Vanessa Redgrave is the Oscar, Emmy and Tony award-winning actress who has starred in dozens of films over several decades, but how many of those titles are classics? Let’s take a look back at 15 of her greatest movies, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1937, Redgrave was almost destined to become a performer: her parents were Sir Michael Redgrave and Lady Redgrave (Rachel Kempson), her siblings were Lynn Redgrave and Corin Redgrave, her daughters are Joely Richardson and the late Natasha Richardson, and her son-in-law is Liam Neeson. So when it comes to the Redgraves, acting definitely runs in the family.
Redgrave earned her first Oscar nomination in 1966: Best Actress for “Morgan! A Suitable Case for Treatment.” She won 11 years later as Best Supporting Actress for “Julia” (1977) and competed four more times.
Unfortunately, her Oscar victory is best remembered for her controversial acceptance speech than for the performance itself:...

Freshly divorced from American-International Pictures, Roger Corman leaps into the filmic mainstream with a fairly large-scale World War One aviation picture. He competes with the big studios but retains his nonconformist attitude: his retelling of the story of the Red Baron fixates on the theme of the death of chivalry in combat. For his star player Corman picks John Phillip Law, whose on-screen persona is a good fit for one of the first warrior aces of the sky.

Mindy Kaling isn’t just hopeful that Hollywood is changing in the era of #MeToo and Time’s Up — the “Ocean’s 8” star says she’s already noticing a positive shift toward gender parity.
“I’ve seen an enormous amount of change,” Kaling told Variety at the Palisades Village opening gala in Los Angeles, adding, “I’m noticing that even in hiring, that before you used to have to convince people, ‘Hey, the crew need to be like 50% diverse in some way, or ‘The show needs to reflect diversity.’ It used to be convincing people, and now you don’t have to convince people. They know. I don’t know whether it’s fear of being shamed publicly or litigation, but whatever it is, it’s working.”
Kaling didn’t always think the change would come. “Even just transparency of wages, it’s like, whoa, it won’t happen in my daughter’s lifetime.

Danny Dyer wants to do more theatre – to please his mum.
The actor, one of Harold Pinter's favourites, hasn't appeared in a play for more than four years, since he played Sid Vicious in Kurt and Sid at the Trafalgar Studios in 2009. However, he's revealed that he's looking for more stage work.
"My mum loves theatre and has come to see me in every play I've done," the 36-year-old told the Press Association. "She always says, 'Why don't you do another play?'"
He continued: "It needs to be the right play. It's such a long run and you give your life away. You have one day off a week, two shows on a Wednesday, two on a Saturday, so it has to be something you like and are buzzing off.

Next in line to inherit the throne of Royal films is Diana. The film takes audiences into the private realm of one of the world’s most iconic and inescapably public women – the Princess of Wales, Diana (two-time Oscar nominee Naomi Watts) — in the last two years of her meteoric life.
On the occasion of the 16th anniversary of her sudden death, acclaimed director Oliver Hirschbiegel (the Oscar-nominated Downfall) explores Diana’s final rite of passage: a secret love affair with Pakistani heart surgeon Hasnat Khan (Naveen Andrews, “Lost,” The English Patient), the human complications of which reveal the Princess’s climactic days in a compelling new light. Diana is in select theaters now.

Actor known for his roles as clergymen, favourite uncles and tragic-comic characters
There is a great tradition in the rotundity of actors, and Roger Hammond, who has died aged 76 of cancer, stands proudly in a line stretching from Francis L Sullivan and Willoughby Goddard through to Roy Kinnear, Desmond Barrit and Richard Griffiths, though he was probably more malleably benevolent on stage than any of them.
He reeked of kindness, consideration and imperturbability, with a pleasant countenance and a beautiful, soft voice, qualities ideal for unimpeachable clergymen, favourite uncles and tragic-comic characters such as Waffles in Chekhov's Uncle Vanya (whom he played in a 1991 BBC TV film, with David Warner and Ian Holm), a man whose wife left him for another man on his wedding day but who has remained faithful to her and forgiving ever since.

Argentinian director whose films drew heavily on the stories of Jorge Luis Borges
Although the Argentinian director and screenwriter Eduardo de Gregorio, who has died aged 70, had lived in Paris since 1970, his work was always identifiably South American. This can be attributed to the overpowering influence of the labyrinthine stories of Jorge Luis Borges on a generation of South American artists.
De Gregorio brought this Borgesian aura to bear on the five features he directed, and on the screenplays he wrote with Jacques Rivette and Bernardo Bertolucci. In fact, for the latter's The Spider's Stratagem (1970), De Gregorio adapted the Borges story Theme of the Traitor and the Hero, smoothly transposing it from Ireland to Italy. It was an elaborate piece of Oedipal plotting in which, revisiting the village in the Po valley where his father was murdered in 1936, a young man discovers that his father was not a hero, but a traitor.
A very personal episode (featuring the entire world), rife with spoilers, so sit back, and keep your eye on the box.

The Sinking of the Laconia
Kieran Kinsella
August will be an exciting month for fans of British TV as Acorn Media are set to release the critically acclaimed BBC Two production of The Sinking of the Laconia. The drama is based upon real events that occurred during World War II when a German U-boat torpedoed a British ship that was transporting civilians and Italian POWs off the coast of Africa. Having initially mistaken the Laconia for a military vessel, the commander of the U-boat was mortified to discover that he had in fact sunk a civilian boat. Breaking with orders from high command, the German commander began orchestrating a massive rescue operation designed to get the survivors to the relative safety of the West African shoreline. The real-life drama doesn’t end there but I don’t want to give the whole plot away so you’ll just have to...

Richardson Feels Closer To Family After 'Terrible' Grief

Actress Joely Richardson feels closer to her family than ever following the death of three relatives in recent years.
Richardson's sister Natasha passed away in 2009 after suffering a brain injury in a skiing accident in Canada.
The Redgrave acting dynasty was rocked again last year with the death of Richardson's aunt Lynn Redgrave and uncle Corin Redgrave - the siblings of the Nip/Tuck star's mother Vanessa Redgrave.
The deaths hit the family hard, and Richardson and Redgrave have opened up about their grief in a joint interview with Britain's Daily Telegraph newspaper.
When asked by the reporter if their suffering had brought them closer, Richardson replied, "We would say yes. The whole family has been brought closer together, because everyone is so deeply caring of each other, and we all took such a terrible knock."...

Legendary actor and life-long activist Vanessa Redgrave on bad habits, brother Corin and why the battle for the beleaguered Travellers of Dale Farm matters so much to her
When Corin Redgrave suffered a heart attack while pleading with councillors not to evict Travellers from Dale Farm in Essex in summer 2005, his sister, Vanessa, was thousands of miles away in the Us. "If it wasn't for a Traveller giving him mouth to mouth, he would have died," she says. "As it was he had such loss of oxygen to his brain that he had extreme short-term memory loss. Forty Travellers came to the Basildon hospital to pray for him."
So is her current support for the Travellers due to be evicted from Dale Farm later this month to honour her dead brother? "Oh very, very, very much so. The Dale Farm Travellers are inseparable from him for me. It's totally personal.

Ferociously intelligent actor who reigned supreme in Stoppard and Shakespeare
John Wood, who has died aged 81, was one of the greatest stage actors of the past century, especially associated with his roles in the plays of Tom Stoppard. But a combination of his enigmatic privacy and low profile on film – he cropped up a lot without dominating a movie – meant that he remained largely unknown to the wider public.
As with all great actors, you always knew what he was thinking, all the time. Wood was especially striking in the brain-box department. Tall, forbidding and aquiline-featured, he was as much the perfect Sherlock Holmes on stage as he was the ideal Brutus. He exuded ferocious intelligence, and the twinkle in his eye could be as merciless as it was invariably amused.
As the Royal Shakespeare Company's Brutus in Julius Caesar in 1972, he was undoubtedly the noblest Roman of them all,...

King George VI and his wife return to the big screen in film about love affair between Us president Franklin D Roosevelt and distant cousin
The legacy of The King's Speech lives on: King George VI and his wife are to make a return to the big screen in Hyde Park on the Hudson, an adaptation of a BBC radio play, directed by Roger Michell. The production will be bankrolled by Film4, who apparently passed on funding The King's Speech in their eagerness to get this film about the monarch off the ground.
But there's no word on who will play the royal couple this time round, and indeed this time the characters are supporting, rather than the leads. The main focus of the story is the love affair between Us president Franklin D Roosevelt and his distant cousin Margaret Stuckley, which comes to a head in June 1939, when the...

Corin Redgrave, her brother, often donated his talents to raise funds for the charity. "Driving Miss Daisy" opened at the John Golden Theatre on October 25, 2010. The play tells the story of the profound friendship between an elderly Jewish woman (Vanessa Redgrave) and her African-American chauffeur (James Earl Jones). It also stars Boyd Gaines. Founded in 1882, the Actors Fund is a non-profit human services organization that aids professionals working in all forms of entertainment.

We don't think the 2010 Tony Awards snubbed any stars during their In Memoriam montage -- but Rue McClanahan, one of the most well-known stars in the montage, had her name spelled wrong. Oops.
The montage had her name in all caps as "Rue McLanahan." Sorry, Tony Awards. There's an extra "c" in there. McClanahan never got a Tony nomination for her Broadway work but she did win a Best Actress Obie for her off-Broadway work in "Who's Happy Now" in 1969.
We wonder if they'll fix the misspelling for the West Coast broadcast...
Other notable stars shown in the montage were siblings Lynn and Corin Redgrave, who died within weeks of each other in April and May of 2010. Lynn was a three-time Tony nominee (for "Mrs. Warren's Profession," "Shakespeare for My Father" and "The Constant Wife.") though she never won. Corin had one Tony nomination to his name (for "Not About Nightingales").

Richardson had taken the role and even shot the scenes previously but she backed out of the project to spend more time with her family. The 45-year-old buried her aunt Lynn Redgrave in May and her uncle Corin Redgrave in April. Last year she lost her sibling Natasha Richardson in a skiing accident. Joely Richardson has an 18-year-old daughter named Daisy.

Network DVD have announced the UK DVD release of the classic horror series Mystery and Imagination on July 5th 2010. This critically acclaimed and extremely popular anthology series presents a selection of Gothic tales by legendary 19th Century writers: Robert Louis Stevenson’s nihilistic The Suicide Club, Sheridan le Fanu’s Uncle Silas plus Edgar Allen Poe to name but a few, not to mention a most faithful adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.
Famous faces and well – known names lend this most chilling collection of tales authenticity and truth. Ian Holm, Denholm Elliot and Patrick Mower are among the many who turn in powerhouse performances for each of the six specially commissioned, featured-length TV plays. Freddie Jones’s performance as the demented pie-maker, Sweeney Todd, lingers in the memory long after the credit has rolled and the television turned off!

Like many people, when I first heard about Lynn Redgrave's passing at age 67, I immediately thought about her older sister Vanessa, who has now lost her daughter (Natasha Richardson), brother (Corin Redgrave), and sister in the space of 14 months. I spoke to Vanessa, who appears in this month's romantic comedy Letters to Juliet, just last Tuesday evening, and it was clear she was in a melancholy mood, telling me from London, "At the moment I’m sitting on the stoop outside my daughter-in-law’s home and looking at a very misty full moon." I can only hope that her...

Lynn Redgrave, Alan Bates in Silvio Narizzano’s Georgy Girl Lynn Redgrave died Sunday, May 2, at her home in Connecticut. She had been fighting breast cancer for seven years. The two-time Oscar nominee, four-time BAFTA Award nominee, two-time SAG Award nominee, New York Film Critics award winner, two-time Golden Globe winner, daughter of Michael Redgrave and Rachel Kempson, and sister of Vanessa Redgrave and Corin Redgrave, was 67. Lynn’s death is the third in the Redgrave acting dynasty in a little over a year: Corin Redgrave died only a month ago, while Natasha Richardson, daughter of Vanessa Redgrave and the late Oscar-winning director Tony Richardson, died in March 2009 following a skiing accident. Even by the colourful standards of her own family's public profile and professional achievements, Lynn Redgrave, who has died of breast cancer aged 67, was an exceptional personality. Her death seems particularly cruel after the loss of both her niece, Natasha Richardson, after a skiing accident last year, and her brother, Corin Redgrave, last month. The third child of the actors Michael Redgrave and Rachel Kempson, Lynn was a gifted comedian who received her first Oscar nomination for a delightful, clownish performance in the title role of Georgy Girl (1966), one of the defining movies of the so-called swinging 60s. She went on to spend many years living and working in America. Less politically engaged than her older siblings, Vanessa and Corin, she was no less a remarkable talent.

Sad news to end the long weekend on, it has been announced that actress Lynn Redgrave has died at the age of 67.
Part of the Redgrave acting dynasty it is her roles in Georgy Girl and Bill Condon’s Gods and Monsters which will be thought of as her most shining moments, and with good reason. Though not as venerated as her sister Vanessa her body of work is a fine example of a character actress finding a number of iconic roles on stage and screen.
Making mostly TV appearances in recent years, she has been remembered warmly today as a vital part of the Redgrave family, whose illustrious heritage, and superficially controversial nature, often overshadowed the individual members, but Lynn Redgrave carved out a fine career for herself.

Lynn Redgrave Dead At 67

The acting world's Redgrave family has been hit by another tragedy - Lynn Redgrave has died, aged 67.
The Oscar-nominated Georgy Girl star's death comes 14 months after her niece Natasha Richardson lost her life following a skiing accident and a month after brother Corin Redgrave passed away.
Redgrave died on Sunday night at her home in New York.
Recent tabloid reports suggested the revered British thespian was losing her seven-year battle with breast cancer and shocked friends when she arrived at brother Corin's funeral in London in a wheelchair.
One bystander said, "She looks like she only has weeks to live."
Redgrave underwent a mastectomy and chemotherapy treatments in her adopted New York in 2003.
Lynn Redgrave began her acting career in the early 1960s with theatre roles in William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, Billy Liar and The Tulip Tree and quickly became movie star too, appearing in Tom Jones and Georgy Girl, for which she earned Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations.
She fell in love with New York when she made her Broadway debut in Black Comedy in 1967, and later moved there and became a U.S. citizen.
The actress joined sister Vanessa and brother Corin as part of Britain's most beloved theatrical families, appearing in a number of Broadway and West End hits.
But she'll also be remembered for movies like Shine and Gods & Monsters, for which she received another Academy Award nomination, in the late 1990s.
Redgrave was awarded an OBE (Officer of the Order of British Empire) in the 2002 Queen's New Years Honours List for her services to drama.
She was also a published author - her Journal: A Mother and Daughter's Recovery from Breast Cancer, which was co-written by her daughter Annabel Clark, became a labour of love after Redgrave was diagnosed with cancer in 2003.
The actress wed actor and director John Clark in 1967. The couple had three children, Benjamin, Kelly and Annabel, before divorcing in December 2000.
