Fans of Downton Abbey are cordially invited to the third motion picture from Focus Features and Carnival Films. The third entry will follow the recent installment, Downton Abbey: A New Era. The most recent outing from the popular British drama had been released back in 2022. Our own Chris Bumbray would mention in his review of A New Era, “Show mastermind Julian Fellows has written this as fan service, and it shows. There’s nothing wrong with that, but if you’re looking to finally get into Downton Abbey, this is a bad place to start as it not only assumes you’ve seen every episode, but it assumes you know them well. It’s strictly for fans, but I’m willing to bet there are still a lot of those out there.”

Just when you thought it was safe to forget which fork goes with which plate, Focus Features has announced a return to Downton Abbey. Currently titled “Downton Abbey 3” (surely a “Colon Something Something” is coming) this is the third theatrically-released feature film in the franchise that first launched on British television in 2010.
Series creator Julian Fellowes, Oscar-winning writer of Robert Altman’s “Gosford Park” (a very “Downton”-ish film), is writing the script. Simon Curtis, who directed “Downton Abbey: The New Era” in 2022, is back on board. His other work includes “My Week With Marilyn,” and “Woman in Gold.”
The film will boast Paul Giamatti, reprising the part of Harold Levinson, seen in the fourth season Christmas special from 2013. (That appearance won Giamatti an Emmy nomination for Best Drama Guest Actor.) Also new to the film franchise are Joely Richardson, Alessandro Nivola, Simon Russell Beale, and Arty Froushan. It may be this year’s ‘comfort food’ film but Julian Fellowes’ second theatrical sequel to his revered long-running TV show is quality goods — and may be better than the first one. Almost every actor is back, seemingly pleased as plum puddings to repeat their roles as either landed nobility or downstairs staff. The storyline ties a final bow on some characters and plot lines, and in a far more pleasing way than we thought possible. Even casual fans of the franchise ought to be charmed.

Highly anticipated Downton Abbey: A New Era made 1.050 million in Thursday previews that began at 7 p.m. at more than 3,300 theaters. It is Focus Features’ widest ever U.S. release and one that comes with a weight of responsibility as the film to finally catapult older demos back into theaters. Focus Features distribution chief Lisa Bunnell recently promised cinema owners it would. “We have our own superheroes,” she said at CinemaCon.
Based on the smash series created by Julian Fellowes, it’s grossed over 30 million internationally. It premiered in the U.K. and Ireland April 29, launching into the top spot across 746 locations (second-widest release after No Time To Die). It’s certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with a 98 Audience score and 83 Critics score. Tracking to a mid-to-low teens opening.
This is the second cinematic outing of the phenomenon that aired for six seasons Stateside on PBS (2011-2020) and reunites the full cast.

“Downton Abbey: A New Era,” the follow-up to the 2019 feature film and the latest in the story of the aristocratic Crawley family established in the hit series, earned 1.05 million in its Thursday box office previews from 3,300 screens. “A New Era” opens on 3,815 screens this weekend, which is the widest opening for a Focus Features film in the specialty distributor’s history.
There are high hopes that “Downton Abbey: A New Era” will be the film that can attract older audiences back to movie theaters in earnest for the first time since the pandemic began, and by grossing over 30 million thus far internationally, including strong showings in the UK and Ireland, those hopes may yet be realized.
Independent analysts say the film has a decent chance of reaching 20 million at the domestic box office, while the studio is projecting a more conservative opening in the low to mid-teens. Either would be...

A scene from the WWI drama The War Below. Courtesy of Virtual
When you hear WWI, trenches and trench warfare often spring to mind. The War Below is based on a true story about World War I but instead of trenches, it is about some clever, skilled tunnelers seeking to sabotage German forces.
World War I, then called the Great War, and the “War to End All Wars,” was a earth-shattering conflict, changing the nature of warfare, remaking the political and physical landscape, and decimating a generation of young men. The War Below is based on the true story of a group of British sewer tunnelers from Yorkshire, nicknamed the “clay-kickers,” who were brought in by “Hellfire Jack” Col. John Norton-Griffiths to help break the stalemate with the German forces in the battle of Messines in 1917. The result of their near-miraculous efforts was a massive explosion under the enemy line,...

Real-life account of miners recruited in the first world war to burrow beneath German lines is fascinating does well on a limited budget
‘Gentlemen, tonight we may not make history, but we’ll certainly change the bloody geography.” British army colonel Hellfire Jack (Tom Goodman-Hill) gives sterling quotation (though it was apparently said in real life by a different officer) in this spirited film about the tunnelling and sabotage efforts at the battle of Messines in 1917. Despite his doubts, the operation finished in one of the largest non-nuclear explosions ever, killing 10,000 Germans. A fairly new angle for cinema on the first world war (though also the subject of 2010’s Beneath Hill 60), Jp Watts’s subterranean drama has an innately fascinating story, even if the underpinning is of unsound construction in places.
To his shame, pit-village miner William Hawkins (Sam Hazeldine) is turned away for conscription because of a “crackle” in his lungs.

Vital Pictures, an upstart independent production company from Chris Lemos and Luis Guerrero, will produce and distribute the World War I drama “The War Below” from director J.P. Watts, TheWrap can share exclusively.
“The War Below” stars “Peaky Blinders” and “The Innocents” actor Sam Hazeldine alongside Tom Goodman-Hill, Kris Hitchen, Douglas Reith and Sam Clemmett.
The film will be produced and distributed by Vital Pictures in the U.S., a source told TheWrap, making it the company’s third project after the horror-thrillers “Beneath Us” and “You’re Not Alone.”
“The War Below” is based on true events and centers on a group of British miners recruited during WWI to tunnel underneath no man’s land and set bombs from below the German front, all in the hopes of breaking the deadly stalemate of the Battle of Messines.
Watts, known for the short film “The Lost Emperor,” is making his feature-length directorial debut on the film.

It hasn’t been that long since “Downton Abbey” went off the air, but a lot has happened since the British historical drama ended its six-season run in 2016.
With the Focus Features film sequel hitting theaters this weekend, now’s the time to brush up on where we left off with the Crawley family in the series finale.
In his review for TheWrap where he compared the “Downton” film to “The Avengers,” critic Dave White described the theatrical sequel — set in 1927, two years after the finale — as “a densely packed two-hour episode that manages to touch on the lives of every main character (and there are over two dozen of them) and weave together what would amount to a season’s worth of narratives.”

Here's Your First Look at Dumbo in Tim Burton's Live-Action Adaptation with Casting and Plot Details
It was announced at Disney's D23 Expo that Tim Burton had started production on his live action adaptation of Dumbo. They also confirmed the cast, offered some story details, and even brought out a life-size prop of Dumbo to show off, which you can see above! He looks so freakin' adorable! The ears on the prop were floppy and everything! I love the character design. It's completely in line with the original design of the animated version, especially in the eyes.
In case you're wondering who will star in the film, they've got Michael Keaton, Danny DeVito, and Eva Green, who have all previously worked with Burton. The movie also introduces Nico Parker and Finley Hobbins in their first film roles. The cast also includes Roshan Seth, DeObia Oparei, Sharon Rooney and Douglas Reith.

‘Downton Abbey’ Movie: 8 Possible Storylines to Pursue Even After Everybody’s Had Their Happy Ending
“Downton Abbey” ended on the best possible note possible when it wrapped up after six seasons in 2016. Every character that fans cared about had a happy ending. People paired off — even the ones downstairs — and some had babies or babies on the way, a new business venture was started – and better yet, nobody was accused of murder.
Now comes word, according to a recent report, that a “Downton Abbey” movie will likely start cranking into production in 2018. Creator Julian Fellowes has been diligently working and reworking the script, and the cast has publicly stated that they’re game to return to Downton.
But where can it go from here? Short of resurrecting Matthew (Dan Stevens) from the grave for some creepy zombie triad love story, this was as tidy and pleasant an outcome as a fan could hope for. It will be intriguing to see what conflict the movie brings as a matter of course while storytelling but not tarnish the happiness that was granted the characters after so many hard times.

With very few clues to go on though, it’s not clear what will be in store for the Crawleys and friends when they return. The series’ timeline ended around 1925, and Fellowes had stated that he didn’t want to bring the story into the 1930s, so that leaves a window of five years for a time jump. Based on our knowledge of the characters and of general history, here are some of the things we’d want to see in the “Downton Abbey” movie:
The Crawleys in the Workforce
This was already in the works with Tom (Allen Leech) and Henry (Matthew Goode) teaming up to be used cars salesmen. Hopefully that business is flourishing, and maybe even Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) will get involved because of course she’s not going to be a very involved mother even though she’ll have two (or more?) kids by the time the movie rolls around. We could see her taking charge of some innovative business ideas like driving around town to draw in female customers or arranging motor tours to Downton.
Mary Softens
Mary has been and can be a really garbage person at times, but Matthew brought out the best in her. It’s no accident that Mary only after she’s with Henry, that she commits a completely selfless act by not stealing Edith’s wedding-day thunder to reveal she’s pregnant.
A Really Good, Modern Nanny Arc
With the exception of the horrid Nanny West, who had called poor little Sybbie a “wicked little cross-breed,” the nannies haven’t been part of the fold either upstairs or downstairs much. Although it’s accepted that the nobility don’t really have a hand rearing their children, this could all change. Edith is far more involved with her daughter Marigold anyway, and who knows how Tom’s experiences in America may have changed his views. Mary is probably the most traditional, but with the lines blurring between classes, the nanny or nannies could become an indispensable family friend. Or it could be a friend they have already.
Stop Before the Great Depression
Given that this is probably going to be the last time we’ll see the “Downton” cast together since they’re no longer under contract and have been scattered to the winds on different projects, let’s not end on a really depressing (heh) note or cliffhanger. Besides, 1929 is also when frozen food was invented, and we really don’t want the knowledge of that to send the Dowager Countess (Maggie Smith) into an early grave. That said, the age of innovation can’t stop, won’t stop, and we’d love to see someone talking about the wonders of TV or talkies.
Ripped From the Headlines
While we don’t want to see the Great Depression happen, it’s always intriguing to see events of the day pierce the Crawley bubble. We can’t imagine that Edith (Laura Carmichael), the new Marchioness of Hexham, will fully give up journalism, especially since she’ll want to be a good role model to Marigold, and so we could see her getting involved with the biggest news items in some form. The British occupation of Shanghai and the resulting protests could create some new dramatic situations in which lines are drawn about imperialism. And we could see someone, maybe Daisy (Sophie McShera) or Edith getting pulled along the tide of women’s suffrage when women over 21 finally get the vote. Oh, and since Princess Elizabeth is born in 1926, there must be some diehard royalists who will be obsessed with her every move and appearance.

Thomas Barrow Tries to Find Love
Sadly, this wishlist item is probably one of the most difficult storylines to make happen given the time period. As with Rose’s interracial romance that “Downton” tried and failed to make happen, a straightforward romance for Thomas (Robert James-Collier) would be improbable or at least incredibly difficult, and we do not wish Thomas any more pain. Homosexuality at that time was seen as indecent and criminal, consent not even part of the discussion, and it’s no wonder Thomas had issues. That said, despite society’s condemnation, queer people still existed and yes, even loved. We’ll leave the logistics to Fellowes.
Anna and Bates Will Continue to Live Happily Ever After
Nothing bad can or will happen to them ever again. They get as many babies at they want and are very, very happy. We don’t care if that makes for boring storytelling. With rape, accusations of murder, jail time – and hey did we mention rape? – they’ve been through enough already. Ok, maybe some new medical treatment can give Bates (Brendan Coyle) some false hope about losing his limp, but it doesn’t, and Anna (Joanne Froggatt) can tell him how much she loves him because of his bum leg anyway. But that’s it.
The Requisite Giant Celebration
It’s not “Downton Abbey” without a really big set piece gathering everyone together. While we wouldn’t say no to a ball, a picnic or outdoors village activity might be the best because that would mean the servants wouldn’t be required to work too much, even though so many of them have their own separate lives now. A picnic is more egalitarian. But for old times’ sakes, maybe Mrs. Patmore (Lesley Nicol) and Daisy could bake something up again. And we’re not exactly sure what a happy and married Mr. Carson (Jim Carter) and Mrs. Hughes (Phyllis Logan) would look like, but we imagine them dancing and maybe partaking in some drinks. Who else? Lord and Lady Grantham (Hugh Bonneville and Elizabeth McGovern) doting on their grandchildren, and Cousin Isobel (Penelope Wilton) finally enjoying a life of her own with Lord Merton (Douglas Reith) would be essential, with wry commentary by the Dowager Countess of course.

ITV has announced details of this year's Downton Abbey Christmas Day episode.
The two-hour episode will rejoin the Crawley household in the early autumn of 1924 and sees Alun Armstrong (New Tricks, Braveheart) and BAFTA nominee Jane Lapotaire (Blind Justice, Shooting Fish) join the cast.
Armstrong will play Stowell, the butler of Lady Rose's husband Atticus Aldridge and his family, while Lapotaire stars as the much-discussed Princess Irina, the lost wife of Prince Kuragin (played by Rade Sherbedgia).
The episode sees Rose's father-in-law Lord Sinderby rent out Brancaster Castle for grouse shooting season, inviting the Crawley family for a shooting party. It soon becomes apparent that butler Stowell has a serious axe to grind, while a scandalous secret threatens to ruin the holiday for everybody.
