Upon conversing with his former business partner Kenny (Ke Huy Quan) in the season's first two episodes, the North Carolina-based businessman finds out that the myriad of professional crimes he's committed — which include money laundering and bribery — have come to light and that, back home, the FBI is gleefully raiding his office and seizing his assets. So, what does any of this have to do with Duke University, and why is the school so mad about "The White Lotus" right now?

This post contains spoilers for "The White Lotus."
HBO's Emmy Award-winning series "The White Lotus" is back in the pop culture zeitgeist. The acclaimed, so-called anthology series written and directed by Mike White serves as one of the most entertaining and insightful social satires in modern media, tackling power dynamics and class inequality amidst the backdrops of the luxurious vacation destinations the wealthy seek to enjoy in contrast to the working class employees' experiences at the titular hotel chain.
Originally greenlit by HBO as a six-episode miniseries, the success of the Hawaii-set first season led to "The White Lotus" being repurposed into an ongoing anthology series, with season 2 being set in Sicily, Italy. For series creator Mike White, the bigger, bolder, and stranger season 2 was not just a change of luxurious scenery but also an opportunity to explore the sexual power dynamics of its new ensemble, with Tanya McQuoid-Hunt (Jennifer Coolidge...

Netflix’s latest blockbuster, The Electric State, was meant to be a triumph after spending a staggering $320 Million budget and setting the record as the streamers most expensive project ever.
Besides, the film also boasted an ensemble cast of Hollywood heavyweights, such as Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt, backed by Woody Harrelson, Ke Huy Quan, Stanley Tucci, Anthony Mackie, and Giancarlo Esposito. And with the Russo brothers, the minds behind the last two Avengers films, at the helm, what could possibly go wrong?

Since 2012, with its first theatrical release, A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III, A24 has been hooking audiences with a distinct style emphasizing unbridled creativity. Many A24 films earn an R-rating, allowing filmmakers to push the boundaries with taboo subjects, steering away from the fear of studio interference if a film isn't seen as particularly palatable for general audiences.
With so many R-rated films, it's hard to narrow down the best of the best, as each A24 film is unique in presentation and structure, even if it's from the same director. From bone-chilling horror movies to gripping dramas, these R-rated A24 flicks exhibit true artistry and an extensive knowledge of the craft of filmmaking that's difficult to achieve.
X is the Beginning of a Thrilling Series A Film Shoot Goes Horrifically Awry
From writer/director Ti West, X serves as the primary film in perhaps A24's most popular series.

Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan addresses being mistaken for Jackie Chan. The Vietnam-born talent started his career as a child actor in the 1980s, getting his debut role as Short Round in 1984's Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. From there, Quan also had a prominent role playing Data in The Goonies before stepping out of the public eye for several years. His big comeback role was in Everything Everywhere All At Once, which won Best Picture and earned Quan a win for Best Supporting Actor.
In an interview with Wired, Quan discussed being mistaken for Chan. The question came about in a Wired "Autocomplete Interview," where he was in the hot seat to address commonly Googled questions about himself. One of the commonly Googled phrases said "Ke Huy Quan and Jackie Chan." Laughing, the actor explained how he is constantly mistaken for Chan. In a gracious response, Quan...

As one of the most expensive movies ever made, you'd think that Netflix's The Electric State would be a smash hit on the streaming service, despite what critics have to say about it. After all, most movie watchers like to see for themselves if a film is good or bad, right? Well, it appears as if all those negative reviews have had a big impact on The Russo Brothers' latest sci-fi adventure, because despite being #1 on Netflix, viewing numbers prove that The Electric State is not the success the streaming service hoped it would be.
Per Deadline, The Electric State managed to rake in just 25.2 million views its opening weekend, and while yes, it did take top spot for the week of March 10–16, it only did so by a small margin of 900,000. Adolescence, the four-episode limited British crime series from Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham with no star power whatsoever,...

Not every film with good reviews becomes a major commercial hit, and not all films with bad reviews are unpopular. Just like last year there have been a series of examples, including Furiosa: A Mad Max Story, The Fall Guy, and Red One.
Now, Netflix's latest film The Electric State is experiencing a similar trend. Although the film didn't receive a theatrical release and it headed straight to Netflix, the early reviews ahead of the Mar. 14 release called it "one of the worst movies of the year." The official numbers prove otherwise, as Tudumcrowns The Electric State the biggest film of the week.
For the week between Mar. 10 and 16,The Electric State amassed 25.2 million views and 53.8 million hours viewed. That is a huge feat considering the movie had only 2 full days to achieve that before Netflix stopped counting.
It became the No. 1 movie in 47 countries, including the U.S.

Anthony and Joe Russo, the Russo Brothers, have directed some of the biggest movies of all time, with their film Avengers: Endgame coming in second place just behind James Cameron’s Avatar – and on March 14th, the Netflix streaming service released their latest film, the robot adventure The Electric State. The film topped the English films chart on Netflix over its debut weekend – but managed to do so with a surprisingly low number of views. The Electric State reached #1 with 25.2 million views, which pales in comparison to the debut numbers of recent hits like Back in Action (46.8 million views) and Carry On (42 million views), but is slightly higher than last year’s release of Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver. Still, this is the third Millie Bobby Brown-led film to debut at #1 for Netflix, following last year’s Damsel (which got started with 35.3 million views) and 2022’s Enola Holmes 2,...

The Electric State co-director Joe Russo has discussed the movie's tonal shift from the novel, and how the author felt about it. Adapted from Simon Stålenhag's 2018 illustrated novel of the same name, the film follows an orphaned teen in an alternative 1990s, who teams up with a smuggler and a robot to search for her missing brother. The Electric State's strong cast is headed up by Chris Pratt and Millie Bobby Brown, Ke Huy Quan, and Woody Harrelson, and the movie takes a more light-hearted approach than the novel on which it is based.
In an interview with ScreenRant, Russo, who co-directed the movie with his brother Anthony, explains the film's tonal shift, and what Stålenhag thought about it. He reveals that, though the source material was darker in tone, the story's message about technology was key for a younger audience, so the decision was made to go for a more family-friendly movie.

Critics Hated The Russo Brothers' The Electric State, But the Audience Score Tells a Different Story

Netflix's latest release, The Electric State, has all the qualities of a major blockbuster. It comes from a big studio, it has a stellar cast and critically acclaimed directors, and, despite the studio's reluctance for theatrical releases, it has a major budget.
However, The Electric State debuted with one of the worst ratings of the year. The sci-fi film debuted with an abysmal score of 10% on Rotten Tomatoes, a number that slightly increased to 14%, still a major disappointment. Following its official release on the platform, the audience score couldn't be more different, as it's over five times better than the critics' score.
While most of the critics called The Electric State a bad movie, the audience fully disagreed. Following its Mar. 14 release on Netflix, The Electric State has an audience approval score of 76%. While the score is not exactly a reason to start celebrating and greenlighting a sequel just yet,...

The Russo brothers’ The Electric State may have only just landed on Netflix, but Joe Russo has already addressed the possibility of a sequel. Based on the illustrated novel by Swedish artist Simon Stålenhag, the Russo’s latest big-budget outing unites Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown with Guardians of the Galaxy’s Chris Pratt in an effects-laden sci-fi adventure set in an alternate 1990s. Released on Netflix on March 14, The Electric State’s supporting cast also boasts a notable list of talent, including Stanley Tucci, Giancarlo Esposito, Ke Huy Quan, Woody Harrelson, and Anthony Mackie.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Joe Russo admitted that while he and his brother have no plans to develop a sequel to The Electric State, they do intend to expand the property in other ways. In addition to a tie-in mobile game, dubbed The Electric State: Kid Cosmo, the director revealed that they are also discussing a possible television show.

Three years after their last feature film, “The Gray Man,” premiered on Netflix and one year before they make their return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, directors Anthony and Joe Russo are back. Their latest offering, “The Electric State,” is a sci-fi blockbuster with a hefty price tag. The film, which continues the Russos’ ongoing creative partnership with Netflix, has a reported budget of $320 million — making it one of the most expensive movies ever made.
Only films based on pre-existing pieces of intellectual property typically get that kind of financial support in Hollywood these days. Is “The Electric State” based on a book, though? Here is what you should know about the new, expensive Netflix film’s origins.
Is “The Electric State” based on a book?
Yes! “The Electric State” is not, however, based on a traditional book. It is, instead, loosely based on a 2018 illustrated novel by acclaimed Swedish artist Simon Stålenhag.

At the iconic destination resort for the upper class, Murray Bartlett’s addiction relapse and Jennifer Coolidge’s desperation to find love doom them both in Season 1 of The White Lotus. Their characters are complete messes, and their imperfections make for damn good TV. However, these are far from the only performances in the show that are worthy of mentioning. Creator Mike White brings disorder to each season that is as uncomfortable as it is hilarious to watch unfold, unleashed by the exceptional acting talent. There are Oscar-winners on and off the screen throughout the series, from Laura Dern and Ke Huy Quan letting loose f-bombs over the phone, to F. Murray Abraham playing a horny grandpa whose sexism infects his son and grandson.

In Hollywood, actors can be upset over missed opportunities, but sometimes, they can be blessings in disguise. For example, stepping away from The Electric State might be one of the smartest moves that Michelle Yeoh has made in her career.

Let’s face it, the Russo brothers’ post-mcu career as co-directors in Cherry and The Gray Man lacked the same widespread praise seen in their winning trio of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Before the two returns to MCU for Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, they are now headlining a brand-new Netflix movie The Electric State, the streaming giant’s most expensive feature ever produced at reportedly $320 million.
At the time of writing, that would be the 13th most expensive movie, trailing just five million less than Avengers: Infinity War. A budget this big, coupled with the dystopian sci-fi angle adapted from Simon Stålenhag’s acclaimed 2018 illustrated novel of the same name that looks right from the Russo brothers’ wheelhouse and not to forget, a recognizable cast both on-screen and voice-only acting, it’s natural to have a high expectation here. In the U.S. of A., a cool $300M can not only buy you the presidency, but give you untold access to every federal agency, government servers, and private records. Another $300M (plus) can buy you the rights to The Electric State, Simon Stålenhag’s popular, 2018 illustrated novel; mid-level, name-brand stars; not one, but two Oscar winners; and a dual Tony and Emmy award winner (Jason Alexander). It can also buy you top-shelf visual effects, production/art design, and behind-the-camera talent. Apparently, though, what $300M can’t buy you includes a serviceable screenplay, multi-dimensional characters, or even barely functional, expositional dialogue. Set in an alternate timeline where service robots gained sentience, rebelled, and...

There’s art, there’s entertainment — and then there’s “content,” the catch-all term that refers to the endless supply of stuff that is pumped out in the name of numbers and inventory. Art enlightens. Entertainment provides escapism. Content is simply there, clogging up the arteries of streaming services and clickbait sites, offering up buffets of empty calories and almost instant amnesia. It’s not interested in exploring the human experience, passing on public-service information, delighting, distracting, making you laugh, cry, or pump your fist in the air. The Russo brothers hate cinema. This much they’ve made abundantly clear time and time again, from prodding at a one-sided beef with Martin Scorsese (“This is my dog; his name is Box Office”) to expectedly being among the first blockbuster filmmakers to sell out to AI (“I want a movie starring my photoreal avatar and Marilyn Monroe’s photoreal avatar”), but don’t be misled; Anthony and Joe Russo hate everything cinema represents. They hate theatrical exhibition, they hate critical assessment defined outside the realm of hard numbers, but most of all, dear reader, they hate you.
Unfortunately, because this is in fact the Russos we’re talking about, the sort of venomous hatred being discussed here isn’t of the variety that gets spun into artistic gold. Some artists can channel their unbridled vitriol into summer anthems systematically annihilating Drake’s credibility, but other “artists” do for sheer...

On March 7, 2025, Hollywood was once again greeted with another eye-watering expensive flop. And this time, it’s The Electric State—a $320M Netflix sci-fi epic starring Chris Pratt and Millie Bobby Brown. But calling it “epic” feels generous especially when critics obliterated it with a brutal 20% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The 2018 illustrated novel that Anthony and Joe Russo’s The Electric State is based on is an elegiac tone poem about an America left derelict by its stewards. The nation that Simon Stålenhag envisioned is a 3,500-mile drug den, where people are in nonstop, VR-mainlined communion with the enormous, happy corporate mascots that humanity created. Constant stimulation and flashing lights in your VR helmet is what amounts to self-care here.
To the extent that the Russos’ mega-budget Netflix adaptation plays out like it wants its audience to feel as if they’re at the mercy of capitalism, The Electric State could be read as a subversive, metatextual success. But it’s obvious that the film is meant to be taken at face value. There’s nothing behind its contemptible eyes, no spine to house the fading diode that once contained a soul. This is “content” at its most nakedly bankrupt.

The Russo Brothers will return to Marvel in 2026 and 2027 with Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars, but before doing so, they’re teaming up with a star-studded ensemble for The Electric State, the sci-fi comedy coming to Netflix this Friday. After debuting with a 21% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes — the worst ever for a Russo Brothers film — the budget for the movie has finally been revealed. The Electric State cost $320 million to produce, which gives it a higher production cost than the combined total of the last 10 Best Picture winners at the Academy Awards. Chris Pratt, Millie Bobby Brown, Woody Harrelson, Ke Huy Quan, Alan Tudyk, Stanley Tucci, Giancarlo Esposito, Colman Domingo, Anthony Mackie, and Brian Cox all have roles in the film.

The Electric State is the latest endeavor by directing duo Joe and Anthony Russo to move beyond their Marvel tenure and truly establish themselves with a wholly original project. Well technically, it’s based on a graphic novel, but still. While their other recent directorial efforts, such as The Gray Man, failed to make a positive impression, Electric State felt like it could be something special given its ambitious premise, all-star cast, and the $320 million they were given to bring the film to life.
Sadly, that is not the case. While The Electric State isn’t a terrible movie and it definitely has its moments throughout, I can’t in good conscience say that it’s a good movie either. An ambitious but ultimately disappointing mess that frequently confuses muddled storytelling and contradictory ideas with nuance and depth constantly on the verge of becoming better but never quite getting there.

The Russo brothers, Anthony and Joe, know how to make some fun pieces of film. Anthony has directed a bunch of good Marvel-related films, including the fantastic Avengers: Endgame. Joe has also directed, but has produced a number of winners. Will their latest, The Electric State, which premieres on Netflix on March 14, also be good?
