Katie Couric, the former anchor of CBS Evening News, weighed in on the network’s recent overhaul of the nightly broadcast, calling it “more than a little disappointing” that Norah O’Donnell’s successors will be two male anchors.
The network recently announced that John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois would be anchoring CBS Evening News after O’Donnell’s steps down following the November election.
Couric wrote in an op ed in The New York Times, “Don’t get me wrong: I know, like and respect these two journalists. But soon, on the big three networks, there will be four male anchors. Yes, the talented Margaret Brennan will be contributing stories from the Washington bureau for CBS, but the two people who will be greeting Americans watching the CBS evening newscast will be men.”

During his iconic career at CBS News, Dan Rather was on the ground in Dallas moments after President Kennedy is assassinated; covered the Civil Rights moment and the Vietnam War; and was the only anchor in China’s Tiananmen Square before the crackdown on protesters. He also famously was roughed up during the 1968 Democratic National Convention — which inspired Variety to ask Rather, still going strong at 92 (you can read his current “Steady” columns at steady.substack.com), to reflect on that tumultuous moment in U.S. politics and how it compares to what has happened in 2024.
One of the hallmarks of a good broadcast journalist is the ability to roll with the proverbial punches during live events. You have to be a good ad-libber and be able to pivot, ready for the unexpected. Suffice it to say that on March 31, 1968, I was not ready when President Lyndon Johnson delivered a shocker.

CBS wants to get back in the battle for evening-news viewers with a new take on the format that looks very little like the evening news viewers have come to know.
The network plans to rebuild its long-running “CBS Evening News,” retooling anchors, format and segments in a bid to make the half-hour once led by Walter Cronkite more valuable for modern news viewers who don’t recognize the show as the cultural touchstone it was in the 1960s and 70s.
After the 2024 election, with current anchor Norah O’Donnell stepping away for a new senior correspondent role at CBS News, executives at the Paramount Global news operation will put the show under the aegis of Bill Owens, the executive producer of “60 Minutes.” Working with a new on-air team that includes co-anchors John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois, chief weathercaster Lonnie Quinn and Washington-based “Face The Nation” moderator Margaret Brennan,...

CBS Evening News will be revamped after the election, with John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois anchoring from New York and leading an ensemble that includes Margaret Brennan regularly leading coverage from Washington, D.C. and Lonnie Quinn providing weather segments.
Norah O’Donnell, who has anchored the newscast for the past five years, announced earlier this week that she is stepping down after the election to serve as a senior correspondent focused on major one-on-one interviews and longform reporting.
In addition to the new format, the plans are to infuse the broadcast with more 60 Minutes content and correspondents, with that show’s executive producer Bill Owens expanding his role and serving as supervising producer of the evening newscast. Correspondents from the show will be filing for the Evening News “when they have big news to break,” according to a memo that went out to staffers today from Wendy McMahon, the CEO of CBS News and Stations.

Norah O’Donnell is exiting her role as anchor of CBS Evening News after the election, and will take on a new role as senior correspondent doing high-profile sit-down interviews.
O’Donnell has been in the anchor chair since 2019; she had previously been co-anchor of CBS This Morning and, before that, chief White House correspondent.
No successor was named. Wendy McMahon, CEO of CBS News and Stations, wrote in a memo to staffers that plans for the newscast would be announced soon and that the network remained “committed to its mission.”
“It’s time to do something different,” O’Donnell wrote in a memo to staff. “This presidential election will be my seventh as a journalist, and for many of us in this business we tend to look at our careers in terms of these milestone events.”
She added, “I’ll still be anchoring all of our major coverage this year, election night and hopefully a debate!

Norah O’Donnell’s run as anchor of CBS Evening News is coming to an end, but the veteran journalist is not leaving CBS News.
O’Donnell is set to leave the anchor desk after the 2024 presidential election — her seventh U.S. election she has covered as a journalist — and will become CBS News special correspondent at the network. In her new role, she will conduct newsmaking interviews and other reports for CBS News programming with appearances on CBS Evening News and 60 Minutes.
“In this new role, Norah will have the time and the support to deliver even more of the exceptional stories she is known,” wrote Wendy McMahon, president and CEO of CBS News and Stations, in a memo to staff (full note below).
In her new role, O’Donnell will contribute newsmaker interviews across CBS platforms, including streaming, digital, primetime and Paramount+. That will include appearances on other news broadcasts besides CBS Evening News.

Norah O’Donnell will cede the reins of the venerable “CBS Evening News” after the 2024 presidential election in favor of a new role as a senior correspondent who will seek out big interviews and opportunities for deeper reporting, the latest major change at CBS News after its business was merged with that of the local-tv operations of parent company Paramount Global.
O’Donnell, who recently celebrated her fifth year in the anchor chair, sees an opportunity to pursue signature interviews with top newsmakers — something that proved appealing to her after logging stints as both a morning-show co-anchor and an evening-news presence and after her recent sit-down with Pope Francis earlier this year.
“Together, our team has won Emmy, Murrow, and DuPont awards. We managed to anchor in-studio through Covid; we took the broadcast on the road from aircraft carriers to the Middle East, and around the world. We were privileged to conduct...

When Vanity Fair gathered 10 male late-night TV hosts for a photo shoot for its September 2015 issue, it left someone out.
Stephen Colbert, James Corden, Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel, Conan O’Brien, John Oliver, Bill Maher, Trevor Noah — who had yet to host The Daily Show — Seth Meyers and Larry Wilmore were all in the photograph.
However, Andy Cohen, whose Watch What Happens Live already had been airing on Bravo for six years, wasn’t. And he hasn’t forgotten that.
“I was very conscious that I wanted to be part of the late-night conversation,” Cohen tells Deadline. He admits that when he found out he wasn’t invited, he thought “this kind of sucks” and he was “salty” about the omission. “I know what we’re doing; I know what it means to people and I know what it means to me.”

Dan Rather returned to CBS today for an interview on CBS Sunday Morning, his first appearance coming days before the debut of a Netflix documentary on his life.
Rather spent 44 years at the network, 24 as anchor of the CBS Evening News. He departed under a cloud after an investigation into then-President George W. Bush’s military record raised questions about journalistic methodology. Rather exited as anchor for the last time on March 9, 2005, and left CBS 15 months later when his contract expired.
“Without apology or explanation, I miss CBS,” Rather told correspondent Lee Cowan in the interview that aired Sunday. “I’ve missed it since the day I left.”
Asked what made him want to become a reporter in the first place, Rather said, “I’ve never quite known the answer to that question. All I know is, it’s the only thing I ever wanted to be, was a reporter.

There’s no rule that says that when the son or daughter of a famous filmmaker becomes a director too, he or she has to follow in their parent’s artistic footsteps. But the children of director David Cronenberg have turned out to be chips off the old shock-theater block. In movies like “Possessor” and “Infinity Pool,” the 44-year-old Brandon Cronenberg has proved himself to be a skillful purveyor of body horror and I-dare-you-not-to-look-away extremity. And now, with “Humane,” the 39-year-old Caitlin Cronenberg has directed her own first feature, a dark-as-midnight domestic thriller about how climate change, totalitarianism, and euthanasia all go together. The movie, which takes the form of a dinner party from hell, is Caitlin Cronenberg’s own thing, but it’s all about crimes of the future.
Few real-world topics are more urgent than climate change, yet as dramatic feature-film material the meltdown of the planet has...

Former CBS News anchor Dan Rather is set to be interviewed April 25 on CBS Sunday Morning 18 years after his controversial exit from the network.
The episode logline reads, “Lee Cowan talks with former CBS News anchor Dan Rather about his work at CBS and his life in news.”
The 92-year-old journalist exited under a cloud. A 60 Minutes II report in 2004 made allegations that President George W. Bush went Awol during part of his time in the Texas Air National Guard.
The Bush administration disputed the authenticity of the documents cited in the story. CBS investigated and found that the piece disregarded “fundamental journalistic principles.” The documents were not proved to be forgeries, casting doubts on the entire incident.
Rather was removed from the anchor desk in 2005 before being fired the subsequent year. Producer Mary Mapes and three news executives were also let go from CBS for their involvement.

Dan Rather is returning to CBS News.
Nearly 20 years after stepping down as the anchor of the CBS Evening News, and 18 years after he last appeared on the network, the anchor will return to a CBS program. This time, he will be the subject of an interview on CBS Sunday Morning.
Per a release from CBS, “Lee Cowan talks with former CBS News anchor Dan Rather about his work at CBS and his life in news.”
A source confirms that it will be Rather’s first appearance on a CBS News program since he formally left the network under tumultuous circumstances nearly two decades ago.
Rather said that he was the scapegoat in a scandal over a 2004 report for 60 Minutes II on then-President George W. Bush’s military record, and the anchor subsequently sued the network for breach of contract. The 60 Minutes spin-off was canceled less than a year later.

Back in 2002, Toby Keith appeared on the very first episode of Total Nonstop Action Wrestling to perform his song “Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue (The Angry American)” — only to be interrupted midway through by the dastardly wrestler Jeff Jarrett. There is maybe no better metaphor for the kitschy nationalist spectacle of the era. A few years before, a heel in wrestling might have incited boos and jeers from the crowd by burning an American flag. But in the immediate aftermath of 9/11, you make them hate you by interrupting a Toby Keith concert.

Depending on whom you ask, Don Lemon is planting his feet firmly in media’s next frontier. Or its last one.
The former CNN star anchor is the latest in a parade of onetime TV-news personnel to dip their toes into the entrepreneurial waters of digital and social media. He announced in early January that he would launch “The Don Lemon Show” on X, part of a bid to build a broader media outlet. “Don is extremely passionate about launching his own media company,” says Oren Rosenbaum, partner and head of audio at UTA, which represented Lemon in his deal with the social-media giant. “His first priority is the show, and as that becomes more and more successful, he will build a business around that and become a platform for other voices.”
Lemon isn’t alone. Tucker Carlson, the former Fox News opinion host, is using X for similar goals.

Charles Osgood, the longtime host of CBS Sunday Morning and the radio program The Osgood File, died today at his home in New Jersey, the network said. He was 91.
His family said that the cause of death was dementia, according to the network where he’d worked for 45 years.
With a folksy demeanor, calming voice and wit, the bowtie-wearing Osgood anchored Sunday Morning from 1994-2016, succeeding its original host, Charles Kuralt. He won a Peabody Award and a pair of Daytime Emmys for the show in the mid-2010s and received the News & Documentary Emmys’ Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017.

At the turn of the millennium, when Microsoft still owned 50 percent of MSNBC, and before Fox News cemented itself as ratings leader post-9/11, CNN was cable news king.
Sure, the broadcast networks still had vast audiences, but the economics of CNN were vastly superior, with its lucrative and enduring cable carriage fees (it turns out that 2000 was just about the peak of pay TV, with around 100 million homes paying for cable or satellite), and its robust advertising business.
CNN’s unparalleled strengths: Its vast newsgathering resources, its ubiquity on TV sets in the U.S. and around the world, and its sterling reputation among consumers, led to an idea at the time that intrigued executives at Viacom, which had acquired CBS in 1999: A merger of CNN and CBS News.
The idea, according to an executive involved in the talks at the time, would have seen CNN effectively take over CBS News.

The land troubles for the Reels family, which are chronicled in Raoul Peck’s new documentary “Silver Dollar Road,” all started when Elijah Reels passed away without a will. This left everyone in the family as a stakeholder in the property. “Because everybody is a stakeholder of the property, whether you live on it or move to New Jersey or Texas, you somehow have a piece of the property and one particular brother pretended that he owned that little 13 acres on the water,” Peck tells Gold Derby during our recent web chat (watch the exclusive video interview above). This has allowed the property to be sold to Adam’s Creek Associates, despite the Reels family having lived on that property for more than a century. “The justice itself has not played a good role in that story because they allowed the exploitations of loopholes and that the family was not properly informed of the situation.

With a running time of 96 minutes, Frank Marshall’s Rather, a documentary about the life and times of Dan Rather, is premiering at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival opposite Luke Korem’s Milli Vanilli, a 106-minute documentary about the life and times of Milli Vanilli. I know that both documentaries exist in their own vacuums and the comparison is apples to rutabagas, but I’m still confident in saying this: A definitive documentary about Dan Rather is going to require more time to properly tell its story than a definitive documentary about Milli Vanilli.
In its home stretch, Rather mentions that for a young generation weaned on social media, Dan Rather is an amusingly cantankerous Twitter truth-teller, but those new fans have very little awareness that he was once a revered (and briefly disgraced) journalist and broadcast nightly news anchor. Leaving aside that those Rather-adoring whelps similarly don’t...

“Any controversial story one does, involving powerful people… Eventually you’re going to have to face the furnace and take the heat,” Dan Rather explains early in Frank Marshall’s bio-documentary “Rather.” “And unless you’re prepared to do that, then you’re going to have to get another line of work.” It’s an inspiring notion—and a pointed one, based on how Rather first made his reputation and then lost it. He’s now 91 years old, an elder statesman of American journalism and a jocular presence on social media, where his down-home wisdom and pointed criticism have earned him a new generation of fans.

For a man so often associated with heavy-hitting directors like Steven Spielberg and Peter Bogdanovich, producer and documentarian Frank Marshall has crafted classics of his own. From thrilling narrative features like “Arachnophobia” to intense documentaries like “The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart,” Marshall is a storyteller who likes making films about storytellers.
Thus his latest documentary, “Rather,” which premieres Friday at the Tribeca Film Festival, is about a man who shaped the historical stories of the recent past: news anchor Dan Rather. “I like telling stories about ordinary people in extraordinary situations,” Marshall told TheWrap. “It’s so interesting to see how these people who are inspired and then passionate about what they want to do, how they achieve that success.” In this case, Marshall wanted to track Rather’s 60-year career in news and how he’s become just as embraced by the TikTok generation...

At the age of 91, journalism legend Dan Rather remains on top of the news.
Take the recent CNN town hall with former President – and current candidate – Donald Trump. Bad idea, he says.
“I think it’s clear it was a mistake to do the kind of quote ‘town hall’ unquote that CNN put on,” he tells Deadline. “It allowed straight out propaganda. It was an unpaid political commercial.”
Rather isn’t saying the news media shouldn’t cover candidate Trump. He’s saying it comes down to whether the interview happens live.
“There are times, for example in a debate for the Republican nomination, when of course it should be covered live,” he notes. “But he should not be given an opportunity to just ramble on, tell one lie after another, unchallenged.” Rather adds, “I’m not here to tell anybody how to run their journalism operation. I’ve made my mistakes,...
