This year, Robert Downey Jr. received his first-ever Oscar win for his supporting role as Lewis Strauss in Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer. With the remarkable performance that he gave, it was certainly well-earned, but having been nominated twice previously, it was an achievement that was long overdue. Even though he's now perhaps most well-known for his decade-spanning turn as Tony Stark/Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he's had quite a remarkable career outside that one character that has proven him to have a wider range than some may give him credit for. Celyn Jones has started filming Madfabulous in Wales, as the cast for his latest movie as director gets filled out. More here.
Earlier this year, a man best known for his acting and screenwriting – Celyn Jones – shifted into the director’s chair for the first time with the movie The Almond & The Seahorse (pictured). Actually, already, that’s not quite true. He shot that movie originally with co-director Tom Stern a couple of years back, then overhauled it in post-production. Co-starring with Rebel Wilson, the film notched up solid notices on its UK release.
Around the time of its release, Celyn Jones was talking about his next project as director, that was pretty much ready to go. That’d be Madfabulous, that he confirmed to Film Stories is now up and running in Wales.
The film is set in the 19th century, and it tells the story of the fifth Marquess of Anglesey.

Exclusive: Rupert Everett and Ruby Stokes (Bridgerton) have signed on to join Madfabulous, a 19th-century-set feature from director Celyn Jones, which has just rolled cameras in Wales.
Described as a “fantastical reimagining set in the late 19th Century,” the film is inspired by the life of the fifth Marquess of Anglesey. Per the official synopsis, the story follows the outrageous Henry Paget, a flamboyant character, so ahead of his time that he smashes through society’s protocols of elitism and gender. Known for his gregarious theatrical expressions, exuberant sense of fashion, and lavish social life, Paget spent a multi-million-pound fortune before his untimely death at age twenty-nine.

Widow Clicquot tells the empowering true story of an indomitable woman who overcame grief, war, and an oppressive patriarchy to leave a legacy that continues today. She was underestimated and misjudged on a purely sexual basis despite being thoughtful and clever. Haley Bennett gives a nuanced performance over a layered narrative that unfolds too quickly in a relatively short, 90-minute runtime. Events from the first act are seen in a different light as harrowing truths are revealed. The film engrosses despite an excessive flashback structure.

"Human beings are compelled to create..." Vertical has unveiled an official trailer for the film titled Widow Clicquot, a US project even though it's about a French woman and the art of making champagne in France. This initially premiered at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival last year, and it also played at the 2024 Sonoma Film Festival earlier this year, because of course a wine movie played there. The film tells the story behind the Veuve Clicquot champagne family and business that began in the late 18th century, focusing on Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin, known as the "Grande Dame of Champagne." Haley Bennett stars as Barbe-Nicole, who married into a winemaking family and became Madame Clicquot and took over the fledgling business when she became a widow at age 27. Under her (controversial) ownership, and her skill with wine, the company developed early champagne using a novel technique called riddling. The film focuses on her...

Men Up is a brilliant new dramatic feature that aired on the BBC over Christmas, but is still available to watch on iPlayer. It’s a stirring true story about the rise of viagra in Wales, and manages to find a brilliant tonality, whereby it’s light in parts, yet takes the matter incredibly serious, resulting in a film that studies male mental health in a unique, and important way.
To mark the release of this film, we had the pleasure in speaking to the four leading roles, and below you can find our chats with Iwan Rheon and Paul Rhys, and then with Steffan Rhodri and Phaldut Sharma. When I arrive, slightly late, at the small restaurant near Paul Rhys’s home in central London, there he is, all in black, camouflaged against the dark walls, a thick journal in front of him. “I have to write every day or my head explodes,” he explains, putting it to one side. He has 30 years’ worth of material, which surely would make a brilliant memoir. I’m picturing witty asides about great co-stars, while he excoriates himself – and the tale of how a working-class Welsh boy became a posh actor, made some eccentric career decisions when Hollywood beckoned, and is now having a well-deserved career boost...

Warning: Spoilers for Saltburn!
Paul Rhys conveys his character's emotions in Saltburn through his facial expressions, earning laughs from the audience. Rhys praises director Emerald Fennell as a generous and spontaneous mastermind, admiring her articulation and mind-blowing talent. Rhys's character, Duncan, is the only one who senses something off about Oliver from the beginning, and his presence is crucial to the essence of Saltburn.
Saltburn is writer-director Emerald Fennell's sophomore feature, following in the acerbic footsteps of Promising Young Woman. Unlike her 2020 debut, however, the new movie follows the fears and follies of a young man named Oliver Quick (Barry Keoghan). As a scholarship student in the elitist circles of Oxford, he finds himself nearly friendless until the day he lets the aristocratic Felix Catton (Jacob Elordi) borrow his bike after a flat tire incident.

In America, we still like to pretend we don’t operate within an Old World-style class system. (Should you continue to labor under that delusion in the year of our lord 2023, we suggest you try taking a commercial airline flight some time.) Anyone can rise above their station, one bootstrap-tug at a time! England, however, has never tried to hide the fact that there was, is, and always has been a separation of haves and have-nots governed by toxic traditionalism, strict social strata, and fetishized notions of aristocracy.

En garde. A connoisseur of the onscreen battle, Ridley Scott stepped away from production on his anticipated Gladiator 2 to usher in the latest depiction of a power-hungry, pitifully-in-love Napoleon Bonaparte on Thursday night.
Napoleon, following the meteoric rise and fall of the 19th century French emperor — produced by Apple and theatrically distributed by Sony — premiered in London’s Leicester Square with frontman Joaquin Phoenix leading the troops on a rain-soaked red, white and blue carpet.

Savannah, Georgia is an appropriate setting for a conversation with filmmaker Emerald Fennell about her newest film “Saltburn,” which follows an Oxford student who becomes enmeshed with a wealthy classmate’s eccentric family during a summer at their country estate. “It’s fully Gothic, especially at Halloween, so it’s really my favorite kind of place,” said the director to IndieWire during a recent interview. Though, in an interview setting that featured walls that alternated between hard, slate gray panels, and thin, beaming bars of fluorescent lighting, Fennell joked that the whole thing felt a bit like “a ‘John Wick’ interrogation.”
In town to accept the Spotlight Director Award at the Scad Savannah Film Festival, Fennell denied feeling a daunting amount of pressure around what to follow up her Academy Award-winning debut “Promising Young Woman” with. “I usually have a few things going on, but I don’t write them down.

Ridley Scott’s Napoleon opens in 1793 as a revolutionary rage courses throughout France. The camera tracks a ragged yet prideful Marie Antoinette (Catherine Walker) making her way toward her executioners as commoners hurl insults and tomatoes at her. This sequence kicks off the film with a propulsive energy that instantly keys us to the rowdy spirit of the times. Unfortunately, as soon as the guillotine drops, Napoleon shifts into traditional historical biopic mode, dutifully touching on major events like the Reign of Terror and the royalist insurrection, but only in the most compulsory, disinterested manner.
This Wikipedia rundown of sorts may just be a way to get Napoleon Bonaparte (Joaquin Phoenix) front and center a little earlier, but it’s a recurring problem in Scott’s film. There are numerous laugh-out-loud moments in Saltburn, Emerald Fennell’s darkly comic and voyeuristic exploration of the British aristocracy being released on Friday by Amazon MGM Studios. Despite the hugely impressive efforts of Rosamund Pike and Richard E. Grant, however, most don’t belong to the lead cast, but to Paul Rhys.
As Duncan, the imperious and terrifying butler, the Welsh actor silently steals scenes from under the toffee noses of both those he dutifully serves at the Saltburn mansion (including Pike, Grant, Jacob Elordi and Alison Oliver) and the lower-class interloper he’s keeping a beady eye on (Barry Keoghan) each time he appears with hilariously po-faced magnificence.
And it’s a face that crops up again in another starry title landing late in the awards season corridor. In Ridley Scott’s much-anticipated biopic Napoleon, out Nov. 22 via Apple Original Films and Sony Pictures, Rhys plays Talleyrand, the crafty...

"Who's country are we in? Mine." Sony + Apple have revealed the second official trailer for Napoleon, the next epic Ridley Scott movie about the iconic French emperor. It's still set to open in November, and this is the second actual trailer since the first trailer in July (along with a few featurettes). I'm glad they're not delaying this - we need a big movie to bring us all to theaters again this fall. An Apple Studios production in conjunction with Scott Free Productions, Napoleon is an original & personal look at Napoleon Bonaparte's origins. Along with his swift, ruthless climb to emperor, viewed through the prism of his addictive and volatile relationship with his wife and one true love, Josephine. As she says: "You want to be great. Ridley Scott praises Joaquin Phoenix's performance in Joker, but expresses dislike for the film's celebration of violence. Phoenix's portrayal of the evil Commodus in Gladiator marked a turning point in his career, leading to his Oscar-winning role in Joker. Scott and Phoenix are teaming up again for Napoleon, a biopic that delves into the rise to power of the historic figure, with Vanessa Kirby co-starring as Empress Josephine.
Ridley Scott has already shown his admiration for Joaquin Phoenix, who stars in his next film and was the great villain of Gladiator, one of the filmmaker's greatest classics. The director even liked the actor's performance in Joker, although he does not feel the same admiration for the film itself.

Ridley Scott's upcoming film, Napoleon, is described as a large-scale event and demands meticulous coordination with his team, much like a battle. The film features stunning military costumes and a military expert to create realistic battle sequences, highlighting the attention to detail in Scott's approach. Napoleon explores the life of the titular character, focusing on his conquests on the battlefield and his intense relationship with his wife, Josephine.
The next film from acclaimed and multi-award-winning director Ridley Scott, Napoleon, demanded a lot from the filmmaker and his team in order to get it made. In fact, Scott has now described the plan for the shooting to being "like a battle." The British director is no stranger to the world of wars and epic battles. Whether in science fiction films like Blade Runner, or historical dramas like Gladiator or The Last Duel, Scott has delivered bloody and violent confrontations on the big screen.

Exclusive: Emerald Fennell likened making Saltburn, her dangerously dark comedy of class and lack of manners, “to taking your clothes off and exposing yourself.”
The filmmaker, who won an Oscar and BAFTAs for her debut feature Promising Young Woman, clarified that the “transgressive” material that she’s interested in working on means “that you have to spend a lot of your time as a director saying, ‘Trust me, I think this how we’re going to do it.’ And so then people watch it, which is so thrilling. But yeah, you are showing yourself. You are taking your clothes off and exposing yourself.”
She added that Saltburn, while made on a big canvas, is a ”very intimate“ movie.
She told me during a long conversation at the Telluride Film Festival, where the film had its world premiere, that this is a film “about needing and wanting and desire and sex.

The apparently ageless Ridley Scott is back with another historical epic. On Monday, Apple and Sony debuted the first trailer for Scott’s “Napoleon,” the 85-year-old filmmaker’s latest widescreen blockbuster.
The film reunites Scott with his “Gladiator” star Joaquin Phoenix for the first time since that Oscar-winning hit. “Joaquin is about as far from conventional as you can get. Not deliberately, but out of intuition,” Scott previously told Empire about his star. “That’s what makes him tick. If something bothers him, he’ll let you know.”
In that same interview, Scott said Phoenix basically rewrote the script to better align it with his take on the character. “We unpicked the film to help him focus on who Bonaparte was. I had to respect that, because what was being said was incredibly constructive. It made it all grow bigger and better,” Scott said.
