In the 23 years since the Best Animated Feature category was introduced at the Oscars, Pixar has dominated, racking up an impressive 11 wins from 18 nominations; its last victory was in 2021 for “Soul.” Walt Disney Studios has four trophies to show for its lucky 13 nominations while DreamWorks has gone 2 for 14, including the first-ever Oscar awarded for Best Animated Feature, which went to “Shrek.” Studio Ghibli also has a pair of prizes, and is the reigning champ with “The Boy and the Heron.” (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Animated Feature.)
That marked the second win for Japanese auteur Hayao Miyazaki, who had prevailed for “Spirited Away” 22 years earlier. Miyazaki crafted the only two hand-drawn movies to win this race. Two stop-motion flicks — “Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit” and “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” — have prevailed. The other 19 winners were all done with CGI.

Because of its current dominance in the world of kiddie entertainment, it may take a moment's reflection to recall that Chris Renaud's and Pierre Coffin's 2010 animated film "Despicable Me" once felt the slightest bit subversive. The main character of "Despicable Me" was the Eastern European supervillain Gru (Steve Carell) who aimed to commit visible acts of spiteful villainy. His latest plan was to steal the moon out of the sky, merely for the infamy it would garner him.
"Despicable Me" takes place in a world that's overrun by villains, thieves, and superpowered monster people, but is seemingly absent of heroes. It won't be until later sequels that a crime-fighting Mi-6-type organization would come into play. Later still, Gru would renounce his villainy and become a dippy suburban dad to a trio of precocious girls. In "Despicable Me 4," Gru also has a wife and an infant son.

Even if you've never seen the Despicable Me movies, you know who the Minions are. They're yellow, they wear denim, they speak a silly gibberish language, they get into madcap slapstick hijinks. They were originally introduced as the henchmen for the villain Gru in the first Despicable Me movie in 2010, but have indisputably become the stars of the franchise; their first solo movie, 2015's Minions, made over a billion dollars at the box office. They're in commercials, on cereal boxes and in your home watching you right now. They are legion.
I'd never thought of the prospect of live-action Minions before, but director Chris Renaud — who's helmed three out of the four Despicable Me movies, including the new one that came out earlier this summer — was asked about that prospect during a chat with Film Hounds. “Despicable Me 4” is an animation movie directed by Patrick Delage and Chris Renaud. With the voices of Steve Carell, Will Ferrell, Joey King and Sofia Vergara.
“Despicable Me 4” carries the essence of its predecessors: minimal script, maximum fun. And it’s not just us who are smitten; the Illumination Entertainment team has once again struck gold with their formula. They craft family movies that captivate the young audience while simultaneously charming parents with catchy tunes, nostalgic jokes, and plenty of nods to the past. This timeless humor, reminiscent of silent film characters, is universally appealing and brilliantly untranslatable—much like the minions themselves.
This film deliberately sidesteps a complex script, instead relying entirely on being consistently funny. Within the first five minutes, viewers are enveloped in its absurdity, relaxing and allowing themselves to be enchanted by these delightful characters. On a technical front, the film shines brightly with its spectacularly colorful animations,...

'Despicable Me' Director Talks Possible Live-Action Movies, Reveals if We'll Ever See 'Real' Minions
A director behind the Despicable Me franchise opened up about creating live-action adaptations of the animated movies.
Chris Renaud directed the first two movies in the series and returned for the recently released Despicable Me 4.
In a new interview, Chris was asked if there were any conversations about following in the footsteps of Disney and turning the franchise into live-action movies. Doing so would entail creating “real” Minions.
Is that a possibility?
Keep reading to find out more…
“God, I hope not. That’s my answer,” Chris told Film Hounds.
He continued, saying, “I mean if there were conversations like that, I haven’t been privy to them. But for me, what defines the world is that it is animated and it allows us to get away with what we get away with. Like locking a minion in the vending machine, or you know, blowing up Gru when he attacks Vector.

If the idea of a live-action Minions movie makes you shudder, you’re not the only one.
Chris Renaud, who directed the first two and fourth films in the Despicable Me franchise, shot down the potential of a live-action treatment of the mischievous banana-loving helpers.
“God, I hope not,” Renaud said bluntly when asked by Film Hounds if there was a possibility of Illumination and Universal exploring live-action movies within the franchise. “That’s my answer.”
Studios like Disney have found box-office success in remaking animated classics, such as 2019’s The Lion King and Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast (2017) and Alice in Wonderland (2010), all of which have crossed the $1 billion box office threshold. Upcoming films like Mufasa: The Lion King and a live-action Moana hope to recreate that profitability.

Chris Renaud, director of the hit animated franchise “Despicable Me,” does not want to see the films adapted into live-action. In a recent interview, Renaud firmly rejected the idea of a live-action version. He believes animation is key to the films’ spirit.
Renaud helmed the first two “Despicable Me” movies and most recently directed “Despicable Me 4.” He stated that the animated style allows fantastical elements like “locking a minion in a vending machine” or “blowing up Gru.” These cartoon scenes would be difficult to recreate in a live-action film.
The director isn’t alone in his reservations. Pixar’s creative officer Pete Docter shared similar views in a separate interview. Docter said live-action remakes of animated works “bother” him because they lack originality.

Despicable Me director Chris Renaud has zero plans for a live-action Minions movie, and he hopes to keep it that way.
The filmmaker was recently asked in an interview with Film Hounds magazine if he was ever interested in seeing the Minions make the jump from animation to live-action, given Disney’s success with it.

Who could forget the throwback moment when Taylor Swift and Zac Efron playfully dissed Ellen DeGeneres on the latter’s show? With the same gusto as their dynamic performances on screen, Swift and Efron harmoniously strummed their guitars on The Ellen DeGeneres Show; the duo was there to promote their animated film The Lorax.
Taylor Swift in Anti-Hero | Vevo/YouTube
So, it was 2012, a time when the multi-talented Swift had already bedazzled the world, flourishing in both sensational tunes and compelling acting roles—like voicing Audrey in The Lorax. Efron, no stranger to the limelight with his High School Musical pedigree, complemented Swift’s radiance as they shared the spotlight in the 2012 Chris Renaud animated flick.
During their visit to the show, they performed an original song about DeGeneres’ interviews being “weird”. Well, this performance was subtle yet spicy commentary that had the host “sitting there sweating”, as one fan remarked.

In the fourth installment of the Despicable Me franchise, Gru (Steve Carrell) is officially a dad thanks to Gru Jr., who’s intent on tormenting him. However, peaceful family bliss soon comes grinding to a halt when criminal mastermind Maxime Le Mal (Will Ferrell) — and yet another archnemesis — escapes from prison and vows revenge against Gru.
It’s potentially the challenge of a lifetime to write a compelling, nay in any way descriptive, review of Despicable Me 4. If you are reading this and haven’t yet seen the movie, or even a single second of its latest trailer, you already know exactly what you’re about to read. The film is already one we’ve seen before, countless times over. This time, it’s that little bit worse. The light has faded,...

Three things will remain to walk the earth for eternity when the apocalypse comes: Cockroaches, Keith Richards, and the Minions. Universal loves making money with Illumination‘s pill-shaped mischief makers, and after the success of Despicable Me 4, a third movie in the Minions franchise threatens parents’ wallets worldwide. Universal Pictures will release Illumination’s Minions 3 on Wednesday, June 30, 2027. Consider this your warning.

It’s not just Maxime Le Mal, the “Despicable Me 4” villain with the broad accent, that has a distinctly French flavor.
In fact, Universal and Illumination’s animated franchise boasts Gallic DNA throughout all of the hit movies. And even though Chris Renaud, the Oscar-nominated director of the latest “Despicable Me” and two of its predecessors, owes his French-sounding name to his Canadian origins, the helmer says “essentially everybody” working on the films is French. The only exceptions to this geographic over-representation are the writers (Mike White and Ken Daurio) and some of the storyboarder artists who are U.S.-based.
“Everything from what we call the layout, up through the animation, lighting and compositing — almost the entire team is French! The picture that you see is all compiled and created here in France,” says Renaud, who moved to Paris in 2010 to work on the first “Despicable Me” production...

Illumination and Universal’s Minions franchise isn’t getting any worse for the wear as Despicable Me 4 rules the Fourth of July box office with an estimated five-day opening of $120 million, including a three-day weekend haul of $72.4 million.
That’s in line with expectations and a strong start for the fourth outing in the main franchise, and the sixth in the Despicable Me/Minions series, which ranks as the top-grossing animated franchise of all time.
The first Despicable Me opened over the July 9-11 weekend in 2010 to $56 million. The series then shifted its release earlier and became a Fourth of July staple. 2013’s Despicable Me 2 likewise opened on July 3, a Wednesday, and posted a five-day debut of $143 million. That was followed by a $120 million five-day holiday start for the threequel in 2017.

No, this is not a joke, nor did I lose a bet — I did this of my own free will.

Chris Renaud wanted Will Ferrell to voice the villain on 'Despicable Me 4' because he is a "wonderful character creator".The director - who has returned to helm the new film in the franchise, having previously had the reins on the 2010 original movie and its 2013 sequel - had "always wanted" to work with the 'Blades of Glory' star and admitted the team enjoy casting people with a 'Saturday Night Live' background because they are so quick at coming up with ideas for their alter egos.Asked why Will was cast as Maxime Le Mal, Chris told The Hollywood Reporter: "For me, personally, I’ve always wanted to work with him. I am a huge fan of his work and his character work. "It’s not a mistake that we look at 'Saturday Night Live' people all the time — Chloe Fineman has...

Gru (Steve Carell) in Despicable Me 4, directed by Chris Renaud. Copyright: Illumination & Universal Pictures Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, Miranda Cosgrove, and a talented cast of voice actors breathe life into the latest installment of Despicable Me, delivering exactly what fans anticipate: a blend of mischievous Minion antics, vibrant visuals, and heartwarming family scenes. While the Minions’ playful escapades take center stage, the rest of the film lacks the resonance and comedic peaks seen in its predecessors. Gru must navigate family life with his daughters and the recently added Gru Jr., while battling a forgettable new adversary in an obviously formulaic scenario. The humor lacks the ingenuity of earlier movies, relying primarily on physical gags and pop culture allusions. Still, the endearing family dynamics create a few moving moments elevated by excellent animation. Despicable Me 4 is an okay family movie that features the slapstick humor that has made the Minions famous.

Gru and his mischievous minions are hoping to fulfill their patriotic duty and once again set off major fireworks at the Fourth of July box office.
Illumination and Universal’s Despicable Me 4, which opened Wednesday in theaters across the U.S., posted an opening day gross of $27 million for an estimated five-day holiday debut of $120 million at the domestic box office, including $70 million for more for the three-day weekend, according to early returns. Gru and his gang of minions are setting off box office fireworks this Independence Day.
“Despicable Me 4,” the latest entry in Universal and Illumination’s wildly successful animated franchise, opened to $27 million on Wednesday. The sequel brings back Steve Carell as Gru, a recovering supervillain turned secret agent, and pits him against Will Ferrell as a French baddie named Maxime Le Mal. Yet it’s the minions, those anarchic, highlighter-yellow critters, who are the biggest attractions, having starred in not just the “Despicable Me” films, but also a series of spinoffs. Look for “Despicable Me 4” to earn roughly $120 million over the five-day holiday weekend.
That strong showing is welcome news for movie theaters, which have endured a bruising start to the summer after promising films like “The Fall Guy” and “Furiosa” bombed. Things have been turning around, however, with Disney and Pixar’s “Inside Out 2,” Sony’s...

The yellow Minionese-speaking Minions are back and Maxime Le Mal is the newest villain to cause mayhem in Illumination’s “Despicable Me 4,” directed by Chris Renaud and Patrick Delage. Will Ferrell voices the French supervillain who escapes from prison, which leads Gru (Steve Carell) and his family Lucy, Margo, Edith, Agnes and a new addition, Gru Jr., to go on the run.
“[Chris and I] have been trying to work together for a long time. [“Despicable Me 4″] was an opportunity where I was pitched the character of being the villain, this French bad guy, Maxime, and that’s all I needed to hear was ‘French’ and ‘bad guy,'” Ferrell told Variety at the film’s New York premiere in June.
“I’m being typecast now,” Ferrell jokingly said about playing Maxime following his role as the Mattel CEO villain in last year’s “Barbie.” “It’s always fun to be mean, in a silly way.

It has been seven years since the last “Despicable Me” movie was in theaters, and fourteen years since the first film was released. Now, Gru and his minions return in Despicable Me 4 to further the adventures of the bad guy turned good guy through the influence of his makeshift family.
Gru’s latest adventure picks up with Gru still working alongside the Anti-Villain League when an old nemesis – Maxime Le Mal (Will Ferrell) – escapes from prison in order to take revenge on Gru for repeatedly thwarting his nefarious plans. The focal point of Maxime’s newest scheme is to kidnap Gru’s son – Gru Jr. – and turning the boy’s allegiance away from Gru. The threat that Maxime presents force Gru and his family into the equivalent of the “villain” witness protection program where his daughters are subject to navigating a new school and all of those particular pratfalls.

As we approach the big extended (four days) holiday weekend the big Summer movie season dashes past its halfway point with a new entry in a fourteen-year-old film franchise. No big surprise, but this one is hoping to “ride the wave” generated by a sequel that caused an unexpected near-seismic tsunami at the box office, only a few weeks ago. Oh, did I mention that both flicks are animated? Yes, Inside Out 2 exceeded all the financial forecasters to be the first billion-dollar movie of 2024. So, will “lightning strike” again, as this is the first installment of the series in seven years, not counting a couple of prequel spin-offs. Perhaps Gru and his gang, including lotsa’ manic Minions, can lure some families at the multiplex away from another visit in Riley’s noggin with Despicable Me 4.

The summer movie season is about to get a significant boost with the release of “Despicable Me 4,” starring Steve Carell as the lovable reformed villain Gru. Industry forecasts suggest the animated sequel could rake in an impressive $200 million worldwide over the Fourth of July weekend.
Directed by Chris Renaud and Patrick Delage, the latest installment in the popular franchise is tracking to debut between $110 million and $120 million domestically over the five-day holiday weekend (July 3-7). This performance would make it the second-best opening of the summer, trailing only behind Disney/Pixar’s “Inside Out 2,” which opened to $154.2 million in mid-June.
The film has already shown strong performance in international markets, earning $25.5 million since its July 1 release in countries like Hong Kong, Portugal, and New Zealand. Australia leads the pack with $9.7 million, followed by Argentina with $5.4 million and Chile with $2.4 million.

While Despicable Me 4 may not have the same verve as the first, the franchise has morphed into something more since the 2010 original. The immensely successful animated series has spawned sequels, prequels, television series, holiday specials, shorts, and even video game adaptations. Now, the fourth film arrives just in time for this American holiday season.
The main character has not only found his soul but has wholly transformed Gru into a family man with an immense, warm heart. That alone makes Despicable Me 4 the animated family film of the summer. Then, along with its unique sense of humor and beloved minions, it continues to steal the show, for better or worse.

Financially speaking, the “Despicable Me” franchise is in fine form. Over the course of five feature films (with number six arriving this week), the Illumination Animation property has become (deep breath): the highest-grossing animated film franchise, the 15th highest-grossing film franchise of all time and, one of the highest-grossing media franchises of all time. These movies are bankable! And while we expect “Despicable Me 4” — the first new feature in the series in two years, but at this point, there’s far too many of them. Overstuffed with characters, storylines, and kid-friendly gags, Chris Renaud’s latest film makes a strong — if accidental — case that it’s high time we turn “Despicable Me” and “Minions” into, gasp, a TV series. “Despicable Me 4” already feels like six episodes of just such a show, crammed into a single unwieldy, disconnected, and oddly episodic outing.

It’s hard not to approach reviewing Despicable Me 4 with anything other than a sense of futility. Illumination Studios seems to have cracked the code for mainstream blockbuster success, not by being any good, but by being merely “Good Enough.” Good Enough distracts even the shortest attention spans.
