Season 23 of American Idol continued the audition phase on Sunday night as judges Carrie Underwood, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan traveled to New York, Los Angeles, and Nashville to find music's next superstar. The two-hour episode aired Sunday, March 16 (8 p.m. Et/Pt) with Ryan Seacrest hosting.
Country singer Bryson Quick made one of the night's strongest impressions with his rendition of "Time" by Pink Floyd. The 17-year-old from Seymour, Tenn. strolled on set and revealed that his father, Alex, worked as Luke's fishing guide at Blackberry Farm. "He took you fishing several times," Bryson told the judge — with a photo to prove it. Carrie then jumped in the conversation, bragging, "I've been fishing at Blackberry Farm. I didn't need a guide, though."
Following Bryson's impressive performance, Carrie commented, "Whenever I hear somebody come in who wants to be part of the country crowd, I always think about hearing their...

Born on December 8, 1939 in Chicago, Butler met Curtis Mayfield in the early 1950s, and they later teamed with Sam Gooden and brothers Richard and Arthur Brooks in a doo-wop group before changing their name to The Impressions and signing with Vee-Jay Records. In the history of Saturday Night Live, was anything as secretive and anticipated as the moment this season right before Timothée Chalamet appeared onstage to sing the first of three Bob Dylan numbers? Which songs would they be? How would he sound? For me, it was all strangely familiar — a throwback to the moment when a lucky bunch of us in the SNL audience witnessed a complete-unknown music moment of its time, and from an equally unexpected source.

Named after the ancient city in Egypt, Memphis, Tennessee, has a historic reputation as a rowdy, Mississippi River town. It is also well known for the colorful characters that have made indelible imprints on the music scene. Considered to be the place you go to if you really value music and nightlife, Memphis’ musical joie de vivre radiates from the inside out. Rock and blues likely come to mind first for many, but the city’s legacy includes soul, jazz, power pop, hip-hop, punk, alternative and gospel that shaped the national music scene.

Seated behind his organ at Stax Records’ recording studio in Memphis in the Sixties, Booker T. Jones was a first-hand witness to musical history. As part of Booker T. and the Mg’s, Stax’s house band, Jones played on soul landmarks by Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Carla Thomas and especially Sam & Dave. Two days ago, Jones heard, like most of the world, that Sam Moore had died at the age of 89, depriving American music of another legend. (His on-and-off musical partner Dave Prater died in 1988.)

With Dolly Parton and Eminem having been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in recent years, there’s been debate in some circles about the organization dropping the “rock and roll” part of its name. In a recent interview with Vulture, Rock Hall chairman John Sykes pushed back against the idea, saying it was important to “communicate that rock and roll is open to all.”
“I think it’s because some people don’t understand the meaning of rock and roll,” Sykes said. “If you go back to the original sound in the ’50s, it was everything. As Missy Elliot calls it, it was a gumbo. It just became known as rock and roll. So when I hear people say, ‘You should just change it to the Music Hall of Fame,’ rock and roll has pretty much covered all of that territory. Rather than throwing the name out,...

Richard Perry, a hitmaking record producer with a flair for both standards and contemporary sounds whose many successes included Carly Simon’s “You’re So Vain,” Rod Stewart’s “The Great American Songbook” series and a Ringo Starr album featuring all four Beatles, died Tuesday. He was 82.
Perry, a recipient of a Grammys Trustee Award in 2015, died at a Los Angeles hospital after suffering cardiac arrest, friend Daphna Kastner said.
“He maximized his time here,” said Kastner, who called him a “father friend” and said he was godfather to her son. “He was generous, fun, sweet and made the world a better place. The world is a little less sweeter without him here. But it’s a little bit sweeter in heaven.”

One of the most anticipated new films of this Christmas season has been A Complete Unknown, the folk music film that features Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan. The film culminates with his infamous performance at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965, which is exactly the year that Dylan began participating in what would become Don't Look Back. The D.A. Pennebaker film differentiates itself from other Dylan documentaries and concert films. It's a perfect "portrait of the artist as a young man," and while it captures some incredible music, it's more about Dylan's persona and PR.
Don't Look Back is now streaming for free on The Criterion Channel. The film is also a part of The Criterion Collection, featuring a glorious 4K remaster of the film with hours upon hours of special features. They describe Don't Look Back in this way:

As anyone who’s recently attended a show by Foreigner or Lynyrd Skynyrd knows, it’s become as common as a guitar solo to see a classic rock & roll outfit without any original members in the lineup. But what few may realize is that the template for that concept may have started 80 years ago today — with the death of a big-band musician.
On Dec. 15, 1944, Glenn Miller, one of the kings of the big-band scene — the dance-pop of its time — stepped aboard a military plane to cross the English Channel from England to France.

This year’s Black Friday Record Store Day had its usual share of curios: a version of Billie Eilish’s Hit Me Hard and Soft with her vocals isolated, Rage Against the Machine’s 2000 set at the Democratic National Convention, a collection of outtakes from Yes’ Fragile, a previously unreleased 1991 Van Halen show, and a blue-vinyl version of Earl Sweatshirts’ Feet of Clay among them.
And then there’s the live album some of us never thought we’d see or hear.

Argue all you want about last night’s contest between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump. But there’s no debating the fact that the Democrats are fiercely ahead in an equally important battle: the crate-digging wars.

If “We Are the World” marked The Greatest Night in Pop, then the Monterey International Pop Festival can easily be considered one of the most remarkable weekends in rock history. Yes, Otis Redding gave the performance of a lifetime and Ravi Shankar secured his legendary status, but it was Jimi Hendrix whose set goes down in history as fire, culminating in him setting his guitar ablaze during a transcendent rendition of “Wild Thing.” That night will no doubt be part of the upcoming doc about the life, times and experiences of Jimi Hendrix.

Stax: Soulsville U.S.A., Jamila Wignot’s four-part HBO documentary about the legendary Memphis record label that produced Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, and others, offers incredible first-person stories. At one point, Booker T. Jones sits at a piano and shows exactly how he stumbled on the chords that became the 1962 chart-topper “Green Onions.”
But not long after she began working on the project, Wignot realized the story of Stax went much deeper. The label, which began (as Satellite Records) in 1957 and closed in 1975, spanned an intensely tumultuous period in American history,...

In a small record store on McLemore Avenue, the soulful sound of Stax Records was born. This former movie theater in the South Memphis neighborhood might not have seemed the likeliest spot to launch a musical revolution. But in the 1960s, under the leadership of siblings Jim Stewart and Estelle Axton, this unassuming storefront became the epicenter of a new genre—Southern soul.
With artists like Otis Redding, Carla Thomas, and The Bar-Kays laying down tracks in the studio upstairs, Stax developed a raw, funky sound unlike anything coming out of Motown up north. Male-female duos like Sam & Dave brought the noise with rousing call-and-response songs, while the house band Booker T. & the MGs laid down some of the tightest grooves in popular music. It was soul music perfected for the church and the dance hall.

Jonathan Majors is still open to reprising his slated role of Kang the Conqueror for the MCU — that is, if Marvel would have him back.
Majors was fired from Marvel parent company Walt Disney Co. after being found guilty of assault and harassment in December 2023. The actor had appeared as Kang in “Loki” Season 2 and “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.” The character was set to lead two MCU installments, “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty” and “Avengers: Secret Wars,” to bring in the new Phase of the franchise.
After his firing, rumors circulated that Majors was going to be recast. Instead, it was announced that Robert Downey Jr. would instead be playing the new MCU baddie Doctor Doom, with the upcoming “Avengers” film retitled “Avengers: Doomsday.” Academy Award winner Downey previously played Iron Man for more than a decade in the MCU.
However, Downey being back doesn’t mean that Majors is giving up hope.

As Dan Aykroyd reminds us in his enjoyable new Audible Original, Blues Brothers: The Arc of Gratitude, there was a moment in 1978 when his friend and collaborator John Belushi was at the center of a smash-hit album, movie, and TV show, all at once. The album in question was Briefcase Full of Blues, by the Blues Brothers, Aykroyd and Belushi’s band — who went from a fun side project to a powerhouse band with their own, now-legendary movie, 1980’s The Blues Brothers. (The movie, of course, was Animal House, and...

Jamila Wignot understood going in to her assignment as director of the four-part HBO documentary series “Stax: Soulsville, U.S.A.” that she had her work cut out to hit a certain sweet spot. She was tasked to satisfy both people who have no clue about the legendary and influential Memphis-based record label and soul music producer that launched the careers of Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, Carla Thomas, Booker T. and the M.G.’s, Sam and Dave and many other acts through the 1960s and ’70s – and those who were completely steeped in its colorful (pun intended) history. “It was very challenging,” she admits, “because music fanatics can be exceptionally particular about what they want their favorite label or music doc to cover. But I think the goal is to always try to satisfy he folks who are already kind of deeply in the know and hopefully provide them...

As a child of the 1980s, I thought I knew pretty much everything I needed to know about Wham!, just as I thought I had a pretty good handle on the behind the scenes of the late-night all-star recording of “We Are the World.” But maybe that’s why I enjoyed the docs “Wham!” and “The Greatest Night in Pop” so much — a mix of the familiar with those moments of surprise.
In the case of “Wham!,” it’s how Andrew Ridgeley managed to be so gracious as his buddy George Michael went on to a massively successful solo career. In “The Greatest Night in Pop,” I learned just how instrumental Lionel Richie was in serving as traffic cop for producer Quincy Jones in creating “We Are The World” with dozens of A-list musicians over just one late night. You don’t have to be an expert on classic soul and R&b to recognize the American music monuments that emerged from Stax Records in the Sixties and Seventies. Sam & Dave’s “Soul Man,” Otis Redding’s “Respect” and “(Sittin’ on) The Dock of the Bay,” Isaac Hayes’ “Theme From Shaft,” and the Staple Singers’ “I’ll Take You There” — just a few of Stax’s greatest hits — made the case that the Memphis-based record company was the Southern version of Motown.
