Editors Nathan Orloff and Shane Reed were given a new kind of experimental freedom on “Saturday Night,” Jason Reitman’s behind-the-scenes re-enactment of how NBC’s revolutionary late-night sketch comedy show made its live debut on October 11, 1975.
By following anxious producer Lorne Michaels (Gabriel Labelle) as he guides his cast and crew through rehearsals, the editing duo (who previously cut Reitman’s “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire”) essentially make audiences into a fly on the wall during the make or break 90-minute lead up to showtime. Making it all the more interesting, of course, is that the soon-to-be-legendary, “Not Ready for Prime Time Players,” consists of Dan Aykroyd (Dylan O’Brien), John Belushi (Matt Wood), Chevy Chase (Cory Michael Smith), Jane Curtin (Kim Matula), Garrett Morris (Lamorne Morris), Laraine Newman (Emily Fairn), and Gilda Radner (Ella Hunt).
“It was really about the availability of bandwidth,” Reed told IndieWire. “Nathan was on set and I was cutting from L.

When Lamorne Morris was cast as Garrett Morris (no relation) in “Saturday Night” — the movie about the 90 minutes leading up to the first 1975 broadcast of “Saturday Night Live” — he ignored explicit instructions from director Jason Reitman by reaching out to the man he was to portray.
Garrett Morris’ place in “SNL” lore is unique: He was the sketch-comedy show’s first Black cast member. Morris, then a 37-year-old playwright and singer, was originally hired as a writer, but after “SNL” creator Lorne Michaels got hip to his work in the 1975 comedy “Cooley High,” he was asked to audition to be one of the “Not Ready for Primetime Players.” In the film, Morris struggles to find his place in the ensemble, alongside seasoned improvisers like John Belushi and Gilda Radner.

Cory Michael Smith had some big shoes to fill with his latest role.
The Saturday Night actor recently opened up about the “terror” of mastering his portrayal of Chevy Chase and his “very compulsive” process to prepare for the film, which premiered Friday on the 49th anniversary of Saturday Night Live‘s debut.
“I have loved Chevy Chase since I was a kid. He’s one of my favorite comedic actors,” he told People. “It was such an honor that I did not want to mess this up, and I didn’t want to mess my career up. So I really dove in, and for about two months I would only let myself watch Chevy Chase.

Comedian Dan Aykroyd has high praise for the new film “Saturday Night,” which tells the story of the first episode of “Saturday Night Live.” Aykroyd was part of the original cast of NBC’s groundbreaking sketch comedy show when it debuted in 1975. After seeing director Jason Reitman’s movie at his local theater, Aykroyd called it a “stand-alone masterpiece” that accurately captures the intense process of creating the pioneering TV program.
Aykroyd took to the social media platform X to share his thoughts about “Saturday Night.” He said the film is “propulsive, engaging, funny, beautifully cast and acted, suspenseful, adventurous, [and] music-filled.” The movie veteran believes the film authentically portrays the frantic 90 minutes before the very first “SNL” broadcast. As an original cast member, Aykroyd felt like he “relived it wonderfully again” while watching Reitman’s movie. He encourages audiences to see the film “whether you know the show or not.

It was no small feat to get “Saturday Night Live” off the ground at NBC, and as a result, the cast of “Saturday Night” is pretty huge. In many cases, the actors also look eerily similar to the people they’re playing.
Hitting theaters everywhere on Oct. 11 after a limited theatrical release in New York and Los Angeles, Jason Reitman’s “Saturday Night” tells the story of the 90 minutes right before the first-ever episode of “SNL.” It’s chaotic and at the time, even Lorne Michaels couldn’t explain what the show was going to be.
Below, you’ll find the cast of “Saturday Night” alongside what their real-life counterparts looked like back then.

Lorne Michaels is the creator and, to this day, producer of “Saturday Night Live.” He’s played in “Saturday Night” by Gabriel Labelle, who had his breakout role in Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans.

Jason Reitman's superb "Saturday Night" features 80 speaking parts, along with dozens of background actors, and a camera that effortlessly weaves through a busy set while capturing the disorderly and anarchic production of the first episode of "Saturday Night Live." That required a lot of meticulous planning, especially when there are long single-take shots that move seamlessly throughout a set that has no edge of frame, which means that everything on that set was designed as if all of it could be seen on camera in any given moment. But even with such careful organization needed to realize this hilarious, frenzied chronicle of showbiz history, Reitman still had moments of last minute inspiration, and one of them resulted in a key scene that serves as a significant moment of realization for showrunner Lorne Michaels (played by "The Fablemans" star Gabriel Labelle).

In 2008, director Jason Reitman lived his “SNL” dream.
He was fresh off the success of “Juno,” which earned Reitman a Best Director Oscar nomination and the film a Best Picture nomination. His agent reached out to Lorne Michaels and relayed Reitman’s wish — to do a guest writing stint on “Saturday Night Live.” And, incredibly, it happened.
“It was like getting to suit up for the Los Angeles Lakers for one night,” Reitman told TheWrap. He and “SNL” writer Simon Rich stayed up until four in the morning on a Tuesday night working on ideas. On Wednesday, they took their three sketch ideas to the table read. “And then later that afternoon I got to be there for the moment when they come out of Lorne’s office and pinned a piece of paper to the wall,” Reitman said. That’s when he found out that one of his sketches...

Rachel Sennott didn’t get into the premier sketch comedy group during her tenure at NYU. Now she’s playing one of the architects of the world’s most famous sketch comedy show in Jason Reitman’s Saturday Night. Co-written by the latter and Gil Kenan, the biographical comedy-drama chronicles the messy 90-minute period before the first episode of Saturday Night Live on Oct. 11, 1975. Sennott portrays writer Rosie Shuster, who’s also the first wife of SNL creator Lorne Michaels (Gabriel Labelle). And much like their ambitious attempt to shake up NBC’s Saturday night programming, their marriage, as depicted in the film, is in a similarly fragile, yet oddly collaborative, state.
In contrast with a lot of her castmates, Sennott didn’t have a great deal of existing material to reference during prep, but she did have the ultimate resource one phone call away.
“I spoke to Rosie, which was amazing.

We’re about to enter another busy weekend with way too many new releases, but “Joker: Folie à Deux” isn’t likely to win a second week either way, as another clown bursts into theaters. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
Before we get to the new movies, we need to examine whether Todd Phillips‘ “Joker: Folie à Deux” can possibly stay atop the box office after such horrible reviews and a terrible opening weekend. On Sunday, Warner Bros. estimated a $40 million opening, but actually, it was lower with just $37.8 million. Its “D” CinemaScore makes it likely to drop 65% to 70% or even more in its second weekend, which would knock it down to $11.5 million or less. That sets up a scenario where DreamWorks Animation’s “The Wild Robot” can capitalize on its great word-of-mouth and general lack of family films to beat it by Sunday, even if...

Saturday Night Live has long been known for its stars’ impressions of everyone from current politicians like Kamala Harris to historical figures like Vincent Price. Saturday Night, the movie set in the moments before its series premiere, isn’t aiming for verisimilitude on that level: the actors might be playing real-life people, but they’re also creating characters. The object isn’t an SNL, or even MADtv-level impersonation, and the performances shouldn’t really be judged on that basis.
So consider the ranking below — focused solely on the actors playing the show’s original seven cast members, known as the Not Ready for Primetime Players — purely a novelty, and don’t use it to fill out your ballot when it’s time to vote for the Oscars.

When I first heard about the premise of Jason Reitman’s “Saturday Night” — the entire film takes place in the 90 minutes leading up to the late-night comedy landmark’s first episode in 1975 — I confess that I found the idea to be a head-scratcher. Sure, it seemed like there would be a backstage let’s-put-on-a-show “What can go wrong? Everything can go wrong!” real-time frenetic bustle to the thing. And that sounded like fun.
More to the point, though: The show that came to be called “Saturday Night Live” — in the first season, it was just called “Saturday Night” — didn’t come together overnight, or in 90 minutes. A universe of pitching and planning and casting and writing, along with an infinite number of decisions large and small, went into the formation of a revolutionary new television comedy spirit and form. How was “Saturday Night” created? How was it dreamed up? How did it all come together?...

Hannah Einbinder made a surprise cameo in Saturday Night Live’s landmark 50th season premiere on Saturday, September 28, joining host Jean Smart in introducing musical guest Jelly Roll’s performance of the song “Liar.” Einbinder’s appearance shouldn’t be that much of a surprise: She and Smart are the lead stars of the Max comedy Hacks, but Einbinder is also part of the SNL family as the daughter of original cast member Laraine Newman. Newman joined Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, Chevy Chase, George Coe, Jane Curtin, Garrett Morris, Michael O’Donoghue, and Gilda Radner in the SNL Season 1 cast in 1975 and stayed on the NBC sketch-comedy show for five years. She married voice actor Chad Einbinder in 1991, and the couple welcomed Einbinder in 1995. Newman will be played by Emily Fairn in the upcoming movie about SNL‘s very first episode, Saturday Night, coming to theaters on October 11. Hannah Einbinder is here!

Even if the first season had been its only season, “Saturday Night Live” still would have earned a place in TV history. The series’ original cast, know as “The Not Ready for Prime-Time Players,” launched the careers of John Belushi, Gilda Radner, Dan Aykroyd, Garrett Morris, Chevy Chase, Jane Curtin and Laraine Newman. In the almost 50 years since, “SNL” has jumpstarted the careers of many of the greatest comedians of each generation, including Bill Murray (who joined in Season 2), Dana Carvey, Eddie Murphy, Mike Myers, Will Ferrell, Adam Sandler, Kristen Wiig, and Tina Fey – just to name a few – and led to films based on sketches from the series, such as “The Blues Brothers” (1980) and “Wayne’s World” (1992).

It’s a historical season for Saturday Night Live. The lights came up on the sketch comedy in 1975. Since then, the show has been a touchstone for social issues, politics, and unforgettable musical performances, and it has launched the careers of some of the industry’s most influential writers and comedians. So when does this milestone kick off?
‘Saturday Night Live’ kicks off season 50 on Sept. 28

He is slightly embarrassed to admit it, but Nicholas Podany first watched When Harry Met Sally as he was gearing up for an audition to portray the classic rom-com’s star, Billy Crystal.
Podany was going out for Jason Retiman’s Saturday Night (in theaters this weekend in limited release before opening wider on Oct 11.) Told in real-time, it tracks the 90 madcap minutes before the first episode of Saturday Night Live in 1975.
Podany, who trained at Julliard and had appeared on Broadway in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, auditioned first for SNL cast member Dan Aykroyd. For that self-tape, he recreated Aykroyd’s “Super Bass-o-Matic” sketch that saw the actor pulverizing a bass in a blender. Podany was then asked to audition for the role of a young Lorne Michaels and got a callback, but not for Michaels. Instead, he was sent pages from the script to read for a young Crystal.

Dylan O’Brien is keeping a pretty cool head after undertaking his latest role.
The Saturday Night actor said he “can’t wait” to meet Dan Aykroyd following his portrayal of the Saturday Night Live alum in the upcoming Jason Reitman-helmed film, which premieres nationwide on Oct. 11, the 49th anniversary of the NBC sketch comedy show’s first episode.
“I’m okay if my guy hates it. It’s acceptance. That was my method,” he joked to People about Aykroyd’s potential reaction to his performance.
“I hear we’re very similar, in a way that I never knew,” added O’Brien. “I feel like we’re going to get along.”

Jason Reitman’s Saturday Night has earned rave reviews (including from us) from the festival circuit and is now poised to hit theaters. It opens today in limited release before expanding nationwide on October 11th, which actually marks the 49th anniversary of the first-ever episode of Saturday Night Live. The movie documents the frantic ninety-minute lead-up to the show’s premiere, depicting how it all very nearly went off the rails for a young Lorne Michaels, who’s played here by The Fabelmans star Gabriel Labelle.
While the film was playing at TIFF (Toronto International Film Fest), we had a chance to sit down and chat with most of the young cast playing all of the various SNL legends. In addition to Gabriel Labelle, we spoke to rising star Rachel Sennott, who plays SNL writer Rose Shuster, Dylan O’Brien, who makes for a surprisingly uncanny Dan Aykroyd, Cory Michael Smith,...

Jean Smart is excited to kick of “Saturday Night Live” Season 50 as a first-time host — she just wants a little more of it to be about her.
In a newly released promo for the gig on Wednesday, the “Hacks” Emmy winner grows increasingly frustrated that she’s promoting “50 years of laughs” and walk-down-memory-lane clips instead of focusing on her.
“Can we make this a little bit more about me?” she shouts from the Studio 8H stage. Instead, editors behind the one-minute NBC ad resort to cutting her off before she can get a full thought out.
“You’re not actually going to show a clip from every sea–,” she manages to get out between quick cuts of Dan Aykroyd, George Carlin, Eddie Murphy, Gilda Radner and others.
“You cut me off, and that’s kind of ru–,” she says next before resorting to a shout: “Knock it off already, all right?...

Francis Ford Coppola’s sci-fi epic “Megalopolis,” the director’s self-funded passion project, is tracking to a disappointing $5 million to $7 million box office debut.
The film, released by Lionsgate, is expected to play at 1,700 North American theaters in its opening weekend. A single-digit start would be underwhelming for a movie that cost above $100 million to produce.
Coppola has a lot riding on “Megalopolis” because the 85-year-old “Godfather” and “Apocalypse Now” director ended up independently financing the film for $120 million. After its Cannes Film Festival premiere, Lionsgate agreed to release and market the movie in exchange for a distribution fee.
“Megalopolis” is set in a futuristic America and follows an architect (Adam Driver) who clashes with the corrupt mayor (Giancarlo Esposito) in determining how to rebuild the metropolis of New Rome after a disaster. Reviews have been wildly divisive (it holds a 50% on Rotten Tomatoes), which could stoke interest in the film.

As Saturday Night Live readies its 50th season, which launches Sept. 28, 60 Minutes is releasing never-heard-before audio from a 20-year-old interview with its famously private maestro Lorne Michaels and his talent from the period.
Running as part of the news magazine’s newly launched podcast series, 60 Minutes: A Second Look, the episode weaves together interviews that Lesley Stahl conducted in 2004, when the show was granted full access to a week at SNL — one that happened to coincide with the Ashlee Simpson lip-syncing fiasco — but only aired some three minutes of the interviews. Left on the cutting room floor was material from Michaels, who recently spoke to THR at length for a cover story, as well as former SNL writer Conan O’Brien and then cast members likes Seth Meyers, Amy Poehler, Tina Fey and Darrell Hammond.

Chevy Chase and Donald Glover don’t exactly get along when the cameras aren’t rolling. That’s thanks to Chase remarks like “People think you’re funnier because you’re Black” in between takes on Community. Show creator Dan Harmon regularly apologized for Chase’s behavior after the fact, but Glover took it all in stride.
“I know there’s a human in there somewhere,” he once told The New Yorker about Chase. “He’s almost too human.”
The acrimony between Chase and Glover might be the reason that one of the show’s original ideas went out the window. “Before we started shooting, the writers made a decision that Troy and Pierce would be the Beavis and Butt-Head of the ensemble, always getting up to no good and egging each other on,” Harmon told The Independent. “It seemed like a natural fit.”
But it wasn’t, of course.

While we can’t easily ask the cast of the original Saturday Night Live about the show’s all-time greatest sketches, People did the next best thing, getting the skinny from the cast of the new movie, Saturday Night. With 50 years of comedy to choose from, the actors playing the Not Ready for Primetime Players didn’t choose a single sketch from the early days, instead opting for these more contemporary bits…
Gabriel Labelle (Lorne Michaels)
Labelle went Season 44 for his favorite sketch of all time. “I really love (when) Adam Driver comes in for career day, and he’s this really old man, this oil man, and Pete Davidson is his son, and it’s just hysterical.”
Dylan O’Brien (Dan Aykroyd)
O’Brien agreed that Driver is an all-time great, but his pick for best-ever went to Ryan Gosling’s “Santa Baby” sketch with Vanessa Bayer. “They basically get kinky for Santa.

A film about the creation of Saturday Night Live seems incredibly indulgent on paper. Still, in the hands of a filmmaker like Jason Reitman, whose father had such a connection to people from SNL, we could rely on it at least being sincere. While Saturday Night is certainly an exercise in style over substance, it is well-made and well-performed enough to win viewers over.

If you’re Jimmy Fallon or Horatio Sanz, Saturday Night Live screwups are a dime a dozen. But forget not being able to keep a straight face. When you’re doing live television, other things can — and do — go wrong, from uncontrollable animals to high-flying theatrics gone haywire.
Here are five times that SNL sketches went sideways — and there wasn’t a damn thing anyone could do about it…
1 Massive Head Wound Harry Play
When W.C. Fields said, “Never work with children or animals,” he was somehow predicting Massive Head Wound Harry, a sketch in which a dog decides to take comedy into its own paws.
The plan was always for the pooch to lick Harry’s unfortunate wound, but it wasn’t supposed to devour Dana Carvey’s head. The dog was so ravenous for the fake injury that Carvey got into a tug-of-war to keep it attached to his noggin.

We may never fully understand exactly how Lorne Michaels’ mind works. Although we do know that the Saturday Night Live producer likes white wine, hanging out with Paul Simon and movie posters featuring puffy white clouds in bright blue skies.
Well, now we have a little more info about Michaels’ thought process, specifically in terms of how he spots potential breakout stars on SNL, separating the Adam Sandlers of the world from, well, those cast members whose names we can’t remember.
This tidbit comes from Colin Jost, who, along with Michael Che, guested on Dana Carvey and David Spade’s Fly on the Wall podcast this week. TIFF isn’t a festival known for its standing ovations, but it’s arguable that tonight’s Canadian premiere of Sony’s behind-the-scenes SNL movie Saturday Night came close with arguably the most rapturous response here at the 49th edition, which included the audience clapping rhythmically through the end-credits.
Said one industry insider not connected to the pic, “I won’t be surprised if it wins the Audience Award” –a historical bellwether for Oscar winners.
A multitude of the cast from the Jason Reitman-directed pic were in tow at the Royal Alexandra Theatre including Nicholas Braun (who plays Andy Kaufman and Jim Henson), J.K. Lamorne Morris went against the better wishes of “Saturday Night” director Jason Reitman when meeting with original “Saturday Night Live” cast member Garrett Morris, whom he plays in the upcoming movie about the origins of the famed sketch comedy show.
You see, Reitman wasn’t keen on the film’s sprawling ensemble — Gabriel Labelle plays Lorne Michaels, Rachel Sennott plays writer Rosie Shuster, Cory Michael Smith plays Chevy Chase, Ella Hunt plays Gilda Radner and Dylan O’Brien plays Dan Aykroyd — interacting with their on-screen counterparts prior to production. “Saturday Night,” which premieres on Tuesday at the Toronto Film Festival, takes place entirely on the night of the first “SNL” episode.
“Garrett was going through similar things that I find myself going through in my career, so it was easy to relate to that ‘fish out of water’ feeling,” he said. “So, I wanted to make sure that that’s actually what Garrett was feeling.

A festival like Toronto is the place to take the pulse of the state of film, where artists of the filmed medium put their hearts on display, share what’s on their minds. From what I can tell their minds are in turmoil and their hearts are breaking.
As for women, whose voices and performances are sometimes second thoughts, they are angry and unafraid to show it, whether in Marielle Heller’s “Nightbitch” starring a feral Amy Adams battling her own resentment over caring for her adorable toddler; to “The Assessment” starring Elizabeth Olson and Alicia Vikander by director Fleur Fortune, whose bleak view of maternity in an authoritarian future reflects fears over continuity of the human race.

But first, the joy.

Jason Reitman has described Saturday Night as a “comedy thriller” and said that the villain of the movie is time itself. It’s easy to see what he means in the new trailer for the film that depicts the chaotic premiere night of the comedy institution Saturday Night Live. The trailer, newly released by Sony, showcases more of the incredible recreations at Studio 8H, housed at the famous 30 Rockefeller Plaza, along with the cast of the film emulating that ragtag group of soon-to-be over-the-night comedy sensations.
In the new Saturday Night trailer, Labelle’s Lorne Michaels scrambles to get his show on the road in the face of impending failure. Between battling Rockafella Center security, being at odds with Mbc programming higher-up David Tebet (Willem Dafoe), and trying to keep his cast from killing each other, Michaels faces an uphill battle of wills to launch what eventually becomes an institution among television programming.

It also has two more opportunities at next week’s Primetime event (Bowen Yang for supporting actor and Variety Scripted Series). The next closest show in second place is “Game of Thrones” with 59 overall.

Sony is ramping up its award campaign plans for filmmaker Jason Reitman’s Saturday Night Live movie, a dramatic recreation of the 90 minutes leading up to the iconic NBC show’s first episode in the mid-1970s.
The studio announced late Thursday that it will release Saturday Night in select theaters on Sept. 27 in New York, Los Angeles and Toronto, followed by another expansion on Oct. 4. It will then open nationwide on Oct. 22 as originally planned.
The move gives Sony and the filmmakers a chance to use word of mouth to build anticipation for the movie, which was one of the most buzzed-about titles at the Telluride Film Festival, which is considered ground zero for assessing the awards landscape.
It’s stuff of legend how showrunner Lorne Michael and an insanely talented troupe of young comedians and writers changed television — and culture — forever. Reitman directed from a script he co-wrote with Gil Kenan.

How does one become one of the most celebrated and commercially successful comedy multi-hyphenates of all time? Surely not by dropping out of college before receiving their bachelor’s degree and joining an improv comedy group, right?
Wrong. Thus was the journey for Adam McKay, the immensely talented and successful director, writer, and producer behind such classics as ‘Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy,’ ‘Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby,’ ‘Step Brothers,’ ‘The Other Guys,’ ‘The Big Short,’ and ‘Vice.’ McKay has had a fascinating and very versatile career, going from directing Will Ferrell at his absolute best, making people’s stomachs hurt from laughing too hard, to tackling academy-award nominated films revolving around climate change, corrupt politicians, and the recession of 2008.
