jason Statham fans, as Dec. 31 may be a rather unfortunate day for fans of the action movie actor who are subscribed to Netflix.
As per Netflix, Dec. 31 will mark the last day Statham's The Mechanic and Redemption are available to stream on the platform. Both movies are considered favorites for many fans of the actor. The Mechanic, released in 2011, served as a remake of the 1972 movie starring action genre legend Charles Bronson. Statham's version earned over $76 million at the box office upon release, and despite its initial mixed reviews, the movie has come to a place where it's fondly celebrated by fans as one of the action star's underrated films. It spawned a sequel in 2016's Mechanic: Resurrection, which was a box office hit with over $125 million earned, though

Action movie icon Jason Statham knows what he’s good at, and damn if he isn’t one of the best to ever do it, with the charismatic star able to bring any middling action fare at least somewhat to life using his particular set of skills. This is never truer than with the 2013 crime thriller Parker, which adapts one of the novels by the late Donald Westlake, and is all set to stream for free.
While the movie itself was met with mixed reviews at the time, the presence of The Stath never fails to impress, with The Beekeeper star bringing his usual gritty magnetism to the role of a professional thief who finds himself double-crossed and left for dead. Directed by Taylor Hackford and written by John J. McLaughlin, Parker sees Jason Statham team-up with Jennifer Lopez while butting (bald) head with (bald) head against The Shield star Michael Chiklis.

Exclusive: It takes a certain kind of confidence to take a finished indie film to market with no presales, but if that completed film is a $24 million Spanish-language musical directed by a French auteur about a Mexican cartel leader that transitions from male to female, you’d better hope your sales agent has a backbone of steel and the experience to deliver.
Enter The Veterans co-founders Vincent Maraval and Kim Fox, who both arrived at this year’s Cannes Film Festival tasked with selling Emilia Pérez, the genre-defying musical from festival darling Jacques Audiard, which was competing for the Palme d’Or with just one key territory sale to France (Pathé) on the balance sheet.

A “Cliffhanger” follow-up keeps on rolling. But now in a much different configuration.
Rocket Science in partnership with Thank You Pictures and Supernix has announced that filming is underway on “Cliffhanger,” a reboot of the 1993 action extravaganza that starred Sylvester Stallone and John Lithgow. This new version stars Lily James and Pierce Brosnan and is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, based on a story by Ana Lily Amirpour.
A proposed follow-up to “Cliffhanger” dates back to 1994, when TriStar announced “Cliffhanger 2: The Dam,” with Stallone returning. For years it sat fallow until 2019, when Amirpour was hired and Jason Momoa was earmarked to star. In 2023 it was re-announced as a legacy sequel, with Stallone set to return under the direction of Ric Roman Waugh. Mark Bianculli wrote that version of the script. Later in 2023, Jean-François Richet was hired to replace Waugh.

Mutiny is currently filming in UK, with Jason Statham starring and the director of Plane calling the shots. More here.
Jason Statham kicked off the year in some style with The Beekeeper. It remains one of the most fun films of 2024, as The Statham managed to kick seven shades of shit out of people, all while tending to his non-metaphorical hive. Sequels would be very much appreciated.
The Statham hasn’t been sitting back and counting the coins from The Beekeeper’s surprise box office success, though. He’s already reteamed with the director of that particular film, David Ayer, for Levon’s Trade. That’s based on a screenplay from Sylvester Stallone, and in turn on the book of the same name by Chuck Dixon. It’s set for release this coming January.

The belated Cliffhanger 2 could give Sylvester Stallone a much needed boost after a stretch of bad luck with franchises. During Hollywood's so-called Golden Age, movie stars avoided sequels, with most finding them inferior attempts to cash in on a hit. During the 1970s, Stallone was one of the first actors to recognize the value of building a franchise for himself, so when his post-Rocky movies flopped, he soon returned with Rocky 2. That's not to say he didn't find value in dipping back into the Rocky movie franchise and fleshing out new chapters in the boxer's life, however.
It was when Stallone hit big with the Rambo movies that he became the king of sequels, and could typically rely on a new sequel in either series to boost his box-office numbers. Other Sylvester Stallone franchises include The Expendables and Escape Plan, and over 30 years after the original, Sly...

Cliffhanger 2, the highly anticipated follow-up to Sylvester Stallone's '90s classic, gets a filming start update. Directed by Renny Harlin, the original Cliffhanger, which was released in 1993, revolves around Stallones character Gabe Walker, a search-and-rescue mountain climber who is hired to help rescue a band of criminals from the Rocky Mountains after they accidentally lose their loot. The original movie was well-received, earning $255 million worldwide. Despite this reception, Cliffhanger 2 did not materialize until years later; the official development announcement came in 2023.
Cliffhanger 2 has yet to receive a release date, but according to ScreenDaily, the forthcoming movie is set to begin filming in the fall. This was revealed in a larger report about various projects receiving special funding via Austria's filming incentive program. Production will take place at various locations in Austria and Bavaria. French screenwriter and director Jean-Francois Richet will helm the project.

Sylvester Stallone might be getting ready to thrill audiences with Season 2 of his hit Paramount+ crime series Tulsa King, but a new report suggests the 78-year-old star is also getting ready to deliver more death-defying stunts in Cliffhanger 2, a sequel to the 1993 action-thriller that Stallone starred in alongside the likes of John Lithgow and Michael Rooker. Produced on a budget of $70 million, Cliffhanger grossed a worldwide total of $255 million, and was met with generally favorable reviews upon its debut, and was nominated for three Academy Awards, including one for Best Visual Effects.

Bring up the films of John Carpenter to any movie buff worth their weight in celluloid, and once they finish praying in the direction of Bowling Green, Kentucky, they'll start in on the essentials –- i.e. every movie in his oeuvre stretching from 1974's "Dark Star" to 1988's "They Live." From here, they'll single out 1994's "In the Mouth of Madness" as a return to peak form after the disappointing "Memoirs of an Invisible Man," and maybe share kind words about "Escape from L.A." "Vampires," "Ghosts of Mars," and, heck, even "The Ward." But that '74 -- '88 run is considered sacrosanct. You don't dispute this, and if you're fortunate enough to be a working filmmaker, you think long and hard about the wisdom of remaking one of these classics should a studio ever offer you the opportunity.
This is because Carpenter's aesthetic is inimitable. The widescreen compositions, the long takes,...

Jason Statham is someone who is admirably unpretentious and genuinely grateful for his success, and within that, he has a definite preference of films that can predominantly define his career. Earlier this year, Statham was seen in The Beekeeper, a seemingly usual action B-movie fare with the star, but the movie from Suicide Squad director David Ayer would throw in some bold conceptual curve balls to the normal vengeance tale. Deadline has now reported that Statham will be working with director Baltasar Kormákur for his next action film.

Davis wrote the screenplay for Mutiny, with principal photography beginning in September in the UK. Statham produces through his newly-founded Punch Palace Productions, with Marc Butan via his MadRiver Pictures studio.
In Mutiny, after his billionaire industrialist boss is murdered in front of him, Cole Reed is set up to take the fall for the crime— leaving him on the run as he works to uncover an international conspiracy.

Flight Risk, starring Mark Wahlberg as a villain, may replicate the success of the similar film "Plane" from 2023. The new movie, directed by Mel Gibson, follows an air marshal lured into a trap by a hitman posing as a pilot. With Wahlberg's star power and the potential for global box office success, Flight Risk could easily reach $100 million worldwide.
Mark Wahlberg's upcoming film Flight Risk could prove to be a surprise success, especially when taking into account the box office of a similar blockbuster from last year. In Flight Risk, Wahlberg is set to play against type, as instead of his usual heroic persona he is taking on the role of a psychotic hitman. The trailer for the film recently debuted at CinemaCon, and Flight Risk will likely premiere either late 2024 or early 2025.

If curating the Best Action Movies of All Time felt borderline impossible, then ranking just the top entries from this century is Mission Barely Manageable.
Most franchise IP blockbusters released to big box office hauls in recent years could qualify as “action movies” in one way or another. That’s particularly true when it comes to the omnipresent cultural phenomenon we call superhero films. It can be tempting to write off the entire action genre when all you see is the over-pixelated epics about super-somethings stopping intergalactic injustice that make up an increasingly large chunk of modern Hollywood. However, the action movies that depend less on fetishized source material have yielded some of the most personal higher-budget workaround. When done well, action movies can tell great character-driven stories through movement. Action — acted or animated — is simply drama made dynamic.
That principle is what separates so many of the movies on...
